3 years later, still helping people solve the problem. Used the power supply from a neck massager, DVR works like a champ. Ordered replacement from Amazon. Although, everyone can start at 5:00 and get the answer by 5:45.
You saved me! Ours turned off and would not even power on. I started shopping for a new Lorex DVR, when I came across your video. Just like you said, all I had to do was go through our myriad of extra cords to find one that fit. The DVR powered on immediately and we could see all of our cameras! I cannot thank you enough.
I have a N841A8. Got a notification on my phone that the device is offline. Found it powered off. Checked power supply, it read 48.5V (rated at 48V 2A output). Opened the device and saw a momentary fan action when connected supply and also struggling LEDs. When measured voltage on board, saw severe fluctuation. Called Lorex, they suggested to buy a new NVR. Googled for logic board and found this video. Opened the supply, checked the 100uF 450V cap and it was bad. I had a 180uF, 450V lying around from one of my audio project (tube phono-amp). Replaced cap and its alive. Thanks for sharing. Interestingly we did have a power outage recently. Looks like Lorex has this issue for years now.
Can you please describe more of the issue and how you resolved it? I have the same NVR that has failed. Taken it apart but I am not sure what the 100uF, 450v is that you describe, is that a capacitor or resistor, and which was it, where on the board?
Is it the capacitor on the edge of the board, i get no consistency when testing pins on bottom of board with a multi meter but the other capacitor does have consistency.
@@NichoTBE Not the NVR, you will have to open the power adapter. Check the o/p of the power adapter, how many volts you see when unconnected to the NVR. Mine read 48.5V but when connected with NVR and measured on the NVR board, didn't get the desired voltage.
@@kunwar030477prashant NVR adapter shows 48.1v when not connected. Not sure how to test it when connected but there is a yellow/orange flashing LED near the power port on the pcb. The amps on my multi showed 0.6a when power brick not connected to the unit. Says output it should be 2amps. What do you recommend?
@@NichoTBE You can measure the operating voltage on the board under the female terminal where the male connector from the power adapter connects, while the NVR is ON. You will see the +/- soldering points. Fixing the adapter is alightly cumbersome. You will have to cut it open, take out the board, desolder old cap and solder new one and then glue it back. Cap I had was tad bigger so mine didn't close properly and I used electrical tape. Instead easy way out is, order a 48V/2A adapter online. Last I checked the adapter was $18-20 while the cap alone was $7-8. If there is a higher amp adapter available for lesser price, go for it. Voltage at 48V is must, amp greater than equal 2A as current is drawn by load while voltage maintained across the terminal.
Thank you for posting this! Our old 480p wireless Lorex DVR quit in a similar fashion, I think right after a power outage. I tested the power supply and it showed proper voltage, but after watching your video I was skeptical still and tried a different 12V power supply (a little lower amperage) and that confirmed exactly what your experienced. These 12V power supplies seem to be prone to dying after a power outage. I'm ordering another one on eBay as I am typing this. I'm glad I was able to revive our system and save myself the $800 price tag of buying a brand new system now. It's only a deterrent for us anyway and we don't actually rely on being able to get license plates and facial recognition from our system. Thank you for sharing this quick and cheap fix!
Had the same issue short power outage and dead lorex had several other powercords and bamm back in business thank you so very much saved a lot of time and money
So, bottom line, we learned that you did not actually need to remove a single screw, because only the external power supply was shot. Thank you for the time-saving tip. In my case, after trying TWO different power supply replacements, the HDD came alive. In the mean time, I had swapped the HDD cables to another disk and found the same problem ("No HDD", in system display). This lead me to "cut my losses" and unpack my BACKUP unit (Swann brand). The power supply for that one was same as Lorex, so I tried it, before disconnecting anything else, and now it all works. Problem solved. Thanks again.
Lorex has a prolong and serious issue with listening and responding responsibly to its customers. if this fantastic ukrainianbear05's web site was not available, more than $500 would now be wasted. Thank you. Tried changing the hard drive, still not getting enough power to boot up. I actually used one of the extra power plugs from the multi-plug camera adapter since I am not using all 8 cameras. Worked like a charm. Now I just have an extra hard drive but can't hurt to have a backup drive handy.

had a similar with my lorex DVR exact same model. just it was the power supply for the cameras. threw the old power supply out and replaced with a old Toshiba laptop power supply, and works and been working over 4 years now.
Thank you very much. You saved me a lot of $$$. I checked the voltage of my power supply and it still shows 12.0 Volts. But I suspect under a load it will not be 12 Volts. I found a spare car battery in the garage and hooked it up directly with some wires and a barrel connector I cut off another charger. It came right on and is working perfectly again. Luckily I discovered this after only a few days. There is an electronics surplus store nearby with a box of hundreds of power supplies for only $1.00 each. I'll be there tomorrow digging through the box. Maybe I'll buy a couple of spares.

Thanks for posting. Mine is Exact same issue this morning. My cameras are newer (5 years old from Costco). Camera was totally dead and I immediately tested directly the power supply (mine is 48VDC). It has 48VDC. This is directly coming from the plug with multimeter once connected to the center pin on the plug and one on the outer metal. So I assume it is getting 48VDC to the unit although there might be a failure that causes 48VDC to be available but in actuality it might not be able to supply what is needed due to whatever. So now I will take out the inside stuff and do some more diagnostics.

I happen to have an another adaptor that i use for a police scanner i just have to find the correct attachment for it to switch it to 12v . Wish me luck i hope it works.
I have replaced the stupid cooling fan on this board twice now, so when it started emitting 4-second-long ear-splitting beeps at 2:30am a few days back I figured it was time for another one. Alas, it would not even turn on this time. Wish I had tried swapping power supplies before opening it up again.
Thank you. Had the same problem with loocam cameras setup. I changed the power port and it worked. I opened the one that was bad and it smelled like burned wired. 👍🏼
Thanks Lots ……But I keep getting no signal my green light blinks wont stay on BUT i have power fan n hard drive however it flash lorax the say no signail all happen after I hit the breaker box do u know what that connect is beside the power plug❓HELP MY NEIGHBORS ARE A NIGHTMARE
Thank you !! im already planning to buy another one. Got it running after replacing the power adapter. Im not suspecting it to be the power adapter since a LED indicator inside the board is lit steadily. Thanks again !!
I’m hoping you could help me. My case is a little different. I could hear the fan working I see the word power licked up but no matter how many times I press the power button I don’t have nothing displaying on my TV. It doesn’t connect to the Internet. Please ask Si and I don’t have the money to replace the system I will pay my aunts cancer treatments and I’m very tight on cash What can I do to fix it?
Thanks for sharing, you saved me $500! I had the same issue. I had tested the power supply for voltage, and found 12+volts, but I hadn't considered that something else might be keeping the available amps down in the power supply so I thought the DVR must have fried. . I was on my way to Costco for a new system when I stopped myself and decided to check here! Again, thanks!
Thanks for this video. I have been searching all over for an answer. I have the exact same symptoms with my HIKVision DVR. I checked the voltage of the ps and it seems ok but didn’t try it under load. I’ll try a different ps tomorrow.
I have the same problem. I ordered a new power adapter which arrived today. After hooking it up, there's nothing displayed on the monitor. In addition, the power button on the DVR no longer works. I can't turn it off. I guess my problem was more significant than just the adapter.
A new power supply did bring the system alive, however all 8 cameras now only show a black screen, where prior each displayed a specific area of the store. I'm looking through the manual, but not certain why none of the cameras came up. I rebooted, hoping to fix the problem, but still no luck. Welcome any suggestions. Thanks
Check the cameras power supply. Try unplug the camera power and see if anything changes. If nothing changes then you will need a new power supply for cameras. Maybe get a surge protector for the cameras and av unit, sounds like you experianced a surge
@@TehArtfulDodger Hi Ukrainianbear05. Thanks so much for your reply. I appreciate. Nothing changed when i unplugged the camera power (the screen still shows the 9 separate views of a black screen with "Lorex" on each different camera). I will purchase a power supply for the cameras, and hopefully that might fix...again, thank you for your help. Will also look into a surge protector
Dear Ukrainianbear05, upon your suggestion we purchased a new power supply for the cameras, and "Voila", the system came up and is working! Thank you so very very much. As so many other users have commented, you saved us from expensive bills and repair. Thanks again! Grateful for your advice.
Hi I’m having the same issue but when I take the hard drive off it works.. put the hard drive in and it goes totally dead.. ive used the same plug for years and it worked all them times
Hi, I have Lorex dvr. My Lorex device has been giving me problems. On the circuit board there is a small battery that I think keeps the time. I took it out and did not put it back. Do you by chance know the battery number so I can replace it? Cheers Jane
Nice video. Thanks for the info, I never thought of that. Just for record, 2.5 amps and 2500 milliamps are the same. No metric terms involved. Also, don't use a 9 volt power supply because the lower the voltage is, the higher the amps drawn are. It may exceed the amp rating of the circuitry on the board.
I thought this would solve my problem so I ordered a new power supply and it still didn’t work, just kept rebooting. Took the case off and unplugged the hdd and it works again! So does this mean it’s the hdd at fault? Hope so as I’ve ordered a new one to try.
@@TehArtfulDodger I ordered a sea gate Skyhawk surveillance, more or less same as what was in it from new. It is a good 6-7 years old so hopefully you’re right that it’s just worn out. Thanks 👍🏻

Alas, it would not even turn on this time. Wish I had tried swapping power supplies before opening it up again.
Thank you. Had the same problem with loocam cameras setup. I changed the power port and it worked. I opened the one that was bad and it smelled like burned wired. 👍🏼
Thanks bro. I got an LED light and connect it to the AC the LED was blinking as the light was doing on the Dvr
I replaced my power supply with a 12V 4000mA. Still not working. Any suggestions?
Thank you !! im already planning to buy another one. Got it running after replacing the power adapter. Im not suspecting it to be the power adapter since a LED indicator inside the board is lit steadily. Thanks again !!
I’m hoping you could help me. My case is a little different. I could hear the fan working I see the word power licked up but no matter how many times I press the power button I don’t have nothing displaying on my TV. It doesn’t connect to the Internet. Please ask Si and I don’t have the money to replace the system I will pay my aunts cancer treatments and I’m very tight on cash What can I do to fix it?
Chech if the harddrive is the problem
Thank you so much, had same problem now fixed had an extra power supply, did'n even take the cover off. thx to your video
I have one but only 4 of 8 work. All of sudden the 4 just quit. How to fix it?
Thank you. I tried mine and it worket. Thank you you saved me a lots of money and time
Thank you so much for posting this, you are wonderful...
amazing i fixed them thanks for your video … help me a lot thanks so much 😘😘😘😘
I now have power but nothing displays on the monitor? Any fix?
I have same issue, the power button is stuck on yellow & nothing is booting up to my screen
I have the same problem. I ordered a new power adapter which arrived today. After hooking it up, there's nothing displayed on the monitor. In addition, the power button on the DVR no longer works. I can't turn it off. I guess my problem was more significant than just the adapter.
thank you finally my camera dvr works
I'll be trying this on mine tonight, it stopped powering on over the weekend. Thanks!
Switch plugs. If that dosnt work switch harddrives. Make sure to get the same model of hard-drive if u do
Thank you so much...just saved me loads of frustration.
Thank you! This worked and did fix the power issue. However, no video will display on any of my monitors anymore. Any recommendations?
Hi, I have Lorex dvr. My Lorex device has been giving me problems. On the circuit board there is a small battery that I think keeps the time. I took it out and did not put it back. Do you by chance know the battery number so I can replace it? Cheers Jane
Nice video. Thanks for the info, I never thought of that. Just for record, 2.5 amps and 2500 milliamps are the same. No metric terms involved. Also, don't use a 9 volt power supply because the lower the voltage is, the higher the amps drawn are. It may exceed the amp rating of the circuitry on the board.
That was hilarious! "Metric". Right -- as compared with the olde English system of standard amps or volts.
That was it! Unit works like new again. Well that saved me a few hundred dollars!
this worked for the night owl security camera too...thanks man
I thought this would solve my problem so I ordered a new power supply and it still didn’t work, just kept rebooting.
Took the case off and unplugged the hdd and it works again! So does this mean it’s the hdd at fault? Hope so as I’ve ordered a new one to try.
Moght be a worn out drive. Just make sure to get a harddrive that is rated for 24h use not all drives will work.
@@TehArtfulDodger I ordered a sea gate Skyhawk surveillance, more or less same as what was in it from new.
It is a good 6-7 years old so hopefully you’re right that it’s just worn out.
Thanks 👍🏻
@@TehArtfulDodger new drive fitted and working good as new 👍🏻
This was perfect, thank you. saved me lots of money and time.
Positive and negative shuted, no power, the power source is good what could be the problem
You took the board apart to figure out a bad PS. Kudos man!
Thanx man fixed mine with new power supply
Thank you! Worked for me. I almost bought a new one.
so the fan stopped working on mine and im afraid the cpu may have overheated. any idea where i can buy a new fan/heatsink ?
Anyone know where the factory reset button is located on these old lhv2108s? Picked up a used one and no password…
