"They Couldn’t Take My Soul": Anthony Ray Hinton on His Exoneration After 30 Years on Death Row

- democracynow.org - Days after being exonerated and freed from an Alabama prison, Anthony Ray Hinton recounts how he got through nearly 30 years on death row as an innocent man. Hinton was convicted of murdering two fast-food managers in separate robberies in 1985, based on scant evidence that later turned out to be false. Hinton is said to be among the longest-serving death row prisoners ever to be freed after presenting evidence of innocence. Hinton joins us along with his attorney, Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative, who says race, poverty, inadequate legal assistance, and prosecutorial indifference to innocence conspired to create a textbook example of injustice. "This is a very powerful demonstration of the critique of the American criminal justice system, which we contend treats you better if you’re rich and guilty than if you’re poor and innocent," Stevenson says.

One can only imagine how many people have been put to death that were innocent, or were setup by some corrupt cop.
Exactly. Those stories will likely remain unknown or never be released as they would be amongst the biggest shames of the American criminal justice system. We know of one though; William Stuckey, an innocent man who died in prison and was exonerated posthumously.
lifestraight The whole Just-us system is skewed to support those with money and we don't really care about the poor. I had a corrupt cop try and set me up for assault and it took me an entire year to defend myself, without the help of a lawyer because I couldn't afford one. If society really cared about justice, the whole legal system would be changed so we all got a fair trial.

Very sad. I can't imagine how many more people have been wrongfully imprisoned. Based on the sloppy police work, I've seen personally, I'd expect a lot more. Some estimates have it at 3% of those imprisoned. Anyway, good coverage. $1 *****
People interested in public service in the legal system should have the highest integrity,honesty and a love of the truth. I believe the media played a big part in this case by stirring up outrage of the crime and the two victims

In other words, prosecutors and law enforcement officers and judges know good and darn well they can get away with creating nightmares like this and smashing innocent people.
What do they say now, how do they feel (do they feel anything) police officers, prosecutors, guards and the prison director when they realize they were holding an innocent man?
