I enjoyed this. I finally got to see Adrian Vandenberg perform when he was touring with Whitesnake. I really wish the band Vandenberg had stayed together and made it big. Adrian is that talented!
Pete, Thank you for ranking these albums. I feel vandenberg is really underrated (not only because I am from the netherlands). My dad got me into them and I have loved them ever since. Great to hear you're and martins opinions on their albums. Keep on doing these type of videos
Now you really got me curious about checking out the older trilogy ... so far I've only heard 2020 and really like it. Thanks for getting me revved up Pete and Martin!
Thanks for this. It's nice to listen to. Great to hear what Vandenberg's impact was in those days. And that after all these years, it still stands. Although I remember I went to the gigs I was maybe too young to realize it all. Very proud of what the band had achieved.
He really SHOULD have been! I miss and LOVE the Style/Feel of Guitarists like Randy Rhoads, Michael Schenker, Adrian Vandenburg, etc who play with Minor-Key, Classical influences with a lot of emotion and melody in their playing. I have to be fair and mention a more current Guitarist, John Norum who has a very similar feel.
Loved this episode, Vandenberg was in my top three bands circa 1982-85! I actually met Adrian Vandenberg on the Whitesnake '87 Tour. I worked at a record store then and was given a backstage pass from my manager who knew I was a huge Vandenberg fan. Pete, you're gonna hate me for this, but....I was within a yard or so of all the other Whitesnake guys (including Coverdale) and didn't even try to talk to them because I was so thrilled to get to "hang out" with Adrian Vandenberg! He was a nice guy and very tall! I asked him if he was influenced by Schenker and he said, "no," but had "similar influences." Anyway...here are my picks in order: 1. Debut - I thought then that these guys had such a unique sound; especially Adrian's tone and muting technique. I remember that the "Burning Heart" solo was the first I ever learned to play note-for-note and is still one of my all time favorite guitar solos. 2. Heading for a Storm - I personally liked the clean production and found the songs all to be strong; The solo in "Different Worlds" has that mellow section that always reminded me of "Try Me" by Schenker (UFO). My only beef with this album was that Adrian painted the shark's tails incorrectly on the album cover...they look like a mixture between a shark and a dolphin! 3. Alibi - best album cover for sure; "Voodoo" and "Dressed to Kill" are insanely awesome but to me, there are a number of fillers on this one and I don't like Adrian's tone quite as much (though its still good) 4. 2020 - I don't yet own this but I've listened to it extensively and think its enjoyable. It's just not the "classic" Vandenberg stylistically; a bit more like "Moonkings" meets "Whitesnake." I could never understand why "Vandenberg" weren't huge...after their one minor hit, the label just didn't seem to promote them. Kind of reminds me of what happened with Golden Earring; one or two "hits" but then they could never quite catch on outside of Holland for some reason.
Great video! For some reason I never listened to this band. I am a huge Whitesnake fan and loved seeing Adrian on the Slip Of The Tongue tour but missed out. Your reviews have convinced me to check out the catalog. Thanks guys!
Thanks, Martin and Pete, for another engaging show. I always enjoy the discussions that develop between you two when you differ so widely on ranking a particular album or just provide additional and interesting narrative,
Thanks fellas for this video! I’ve never heard any of the Vandenberg albums until I watched this video last week, thank you! I’ve now been listening to the ‘Heading For A Storm’ album non stop the past 3-4 days hahah. I really like that album 👌🏽 it’s definitely a melodic album but I wouldn’t say it’s too poppy, it’s still a pretty hard rockin’ album in my opinion
1. Heading for a Storm 2. Vandenberg (debut) 3. Alibi 4. Vandenberg 2020 (I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.) I agree with Martin about the importance of the lead vocalist. Bert Heerink was the perfect singer for this band.
Martin ,the old Vandenberg song that has shit in the lyrics is Wait off the debut"Till the shit hits the fan"and the other one off H.F.A.S. This is War"Aint gonna take all this shit anymore"
I love listening to you 2 together, it's like taking a college course on the band. I'm not a guitar player or do I know much about it technically, I just know what sounds good to my ears and I have long said that the guitar tone that Adrian has on that first album is just perfect.
Love these vids. You two do a great job👍😀(Also..still discovering great albums from Martins excellent CollectorsGuide series. Its the gift that keeps on giving🤘😎)
I bought the debut back in 82. There was some buzz about this band in Sweden in the time for the release. But I never realy got in to the album. I will give it a new try.
1- Debut: Solid Melodic Hard Rock. You can see how early 80s Melodic Metal is evolving into Melodic Hard Rock style of the 80s. Back On My Feet is a great tune. 2- Heading For A Storm - This is pure 80s Melodic Hard Rock. You can hear that it had influenced early White Lion. This Is War and Heading For A Storm are kickass songs. 3- Vandenberg 2020- Their brand new album is a fine return to form. This is Classic Hard Rock with a modern production. 4- Alibi - Basicly the same Melodic Hard Rock style with an 80s Pyromania-style production. I am pretty sure that drums are programmed. Anyway Fighting Against The World is a killer song🔥🔥🔥
Hey guys, thank you so much for this. Adrian (Adje) Van den Berg is great and so was & is his band! I love their music. If you like this, please check out AYREON, a band / project by Dutch genius Arjen Lukassen. Hope to see your review on his brilliant work! Thanks M8, keep up the great work. All the best & kind regards from The Netherlands. Cheers, Toon (Thony) V.
About the Bark at The Moon link: Adrian also auditioned for Thin Lizzy in 1982. He spent a week with Phil Lynott and then decided no to accept the offer. John Sykes then got the job. By the way Pete: have you ever checked out Manic Eden? That was a band consisiting of Adrian, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge with singer Ron Young. They made one album. I love that one quite a bit!
Haven't heard the newest, but I like the first three in the order they were released. After this video I'll probably go order the new one, as well. Side note: I just ordered three more of Martin's books from his website. They're a bit over-priced, but they look beautiful and are written so well that it's worth it. I'm trying to complete my Martin bibliography, but have a way to go. I know there's been a Top 10 Malmsteen Songs video on SOT, but I'd love to see Pete and Martin talk about the albums! Thanks, Pete & Papa Popoff!
I was working in a record store here in Worcester, when these guys with strange accents and long hair walk in. Vandenberg, who was opening for Ozzy at the Centrum. Great guys!
VandenBerg rocks !!! I don't know about ranking the albums, but "Wait" is probably my favorite song just because it funny to me and there's some great guitar work going on there .
Man I loved Alibi. That's my #1. 1. Alibi 2. Heading for the Storm 3. Vandenberg 4. 2020 It's a good album, it just doesn't feel like Vandenberg to me.
I would agree with Alibi being on the bottom of the list, that album was such a disappointment when it came out. Still have it in mint condition, because it only got played 3 or 4 times.
As a Dutch guy, I liked this show a lot. Their short catalog gave you guys a lot more time to talk about the band, albums and songs, whereas a band has 15+ albums there isn't enough time to dive that deep into the material!
I remember really enjoying the debut back when it first came out. As a big Michael Schenker fan I always found Adrian to be a second tier Schenker. Still really enjoyable proto hair metal.
You guys are great together/ PETE& MARTIN/. Great 👍 shirt PETE/ since the MSG episode/ I must have played 5 or 6 x. The 1981 MSG/ constant rotation. Missing the new Vandenberg / have the others. Great show
Adrian's guitar playing was stellar one the first three albums. After those, it all went down. Wrist problems. Not able to keep pace with Vivian and especially Vai.
Alibi, Heading for a storm, debut then 2020. I also saw Vandenberg supporting Schenker - excellent package - so well known he wasnt that he used to setup and take down his own effects pedal. Vandeberg produced an excellent live video from Japan back in the day - never seen it on DVD though but at least I've still got a VHS player that I can watch it on.
Excellent band that should’ve been way more popular and successful than they were. Adrian is a phenomenal guitarist, Bert is an outstanding vocalist, and the rhythm section was very very good as well.
First time i saw them: Ulicoten, Holland 1982 together with Accept, Savage, Picture and Bodine (in a tent!!!) Second time in Brussels, Belgium 1983 as support for Rush. Vandenberg Heading for a storm Alibi Last record, not my thing
Pete like you I am enjoying the hell out of the new Kansas & Vandenberg album. Suggestion for top 10 Mastadon & can't wait for Marillion one you said is coming. Peace bro.
There was a good scene back in the day in the Netherlands and Belgium. Picture, Ostrogoth, Vandenberg, Killer, Bodine. The latter had Arjen Lucassen on Lead guitar, the genius behind Ayreon and Star One!
So many Dutch last names start with "Van" which means "being from" or "of the". Berg is Hill or Mountain. So it's Adrian From The Mountain. Eddie and Alex were also born in Holland (Amsterdam) but moved to the USA at a very young age. Halen is a village in Belgium close to the Dutch border. So it's Eddie and Alex from Halen.
Just as an ad on , the first time in 82 was support to msg and the second time supporting the 2nd album , also at de montfort , in 83 was support to kiss , lick it up tour ?? Im sure thats right , sorry getting old lol.
Man, This Is War off the second album is a straight up Yngwie song before Yngwie even put out his first solo album! Really crazy how much it sounds like his stuff.
they're right .Bert Heerink, had the dutch accent, but his vocals and his english were very clear, and very good for sure,..... another dutch vocalist (even though born in India)even more so is Barry Hay from Golden Earring, who has no accent while singing, very clear ,..you'd think he was from North America , like N.Y. or something ,or even England, Barry is a hell of a singer ,...very distinct
Barry had a flawless English pronouciation but then his father was English so that might have got a lot to do with that. Still love the Earring, they still kick ass too!
If you ad the new Vandenberg album you might as well ad the Moonkings albums. Adrian, or Ad/Adje as he is commonly known in the Netherlands, was in dubio because he finally could use the Vandenberg name again after lawsuits from past Vandenberg members. At the same time his Moonkings singer couldn't go on longer tours because of his farm(!) and Adrian wanted to go on longer tours.
What I love about this channel is that I am still hearing about establish act many many years after their heyday. Vandenburg ... never heard of them/him. I then searched the term 'Power Metal' ....oooh ... Not a fan
I'd rank them in order of their release, the debut is the best.2nd is also great.Alibi is pretty forgettable to me...Haven't heard the new one yet though...
Thanks for this great ranking episode of Vandenberg! I am a huge fan of Adrian and follow him from the 80s, when his debut album saw the light. I lived in his hometown that time. Before Adrian started the band he studie Art Academy. Therefor he did all the artwork on all of the albums! In the years he was injured he painted a lot and he was quite a well known artist in the art circuit. You mentioned that Vandenberg did not tour in the USA. The truth is that they didn't tour as headliner. They only did US support acts for i.e. Ozzy Osbourne and Kiss back in the 80s. There Adrian came in contact with Rudy Sarzo, which played with Ozzy at that time. At last: I am quite sure that Adrian Vandenberg did name his band Vandenberg 2020 to make a statement! Adrian was for years in law suits with Bert and Dick. The last two want to claim the band name. What is really ridiculous of course. Bert and Dick lost all the suits. Adrian once told me that he was really frustrated about that. Besides frustrated he was also angry at the guys. Their relation is disturbed for "ever". So in my opinion Adrian wanted to show everyone that there is only one person which has the right to carry that band name. Once again thanks for the video. I will mention Adrian the video.
Hey Aad, your well informed 👍🏼. But Vandenberg did also shows as headliner. 3 Roxy gigs in L.A. with Heaven/Steeler(Yngwie Malmsteen) as support. 3 shows with Quiet Riot and Eric Martin band as support at The Keystone. And ofcourse that show with Metallica as support. But there are more.
@@wasdroger Hi Roger, thnx for the great and informative comment. In Vandenberg terms "I am back on my feet again..."
Aad Bannink hey Aad helemaal oke toch.
While I do think Bert is a good vocalist, I was always a little put off by his accent and lyrics. My friends and I always thought he was the reason that Vandenberg didn't break bigger. The electronic drums didn't help either. We played the hell out of the first album. The second one was a bit of a letdown. By the time Alibi came out, there were so many better, heavier bands that their window had closed. Alibi felt lite compared to the albums of the day.
patriotpizzaman I always wondered the same thing, but then again Scorpions made it big worldwide, and Klaus also has a very heavy accent. Not that I cared, I love the Scorpions of the 70s and 80s.
Why would anyone find a foreign singer's accent "distracting"?! Personally I always like when I her a singer that has a non English inflection to their vocals, adds character. Vandenberg rules!
@@joszoomer6784 Thnx!
My top 4 is 2020 (A Great new sound very now) Alibi (The band finally getting into their own) Vandenberg Heading for a Storm (The albums that is instrumentaly strong but the vocalist Bert annoyes me with his accent) I have a problem with Bert since he started making Dutch versions from various rock classics feels like raping songs. Since then i have trouble listening to his voice. th-cam.com/video/MJACYAQy-eQ/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/L-K4ShiGpZw/w-d-xo.html I loved the Moonkings a sort of precusor to the new Vandenberg. th-cam.com/video/T7o9_mD7a-M/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/6V_-d9fYENk/w-d-xo.html
1.Alibi 2.Heading for a Storm 3.Vandenberg 2020 Vandenberg sounds like good hardrock, but doesen't sound like "Vandenberg" -but it is 35 year since Alibi.
1. Vandenberg 2. Heading for a Storm As far as I ever got...HFAS seemed to be going in a more keyboard-heavy direction. Then the video for "Once in a Lifetime" and the song itself off Alibi confirmed my suspicions. Though the album covers for the 2 & 3 are killer, with HFAS being one of my all-time favorites.
@@robert6907 I just listened to "Friday Night" to make sure I remembered correctly. Keyboards. And, as I attempted to state, I think I've only ever heard the one song off Alibi, which is why I didn't rank it.
While we happen to be in the geographical area...never heard Pete mention Hanoi Rocks (which means he probably doesn't care for them). I think Martin is a pretty big fan.
Thanks a lot for the kind words on me! Most appreciated!
Bert Heerink
Hi Bert!!!!
And hello to you to!
You are one of the great rock singers of the 80's, Bert!
I saw Vandenberg support The Michael Schenker Group at Hammersmith Odeon in 1982. That was a great night :)
I could have died that night and been happy LOL :)
I was lucky enough to see Vandenberg on the first album tour. Used to wear that album out!
I enjoyed this. I finally got to see Adrian Vandenberg perform when he was touring with Whitesnake. I really wish the band Vandenberg had stayed together and made it big. Adrian is that talented!

Very cool never heard of this band, gonna go and check them out. How about a ranking the studio albums Hanoi Rocks?
There was a good scene back in the day in the Netherlands and Belgium. Picture, Ostrogoth, Vandenberg, Killer, Bodine. The latter had Arjen Lucassen on Lead guitar, the genius behind Ayreon and Star One!
Picture and Bodine are fantastic
I saw Vandenberg open for Kiss (with Riot playing first) in ‘84, not sure if they played the states again. Great show, but tough to follow Riot!
So it's Eddie and Alex from Halen.
first record an absolute classic
Just as an ad on , the first time in 82 was support to msg and the second time supporting the 2nd album , also at de montfort , in 83 was support to kiss , lick it up tour ?? Im sure thats right , sorry getting old lol.
Man, This Is War off the second album is a straight up Yngwie song before Yngwie even put out his first solo album! Really crazy how much it sounds like his stuff.
Love Vandenberg. Bought the new one last month. It’s not bad.
I like the coffee holders and the picks that came with it too
they're right .Bert Heerink, had the dutch accent, but his vocals and his english were very clear, and very good for sure,..... another dutch vocalist (even though born in India)even more so is Barry Hay from Golden Earring, who has no accent while singing, very clear ,..you'd think he was from North America , like N.Y. or something ,or even England, Barry is a hell of a singer ,...very distinct
Barry had a flawless English pronouciation but then his father was English so that might have got a lot to do with that. Still love the Earring, they still kick ass too!
@@chrisvanuden love them too
1.) Vandenberg
2.) Heading For A Storm
3.) Alibi
I don’t have the new one.
I think I read that Adje/ Adrian was influenced by Leslie West.
Yes Martin, Sol Studios is Jimmy Page's place. Jimmy and Adrian have been friends for a long time
The beautifull art cover from these albuns were designed by Adrian Vandenberg.
What I love about this channel is that I am still hearing about establish act many many years after their heyday. Vandenburg ... never heard of them/him. I then searched the term 'Power Metal' ....oooh ... Not a fan
Also Ronnie Romero sang with Michael Schenker last year ...another Michael connection
1) Vandenberg
2) Alibi
3) Heading for a Storm
4) 2020
Alibi is my favorite.
In Vandenberg terms "I am back on my feet again..." :-)
Aad Bannink hey Aad helemaal oke toch.
@Aad Bannink heel tof!
@@chrisvanuden We called Bert a poor man's Klaus Meine lol! He was good but, not in Klaus' league ;)
patriotpizzaman haha poor Bert!
Why would anyone find a foreign singer's accent "distracting"?! Personally I always like when I her a singer that has a non English inflection to their vocals, adds character. Vandenberg rules!
Tom Angelripper of Sodom :-)
cool!
PETE is correct. I think VANDENBERG did 5 shows in 🇺🇸 with KISS & 4 shows in 🇺🇸 with OZZY. I could be wrong/ but that was it
Yes, you are right. They only did these support act shows.
Three Months ozzy & Three Months Kiss
@@joszoomer6784 you certainly will know the exact data...you were at all the shows. :-) by the way, leuk dat je reageert!
Atco did the same with Loudness...pushed the first album and slowly lost interest :-(
Nice vid, caused me to go back and listen to their older albums. Pete: You've done best remakes, consider a worst hard rock remakes show.
Not a big Vandenberg fan outside of a handful of songs but the debut would be #1 for me.
My top 4 is
2020 (A Great new sound very now)
Alibi (The band finally getting into their own)
Vandenberg
Heading for a Storm (The albums that is instrumentaly strong but the vocalist Bert annoyes me with his accent)
I have a problem with Bert since he started making Dutch versions from various rock classics feels like raping songs. Since then i have trouble listening to his voice.

I loved the Moonkings a sort of precusor to the new Vandenberg.

1.Alibi
2.Heading for a Storm
3.Vandenberg
2020 Vandenberg sounds like good hardrock, but doesen't sound like "Vandenberg" -but it is
35 year since Alibi.
How about ranking Gotthard?
Vandenberg is no Van Halen... not technically nor innovative wise plus Van Halen has great clever original quality material!
I got to see Adrian Vandenberg in 'Whitesnake in the late 80s, I have the new "2020" album coming .
1. Vandenberg
2. Heading for a Storm
As far as I ever got...HFAS seemed to be going in a more keyboard-heavy direction. Then the video for "Once in a Lifetime" and the song itself off Alibi confirmed my suspicions. Though the album covers for the 2 & 3 are killer, with HFAS being one of my all-time favorites.
Only Different Worlds has some keyboards, and on Alibi only the two ballads. Would not call Alibi a keyboard heavy album at all.
Never cared for this band. Heavy Rock by numbers.
Star Child to each their taste 👍🏻
