Meanwhile, bottom tier Game and Watch can OHKO himself and annihilate everything in his path while doing so... Bro, this is Melee. Every charcater can break the game
As someone who knows absolutely nothing about how Melee is programmed, if I had to guess how this works: Mario’s cape reflects projectiles and turns opponents around. So when an opponent tries to perform an attack from the ledge and Mario capes them, the game tries to turn them around. But it can’t, because you can only be facing one direction while you’re on a ledge. So the game compensates by teleporting them to the next ledge behind Mario. The reason this results in an insta kill on Yoshi’s Island is because the next ledge behind Mario is inside the blast zone. Again, this is all coming from someone who has no idea how Melee works. This is pure speculation.
Seems like a reasonable assumption. Maybe the game stores which platform you're hanging from, but uses your facing direction to determine which side of it you're on.
I believe i understand why it does this. So we all know marios cape turns enemies around, so when doing a ledge attack your character is still considered on the ledge, so when it turns you around it tries to put you on a ledge facing the opposite direction. Thats why you die on Yoshis story too, theres technically a ledge off the side of the map there, that just so happens to also be within the blastzone.
I'm curious how this Mario Cape trick would work on a stage like Brinstar Depths, where the ledges are on a giant sorta blob-shaped platform rather than the flatter angular shape of FD or Yoshi's Island
As someone who has mained Mario in every title, and has kept Mario in his top 3 used characters consistently since melee, this makes me very happy. Partially because it’s a new thing to learn, as I honestly don’t have pro levels of hours in the various titles or anything. Partially because melee is a masterpiece of jank in many respects, and, well, this short is just very well edited and just a cut above in general.
I would guess that every ledge is set to have the character holding it face a certain direction. If the character on that ledge is made to turn around then as some sort of fail safe the game sets the character to a ledge with that new direction.
I don’t even get how it like, only Insta kills on Yoshi’s island, and not also work on Mushroom Kingdom 1 or 2’s walkoffs. Must be because of off screen ledges? What a game man
I love how that first trick is extremely easy to pull off in tournament. Works on all tournament legal stages against basically all the best characters in the game
