I'd definitely say the Switch gimmick worked the best because it feels like the culmination of every prior console. Merging the home console and handheld form factor, providing no-nonsense controllers similar to the gamecube, integrating motion controls like the wii, and HD display/gamepad-esque device from the wii u.

Honestly yes, it also managed to avoid *almost* everything bad about other consoles - if joycon drift didn't exist it would be perfect imo! And in terms of the hybrid gimmick, I've never loved something more about a console, I often use both and it is so convenient!

Same here! I just about missed out on the Game Boy because I didn't really know much about video games at the time, so the DS was my first!

Maybe they took the name too literally and swung it around like Bruce Lee does?

This sounds like the optimal way to use them to me!

honestly i think with the wii u they were trying to make a home console version of the DS but it failed due to how reliant the DS was on it being a hand held where the screens where close enough together to be able to switch the one you were looking at in a moments notice. but the wii u definitely led to one of the best consoles as its obvious that the switch's handheld mode was based off of an improved design for the wii u slab. also nintendo were ahead of their time with the virtual boy but that also had a benefit on the VR market, it showed everyone what not to do when making a VR headset.

For me the WiiU felt like a Frankenstein’s monster deal stitching the DS screens, wii and what would become the switch all together into something horrendously pointless, at least we got the switch from it lmao! - also yeah, the issue was they were waaayy too early on the vr trend, and if they’d waited a bit more for the tech to advance (and if they funded it at all) there could have been a world where Nintendo actually made something cool

@@Vengefulowl I honestly think zelda VR would be so cool, like BOTW style game just virtual reality - pokemon could be cool too but it feels too ambitious i reckon

I think the stereoscopic 3D of the 3DS is sorely underrated. It didn't really open up new gameplay possibilities - but it made its games look so cool, in a way that can never be achieved by simply scaling the graphics up.
The real problem was that it doubled the things it had to render, which is problematic for a handheld. Gen 6 Pokemon was the poster-child of what could be achieved in 3D, aaaaand then by Gen 7 they gave up on 3D because it was too resource-intensive. They tried to alleviate it with the more powerful "New 3DS" - but by then, the 3D was losing its wow factor. It shouldn't have, but it was.
Still thinking that the Switch has the strongest gimmick, just had to say my piece on that.

Honestly if the 3DS came out maybe just a year or two earlier (and then the new3ds a couple years earlier too) the 3D aspect would have had much more of a kick to it I think. By the time it came out, the 3D craze was definitely dying down if not completely vanishing and it almost missed the boat really on the 3D craze - don’t get me wrong, I had some fun with it but found myself often just not bothering to use it other than for things like Pokemon cutscenes occasionally. But yeah agree, switch gimmick rules imo!
