@@gogyoq That's crazy I was literally I jus thinkin bout this shit before I saw these comments. I was like "I wish I was immortal, that way when I'm lazy I ain't gotta worry bout wastin time🤣🤣 N when I'm active I can take as much time as I want."
This video just popped up in my news feed 5 years later. Considering the current state of Marvel's phase 4 debacle, It's incredible how beautifully this video has aged. Of course there have been some great superhero movies such as the new batman and Spider-man: No way home, but I can't help but wonder how much fondly we would've looked back on the superhero movie Era if they stopped making films after Endgame.
Exactly. People are just bringing it up that he was wrong about iron man but he was right about a lot. The majority of super hero movies now are lame and boring.
Yea, Phase 4 has been disappointing. They stopped making Hero films for entertainment and instead for lecturing the audience. They also have a quantity of quality problem.
Exactly my thoughts. Marvel will bleed these characters until there’s no soul left. Logan gave us the most respectful ending to Wolverine’s story he could’ve had.
I think it probably helped Mangold's vision that Hugh Jackman - a man who personifies a particular superhero more than any actor since Christopher Reeve - was both ageing and willing to make one last hurrah. He would be enormously difficult, if not impossible, to replace in the role - so why not make one last attempt to make a film that captures the essence of the character, rather than a big budget extravaganza that was all mouth and no trousers.
It also means that even when they do cast another actor as wolverine, we all know that they will, at least the Hugh Jackman era has a satisfying ending.
Irn Bru Boy Agreed. Jackman approved of and supported this R rated conclusion to his 18 year tenure and I think time will prove Mangold and him correct about how they chose to end his story.
I hope Marvel respects Jackman's time as Wolverine to not recast him and leave the character alone. Include all the X-Men, recast them if you feel appropriate, but know that Wolverine wasn't a part of the X-Men in the original run of comics for the first 12 years.
With what's happening with Disney and Fox now, as great as it is, and as great it would be to see if Hugh Jackman keeps the role of the Wolverine in the MCU - it would make Logan mean less, I think.
@I Its launching pad on the top of the hill. Even sky isn't the limit. What "critics" like this channel fail to see/understand because of their own very narrow world view, that Marvel do not make "super hero movies". They simply make movies, featuring comic book heroes. And that is why 10 years and 20+ movies later, they are still going strong, and that is why they will always go strong.
Watching this after Endgame tells me that your analysis if this situation was totally on point. But I'm glad that Endgame proved you wrong on the finale.
How so? Endgame had an almost obvious finale... We knew they were going to save the day, and we knew some main characters were going to die. The genre itself will and is becoming movies with the same plot in substance with better or worse execution. Different story to tales but feeling like we've watched it before. But maybe there is hope; For an instance, the Trailer for the Joker movie seems small but meaningful, like if it was not a super hero movie but just a drama with some action. I wish for this movie to do fantastic as I think it may bring a new wave to the super hero genre, that if executed right could make super hero movies worthy of Oscars (although we know those are just a farse). But even then, he same plots will be repeated on substance. Lets hope for the best tho, that we can enjoy thrill cinema with the heatoes we love, and the new ones that are to come.
@@jcd561 they cant just change the tone of this series to something much darker (like the joker) that wouldn't make any sense. Only unless if they almost want to make a solo movie like logan because it does not connect to the previous movies of the x-men
Rewatching this and 2022 and what you said about superhero movies overstaying their welcome is literally happening. Such a great video man - thank you!
But he's still right, Iron Man is still going to show up in future movies since Robert Downey Jr just got a new contract with Marvel for future movies - he's most likely going to be a hologram or resurrected. So he's not gone for good.

@@jcd561 you haven't pointed out anything bad about the movie. The end was obvious, yes, but that's not the point of the movie. The movie is about the characters, their growth, their values and their journey. It's not a question of will they do it, but how will they do it, what will they have to give up to achieve their goals and what will the learn along the way.
I know that I'll be nostalgic about this movie when I get older. This movie isn't a superhero movie, it's a drama. And a fucking amazing one at that. I love this movie so much
It’s true. Many people who have seen Logan that I know don’t look at it as superhero movie. It only goes to show how different it is compared to ‘standard’ superhero flicks.
Logan was the end of a character we grew up with. I cried when Logan died. Because that's the end of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. It's incredible. And would lose it's impact without those 17 years of Jackman bringing to life one of the most respected pop culture character of all time.
To be honest, if you read comic books, it's pretty much drama what are you are reading, mostly good drama though, something that most movies lack and focus mostly in CGi or looking amazing.
1000% agreed. I felt the western, i felt the end of a part of my childhood when this movie ended. It is a masterpiece and you nailed it dead on if you ask me!
i consider it the end of logans story not the xmen...lets be honest logan and charles and to a somewhat equal but still smaller degree magneto were the lynchpins of that entire franchise. The actual XMEN barely did shit all. If it were not for the performances of hugh, patrick, and mckellan, and in the newer ones mcavoy and fassbender the movies would not be nearly as good and tolerable. In fact we can already see the decline in quality with jackman not being present in apocalypse. The best moment of the entire film was only his small cameo and seeing the very small moment of pain and then somewhat calm wash over his face when jean helped him. Say what you want about the story not being the best but you have to agree having wolverine in it would have made it better and that is the point i am making. The actual xmen have not had their chance to shine at all in all these years. Wolverine has had all the glory. His story is now at and end. They just need to now focus on stories during the years in which logan was out wandering the wilds of canada trying to find a purpose in life. The stories need to be really focused on making other xmen stand out and if they do that i see no problem in it continuing. I think it would be a mistake recasting wolverine as talks of that is already happening. I would so not go see that. Let the mans legacy rest a little bit jeeze. Not even a year and talks about maybe eastwood taking over Good God.
Though the New Mutants isn't necessarily a sequel to X Men, it is just another divne into this world, but on a different place, with completely different characters... so I think Fox should keep on what they're doing right now, but they should always keep in kind that every now an then, a story has to end...
Alastair Vergara It’ll probably be a relatively unknown actor that they pluck out if they ever intend to have another Wolverine as a main character. Similar to how Hugh Jackman wasn’t overly-famous when he was first casted, or Tom Holland for a recent superhero equivalent
o please, wolverine existed far before hugh came along, this movie only signified the end of an actor's portrayal of him, which was vastly needed. No character should be blocked from story creation by the image of someone pretending to be that character. That's the problem with movies, in the time it would take to write several effective stories about him, the universe he's in, and an effective true end, they made one movie equivalent to one comic. It explains why there are so many movies and yet you feel like only briefly touching on the world. They could have done so much more with the x-men but the physical problems with making a movie only gave a glimpse into that universe.
I think it's gotten to the point where the movies are influencing the comics. Wolverine in newer comic book looks more like Hugh Jackman, Iron Man in the comics looks exactly like RDJ, etc.
@@angeleaterstudios1004 that is good casting, iron man and wolverine was aways like that, the personality of some are getting revamped and looking like the movies a bit, but not the looks, dont forget that the artwork for most comics changed ALOT with time
I apologise about the fact this video was a little sloppily edited. I made my initial edit and was very proud of it however Fox deemed it not fair use so I have been working back and forth for a week now just trying to get this thing up and not blocked by Fox. For any of you who are new to this channel please do bare in mind my videos are usually edited to a higher standard than this but I have spent about 8 hours re-editing this thing, re-rendering and re-uploading when usually I only spend about 20 minutes doing that stuff so at this point I just want to move onto my next project. I really enjoyed it, and wouldn't've noticed the drop in quality had you not pointed it out in the video Great work as always, I look forward to your next video :)
The Closer Look I would argue a genre can never truly die but a franchise focused on a certain character can because that character will reach such a satisfying or crazy powerful climax that simply cannot be continued due to that level of tension never being surpassed again and all you can do is end the story satisfying the themes of the story and its message the whole way through without contradicting the heart of the piece. This is in essence what is wrong with super hero fiction as it is with Marvel and DC unlike other superhero fiction from other publishers. The popularity of Marvel and DC's characters are so extreme that people only want to see certain characters forever and the fact that their story can never end due to the importance of sales or characters truly change makes the story somehow incomplete. This is a reason I'm really looking forward to how Robert Kirkman and Image's Invincible concludes because that story has themes and arcs that are central the whole way through and always matter, whilst the big two have to keep their greatest characters going forever to a point where it's just ridiculous. Certain characters that have not hit their peak like Nightwing and younger heroes are really interesting because they have so much growth to go, but if their stories never end like their protégé's it will eventually become boring. I have no idea how you can keep writing interesting stories after an event like Secret Wars for Marvel where the multiverse literally collided into one mega planet of craziness before it was reset because it is important for characters to still save the world after this but nothing will ever be that crazy again taking all the tension away. All characters must end at some point it is the only way to finish a satisfying story, which means the main universe stories from the big two will never be truly great stories because without a defective end to a story people will become tired and lose interest. In conclusion a genre can never truly die only a successful story of a character can because stories that follow the same path can be just as interesting as long as new characters and writing is engaging. Just a thought
Love your work and this video has some valid points. I do agree with your point about scale. Especially, because a lot of characters lack adversarial intimacy. Something to thread them together emotionally, if not ideologically where they both have character pros and cons attached to their conflict. The cookie-cutter bombastic scope of final battles have worn thin.
Thank you for this video man. Logan was one of my favorite movies of the year so far. this just made me appreciate and savor it more. Keep up with the good work.
That's the only reason so many people like it. Literally everything else besides the acting (and overall visuals) is sloppy and outright bad. Just toss a sob story in there with good actors and people will like it.
Toxihex I can't really agree, I found that the visuals and acting fitted the movie. It was quite enjoyable and the emotional impact it left, feels unique.
The references to the previous Wolverine and X-Men movies were a really nice touch tho, cementing the fact that he's gone through all the shit we've seen him go through in the movies, and this is all of that catching up to him.
and replaced by a younger stand-in...that, 10 years down the line, will be replaced by a younger stand-in...that will be replaced by a younger stand-in.....see what I'm getting at?
I thought Robert was getting tired of playing Iron Man because he was starting to get typecast as him and didn't want Iron Man to be his singular defining role.
To be fair, she referred to him removing the bug attached to his heart and dieing momentarily. In the Logan version of events, the Wolverine didn't even happen.
After I watched the first 5 minutes of Logan, this sparked the exact opposite reaction for me. This is the BIRTH of a new superhero genre. Logan's massive critical and box office success proves that audiences crave more intellectual, artistic and mature superhero films. This movie gives me hope that in the future studios and directors will look to get away from PG-13, A.D.D. movie making and create real art with a fantastic theme: fictitious superheroes with real problems in the real world. Hands down the best line of the movie (Logan yelling at Laura): "WILL YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP.".
"Logan's massive critical and box office success proves that audiences crave more intellectual, artistic and mature" "films." No need for superhero. Nor in your sentences, neither in the movies. Just keep it clear.
Talk about mental masturbation. Logan isn't as intellectual nor as artistic as you believe mate. Moreso, if this is anywhere near your peak I'm afraid you're neither as intellectual nor as artistic as you believe mate.
John Smith same here. They ended his legacy in such a great and heart touching way and if they brought him back it would ruin all of that and take away any real consequences for any further marvel movies
But he's still right, Iron Man is still going to show up in future movies since Robert Downey Jr just got a new contract with Marvel for future movies - he's most likely going to be a hologram or resurrected. So he's not gone for good.
Take a moment to appreciate the mind blowing message this guy gave us and the beautiful scene at the end of this video. He amazed me with this revelation, for both the direction these stories should go and the deeper meaning of wolverine's final moments.
yeah except most people stopped caring about ice age after the first film. I just roll my eyes every few years when I see another ice age sequel being released.
Watching Marvel's drop in quality (not counting many weak films in their first 3 phases) made me come back to this video. Boy, Logan still feels refreshing years later. It's the kind of movie you want to see to get more than just a spectacle. This and The Batman are a welcome addition to the superhero genre.
About superhero films perhaps overstaying their welcome, characters getting old. I think Marvel is trying to avoid precisely that by proclaiming Infinity War as the end of an era, with a new one to start afterwards We’ll see how well it works
@@Rael14 we will have to wait until Avengers 4 to see how well they stick the landing. Infinity War was a monumentally incredible setup to the final chapter of the infinity saga.
But that is a problem itself, its not only the characters that is overstaying, the genre itself, marvel has the template and they use it ON EVERY MOVIE, all the marvel movies are essentially the sane, structure wise at least, just like westerns once before, unfortunately I don't think this new genre will get a closure, Disney wants to buy everything and fuck it Look at what they are doing with toy story, star wars, and many more to come, remakes and live adapt unecessarily being made for no single reason
@@vinicinfodexota5083 Agreed. When I view the MCU I can't look too deep into it, because I know there will never be a deeper meaning behind the movie(s) presented. Sure the films are entertaining and fun, but that's all that they provide. I shouldn't expect them to make something more than a generic action/comedy, however I'm still believing that one day that'll happen. They have the cast, directors, writers, funding, and much much more, so why can't we get something deeper? Films like Logan, TDK, and even Spider-Man 2 (say what you will about Tobey) all give me everything I want to see and more for this genre and I hope we will get more films like them in the future.
What's funny is that he was becoming too expensive NOT to kill off. Negociating a new contract with him would have been impossible, the guy could have asked for anything.
“If in a future marvel film Tony Stark were to sacrifice his life and die in order to save Steve Rogers especially after the events of civil war, that would be a monumentally powerful moment to end iron mans character arc. But sadly that will not happen because Iron Man is a cash cow and is simply too expensive to kill off.” ~Closer Look Damn. Thats a big meal bro. Lotta words your gonna have to eat.
tbh I almost cried when I heard him say that not only did he save steve he saved hulk hawkeye ant man and 1/2 the universe tony has and will allways be my at most favourite avenger and I am going to go watch all the iron man films in a row ;(
It's refreshing to hear a perspective that appreciates the origin and success of comic book heroes, but also understands there is a time to let go and create new heroes. Fanboys gonna simp. The intelligent will ask for something new.
The problem is that they don't kill off the heroes and leave them dead, they kill them off and then recast them. Peter Parker dies, enter Miles Morales. Tony Stark dies, enter...well I can't remember her name. Now, while I haven't read the Miles Spider-Man stories, I've heard they're pretty good. Still, why didn't Miles get to be his own hero with his own name. Why do they feel the need to link him to Spider-Man only to have Peter's shadow loom over everything he does. If every comic book had a story arc that resolved like it did in Logan, I would have brought more comic books growing up. Instead, all the characters today were already 50 or more years old when they started recasting them in order for the publishers to show how woke they were. What they should have done is given them a finale like Logan and moved on. Although to be fair, most of these new superhero are complete crap because of the need to put woke activism into everything rather than develop complex and nuanced characters with flaws.
Ive been saying that for years, over the decade. I was 18-20 when I recognize U.S heroes have stagnated. And I like them. I read up on them ect. The problem with Superhero universes, is that it often creates a hierarchy. And I still consume this media because I like fantasy action hero stories ect. But compare this to Japan and they let stuff go much more. Of course, lately they've really over extended a few action stories. But I think it would be fine if Superman went away for awhile, and came back later. Or maybe he only releases stories a few times a year ect.
The intelligent knows new doesn't mean good. If you are not open to criticism, how can you be open minded? Marvel has a long history with many characters forgotten; creating new characters that doesn't appeal to people is just part of the course. We learn and try again.
What I don't get is that Yukio explicitly said that the scene where Logan was to die was when he ripped out the device Viper planted in him, yet everyone thinks THAT scene is what she was referring to. And can she really see Logan's death if he's in another universe - because if that's the case my mind is blown.
Gemnist It's the same Universe. The X-Men franchise was just a big tragedy and Magneto was right all along. Remember when Beast said in DoFP about time, that if you throw a stone in the river, it will change its course, but eventually it will keep on going? That's exactly what happened. Wolverine changed how the mutants would go extinct, but they did eventually anyway. He goes out trying to save the remaining few of his kind in a last ditch effort to not make all his and the Professor's lives and missions be for nothing.
No, it's two. It originally was the Earth-10005 universe, but ever since the end of DoFP, it's been the Earth-TRN414 universe. That said, the Wolverine of Earth-10005 (who was seen in the vision) got his soul transported into the body of the Wolverine of Earth-TRN414, hence the Wolverine of Earth-10005 (the original one) is the one that died in Logan. So yeah, basically DoFP caused the stone to be dropped and "change its course" with two universes.
I actually think Tony Stark will die by the end of Infinity War. It would make a lot of sense for many reasons. The biggest reason would be that Infinity War has been confirmed as an end of a chapter -- a chapter that began with Tony Stark. Would be fitting to end with him. I think Peter is going to be somewhat responsible for the death. I'm thinking this could be Peter's "Uncle Ben moment". The event that teaches him the harsh lesson of responsibility. He can't just be a reckless kid anymore. Which would be why the Spider-man sequel would be set directly after Infinity War. Just my thoughts, lol. Amazing analysis and I agree that superhero movies have to change. I think studios are starting to pick up on this. I know many compare the superhero genre to the western genre. Not sure if I'm just naive here but I think the superhero genre is more timeless compared to the western genre. There's a lot more unique and different stories to tell. The studios just have to be smarter, bolder and more creative with which stories they choose to tell. Been going off for too long now with this comment, lol. Sorry! Love your videos and keep it up!! :)
It's the same reason why the dark knight is great. Like you said it isn't about the world being threatened it's more personal. This is why some people hate the dark knight rises
People don't like the Dark Knight Rises because the plot plays like it was written by monkeys tripping on LSD, trapped in a basement for 3 years with nothing to do but digest Ayn Rand's sterile philosophy by reading copies of " The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged". It was a shallow monument to all the boring aspects of Batman/Bruce Wayne's ascetic, rich-guy savior personalities with none of it's interesting parts i.e. the conflict with the Joker, ethical dilemmas, etc.
I'm kind of glad super hero movies have been done to death, dark knight is Magnus Opus of batman but I am starting to believe Nolan simply used it as a stepping stone to glory
Dark knight rises was a great film, was it better than Dark knight ? Hell no, but it was still emotional and had impact to the end of the trilogy, which is more than I can say about a lot of movie storylines
Its funny to watch this video and look back, that Iron Man died now over 3 years ago, but still the general message and the path the superhero genre goes down didn't really change. Rather the movies found a way to go down this path even faster...
i couldnt bring myself to watch this movie more than once. it was absolutely heartbreaking to see Logan die. The performance of the young girl was incredible, the chemistry between her and hugh was amazing. such a beautiful film
When that theme from the first movie comes in with your narration about Logans state of mind and disdain for the comics. Well done sir! +that ending - QQ
Man this guy, The Closer Look, is better than nerdwriter1. That other dude, sometimes, just talk in anecdotes or colorful dressing without any actual substance while this guy actually dissects the topic and talk about what it is all about.
THe scene when Logan looks at the X-Men comics is heartbreaking it literally depicts the death of Jean Grey, that means the Dark Phoenix happened, quite possibly in the envents of the X-Men Last Stand. He got angry to see his life and the ones he loved dessacreted in such a demorilizing way....
Beautifully put. Consumer fatigue is real and the superhero genre needs to mature and evolve as the audience (and the audiences tastes) evolve too. Characters need to die and not be instantly ressurrected. The stakes need to be smaller and more personal. We're tired of the world being on the brink of complete destruction every movie. We need endings. And change.
The Closer Look I'm a big fan of your videos, and have subscribed because of the video How To Make A Great Villain. Your channel is excellent and I wish you the best of luck for future videos
I think Infinity War is a great point to transition. Some people have to actually die, and the rest will be affected emotionally. I hope Kevin Feige can see this, and the MCU can take a darker turn. They can't go bigger after they beat someone with actual unlimited power. So they have to go smaller in a smart way.
In a cinematic universe, I'd agree, some may need to die. However, they also need to not be afraid to recast. Character's shouldn't be retired or killed just because they actors contract is up or maybe they die.
This comment section: “Hold my beer -iron man/russo brothers” “I will re watch all the iron man movies he was my favourite superhero” “Wrong wring haha eat your words” “Insert iron man quote” “Insert anything about endgame” To be fair it was a logical prediction and it’s not like RDJ is never coming back as he’s signed on, so I guess his prediction was partially correct
It's annoying, I was hoping for discussion about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comparison with superhero films and westerns. But everyone is laser-focused on the one prediction ACL got wrong...
Civil War was maybe the best Avengers film to date, but it wasn't a better film than Logan. Logan was absolutely brilliant from the action to the acting to the emotions.
This movie is one of my absolute favorites, it’s such a beautifully crafted film. I grew up with hugh as wolverine, so to see such a beautiful end for a character I loved until I was only a year from becoming an adult, was fantastic closure & really touched me
“As the animation quality increased, the written quality has decreased” with marvel movies it was even worse, the visual quality has decreased along with the written quality
I disagree with comic book films ending. The genre has been going on for 40 years. I do think there's way too many comic book films. I think Logan is the best comic book film since The Dark Knight. I think the MCU & DCEU haven't reached the level of films like The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, Logan, & Superman The Movie. But I don't think the genre will ever die. We may see the popularity die down & less films be made but the genre will never fully die. Superman for example has had films, shows, & cartoons made for nearly 80 years & there's still cartoons, films, & shows with him
Nicholas Levi Right! Like the characters are the closest thing we have to modern mythology. They won't just fade away from of pop culture unless people find new characters to take their place. And even still every possible new character would just be a mix of 2 older comic book characters. There's so many stories you can still tell and different iterations that have yet to be done
That may be true. Westerns are still around, but are not nearly as popular amongst the majority of audiences. They aren't the big box office winners but they are still around. Superheroes films will go that way. They'll be around but not nearly as popular. Our children might ask about them. I would prefer to say that they were impressive and bold films that died with dignity, opposed to unbearable films that never left us.
the closer look:*talks about how avengers cant die in 2017* marvel in 2019: Endgame will only have 2 avengers alive Edit:this comment was made before watching the movie and I did not look at any spoilers
The thing is, I wish they did. He implied that the death of iron man to save cap, or in Endgames case, the universe would have been an amazing END. And end is the word to focus on there. Endgame should have been the end. So many movies building up to an amazing climax which left no one wanting too much more. It would have been the perfect note to end it off on. But, it won't end. The MCU will get milked and milked until one day, superhero movies just... stop coming out in cinemas or on streaming services because they are no longer popular, or as he so eloquently put it "go out with a whimper." They won't be able to build it up like they did with endgame again. We loved the characters in the original avengers as we spent years growing and learning about them. Watching their movies. The new cast of heroes is good... but they aren't going to be as dynamic as iron man. As relatable as Captain America. As tragic as Widow. As it was the first time with those characters and those ideas in this world. If they somehow pull it back, I'll happily be wrong and enjoy it... but I think everyone knows I am not wrong here... It doesn't have much time left. It will end eventually. And unfortunately, it seems like it's going to be going out with a tiny depressing whimper... And not the last Hurrah they deserve. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
@@rocksnrolls I disagree. It's exceedingly rare, but very possible, for a series to go on continually for years upon years while still maintaining it's quality. The manga (and subsequent anime) series One Piece has been running continually for over 20 years with massive acclaim from fans. While manga/anime are different from film, I would argue that good enough writers, with the excellent acting performances of MCU's cast backing them up, would be able to pull the cinematic universe through yet another couple of decades. As long as they continue to emphasise their characters. Black Panther was virtually a masterpiece in this regard, the writing combined with Boseman's brilliant acting (rest in peace) is testament to how the MCU can still pull off a compelling cast, even in a new generation.
@@ceciliaxx yes, but it will eventually decline in popularity. And yes, Black Panther was good, not a masterpiece in my opinion, but good. No disrespect to Chadwick Boesman (Rest in peace). The acting was mostly excellent, especially from Chadwick, but the CG and the plot contrivences were a bit much for me. And One Piece and the MCU aren't 1 to 1 analogies. With the MCU, it's controlled by Studio executives who want to make the movie as safe and marketable as possible, but directors want to make movies that maybe the studios would find to risky and out there. And, If One Piece has a bad few episodes, people can forgive a few bad episodes if the rest of the show is good, and they won't loose much money. But with movies, especially ones with such spectacle and star power behind them, if there are a few movies that aren't good, people will loose interest, and if they perform badly, it will loose so much more money, and eventually, if and when this happens, studio executives won't want to make marvel movies, as they will become unprofitable. Because studio executives don't care about stories. They don't care if they upset people. The only thing on their mind is money. Can this movie help me pay for the extension to my house? Can this movie put more money in my pocket. Anime such as one piece, and manga such as Berserk (I know you didn't use this example, but I love this manga, and it's been going on for a very long time also) don't have such studio involvement, and if they do, much less money is at stake so they can afford to take risks and not put the same thing over and over again. And you said it yourself, it's exceedingly rare for a series to go on for ages and still be good. What is much more likely is that it goes the Simpsons (being a much more apt comparison, they are even owned by the same company now) route. Slowly declining in quality and becoming boring for everyone, and people will watch it because there is nothing else on, or they remember loving it before, and don't realise why they stopped watching... until they watch the next movie or episode and realise how far downhill it's gone. Or, the Western. It will eventually become less unprofitable to make them, and the public's interest will be picked up by something else, leaving the MCU to become more of an Old west. The mcu was amazing for what it was... but unless they end it soon... it will just be another Simpsons. If it had ended with Endgame, it would have been a beautiful, almost perfect way of ending the MCU. The first in its line up was the birth of a hero. The birth of iron man... it would have been poetically perfect to have Ended it with the death of the same Iron man, would it not? It's time for the superhero to go the way of the Western. And hopefully they know when to stop. Because, if they don't. It won't go out on the glorious bang it deserves, but will slowly whimper, and die quietly, barely noticed.
VietnamD0820 Yeah, he was saying that, and I was thinking, yeah, probably, but then oh, no, of course they won't. Yes they will, that's what everything's been building towards.
3:18 That tune...when I was a kid I broke down crying my eyes out during the first X-Men movie when Rogue took away Wolverine's powers (i thought he died I guess. The end of this movie may or may not have resurfaced old feelings) while this track played This is why that particular track always fills me with more sadness than any sad song I've ever heard. I apologize for this irrelevant to the video comment, i love these video essays, just thought id share my thoughts
People saying that he was wrong because End Game....Was he really? With this countless series, movies; sequels, presequels coming in the next few years? I dont think people will still feel or watch the movies/series with the same plots and tropes everytime, the superhero genre has become stale and stagnant. And it might be dead in the next years.
I don't know, man. Phase 4 despite its faults still attracts big numbers. So far, phase 4 collectively gross 4.8 billion so far, besting phase 1 (3.8 billion) and soon will surpass phase 2 (5.2 billion) after black panther wakanda forever. With how well received and emotional the comic con trailer this could have the paul Walker effect after his death during production of furious 7 and bring in an additional billion dollar hit after spider man no way home 1.9 billion! Of course. I havent even mentioned the upcoming 2 avengers movies kang dynasty and secret wars having multerversal consequences across all realities of the mcu, can possibly bring in xmen and of course the f4 being the springboard to those upcoming avengers movies will attract audiences similarly to how captain marvel did and we all saw how big that movie was a prelude to endgame

I'm glad more people are realizing that the superhero genre will not stay the hottest trend in Hollywood as I have heard idiots claim that superheroes will somehow be immune to fatigue, even though you always know superheroes when you see them, even when they try to be different. Ultimately the superhero genre will fade from popularity just like westerns, just like gangster films, just like universal horror films, just like slasher subgenre and so on.
RokaSoka I resepct your opinion but i have to disagree. I think super hero origin movies will be the thing that fades...but the genre itself can be mixed and matched with other genres. Superhero movies can be crime dramas (The Dark Knight), space operas (Guardians of the Galaxy), spy thrillers (CA: The Winter Soldier, or even westerns (Logan). They can fit in different boxes outside of standard action movies.
RokaSoka if you're going to be a movie snob at least try to understand comic book movie is not a genre its a source material which can provide different genres which is what makes them resilient. After all, CB based movies are here for the last 40 years and it seems they just started so im sry you don't like em but that doesn't mean they re done anytime soon...
+Rados Kovac It is a genre, just like sci-fi is a genre. Sci-fi can be a horror movie (Alien), a crime thriller (Blade Runner), an action comedy (Fifth Element), a war movie (Star Wars), a survival story (Martian), a love story (Her) or a surreal contemplation about the nature of man and the universe (2001: A Space Odyssey). Unfortunately, superhero movies are nowhere near as fluid and versatile. Aside from being tied to licensed IPs and adapted from an art-form dependent on unlimited serialization, the genre severely limits the main characters. At the end of the day, you'll always get two larger-than-life enemies punching each other in the face over some kind of threat to the public.
Hollywood doesn't have much choice but to either make dumb blockbusters or heavily downsize, because consistently making really good movies is an art that far too few in the industry seem to be capable of accomplishing. Meanwhile, technological change and changing assumptions in competing media have backed Hollywood into a corner. Consider that the game industry now dwarfs the movie industry with more than double the revenue (though the numbers aren't apples-to-apples), while stories like Game of Thrones would be practically impossible to tell in a movie format and are attracting ever larger budgets and audiences. These problems started in the early 90s and have gotten progressively more acute. At that time, a few television writers finally broke through the idea that American audiences were too stupid to follow television programming with long-term story arcs, creating shows like Buffy, X-Files, Twin Peaks, and Babylon 5, and television became a better medium for telling stories about complex plots and characterization than movies were. At about the same time, first-person shooter and 3rd person RPG games emerged as a superior medium for telling stories that were heavily dependent on visceral personal violence than traditional action movies were. The movie industry never faced competition like this before, and yet all corporations face enormous pressure to continuously grow their revenues so they'll only downsize if they have no other choice. While there is still a place for really brilliant stories about character like Logan, and for movies that heavily hinge on personal violence like John Wick, it seems to me that the bar has been raised to the point that Hollywood can't depend on churning out junk in those genres and expecting it to sell anymore - at least in America. Dumb giant blockbusters will continue to be made because they don't benefit from the sprawling storytelling of TV, and can't be rendered in realtime by game engines yet.
Jeffrey Fisher Look at all the amazing stories through fps and 3rd person games like Resident Evil, Halo, or Metal Gear Solid. When you had shows before the characters lacked a story and everyday it would be something new. The plot would begin and end in the same episode and the characters really had no ulterior motives like the Jefferson's, Full House, Simpson's, etc. When characters actually had stories that followed up it made you want to watch the next episode and they could add more characters or plots that were better than the last. This is why Michael Bay movies like Transformers aren't really perceived well. Movies like Fast and Furious also gained more commercial success when it developed that method too. Who's still gonna be interested in the same joke by Family Guy told already. Characters and actors get older, people change, people mature and go through life.
On a side note, that first person shit could never work for films. It just seems really cheesy for an older the shoulder or go pro camera style movie. It works for games because the person you play is still a character you see in the game and you actually interact with them. If call of duty was a film it would be a horrible franchise that over-stayed it's welcome
corruption in the industrie is also at point here, Watch any marvel movie today and many people will say it's ok or a 5/10 6/10 rating. But the superhero movies will now get a minium of 8+ because apparently people are easily pleased. Which will cause of course trouble in the future.
7:53 *Closer Look* - "they won't end RDJ's Iron man because he's a cash cow." *Avengers EndGame* - I'm about to end this man's whole carrier. *Me* *crying* - Love you 3000 Tony!
You say it like Avengers decided to kill of Tony because they wanted to promote good screenwriting when in reality the opposite was true. They did want to milk him until he wouldn't make them any more money but RDJ said he had enough and wanted to be killed off. As such they were forced to shoehorn in a ridiculous death scene for a well received character.
@@Frankovelli well the fact that RDJ had wanted to end his run as Iron Man was the main reason on why they wrote his end very carefully not just to end a character because they have to but also to finish the characters story arc. Tony Starks death was well writen and was made so for it to resonate with the audience and was a fitting end to his journy as a hero. Also no disrespect to The Closer Look but that was a statement that didn't age well but overall he has made a great video.
I just realized this video is five years old when I heard him speculate about the future of Tony Stark. Because now we actually don´t have a Tony Stark anymore and the Superhero Genre is truly at it´s absolute lowest point, and I find it sad that his speculations not only came as true as they did, but so incredibly fast too
@@chobochobus DC comics has plenty of stuff to work with. Great comic books and amazing animated movies... If the cinematographic universe failed, its because of Warner and every single person involved with the DCEU... I mean, who thought it was a good idea to make Superman be an emo? Or make Batman a murderer? Why make them fight each other without any real context right after the first movie? I listed 3 things and you can already see the universe is based on bad decisions. Its DC, its the people in charge of creating the universe that completely failed at doing it. Its simple. Disney made Marvel characters work... and Warner couldnt do the same with DC. It doesnt take a genius to realize it.
Nicolas S. not to forget that they actually have some good movies especially the first ones. The whole dark knight trilogy is gold, V for vendetta is amazing so is watchmen but I think DC is trying to analyse Marvel which makes them fail because they don’t have the same story’s. They compare Tony to Bruce and think that making him a rich guy who has some funny stuff to say makes to movie amazing.
@Edward HARRISON [13M3] Have you watched the Original Fantastic Four Movies? Secondly, that second thing probably can't happen, since Fox Owns the rights to X-Men. Wait, that fixed itself when Disney bought Fox, didn't it? So can it happen? I'm not an expert, but I would say 'Fuck, yes'!
Have westerns really died though? Sure, they come out less frequently, but they are still being made. Django Unchained, True Grit, Hateful Eight, A million ways to die in the west, The Magnificent Seven, The Revenant, No country for old men, The Ridiculous 6.
Most of those are good movies but back in the day they were a much bigger thing. A Western coming out back then was equivalent to a superhero movie coming out now, box office hits with tons of people going in to view them and everybody talking about them. Death of a genre doesn't mean that there are no more movies being made, it just means they're no longer a big thing. All of those Westerns that you mentioned are probably some of the only memorable Western movies I can remember coming out in the past few years. I can probably recall twice as many memorable superhero movies that came out these past few years.
Logan is still one of my favourite films...The soundtrack, the realism, the colours, the characters and dialogue... Its just enthrallingly brilliant and makes me so sad and happy every time I watch it
And it brilliantly acknowledge the events of some of the X-Men movies in powerful, ways, for example, the cover of the comics Logan looks at, you can see they are in a funeral, that was the funeral of Jean Grey. End the ending echoes the Wolverine: Immortal. is beautifull and brilliant at the same time.
Editar the thing is Disney had plenty of material to make movies out of with the old Dark Horse era comics but instead they decided to bring something back that no one really asked for. Lord knows there was a whole war between Jedi and Mandalorians that they disavowed immediately after they bought the franchise.
"Star Wars" The biggest load of crap to ever hit celluoid. Perhaps when America finally grows up we won't have sc-fi films just made for 5-yr-olds or loaded with too much pointless violence.
Sam Samoa what do you mean, Star Wars shaped multiple generations, my father as a kid learned from the lessons that were taught by the movies, and as he grew up so did the series that he loved, with new games and movies and shows, and he passed that love for such a vast, beautiful, sprawling universe to me, if you want adult focus read the books or comics, if you want an in between watch the original trilogy, rouge one or the clone wars, if you want a good laugh watch prequels because everyone knows that they are funny, they are horrible movies and we love them for that, watching a bad movie is better than anything that isn’t amazing, and finally you could watch the family friendly new trilogy or rebels. Star Wars is held dear to so many people, children, teens and adults alike because it is universal, anyone who thinks it only for children needs to watch rouge one or read the Thrawn book, because I would not want a five year old reading or watching that, all of the og trilogy is about family, the fight for what is right, and the growing up of a farm boy to a hero, the reason that so many people love this series is that if you remove the space battles and lightsabers you are left with a hero story that could be from an 18th century play, because it is basic at its core. I know I’m not going to be able to sway your opinion on the series that had shaped who I am through the teachings of a green puppet and a space smuggler with a animal sidekick because you don’t get it, but I hope you don’t keep talking down to the series and those who love it, because if I got really mad at you for saying these things you would probably say “oh it’s my opinion” Well loving Star Wars is my opinion, and I’ll fight to the end on this one
@@Centurion0419 "Well loving Star Wars is my opinion, and I’ll fight to the end on this one." You do that! It's your energy you're wasting! "through the teachings of a green puppet and a space smuggler with an animal sidekick" I prefer the teachings of Jesus. With those, I don't waste my energy on vacuus rubbish like Star Wars, I become Luke Skywalker, or what he represents. Luke is the third Gospel in the NT and essentially represents Lucifer, the first eye of God. Mine is open. Yours is shut, tightly. Enjoy your little children's tales. I hope I haven't ruined them for you.
Sam Samoa Sam Samoa Sam Samoa Sam Samoa Sam Samoa how is enjoying something a waste of time? If it brings me and so many others happiness and fulfillment it is somehow a waste of time? Do you really think preaching your little Children’s tales about a man who walked on water in the comments of a review of Logan is going to do anything? The bible if written today nobody would believe, because there is literally no proof of these godly events, if you show me water into wine or walking on water I’ll believe, but someone like yoda or Han is much more believable in today’s world, and old wise man with old teachings of a time long gone who wants to pass on his knowledge, that happens all the time with stories and teachings of wars and history in general, and his teachings stand in real life. “Do or do not, there is no try” “fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering” isn’t that sound like someone out of the bible? I don’t understand why you keep calling it childish when like I said before if you would pick up a piece of fiction that doesn’t have the blessing of a fake god around it then you would know that it’s not just for kids, the stories of soldiers losing friends and family fighting for their home. Of an evil empire and its firm grasp on all that live under it, you tell me honestly that the movie that opens the series is for children when it opens to a massacre of rebels and the literal choking to death of a good guy? Not everything is about your bible and it’s horrible ways, you don’t know how much fucking pain that thing has caused me, and believing that somehow you are more knowledgeable or mature than the amount of people that 1.6 billion dollars worth of tickets could pay for? Though most of your kind want me dead for existing I have a few Christian friends and none of them share your warped view of things, because they don’t need to prove to themselves that their beliefs are already around too much, but you have to go around berating people that like a series that grew up with my dad, has grown up with me, and I will eventually show to my children, because it teaches much better morals than hating gays and Star Wars, I’m going to stop talking because now I know that I’m not going to effect you or too set in your ways, I feel bad for you really, you were born into these beliefs right? I’m just happy now less and less Children’s the forced into an upbringing like that. If my eyes are shut tightly than I fear whatever you see, because I’m happy here dreaming away, ignoring those that hate and destroy for no reason, and I’d take a green puppet over a fake god who hates who I am any day, I hope you keep deepthroating that cross of yours, maybe you’ll choke on it
I thought if anything, super hero movies (or at the very least, marvel movies) have been getting better recently. Plus, Marvel has actually shown that they're willing to kill off characters.
We still don't know that for sure. They might pull a magical "Let's collect the reality stones and summon the dragon, and wish everyone back." It would undo everything that Infinity War did amazing.
Captain Blocky that was pretty minor considering he died in the same movie he was introduced in, especially considering the enormous cast of superheroes in the franchise. All the characters "killed" in infinity war will be back, except Loki (probably). They're all in the soul stone. There's really no suspense or real weight to any of their deaths. I think there probably will be a few, more permanent, deaths in the second infinity war movie, and I think, unlike the maker of this particular video, that Stark will be one of them. And if he doesnt die, he might just "walk off into the sunset". I remember hearing/reading something about RDJ being ready to finish his role of Iron Man.
Carter Johnson So is Chris Evans (I cry), they both renewed their contracts like 2 years ago for another 3 years... meaning after untitled avengers film comes out half the crew will be moving on
Wow, pretty spot on watching this almost 5 years later! I really loved watching all these superhero movies, but I can feel myself tiring of them now that I'm bombarded with movies, shows, etc. I haven't even watched most of the recent ones! It makes me wonder when it will all finally end, because I don't see an end in sight right now!
Has there been a genre that HAS ended? i still see westerns, musicals, family dramas, hell, even a silent film every once in a while (Mel Brooks). we even keep retelling some of the oldest stories we have, Beowulf, Heracles, etc. thousands of years later and the genre aint dead
By ended, I assume he means that they don't take up a lot of movie resources, particularly on the Holllywood side. Sure, you can always find a movie to watch from a small genre but how many are being made out of the whole? Basically, in terms of percentages, genres that don't constitute a significant portion of the whole.
I assume he's referring to a franchise. If he is, they're right. Logan was supposed to be the end of the xman franchise we grew up with...and it did just that. Superhero franchises, like many, just can't end. They're always trying to squeeze one more out of it. Trilogies become quadrilogies. Series turn out to be left deliberately open ended in hopes of more.
Bartist Clord By "ended", he means it stopped becoming mainstream. Westerns are BARELY even a thing anymore, besides the occasional action thingy. Such as Red Dead Redemption 2.
Such an amazing video essay! It was a pleasure to watch it And yeah... I hate to admit it, but (maybe not just with superhero movies, but a lot of things in general) seeing a sensible - even if sad - ending, is ultimately good. Better than watching something be dragged out just to avoid that sadness, and watching it fall into irrelevance or a state of unoriginality
Yeah, the gaming industry is also suffering from this exact same mistake, once legendary franchises are now hollow husks of their former selfs, constantly changing into something else so that the companies are able to get a little bit of profit
I first saw the Lord of the Rings series as a kid, and I remember on the edge of tears when the credits started rolling. Even as a kid, the end of a beautiful story like LOTR really affected me. I wanted to know what happened next. Now, I see. The end is the best part. It marks the grand finale of life and it marks a finish.
@Yeetus Defeetus RDJ is coming back. He's signed on for Black Widow. A Disney+ show will also have him playing Iron Man. There's some more people saying he might come back in AI form in the main MCU. So he wasn't wrong.
I’m watching this 6 years later and, wow this is amazing the super hero genra did this exactly what you said and it failed, becoming a second thought now.
7:49 “But such an event will never happen because Iron Man in a huge cash cow.” That sentiment did not age well. 😂 but this is a beautiful thing to have been wrong about because we did get that closure in Endgame.
In all honesty this is in my opinion your most beautiful video. The message was perfect, the movie was perfect and this then minute long video not only conveyd a really good lection, it also had the perfect pacing and genuinly made me feel. I was immerged by it like it was a really good movie itself
This video has aged so accurately that kina freaks me out. Marvek made this mistake, it didn't give a real end to the history, now there is no interest.
I see people commenting about how he's "eating his words" due to Stark indeed sacrificing himself in Endgame... But now with a few more years passing since that film, we're seeing that his words are ringing truer than ever. Iron Man is being replaced with Iron Heart. Steve Rogers is being replaced with Sam Wilson. These characters' arcs ended.... But they're still not being retired despite reaching their natural ends. Say what you will about Wilson vs Rogers or Riri vs Stark, but you can't deny that the replacements will *never* have the same impact or staying power as the originals. On a broader scale, we're also seeing superhero movies starting to *way* overstay their welcome and are becoming supremely formulaic... So yeah, point being, Stark may have indeed sacrificed himself in an impactful moment, and Rogers' arc may have wrapped up... But this guy's points not only still stand, but are being proven more and more with majority of superhero projects that have been released the past couple years, and will be released in the coming few.
Brandon He was more inclining towards "finality". The superhero genre doesn't have that because their characters are so beloved. Watchmen had it's finality, because it's an actual satire of the whole genre itself.

And what he got wrong abt iron man
Exactly my thoughts. Marvel will bleed these characters until there’s no soul left. Logan gave us the most respectful ending to Wolverine’s story he could’ve had.
Except t hat tiny detail at 7:55 lmao
“It’s time for our Immortal idols to die”. God damn that line is so powerful
Really too bad he didn't end the video directly after that line.
And now he is back
I think it probably helped Mangold's vision that Hugh Jackman - a man who personifies a particular superhero more than any actor since Christopher Reeve - was both ageing and willing to make one last hurrah.
It was a great way of ending Wolverine´s long, crazy life. One of the best super hero movies ever.
That prediction didn’t age well! Or did it...

The genre itself will and is becoming movies with the same plot in substance with better or worse execution. Different story to tales but feeling like we've watched it before.
But maybe there is hope; For an instance, the Trailer for the Joker movie seems small but meaningful, like if it was not a super hero movie but just a drama with some action. darthvader0219 hell, apocalypse wasn't any good
darthvader0219 they are presquels tho
Floyd Harper theres some good in it tho
i consider it the end of logans story not the xmen...lets be honest logan and charles and to a somewhat equal but still smaller degree magneto were the lynchpins of that entire franchise.

I honestly can't see another Wolverine other than Hugh Jackman
Alastair Vergara It’ll probably be a relatively unknown actor that they pluck out if they ever intend to have another Wolverine as a main character. Similar to how Hugh Jackman wasn’t overly-famous when he was first casted, or Tom Holland for a recent superhero equivalent
Wolverine isn't wolverine without Hugh Jackman
o please, wolverine existed far before hugh came along, this movie only signified the end of an actor's portrayal of him, which was vastly needed.

The Closer Look Great work mate!
I knew how this movie ended as I began watching it, but that didn't stop me from tearing up like a baby.
N3GAT0RY same 😥
That's the only reason so many people like it. Literally everything else besides the acting (and overall visuals) is sloppy and outright bad. Just toss a sob story in there with good actors and people will like it.
The movie as a whole was am amazing!
Toxihex I can't really agree, I found that the visuals and acting fitted the movie. It was quite enjoyable and the emotional impact it left, feels unique.
NΞGAT0RY There are no more guns in the valley
Logan is brilliant because it works as a stand alone movie independent of its X-men roots.
The references to the previous Wolverine and X-Men movies were a really nice touch tho, cementing the fact that he's gone through all the shit we've seen him go through in the movies, and this is all of that catching up to him.
"Don't be what they made you.. " -Logan
Cromwell Castaneda man that is truly thought-provoking. Such an incredible cinema experience that I am grateful to have experienced.
Logan's ending still gives me chills
Those chills are going to " keep coming and coming "

Well, time to take back your Iron Man statement!
Chris Holzmair That’s just a testament to marvel and the fact that they DO know what they are doing.

“Iron man is too expensive to kill off”
Now iron man gets killed because the actor is to expensive to keep
and replaced by a younger stand-in...that, 10 years down the line, will be replaced by a younger stand-in...that will be replaced by a younger stand-in.....see what I'm getting at?
I thought Robert was getting tired of playing Iron Man because he was starting to get typecast as him and didn't want Iron Man to be his singular defining role.
Holy shit I never realised how well The Wolverine (2013) foreshadowed Logan's death.
To be fair, she referred to him removing the bug attached to his heart and dieing momentarily. In the Logan version of events, the Wolverine didn't even happen.
TanTheMan Logan was set several years after the events of 'The Wolverine'.
Yeah like they didn't mean to "foreshadow" his death the way actually it did but it still absolutely mind fucked me
It's too bad The Wolverine wasn't nearly as good...
TanTheMan the wolverine did happen according to the film logan. The katana on the wall is the link
@@jtomos that's a bit harsh mate. they are only sharing their own opinion. not in English class.
Errr pretty sure Nolan did that with the Batman trilogy 10 years earlier.
Talk about mental masturbation. Logan isn't as intellectual nor as artistic as you believe mate. Moreso, if this is anywhere near your peak I'm afraid you're neither as intellectual nor as artistic as you believe mate.

@BHowardify If they do, I'll stop being a marvel fan
John Smith same here. They ended his legacy in such a great and heart touching way and if they brought him back it would ruin all of that and take away any real consequences for any further marvel movies
Actually he was to expensive to keep
But he's still right, Iron Man is still going to show up in future movies since Robert Downey Jr just got a new contract with Marvel for future movies - he's most likely going to be a hologram or resurrected. So he's not gone for good.
Take a moment to appreciate the mind blowing message this guy gave us and the beautiful scene at the end of this video. He amazed me with this revelation, for both the direction these stories should go and the deeper meaning of wolverine's final moments.
what you did there at the end made me curl up in a ball and cry.
Okay... That ending got me... DAMN IT I'M CRYING AGAIN
oh my god, me too. i came to the comments looking for someone talking about it. "You are holding your own heart in your hand" I can't...

I think it would be better if Cap sacrificed himself for Stark.
The way I saw it was that the moment would turn Stark too Cap's side, but I see your point.
I'm not crying, YOU'RE CRYING. Okay, yeah... I'm totally balling my eyes out.
One of the reasons I was so shocked and, honestly, offended, that Disney is making a Toy Story 4.
Same here...
Seriously?
...Come to think of it, that's nothing compared to Ice Age.
yeah except most people stopped caring about ice age after the first film. I just roll my eyes every few years when I see another ice age sequel being released.
What? Why? The 3rd one ended the franchise perfectly!
Its Pixar its going to be good no matter what
Watching Marvel's drop in quality (not counting many weak films in their first 3 phases) made me come back to this video. Boy, Logan still feels refreshing years later. It's the kind of movie you want to see to get more than just a spectacle. This and The Batman are a welcome addition to the superhero genre.
About superhero films perhaps overstaying their welcome, characters getting old. I think Marvel is trying to avoid precisely that by proclaiming Infinity War as the end of an era, with a new one to start afterwards
We’ll see how well it works
And it worked :)
@@Rael14 we will have to wait until Avengers 4 to see how well they stick the landing.
Infinity War was a monumentally incredible setup to the final chapter of the infinity saga.
rael How did it work? The new era has not even begun ❓😂
But that is a problem itself, its not only the characters that is overstaying, the genre itself, marvel has the template and they use it ON EVERY MOVIE, all the marvel movies are essentially the sane, structure wise at least, just like westerns once before, unfortunately I don't think this new genre will get a closure, Disney wants to buy everything and fuck it
Look at what they are doing with toy story, star wars, and many more to come, remakes and live adapt unecessarily being made for no single reason
‘Ironman is too expensive to kill off’
Endgame: *HOLD MY BEER*
What's funny is that he was becoming too expensive NOT to kill off. Negociating a new contract with him would have been impossible, the guy could have asked for anything.
Same with Scarlett, she's the best payed actress in Hollywood, you can't negotiate when one of the parties has that leverage.
Thor: Sure.
Lets be honest, they only killed him off cuz his contract was up
“If in a future marvel film Tony Stark were to sacrifice his life and die in order to save Steve Rogers especially after the events of civil war, that would be a monumentally powerful moment to end iron mans character arc. But sadly that will not happen because Iron Man is a cash cow and is simply too expensive to kill off.”
~Closer Look

Btw he wasn't wrong at all at the time
I mean his prediction was logical I get he made mistakes but give him a break
And in his defence, I think getting a new “cash cow” in black panther may have played a part in Marvel being ok with Iron Man’s death
Last 30 seconds .... damn man .. why ...
Because I like making people sad ;D
So yeah, basically DoFP caused the stone to be dropped and "change its course" with two universes.
woah. Yeah, even if it wasn't originally meant as a direct call back...that was deep AF dude...
Sorry to spoil, but according to RDJ's filmography, he will return in Avengers 4 after Infinity War.

Isn't infinity war part 2 the same avengers 4 movie, yeah they will die
dr jackal No. They confirm years ago that Infinity War will no longer be a 2 part movie
Andy Pham it will be two parts, the films release dates are only a year apart
James Ofomah-Parry Meh Logan feels more real
Dark knight rises was a great film, was it better than Dark knight ?
Hell no, but it was still emotional and had impact to the end of the trilogy, which is more than I can say about a lot of movie storylines
Yeah I believe Nolan didn't plan to make TDKR. The whole thing could've ended TDK.
Its funny to watch this video and look back, that Iron Man died now over 3 years ago, but still the general message and the path the superhero genre goes down didn't really change. Rather the movies found a way to go down this path even faster...

And change.
Too True :)
Lydia Exactly what I thought. Beautiful articulation.
"such an event WILL NOT HAPPEN."

He's still wrong lol.
Logan was such a good film. My friends think Captain America Civil War was better. I need new friends.
Yes you do.
Civil War was maybe the best Avengers film to date, but it wasn't a better film than Logan. Logan was absolutely brilliant from the action to the acting to the emotions.

Logan Waltz you are defective
I found Logan corny. It was to pushed in my opinion.
This movie is one of my absolute favorites, it’s such a beautifully crafted film. I grew up with hugh as wolverine, so to see such a beautiful end for a character I loved until I was only a year from becoming an adult, was fantastic closure & really touched me
ya boi I agree this is my favourite wolverine film and any film set in the x men universe.
"Iron man is too expensive to kill off"
We're really feeling that one now 😭
“As the animation quality increased, the written quality has decreased” with marvel movies it was even worse, the visual quality has decreased along with the written quality
Never in my life would I see a twerking She-Hulk. I'd rather watch that Fortnite Thanos twerking on loop.
The genre has been going on for more than 40 years, but it was never as crowded and commercialized as it is now.
Nicholas Levi Days of future past, civil war, winter solider, WW etc.... are at those films level

Came back after watching End Game. I think the writers watched this video before writing the script
Leonardo Hernández actually iron man was planned to die since Iron man 1
I felt so bad for that farmer family, they really just got dragged in and destroyed.
It echoes the words Logan said to X23, "in the real world, people die..."
7:59 no, that's highly likely to happen, because RDJ's contract's up, and there're tons of hints...
EPM 101 agreed
EPM 101 in fact, I'm betting Stark goes out saving Steve Rogers
VietnamD0820 Yeah, he was saying that, and I was thinking, yeah, probably, but then oh, no, of course they won't. Yes they will, that's what everything's been building towards.
Plus Tony Stark is basically the new Uncle Ben for Peter Parker and we all know how that ends.

3:18 That tune...when I was a kid I broke down crying my eyes out during the first X-Men movie when Rogue took away Wolverine's powers (i thought he died I guess. The end of this movie may or may not have resurfaced old feelings) while this track played
This is why that particular track always fills me with more sadness than any sad song I've ever heard.
I apologize for this irrelevant to the video comment, i love these video essays, just thought id share my thoughts
Whats the name of that tune ?
@@xmanmexRonin I believe it's called Logan Holds Rogue

And what do all of you people think will take their place? What do you want to take their place?
Movie snobs...
Also art is subjective. They'd not want to suffer a backlash that would whip them til they go bankrupt.
Jonathan it's not art, it's industry.
7:53 *Closer Look* - "they won't end RDJ's Iron man because he's a cash cow."
*Avengers EndGame* - I'm about to end this man's whole carrier.
@@hibikikuze1876 how is killing off a character while leaving hundreds of plot holes in the process "careful"
I just realized this video is five years old when I heard him speculate about the future of Tony Stark. Because now we actually don´t have a Tony Stark anymore and the Superhero Genre is truly at it´s absolute lowest point, and I find it sad that his speculations not only came as true as they did, but so incredibly fast too
"The death of the superhero genre"
Bruh DC hasnt even gotten halfway done
well dc hasnt even started it looks like because half the stuff they be making is shite
10:12 "You're holding your own heart in your hand"
Actually brought a tear to my eye.
Mad max fury road? Just a modern version of Stage Coach?
310 to Yuma, Lone Ranger, The Proposition, Back to the Future III
Not to mention the fact that Logan itself is really a western disguised as a superhero movie
Man, imagine Hollywood remaking The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in a couple of years...
Watching this in 2022 and seeing all the Disney+ shows and Phase 4 movies after Endgame…yeah. You’re not wrong.
This exact same thing is happening to Star Wars, it couldn't go out with a bang, people had to milk it.
Editar the thing is Disney had plenty of material to make movies out of with the old Dark Horse era comics but instead they decided to bring something back that no one really asked for. Lord knows there was a whole war between Jedi and Mandalorians that they disavowed immediately after they bought the franchise.
"Star Wars"
The biggest load of crap to ever hit celluoid.
@@Centurion0419
"Well loving Star Wars is my opinion, and I’ll fight to the end on this one."
You do that! It's your energy you're wasting!
"through the teachings of a green puppet and a space smuggler with an animal sidekick"
I prefer the teachings of Jesus.
They might pull a magical "Let's collect the reality stones and summon the dragon, and wish everyone back."
It would undo everything that Infinity War did amazing.
Carter Johnson So is Chris Evans (I cry), they both renewed their contracts like 2 years ago for another 3 years... meaning after untitled avengers film comes out half the crew will be moving on
its not about killing off characters its about giving the franchise a finale act without that its just pointless to even watch it
Captain Blocky but Loki like actually died and he's a fan favorite so I guess that means they are willing to kill off popular characters.
Genres are just like cultures, the original ones just change little by little, until it seems like a new genre is born
Series turn out to be left deliberately open ended in hopes of more.
u forgot ben-hur :)
Bartist Clord By "ended", he means it stopped becoming mainstream. Westerns are BARELY even a thing anymore, besides the occasional action thingy. Such as Red Dead Redemption 2.
Such an amazing video essay! It was a pleasure to watch it
And yeah...
What a great time for a video like this is to pop up in my recommendations with the recent stuff that has been going on with marvel’s phase 4.
Yeah. Since all the Marvel's doing to their legacy heroes are utter disrespect. Turning them into a running joke
This Man predicted endgame two years before 2019
But This man was not correct
We just have to take off the "no" in front of the sentence and done.
@Yeetus Defeetus RDJ is coming back. He's signed on for Black Widow. A Disney+ show will also have him playing Iron Man. There's some more people saying he might come back in AI form in the main MCU. So he wasn't wrong.
Was it a surprise that Iron Man died? I expected it, and actually I expected the rest of the OG Avengers to go as well.

7:49 “But such an event will never happen because Iron Man in a huge cash cow.” That sentiment did not age well. 😂 but this is a beautiful thing to have been wrong about because we did get that closure in Endgame.
He was right technically, was a really good choice and did make it a good movie
the ending of the vid, that connection is just--it got me bawling 😭😭😭
In all honesty this is in my opinion your most beautiful video. The message was perfect, the movie was perfect and this then minute long video not only conveyd a really good lection, it also had the perfect pacing and genuinly made me feel. I was immerged by it like it was a really good movie itself
Your narration was as beautiful as any movie or music I've heard my friend.
This video has aged so accurately that kina freaks me out. Marvek made this mistake, it didn't give a real end to the history, now there is no interest.
The end of the video got me like: "Oh sure, go ahead, poke a stick in my eye, I was needing a good cry!"
The ending to this video gave me chills throughout my body and tears in my eyes. Yikes what a perfect video for a perfect movie
This is why i liked Watchmen it was a death of superheroes in the story
brennan dayle watchmen was freaking incredible!
Lol yes but the video was more about ending of a genre and how to end it effectively not just deaths of people in a movie lol
Brandon He was more inclining towards "finality". The superhero genre doesn't have that because their characters are so beloved. Watchmen had it's finality, because it's an actual satire of the whole genre itself.
