Hey all ! I’m trying to build up my poetry collection so that I can return to the world of poetry with some solid recommendations. If there are any author’s in particular you want me to look into (genuinely, or to roast, although I do like to enjoy what I read) let me know !
Hey! I'm not from the US (nor from an English-speaking country for that matter), but here's some recommendations of some books I have really liked (loved):
Louise Glück - The wild iris / Averno
Sharon Olds - The father / The dead and the living
Ada Limón - Bright dead things
Natasha Trethewey - Thrall / Monument
Terrance Hayes - American sonnets for my past and future assassin
Anne Carson - The beauty of the husband / Men in the off hours
Ocean Vuong - Night sky with exit wounds
Jericho Brown - The tradition
Denise Levertov - Life in the forest
Forrest Gander - Be with
Jorie Graham - Sea change
Hilda Morley - Cloudless at first (or whatever you can find, she deserved better)
(Some other authors that I'm guessing you already know, but whose work I like: Lorine Niedecker, May Swenson, Elizabeth Bishop, Marianne Moore, Charles Wright, Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, WS Merwin, Muriel Rukeyser, Gwendolyn Brooks, Essex Hemphill, Amiri Baraka, Seamus Heaney, Robert Creeley, H.D., William Carios Williams, Robert Duncan).
I would also recommend the New Yorker Poetry Podcast, which consists of conversations around particular poems with their authors. The episodes are really short and entertaining, and most of the guest-poets are very interesting.
I'm sorry if this is just a plain list, or if it was too much. I just get excited when people talk about poetry in mainstream media (other than these self-help poetry books). I know a little more about Spanish-written poetry (which is my native language), particularly Latin American poetry, if you're interested in that.

There's nothing that makes me cringe more than Harry Potter adults.
Honestly, the part that really irks me is the fact that there are so many interesting contemporary poets working today who are struggling to sell books and survive. I just wish they would get more attention, because some of their poems that touch upon the same issues mentioned here are so nuanced and breathtaking.

I totally agree! I’ve been on a large poetry site for the last five years and honestly, there are some people on there (not a lot, but a good handful) that put many of the famous Poets to shame.
It’s sad because the first poetry book that I read completely was ‘milk and honey’ (I’m a teenager and was recently introduced to poetry) and after reading it I genuinely thought that it was good. However, as I began to learn more about poetry, I came to find that this was sadly not the case.
I do appreciate what books like this do to get people into the genre. And if the book meant something to you, there no reason to discount it! :)
Steve Gaborsky You should check out “12:12 Midnight” by Danielle Ever Rose, it’s a poetry collection I just read last month and I thought it was a very interesting and creative read.
Same, I’m an aspiring poet who got introduced to poetry through Lang Leav’s (expensive) books and now I’ve moved on to other authors, I thought it was good (it was, as a starting point) so I guess it’s not all bad.
Rupi Kaur's "poetry" is like when I had to write a paper in highschool and I couldn't streatch it to ten pages so I just double spaced and made stuff up.

Your poem at the end. It was beautifully crafted. It made me uncomfortable, but it comforting somehow. The relationship between men and women is complex it’s hard to sort out what was taught to us and how we to figure it or try to figure it out. Holy shit you need a separate video for your writing. I’m excited for when you get to publish your work.

(my tone is anger at capitalism not you lol) if you look at all the instapoetry books now, they are all published by the same company. if i didn't value the quality of my work it would be so easy to make a killing.

Pain trigger prose statements to get the attention and then if the person don't like the poem they feel guilty, or they feel ashamed or feel like they must like it cause of its subject matter. This is the mind games and arm twisting efforts her work and many others like Rupi Kaur, is doing to the reader.

and then we get people like gabbie hanna trying to convince impressionable fans that critics of work about trauma are criticizing the writer FOR their trauma + for making their art based in it. that is so manipulative! plenty of those of us criticizing are also survivors of trauma. we're criticizing the writing as alleged 'poetry', not the content FFS

The poem you ended with is soo beautiful
Although menstruation could of course be triggering for some people, the reality is that it is an overly-stigmatised topic that I would’ve thought a feminist like Lovelace would be wanting to destigmatise, not make it into a content warning as if it’s as horrific as suicide, domestic violence, child abuse etc. I’m actually kind of disgusted that she’d consider menstruation such a ‘sensitive’ topic that she had to include it there.
i completely agree. i just think it added to her content earnings being performative “and maybe more” and unhelpful.
I could be wrong but it think the period warning is for trans women. I agree about periods being too stigmatized though.

It would be better if it was advertised as one of those books where it's just nice things you buy for your grandma or something. Rupi Kaur has a lot of affirmation quotes and that would be fine to sell like that. The other things are fine too, like it should've just been advertised as something else other than poetry.
I always say that and ppl come shouting at me as if I said something very wrong. All these poems feel like ‘thoughts’, and I just can’t seem to find a better word for it. It certainly doesn’t feel like poetry.

Me personally, I would be glad to see "racism" in TW: as I have been targeted for racial slurs etc..many times, and still, the topic of racism itself can trigger those trauma memories. As for poetry review, no, tI wouldn't class those as poetry - they are more like statements.
This is great! My thoughts exactly when I read this book. Please, please, please do videos for the other two! If anything, they’re even worse!
A poem that uses shape really well is Triptych by Diana Nguyen.
I love the ideas and the potential it had, it just wasn’t executed properly, but I appreciate how it’s getting a lot of people who don’t normally read to start reading.
I think menstruation really is a valid tw for people who don’t want to be reminded they had them, it also ties into the SA theme like people who don’t want to remember "being an adult" in that moment
I read this when I was 11, at the time I was new to the poetry thing and even I thought to myself “this is trash”

This is such a delayed response to an old comment on an old video but I just went down a Rod McKuen rabbithole because of this comment and it was so enlightening. (It also led me to a Rupi Kaur interview which led me to dislike her even more...)

way late to this but i think the trigger warning for menstruation is for transmen or something (i am a transman), that being said, i dont like trigger warnings for 90% of things. it doesnt help me grow as a person, just more sensitive and avoidant of trauma and things.

This is banal tripe, its not poetry and I will never refer to is as such. Its more brain farts of their inner monologue or stream of conciseness. There is no poetic craft behind this stuff at all.

Watched this immediately after reading, and oh my gosh we had the SAME reactions, lmao. Most of the poems you chose to read aloud that made you laugh/cringe were the same ones I'd just read off to my partner sitting next to me. I yelled out "THIS SHOULD JUST BE PROSE!!" more than a few times. 😂 Good to know I wasn't just being bitter.
The one thing I see a lot with books like milk and honey is they are more shower thoughts than poetry and I think a good poem is where you use alot of imagery so where even with people who have never read poetry and still enjoy it and the poem actually be considered poetry often times people like these books because they are easy to understand, read no brain game and that's helpfull in many cases but they are often times shower thoughts I think a good poem for people who haven't read poetry before is imagery based poems that get straight to the point but are good
You should try Nikita Gill's poetry it's beautiful. Her work got me into poetry and writing some of it myself!

This whole book is just noise.
I think part of the “arbitrary” form of this writing style is that these writers, to break into the club, are using social media platforms to share their work and gain recognition initially. That format itself is very space limited, necessitating condensed writing, and the “random” line breaks help to visually flag to potential consumers that if they are a poetry fan they might like to stop and sit with this post - otherwise poetry fans could easily overlook a post they could actually enjoy. I think a lot of this poetry tends actually to be prose poetry with line breaks for marketing. Publishers then probably want the work to be printed in the Instagram format because that’s the layout that readers are now expecting. Okay, so why are they using Instagram? Isn’t that trashy, distasteful? Maybe, but these are often people who didn’t necessarily have the opportunity to major in literature at college, because of pressure to focus on vocational subjects, or because of economic disenfranchisement due to being from immigrant families, mental health experiences etc. Kind of like the writing equivalent of outsider artists. I’m not saying that Lovelace or Kaur are specifically good writers, but some of these people actually are. It might be unpopular to say, but there is an elitist exclusion of these voices. Okay, that’s my rant for the day.

Also can someone tell me why do these ‘poets’ never use punctuation?! Like if you want the reader to read the whole as one sing sentence with no breaks then write it as a single sentence. Don’t give line breaks just to make it seem like poetry.

Triggered by the trigger warning, that's gold. As was your poem.. much development in 14 minutes. You should've ghost wrote the whole damn thing. I enjoyed the critique, really brings the slam to the poetry. I can't relate to these new poets they lack teeth. Your video had plenty of bite though.

I personally think you need to have gone through some of the things the author has gone through to compleatly get the book because i have this book and I absolutely love it
Dastiny Zarate I think the general ideas, and some of the messages are genuinely really really good - the problem comes with the writing. The writing is just bad and the messages get lost in it. The problem isn't that this book is trying to be something else, that's actually a good thing like let's not read the same sht over and over again; the stylistic choices like weird spaces between words and sentences are good, or the lack of capital letters. It's just not used in a way that would give this piece justice. It's used poorly and I'm sorry, but lazy writing cannot be excused as "a form of art" like tf I'm not gonna pay 15$ for 5 words on a otherwise blank page. Like 80% of this could've been tweets. That doesn't make it invalid of course, it still can be (and should) viewed as a piece of art. But just not poetry imo. A book of the author's thoughts and views? Yes. Poetry? Shakespear is shaking in his grave 🤷🏻♀️
