Aklo using his unique secondary is sick and I'm glad he did it. It's also completely on brand for the 'exciting' twist of his melee moment to be wiggling out
what i find best is to di, release the stick in air, and time any of the three options, wiggle, flick, rapid taps, at the correct time. you dont actually need to hold the di agle the entire flight
I intuitively knew there were things you could/couldn’t do when in tumble but never specifically knew what they were. Thank you for clarifying after all these years lmao
Most of us are just playing this game off feels at this point lol, I do some crazy edge cancels randomly and yea I meant it but it’s not like I know how I did them cuz they’re all in the moment things lmao.
Another hidden input: right after the hookshot is released, while it's still in flight, Aklo inputs a drift away to dodge Marth bair. Go frame by frame from 2:32 to see
I think this is the most important "tech" in the entire sequence. Wiggle out is super easy. Memorizing tether heights is easy. But intentionally recovering low, tethering, and cognizantly drifting away during the tether to dodge the bair? That's insane. Also his tech was great and even better was the bair after. But not as insane as the drift away.
I came here looking for this. He moves closer with the air dodge and then immediately dodges the bair with the drift back. It’s crazy. Beautiful. So tricksy.
@@skyninegamingThe bair is necessary to get on stage quick otherwise you just jump out similar to Marths needing to bair but the whole sequence is perfect yeah. The decision to do that insanely difficult recovery knowing Zain was going to try to punish the recovery he had just seen is conditioning that would make hugs proud.
@@LANBobYonson@yomedrath is right. While Young Link and Link have the same issue as Marth regarding walljump techs (they jump out super far), Aklo saved his double jump to cancel the momentum following the walljump tech. The bair was important to catch Marth falling to ledge after his up-B, but in this particular sequence, Aklo doesn't capitalize further. In other games, I believe he has reverse edge guarded with tech double jump bair.
Few things, Link's tether is subjected to random chance; he does not always sweetspot it. There is a radius of 5.4 melee-meters around the tip of his hook, and when every single chain in the tether is within this radius, the game despawns the hookshot and checks to see if Link is within grabbing range of the ledge, if so he sweetspots it. The variance of this check leads to inconsistent sweetspots, and his ledge detection code also uses the previous frame's position for checking whether or not to sweetspot which compounds onto this inconsistency.
@ No, it’s more like the reel in animation has so much variance that his position can often times be too far from the ledge in one direction or another once all the chains in his hookshot are within the hook radius check.
The production value of these videos is ever-amazing. Showing examples of successes and failures for each technique - highlighting hitboxes showcased on a totally clean stage - slowing down time to show button inputs - and somehow getting dynamic replay cam on the event itself. I wouldn't even know how you accomplished most of this stuff - it just works.
I guess we won't talk about the slight drift to the right Aklo input after his tether to space outside of Zain's back air, or the timing on his own back air to make sure he got a reverse hit and sent Zain back offstage. What a beautiful interaction.
I dont play melee, I barely follow the competitive scene anymore and yet I still love all those videos and the way you explain every little thing that make the play insane
Your videos have such a high quality, informative, very well illustrated with good rythm and showcase awesome moments! Thank you so much for your work!
Super cool video! Great explanation and pacing, very helpful visuals, and (most importantly) you didn't waste 30 minutes of my time with additional fluff to pad out the video! This is the kind of stuff I love to see in my recommended. Great job!
Incredibly good job explaining, melee is so complicated that a lot of time there are too many terms thrown around at once and it's hard to follow for people who haven't played it. The combination of visual and audial cues, synchronized up like you did, makes it so much easier.
subbing because that production quality is unreal. its not just the breakdown but the presentation of it. phenomenal work, makes me want to start smash again.
This is so well explained ! And the visual representations really help for someone like me who know Smash but not to this degree of knowledge. Thank you very much ! 🔥🔥
never knew about wiggling out of tumble looks like he directionally air dodges back, but man that wall jump for invincibility to avoid an attack as well is insane! great job explaining and showing it all
I got this game in 2003 if I remember correctly. To this DAY...I still can't believe we've broken it down THIS much. The graphics in here are phenomenal. And I hope Aklo takes his first major W soon too. Same for Junebug and his DK.
I fell off of Smash a long time ago, but I knew this kind of thing would happen eventually, man. I knew the low tiers would start coming back and being explored. Too many older players and smash gods focusing on what's meta and saying x character sucks and isn't worth playing, yet here we are. I think AMSA really set the ball in motion with his legendary and unheard of Yoshi run, and then recently there's been a huge resurgence of Donkey Kong players too. Now we got a Link taking games off of Zain, one of the best players to ever pick up the controller. Crazy set.
Fun fact, Samus actually has another way to avoid the tether hop: walljump. It's super useful especially since it provides invincibility and you can act out of it very quickly.
Finally someone wins with a player that's not Marth or fox, this dude just prooved and outplayed the Marth, Fox and Captain Falcon slackers :) I'm happy now :)
1:26 Is why I love Link so much. Link was so much fun to play and high level link is just so cool to see! Look at how barely the tip of that blade comes to Link's face!
Aklo also faded back as he shot the hookshot into the stage to avoid being hit. He covered every single option from zain that led to zain being able to safely recover. Dude was thinking at the quantum computing level.
@@Kosmicd12 It would be airdodge forward > zair > inmediately press backwards to fade back. It isn't that complex of an input but to have the presence of mind to read the offstage coverage and make that decision is insane haha
I fucking love tether recoveries, it's part of what I love about samus. The amount of mixup/route potential you get out of airdodge -> grapple alone both positionally and timing-wise is way more immense than people think. So many little ways to recover with grapple correctly. Also, this isn't a correction because it was true for aklo's case here, but I think ppl will find it neat maybe. For samus and YL, there is a third way to avoid the pesky grapple pop-up. If you set it up right (usually by dangling a lil bit before reeling in) you can do a walljump. Samus particularly likes this into immediate up b cause you end up getting a lot of invincibility out of it. Anyways thankyou for subscribing to samus facts ... editing to say I forgot to say this video fkin rocks
The wild part is i did this without even knowing it was a thing. As a kid i was impatient so when falling i would move the joystick rapidly cause intuitively i wanted to speed up and get back to throwing hands.
Fantastic video! To be honest, I'm surprised you didn't also put focus on the burst of drift that Link himself gets out of starting his zair, because Aklo cleanly drifting backwards with it was essential in getting him away from the hit that was coming at him.
i had actually no idea about the wiggle thing there have been so many situations where it wouldve been nice to know that instead of turning up an idea to settle for a less optimal solution because it wouldnt work in tumble
1:42 addition: peach is unable to float out of tumble If you attempt to input float, you will double jump for a frame and then float after, losing a crucial resource
I feel like wiggle out is pretty underrated at the lower ELO I play at. Having sooner actionable ability out of tumble is just such a huge advantage that not many people seem to realize is a thing.
You missed one other trick he did. Aklo air dodges in, tethers, then drifts back immediately to dodge the bair while the tether came out. Another subtle decision that saved his life.
The best part of this is how if you blink you miss 1000gigatons of raw brain power and skill. And if you don't know what is going on, you'll never know why it's so special.
Really nice highlight on this situation. Wouldve loved if you also pointed out Aklo's amazing drift out of harms way right after shooting the hookshot out of the airdodge.
Me learning more about Link from this video✍📝

i really like the microspace he did right as he started the tether. If he hadn't done that, Zain's BAir would've still covered the low hook shot

The entire sequence off ledge is pure magic.
