*When I'm Alone* is Dany's song... Ale and Pau accompany with only their instruments... no harmonies or backing vocals... the blacked out solo beginning and ending with Dany alone in the spotlight is beautiful and quite fitting for this song and what it represents...
Dany wrote this when the girls were at Berklee Music College (aka BMC) in Boston back in 2015 attending the summer session they offer(ed)... she got very homesick and also had a homework task to write a song... she hadn't any ideas, time was running out, and being homesick was devastating... she recorded a teary vlog about it... afterward she realized she could harness the emotions and pain she was feeling to write her song... i haven't heard what grade she got for it but many of us hope it was an A+... Dany has also stated several times that when she writes a song, it is from her heart and whatever emotions she is feeling at the time... so here we are enjoying this truly heartfelt song of loneliness and heartache...
speaking of Berklee Music College, their concert at "Liceo" (basically Spanish for "learning place" or "high school") had multiple purposes... for one purpose, the story is that they needed something to submit to Berklee showing Ale's and Pau's chops and how well they played their instruments... this because both of them were less than 15 years old which is/was the age cut off for the summer program they were wanting to attend... so each of them chose a song to show off their talents... IIRC, those songs were "Hysteria" for Ale, "Everlong" for Pau, and "Crazy Train" for Dany... apparently BMC accepted their submissions because all three girls attended at the same time... while they were there they did vlogs to send to Ellen DeGeneres to keep her and her show up to date on how they were doing while at BMC... this because Ellen and Target gave each of the girls a check to help pay for them to attend the summer session at BMC...

When the girls attended Berklee, Dany was often "alone" in every sense of the word, despite being surrounded by people all day. In addition to being homesick Dany attended many classes without her sisters, she was usually the youngest student in her class, and at the time her spoken English was often halting, as if she was translating Spanish thoughts to English words as she spoke, instead of thinking and talking in English. Despite her circumstances and an imposing deadline, and writing in her second language, Dany somehow managed to write a timeless masterpiece that perfectly described her situation in such a way that it deeply resonates with anyone who's been in a similar situation. What a truly remarkable song.

The 2017 TedX version of When I'm Alone is also excellent. The recent Mexico concerts have Dany doing this song solo and acoustic. While all fan shot (for the moment, anyway), those are worth checking out as well.

Oh, I believe it's all them! I actually tend to be one of the people who view control of the effects by players while playing as a massive talent and not something to be looked down on.

An amazing song song written by a very homesick 15 year old Dany, these awesome young women have talent far beyond their years!

They say people often ask them if they're ok because they write very dark songs, but Dany says that they're not like that in real life at all, they're actually very happy people, it's just the kind of music they like to write.

I've discovered over the years that this is often the case - super well-adjusted people write very dark things (not just music, but maybe novels or movies), and people who have huge problems write very happy things. Strange, and I had kind of forgotten that, but I'm glad that's just the case here.

    God, I love this song!
These sisters are some of the most well adjusted people you could ever hope to meet.
Pau’s lyrics are much more a product of an active imagination than personal experience (Animosity is an exception).
Dany is more likely to write from a place of deep emotion. As an introvert Ale tends to write less emotionally but more conceptually.

There's a fun in-joke for Spanish speakers on this song. "When I’m Alone" sounds a lot like "huele a melón". So whenever you hear the girls referring to "smells like melon," they are referring to this Spanish pun.

Dad, here's some info for you. The concert at Teatro Metropolitan (Metropolitan Theater) in Mexico City was to showcase their third album *Error* live. Two songs they did not play live but as a recording. They were *Intro: 404* (not shown - Entrance song) & *Breathe* (outfit change).
If you want dark lyrics. The songs from *Queen of the Murder Scene* is an concept album aka Rock Opera aka Rock novel with 2 acts, 4 chapters, 3 songs in each chapter plus a prologue song. An album about love, murder, being psychotic and a suicidal female. And it's danceable & you can sing the lyrics. Oh goodie. *What fun!!*

One thing to realise, few songs are written by one of the sisters only, like "When I'm Alone" - most are written collectively, both lyrics and composition. In most cases, Pau will come with the main idea for a lyric or compostion, but then they start working together on everything all 3 of them. They finish the lyrics together and change it constantly until at least 2 approve. They work on the drum fills, on the bass lines, the guitar riffs. Everything. Dany works hard on interpreting and conveying the feeling Pau had when she came with the idea. The same goes the other way around. Ale is the glue, the master of harmonies and often the decision maker.

It’s 100% clear if you’ve seen their offstage personas, that they are not dark depressing people. They make baking videos (umm, are cakes supposed to be hard as a rock?), play video games while screaming at each other, make karaoke videos, just basic fun stuff. The darkness comes from also being serious too, and being literary and honest they are not afraid to shy away from adult topics. However almost all the songs that seemed a little problematic were from the Queen of the Murder Scene album. It portrays a woman who becomes obsessed with another who doesn’t really even know she exists, the obsession grows from afar until she starts to go mad and ends in murder and suicide. Despite the grim sounding nature it’s told with occasional light moments and in a very theatrical friendly way. Once you get that down the songs stop sounding like teens going through an emotional crisis and more like very clever writing with psychological insights. Just saying, it’s not as grim as it sounds.

To my mind, the brightness of the music corresponds to being, "full of color on the outside".

When they went to the Berklee Summer Program, Pau and Ale had to audition to attend with Dany, since they were younger than the usual minimum age requirement. Needless to say, they passed the audition process and attended with Dany. Keep ‘em coming! 😎👍

The lyrics are kind of dark, but I think you underestimate how common it is for people (especially teenagets) to feel exactly like that and have those kinds of thoughts. Not to say that your comment was off-base about someone potentially needing therapy if they're coming up with lyrics like that. Mental health should be less stigmatised and treatment should be much more accessible, there are tons of people who could benefit greatly from it.
EDIT: though, I suppose making music and things like that can be a healthy means of self-therapy. Creative outlets are great for that.

You are right on all of the above. It probably doesn't help my frame of reference that a lot of music I've been listening to lately is from people who legitimately do struggle with mental health issues and music is their creative outlet.

The original studio recording of this song has Pau and Ale coming in much earlier. The song has been modified and rearranged several times over the years. Most recently Dany did a full acoustic version for their concerts in Guadalajara, Monterrey and Mexico City during October 2023. It is and has always been a highly emotional song for Dany to perform, but I think the context has shifted from the original inspiration for her. The When I'm Alone now seems to refer to her being all alone on stage or been when she is on stage with her sisters there are times when she is all alone in a figurative sense. If you notice, even at this show, the spotlight was on her completely for the introduction and at the end. Tellingly, Pau and Ale only do instrumental parts on this one, never singing harmony.
