FAULTY Swann CCTV NVR / DVR No power - Can I fix it?

- A friend asked me if I would take a look at his Swann CCTV NVR (network video recorder).
During a storm he experienced a few brief power cuts before being left without mains electricity for a week. When his power was fully restored, the unit no longer switched on, and was completely dead.
Let's take it apart, see if we can diagnose the problem and hopefully repair it!

Thank you! I was about to place an order for a replacement nvr8580 that suddenly died. Followed your advice and found the SS56 diode was a goner. The nearby buck chip looked ok. So onto Mouser and bough ss56 and buck chip. Soldered in the ss56. And it works!. Woo hoo. A 25pence fix !. Just subscribed!. Great channel!

Good people doing good for others and the environment. I have enjoyed your channel beyond meager words since I found it!. seriously, it's the thrill of the chase, the suspect (components) the investigation (shorted? grounded? open?, overheated?) the diagnosis and repair. Truly refreshing when click bait and garbage are more and more what we endure till we are exhausted!!
None of that here! Real (good) folk doing the Lord's work helping others and saving this valuable stuff from the land fill!

Thank you for this video! I bought a new PSU as the DVR had some power, just not enough to power up. That wasn't the problem! Using this video I found the 68uf capacitor at the power input was ever so slightly bulged and didn't notice before. I didn't know where to check the voltage and the test you did at the 2:55 mark gave me 1v, so I knew it was the cap. Thank you!

Took three months to eventually get the capacitor, but that didn't fix the issue. The diode and the silver square box above it (the inductor?) get bloody hot. I've waited so long for the cap and to not have it work is heartbreaking. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if I'm testing shorts, but I'm assuming the diode is dead like yours. Fingers crossed, delivery is estimated for 4 to 8 weeks. @@BuyitFixit
The diode should measure a reading one way, and nothing when you swap the leads around. If you get a low reading both ways then it has gone.
Thanks Mr Fixit! I've packed it away out of bitter disappointment for now and beginning the hassle of finding a single diode and not a reel of 100! From memory it had a resistance of 1000 one way and 700 the other way, and with power it's reading 4v instead of 48, but reads 48v everywhere before the diode. The chip looks fine visually, but if the diode doesn't fix it, I'm giving up and looking online for a second hand one :) Your video has been such a huge help, thank you!@@BuyitFixit

Thanks, yes although if it's a no power type of repair, I'd normally start where the power comes in and start working from there, so it wasn't really that far into the circuit.

I really need to get me a thermal camera. I've almost wore out my soldering iron by lifting components to test for the short. You make it look easy, but I know you have struggled through things to get where you are today. Awesome fix again sir.

I just bought the Kaiweets Thermal on Amazon and it's fantastic. Normally lists for 300, they had a "limited time deal" for 240, then an additional 10% off right now, then there was some other promotional 10%, so I got it under 200 bucks.

Thermal camera makes it so much easier than the back of the finger test huh Mick.
Another great fix,even though the DC-DC chip was an obvious fault due to it having a fair sized chunk of it missing.
The problem is waiting for spares in my case.
I now have a dedicated shelved cupboard for thngs waiting for parts to arrive,otherwise you can end up with a right old state of a work space.
It's good to have pals with broken stuff to give you more content i suppose.

I don't mind helping this guy out as he's a good friend and the one helping me rebuild the car currently. It's a Mercedes ML320 and oil was literally pouring out from the bell housing on the gearbox. Approx a good mug full after it was idling for a couple of minutes.
We had the gearbox out a couple months back and replaced the main crankshaft oil seal as that seemed like the likely cause. Refitted the gearbox, driveshafts etc, same issue.
Turns out a common problem with the OM642 engine is the oil cooler seals which you have to strip down a fair amount of engine to get to as its right in the bottom of the V (V6 diesel engine). We've had to remove the Air intakes, heat shields, exhaust pipes rear of the engine, turbo, injector manifold, injector pipes, inlet manifolds, swirl flap motor, wiring harness and god knows what else. It's a fair old job! and awkward as hell as you have to be pretty much kneeling on the engine to do most if it as the car is pretty high, and most of the stuff is at the back so you can't reach it standing at the front.
That's why my hands are in such a state. I also can't get away wearing gloves as I need to feel things like nuts and bolts.
It's been off the road for about 5-6 months now as I've had too much other stuff to do along with a couple of health related issues.
We've been working on it again today as I've got most of the replacement parts now (mainly gaskets), so hopefully we get it back working again sometime next week fingers crossed!

They are a nightmare as everything has to come off to reach it unless you have a lift and can drop the whole lot out the bottom.
Takes me back to the 80s when i had my Mach 2 Capri gearbox balancing on a Express Dairy milk crate as i was laying underneath and using a cut off gearbox splined shaft to align the new clutch and tensing my belly up to push that bell housing home😂.
Took me an hour and a half from start to finish.
I wouldn't attempt it now though,i might not get up from under the car again.😁.

P.S i used to use fairy liquid and sugar yo get the ground in oil out of my hands and nails.
Swarfega was always the thing i ran out of just when i needed it !
That's a very odd coincidence. My first car was a mk ii capri and I too remember lying underneath it and changing the clutch with a cut off spine off an old gearbox to align it too! 😂😂😂

Brilliant! Just the video I was looking for. My Swann NVR-8580 controller stopped working. Checked it with the DVM and found a short circuit across many capacitors which I guess means the DC rail is shorted. A thermal camera showed overheating of both the SS56 diode and 54360. Removed the diode and the short disappeared. Waiting on delivery of the diode. Hopefully that will fix it as I dont have facilities to replace the 54360.
Hopefully it's just the diode.. if the chip has failed and you don't have the equipment I'd suggest possibly a local repair cafe if there's one in your area? I volunteer at our local one where people bring in broken items, and we try to repair them and they can give a small donation if they wish. If not then perhaps a makerspace or something might be able to help. Let me know how you get on as it would be great to know my video helped you successfully repair it! 👍

15:37 noticed the copper layer is delaminated from the board around the solder pad that you attached the diode to. You can see the light reflection on the board distort as the copper layer heats up from the iron. Curious to know if the unit is still in service and whether or not you could do a follow up video to confirm and/or correct the delaminating.

If your friend had used a power surge protection bar, would it have prevented this damage ? Are those useful at protecting our electronics ?
I doubt it, as this has a power supply brick to power it. It could just be a coincidence or the power going off and on a few times quickly. A surge protector would have only protected the power brick as that's where the mains comes in.
I have a Swann dvr. Swann said the model I have is now discontinued. I changed the power adapter and it now shows a green light but the display on my monitor won’t move from the blue swan logo page. The dvr is now discontinued with Swann. I am not competent with opening up dvr recorder. Thank you
If the power supply you have used doesn't have enough amps to drive the hard drive that may cause the problem, or if the hard drive has failed. I think those are the first things I'd be checking.

Hi sorry but I am watching your videos in reverse order.
Just wondered why you did not for the diode just scape the solder mask of the ample pads and solder it direct to the PCB, which would also be better for cooling the diode?

Mine has the same board number as your one 357BOO
It has just stopped working. I am guessing it has a similar problem but nothing noticeable just a faint brown tinge on one side of the diode which you replaced after using your ir camera.
A few people have repaired their units and they said the diode was the problem. Have a look through the comments, I suspect your unit may have the same problem.

It would be interesting to know a rough cost of the spare parts? I guess pretty cheap. I was looking at my father in laws wahing machine which was having intermittent issues. Appears to be the selector switch but when i looked it up i looked it up i could buy a replacement for around £1. Only problem, id have to buy 1000 😂

i bought the same 8 camera NVR replace the power lead, with old one which was faulty, but its still not turning On, i am not Expert like you what shall i do to fix this NVR to turn back on, ? Regard
I'd check the voltage going into the unit, and see if you are getting voltage out of the regulator like I tested. If you're getting voltage in, but nothing from the regular then it has probably failed like in this one.
where do you buy your components? If i go to RS they require minimum order quantities of parts. I don't really want to buy 100 if I only need one.
Some items are listed multiple times as a reel or cut tape. So there is usually a choice of 100 or perhaps 5 or 1. There's also Farnell, Digikey, Mouser, Ebay and Aliexpress. All have advantages and disadvantages just as potential fakes or expensive shipping costs. Hope that helps 🙂

I volunteer at something called a 'repair cafe' where people in the local community can bring broken items and we attempt to repair them for free (they have to pay for parts if required). There's a number of these across the country so they should be one near you. If it's the same problem as this, you could point them in the direction of my video as I know a couple of other people's DVRs had the same issue.
Hello. My NVR wont switch on via power lead. I’ve tried different power leads and H drives but still nothing. Would it be possible to fix my unit for me or have a look? Thanks
If it's the same model as this one, check the diode at the left hand side and see if it's shorted. I had a comment from someone else with the same problem and that diode was shorted.

It's better to wait that everything is cooled of, because it can crack when you put
"cold" alcohol on it, when the parts are over 200c.
