I would not recommend the Hoka Clifton to anyone! I’ve had three pairs that have lasted me less than 5 months each, and have really did damage to my feet because of them. The heel is way too high and the heel cushion crumbles so quickly and you are stomping instead of running! It also makes you lose muscle on the front of your feet. Do not get these shoes!
I just hit 1000km on mine and im loving them! Looking for a new pair this summer but thinking of getting another pair on the Clifton 9’s tbh. Sorry to hear about your experience tho
@@marathonhandbook tbh, I haven’t started tracking my km’s on Strava with shoes until my last pair which were the asics cumulus. I got about 600 until I finally retired them. I had a bad case of planters fasciitis, which was the big reason I left and got introduced to the Hoka brand. I’m now using the Mach 5 for my shorter/faster runs and looking to get another daily runner. But like I said, the Clifton 9’s have been so good to me that I’m considering just getting another pair
Nike Invincible 1 is still my go to easy run shoe, wonderful for half marathon distance on gravel/ paths. Only around 150-200 miles on them, currently trialling the NB rebels v4 which are very similiar but i reluctantly had to return as the UK 9 were too small.

Hey Dustin, we're working on a similar video for racing shoes, so more on that later. For now, are you looking to try carbon plated shoes for racing? Or are you sticking with traditional trainers like you listed? If it's the latter, the five in the video are good choices. If you're open to trying something that still feels supportive like a traditional trainer but with a bit more pop, the On Cloudmonster 2 might be a good pick for you. We did a review on it here: th-cam.com/video/4j8-wk7IcS4/w-d-xo.html
@@marathonhandbook definitely something lighter and a bit more pop. The cloud monster 2 unfortunately goes up to a 14 and I’m a 15. I’m leaning towards the endorphin speed 4 but I will keep an eye out for yalls video! Thank you
The Rebel V4 is light and bouncy, and could quickly transform your LSD to LFD! If you like New Balance, but want a bit more cushion and support, I'd opt for the 1080 V14. You can likely find last year's version, the V13, on sale somewhere.
Any recommendations for someone who likes a widetoebox, zero drop shoe? I currently run with topo athletic and I really like them, but I’d like to try out some other shoes that are out there. Personally Not a fan of altras.
Zero-drop shoes today are few and far between. Are you interested in a racing shoe? If so, the Under Armour Velociti Elite 2 might be a match. It's not 0mm, but the stack is low, and they feel much closer to the ground than do other supershoes.
@@marathonhandbook It won't be a match, as it is a typical toe squeezer. You recommendation proves how little people understand the basics of shoe-foot relationship.
The Hoka Clifton 9 feels firm and not soft like my first actual pair, ASICS Gel Nimbus 25, for my first run. Also it is more narrow, should I wait and run in it more or should I return.
@@marathonhandbook No, but I usually prefer the wider versions. I'm probably going to return them and get ASICS Novablast 4 instead. It's just that HOKA Cliftons don't feel like max cushion shoes to me and I don't know why.
The Balos is a fascinating shoe - for these purposes, though, we are calling it a workout shoe, as opposed to a training shoe, because of its PEBA X foam.
Dang, I never thought about trying the 880. I was just at NB store yesterday to try the 1080v13 on and while I like the it's very squishy, I almost felt like I was on high heels lol. It's not stable at all, or I should have tried wider foot version?! Btw, do you happen have adidas ultra boost 22? I bought a pair a few months ago because of all the hypes, but I find it's very stiff, or it takes time to break in? I have 1080v11 and Clifton 8 and they both are so soft on feet compared to UB22
The 880 might be a good choice for you, then; you will feel the ground a bit more. At least worth an in-store test. And no, I haven't tried the Ultra Boosts. It's on the bucket list!
Thank you for the review Alex... I use Cliftons, but recently tried (in the store) and was impressed with the New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v13. Just wondering why you picked the 880 over the 1080v13, thanks
Alex here👋 I went with the 880 over the 1080 because they offered a bit more connection to the ground. The 1080’s cushioning took a while to get used to. That said, the 1080 is also in my rotation - very comfortable. And I can see how you took to them if you’re already a fan of HOKA
thanks for your top five! With regards to the invincible 3, I was put off by the many reviews that said the shoes had heel slip issues and were heavy. You didn't experience those issues?
I didn’t, but I also think people with particular skinny ankles/feet should look elsewhere because the shoe trends a bit wide in that area. As for the weight, I find that the Zoom X foam’s bounce counterbalances it. They’re worth a try: ideally, an in-store test.
Heel slip is maddening and the arch feels like it's trying to murder my foot. I've been running for 15 years. I've had probably 5-10 shoes a year in every brand and it's the only shoe I've absolutely hated with a passion I don't get why people buy it
Hey! I just have a question about my personal pair of running shoes. Can you compare my shoes (the under armor charged assert 10) to any of these shoes? Most specifically the brooks glycerin because i think they will be the ones for me. Thanks!
Alex here: As far as I’m concerned, NO! Or, at least, not exactly. The NB supercomp trainer is in a hybrid category between training shoes and racing shoes that we’re calling supertrainers (essentially, souped-up training shoes that are a bit too cushioned to be racing shoes.) And FYI, we’re working on a Top 5 Supertrainers video. Stay tuned!

About ready to get the Mach 6.. just waiting till I actually need a pair not just want a pair 😆 I'm sad the Mach didn't make your list. Curious if you've tried it. Cheers!
Alex again - I did try the Mach 6! The reason I didn’t add them is because they are light like a workout shoe, and in this review I stuck with daily, more durable trainers. I don’t use the Mach 6 for easy runs because they make me go too quickly - but they’re nice for workouts. One of my favourite non-carbon plated workout shoes.
Adidas SL2 will destroy performance wise 41, all that's left of Pegasus is maybe the looks. Novablast 4 is fine. Nike is crappy lately all around. Vomero 17 maybe their best shoe lately but could have been easily even better.
Brooks are so good, I always thought they were a lower end brand, and I think yes they are but that’s because they’re very underrated, I got the Brooks Adrenaline with the pronation guards, and flat sole, perfect running shoe 👍🏻 👌
Brooks is what I trained in completely during my college XC and track years. They discontinued the Ravenna and I switched over to Asics, but I just picked up a pair of ghosts as a daily trainer. I like them better than my Asics GT-2000 I used last year for sure!
I had to give a thumbs up because I really love my Glycerin’s. They are a workhorse. They will last a long time. I have about 250 miles on my pair and they still feel and look great. As far as Nike and ASICS are concerned, I like the Novablast and the Vomero 17’s a bit more than your choices. Nevertheless, to each their own.
Hey, Alex here. I’d suggest you visit a running shop and have a knowledgeable worker fit you. A training shoe (and not a racing shoe with a carbon plate) is a good place to start. After that, you can test different heel to toe drops (the difference in off-ground height between the shoe’s heel and its toe) to find out what you like. The shoes in this video are pretty safe picks, in my opinion. But nothing beats testing a few pairs yourself to see what works best for your unique feet and stride.
