Top Super Shoes of 2024, So Far

  • Our running shoe reviewer Alex ranks the top five carbon-plated racing shoes of the year (so far), after running in countless pairs of the fastest marathon shoes from the likes of Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Asics, On, Hoka, Puma (and many more) since January. Initially, these bleeding edge racing shoes were designed to produce jaw-dropping marathon times, but more and more runners are using them to race every distance, from the 5K to ultramarathons.
    There is no question that anybody who wants to run fast nowadays should buy themselves a pair of supershoes: super-light running shoes with a carbon plate and ultra-responsive foam made to shave minutes off your racing time. But choosing the best kind of racing shoes for you can be tricky. Here, Alex shares his own Supershoe Power Ranking, and his insights on some of the top running sneakers out there.

      Thank you! Alex here: I can’t say I’ve worn them much for anything slower than race pace. But I suppose their close-to-the-ground feeling probably makes them a better easy running choice than, say, an Alphafly.

      Totally makes sense in marathon perperation since super shoes significantly reduce recovery time and it allows you to do more of those long runs... you should also run in minimal shoes to make up for it, but as long as you do it, it really makes sense.

    The Pumas (I'm a fan) are the cheapest of the shoes you reviewed. They are also indestructible. I have the version 2 and it's way past 1200k of running. Still good to go. Just ordered the version 3.

      @@marathonhandbook I run in Invincible as a dailytrainer, I tried on Vaporfly but they are too narrow for me. I haven't tried AF3, but I think I'm too much of a heelstrike for alphafly. Rocket x2 are super comfortable, but have a little too little foam under the heel

    • @marathonhandbook
      @marathonhandbook  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Since you’ve dabbled with HOKAS, I’d be curious to see if you’d like the Cielo X1 or the Skyward X. The Cielo X1 is a racing shoe with lots of cushioning that might give your foot a bit more space than a vaporfly. The Skyward X is a bit less aggressive than the Cielo X1. Not quite as fast, but more accommodating to a heel strike. We made a video about each one, actually:
      Cielo X1: m.th-cam.com/video/HF_QqeUcPC0/w-d-xo.html

      Totally. You might want to check out the On Cloudmonster 2, or the Cloudmonster Hyper (video forthcoming for this one). They’re similar to the Skyward X. Either way, I’d try them on at a running store before buying them, if I were you. It’s the best way to know if the feel is right, and some people find On shoes a bit too firm.

      I have yet to try the SL2, but the Rebel is a fun shoe, and a now-rare workout sneaker with no carbon plate. It’s a bit too aggressive for easy runs (for my liking), but I’ve enjoyed it for tempo workouts.

      Hey Alex, the best thing you can do is visit a running store and see what fits best on your foot, but a good place to start might be the ASICS Nimbus 26. It’s a friendly shoe for beginners, and is well-cushioned on the heel. We actually made a video about it here: m.th-cam.com/video/dHAYj_Oo4G8/w-d-xo.html

    You should NOT use these shoes for racing only! In fact you should never race in any gear that you haven't familiarized yourself with. Yes, if you wear these kind of shoes in every training session, some of your foot and calve muscles will underdevelope since the plate is doing most of the work but you can make up for that by doing one session in minimal/barefoot style shoes for every session you do in super shoes. I'm currently doing 3-4 runs a week (hopefully It'll be more soon again) one in supershoes, one in barefoot soes and 1-2 in training shoes.

    • @marathonhandbook
      @marathonhandbook  วันที่ผ่านมา

      There is certainly a case to be made about “breaking in” supershoes for one or two runs before race day! I did a long workout in the Metaspeed Paris before racing in them, and was happy I did, because then I had an idea of how they felt. Loosely, my ideal formula is the following:
      Training shoes for easy runs
      Supertrainers for workouts
      Supershoes for races
      Barefoot shoes haven’t made it into my rotation.

      @marathonhandbook I don't really see the point of running in 300g high drop shoes at all. I''m seriously considering saying goodbye forever to all shoes which are neither carbon plated nor barefoot. Shoes like Pegs or Cliftons etc. just combine the disadvantages of both worlds
