When In Doubt

  • Was running Linux Mint 21.3 Xfce and yes I always upgrade Xfce to 4.18.4.
    As you will see in this video, ram starts going through the roof at idle.
    Who'd of thought that little old me would think of the solution as to why?
    Below is the script to getting rid of the horrible microphone icon when using either OBS-Studio, Simple-Screen-Recorder or any other recording app in Xfce.
    Open up hidden files Ctrl+H, open .config, then open gtk-3.0 then right click empty space and create new document, call it gtk.css, then open it with your favourite text editor and add this line to it.
    #pulseaudio-button .recording-indicator {-gtk-icon-transform: scale(0.0);}
    Save file, then reboot your system. Open a recording app OBS-Studio or something and you'll see a gap where the mic Icon used to be in your panel. So much better. All it does is mask the icon.

    the more ram that is used ....means ........... a faster system. I cant understand why people worry about ram usage.

      Well yes and no, but not if the ram at idle is climbing up and up all the time. It turned out to be the swap partition, making it climb at idle.

      @@slim_2280 If you mean to run without swap then make sure to adjust the overcommit_ratio, but be extremely careful with adjusting the defaults. You could be at a bad spot on the Dunning-Kruger curve, the advice of swap being twice the size of ram holds unless you adjust the overcommit settings.

      Fastfetch shows too much info, Screenfetch is no longer maintained, Neofetch going the same way. Then again I still use Systemback the Ubuntu 16.04 version which still works till this day and has been obsolete for eight years. Just because a piece of software isn't being maintained anymore, what is the harm in still using it? Everyone says you should not use obsolete software because of security risks, what security risks? If the software is not relying on the Internet to run it, just running locally in your environment when you are using it. I do not see a problem.

      Slim is right about his point things like neofetch are just shell scripts that display information. You could just "maintain" personally and it's just good as anything 😉 yeah

    No more Peppermint for me, but MX Linux Xfce😎 Really? No more color except white? Not for me thanks. I need color and that's why MX Papirus dark with Arc dark theme. Better not turn swap off because the kernel uses it. Did you try updating the icon-cache?

    Thanks for a good video I always enjoy them, I do wonder though so much work to undo to redo Linux mint to make your own. Why start with it anyway if you lose so much time redoing everything why not pick a thinner one. To each his own I suppose 😅 lol even still love the videos please keep up the good work

      Thank you. Yes I know I make it look complicated and I do make work for myself, but like I say I believe Linux should be made as your own and not as the devs want you to use it. I have another video being encoded in Kdenlive as I type. Going to try and go back to Manjaro, but looks like I won't, as there are things that Arch does, that does not quite sit right, then again an Arch user would say the same of a Ubuntu based system like Linux Mint. 😄 Thanks again Tommy.

    Anyone else surprised that a user who relies solely on neofetch for system metrics would also lack a cursory understanding of caching?
    Shame on the YT algorithm for dignifying this 😅

      Then again if you look at Htop and Neofetch, then you'll see that there isn't much difference between readings.
