  • Anthony Ray Hinton shares his story and discusses his book, "The Sun Does Shine" at Politics and Prose on 4/2/18.
Hinton was twenty-nine when he was arrested on two counts of capital murder in Alabama in 1985. He was innocent, but he was also poor and black with an incompetent defense attorney. Hinton was convicted, sentenced to death by electrocution, and spent the first three years on death row in silent, bitter despair. Then he became determined to survive, and even to thrive. He kept his own spirits up by bolstering his fellow inmates, and found new representation with Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative and author of Just Mercy. Released and exonerated in 2015, Hinton is now an advocate for prison reform and a compelling speaker on the power of hope.

Mr. Hinton is extremely inspirational and my hero. It’s sad that as a combat Veteran that I must admit that the United States does not deserve for one person to shed their blood in the battle field for a country with so much inequality and such a corrupt evil judicial system. I am a white male and I to have first hand, had to experience the evil corruption in our judicial system as a innocent man. My three daughters were taken by CPS one year and nine months ago on a false allegation and I have never been arrested on any charge but the juvenile system tells me that an allegation proves guilt. It’s sick, sad and demented. I am just like Mr. Hinton, I will not accept guilt as a innocent person, ever. And I will continue to fight like a pit bull in a bloody fight until I get my daughters back and prove my innocents. It’s that simple.

Well done Ray! One of the best true story books I ever read. God knows how many times I cried, this book is very touchy made me emotional. This book shows you how broken and biased system we have. Sometimes, I felt I was with him in prison. I can't imagine how hard is on Ray to not only lost 30 years of his age; but also how hard could be in a death row. I admired Ray's strength, help hope all these years and how he forgave his enemies.
I love it , I love it, I love it.... May God bless the rest of his life , Lester and Bryan. Lester is an example of a true friend. I would say, may be we can find a person like Lester one in a Billion.

This is the true injustice of this country. This happens all of the country. I pray for this broken man. Our skin color is still the biggest factor in this system. We are guilty before proven innocent. I'm in tears.
