You made a comment about the commentator who sounded like he was eating cigarettes. That brought back really fond memories for me! His name was Johnny most. You might do a search and see if you can find some of his recorded stuff doing the Celtics home games on the radio. When I was growing up watching bird I would turn the TV on turn the volume down then turn the radio on so I could listen to him oh my God he was so much fun to listen to because he would get crazy excited and he had all these cute little funny names he would use for describing things

I turn 65 in a couple of days, so I was privileged to watch Bird's whole career play out in real time while living south of Boston in MA. The stuff you see on the highlight reel happened all-the-time. What? Wow. Have you heard the story told by a eight grade player from Springs Valley High School? Larry was the P.E. assistant and a senior. The coach set up a trampoline 35 ft. from the basket and had Larry shoot (while bouncing) and for every goal he made, they cut one of the laps the younger players had to do. He made 7 out of 10. I saw this story in a comment on one of the Bird videos. The gentleman who put it out there even gave his name. I copied it onto my word program so I would get it right.

There is one reaction video I’ve seen where Robert Parrish laughs about that through the legs pass from Larry that he dunked. Something about cojones (sp?)to do that in the middle of a game lol.
I have the same reaction you did when Larry fakes passing over the guys head and then shoots it. My dad used to do stuff like that to me in the driveway! I love that clip

Watch where Larry was at the start of the play - free throw line, opposite the sidelines from which the inbound pass originated. He read the pass, made it to the far corner, intercepted the pass, turned, found DJ on the cut, and delivered a perfect pass in stride - in the span of 2.5 seconds.
All of that is unbelievable. But that isn't even the craziest part of the play. Larry had the awareness to realize exactly where he was on the court. He stood on his toes. He knew that his heels would have touched the baseline if he had stood flat-footed.
He didn't run fast, but he always beat you to the loose ball.
He wasn't all jacked up and muscular, but no one wanted to fight him.
He couldn't jump, but he was a career double digit rebounder.
Conventional wisdom says that MJ is the GOAT. Tough to argue otherwise. Hell, I saw them both in their prime, and I believe MJ is the baddest man ever to lace up sneakers.
But, Larry had a bigger impact, sooner in his career than did MJ.
Larry played against tougher league-wide competition during his peak years.
Larry never lost a single playoff game against MJ, much less a series.
Larry had an overall winning record against MJ - including a 3-1 regular season record in 1988. That year, Larry was playing with bone spurs in both ankles, and a compression fracture of the vertebrae. MJ was the league MVP, scoring champ, and was running with Scottie Pippen.
So, who's better? Honestly, my heart still wants to say it was MJ. But head to head... Objectivity creeps in, and makes a different case.

1:26 The "little kids" he played against, at the moment you pause, is a Hall of Famer, not just any random player (it's Dominique Wilkins).
It is not that Bird played against crappy competition, but that he was able to completely surprise them with his plays. As James Worthy said, "Jordan makes you look slow, Bird makes you look stupid"

Larry's advantage in his game, is that he had the game of a mid west white boy, good fundamentals, wasn't fast, but he worked after school, in a down town restaurant. After work, he would get in pick-up games, with the brothers in the inner city, and learned "Street ball"...😊
