    Laura was older and a lot more sexualized in the comics. Eliminating the suggestive elements and casting Dafne Keen was a bold move on Fox’s part, and it works beautifully.

    • @bigfatcarp93
      @bigfatcarp93 5 ปีที่แล้ว +385

      You’re referencing a comic that really wasn’t very good or important or added much to her character, which originated from the X-Men Evolution (where there was zero sexual subtext and the same odd “parental” bond was the focus). So they didn’t change her up, they just went back to the definitive roots. I do like the changed elements of her being Mexican and her surrogate mothers’ character. I don’t accept the comic’s take on this-as I don’t accept pretty much any chnage the comics tried to add- where her mother is a scientist forced to be impregnated as punishmen for showing empathy, they were trying for an edgy tale but the result is really just an example of fiction writer sexism, female exploitation used for cheap drama. The surrogate mother in this movie was a way more believable, respectable character.

    I know this is more than a year old but i've been watching the vids and had to comment, at 8:53 when x-24 murders xavier, there's one thing that for me personally is the best by far, and is that when logan sees x-24 going down the stairs and realizes that he probably killed xavier, the FIRST thing he says when he gets to him is "it wasn't me" as in desperation to let his only friend left know that he didn't betray him. • @astrangehero
      @astrangehero 7 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Hate to break it to you, but he was turned into a weapon in Canada too. Alkali Lake is in Canada.
      He left Canada and made it to the US where he fought in various wars (since he knew nothing else), hunted animals, and was just an all-around animal until he was found by the X-Men and realized he can use his talents for good.
      So the way I see it, your analogy still works but I think it's like this:
      Canada is where he was born, and made into an animal. He escaped, and made it to the United States wherein he stared into the abyss until he found a way out and became a X-Man.
      He died right on the border between the countries, as his last journey made him return to where he was born and created. Instead of returning to where he was made an animal like he was supposed to, he died letting those who were better than him (the mutant children) escape to his home, which he and the world has made into a sanctuary. An animal doesn't share their home unless they care for who they'll share with.
      He died on the border of both worlds, symbolizing his duality between his animalistic instincts and longing to be a normal man; with his daughter witnessing his last moments when he finally knew how it was to love and be truly human.
      A bit wordy, but I think it works.

    The comic books in Logan was really a genius idea. Logan believes they're all crap because most of it is made up but they have real meaning to the mutant kids. Those kids grew up in a lab and were treated like things. They learned about morality and heroes from those comics. Those comics gave the kids hope when they had none. So the lessons of those comics will carry very strongly with them.
    That's what Eden was about. It was a place that was in the comics and didn't exist in the real world. But the kids believed in the comics and went to that place and created Eden themselves. That shows how even though the X-Men are gone, their legacy will live on and they'll still inspire future generations to fight for their dreams.

      KingOfMadCows I thought it also very subtly separated Logan from the other X-men movies. "In the real world, people die." For me, that summed up what they had already told us: this movie is different. There are very real consequences that these characters have to deal with. To me, that grounded the movie more than make it silly.

    Laura is DEFINITELY a win in this movie. I don't usually like child actors, but Dafne Keen who played Laura truly impressed me with her strength and sass in Logan and I felt she was definitely on equal footing with Patrick and Hugh. She has all the badass-ness and power of Logan....and she can even kick HIS ass which was hilarious to watch....but at the same time, there was still a hint of a scared little girl who needed Logan to protect her. The only thing I wish I could have seen more of is Logan FINALLY having peace and forging a stronger relationship with Laura as his daughter.....for most of this film, I think he saw her as this annoying little kid that Xavier forced him into protecting, and it was only there at the end that I saw him really WANT to protect her. It killed me that I lost two of my favorite X-Men in this movie, but I actually do want to see if Laura's journey continues...maybe as the new Wolverine.

      Its interesting, the character shift that comes in this film. Throughout the original trilogy, Prof. X has always been a surrogate father figure to his students and his team....and Logan and Logan respects him, even if he doesn't always agree with him. In this movie, that role has reversed. Prof. X is more the fragile child, struggling to hold on and Logan has had to become the father figure/protector. Then when they meet Laura, he doesn't bond with her immediately, but as they go deeper into their journey....and especially after Charles is killed, Logan finds himself becoming a father to Laura as well....and in the end the vision was fulfilled....he finally found peace and died with his heart (his daughter) holding his hand.

    I went to the theatre to watch this film. It was packed and the crowd reacted...but they reacted...wrong. They desperately looked for something that made things happier than they really were. They searched for comic book hope instead of seeing real life torture. When Logan hit the truck with the shovel, the theatre bursted with laughter evwn though it was supposed to be a touching and unnerving moment. I went and saw the movie with my stepdad and he had a similar reaction. He kept coming up with these crazy fan theories that would work in a PG-13 Comic world, not in the R-rated real world. Logan is a film that exploits what we as an audience have grown accustomed to and exposed how it ACTUALLY is. You're not supposed to leave with hope or thoughts of the future. You're supposed to leave with the acceptance of the end and what led to that point. To take a page from Last Jedi, Logan didn't die in sorrow or in pain. He was finally at peace and got the sleep he always wanted. This movie is outstanding in everyway imaginable and will always be my favorite Superhero movie and is up there for my favorite movie of all time.

    It's so adorably funny to watch Patrick's acting as Charles the old man staring at little kid mess around with his wheelchair, just like a grandpa watching his grandkid.

  • @2wingo
    @2wingo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +342

    Even though everyone touts X-24 as Logan minus all of his humanity, the film very subtly calls that claim into question. He actually stands there and listens for a while when Charles speaks, as opposed to getting on with his mission immediately, and puts what looks like a comforting hand on his shoulder before he kills him. He doesn't attack Logan until Logan attacks him, in spite of being supposedly a being of pure berserker rage. Finally, his rage after Rice is killed seemed, to me at least, to be tinged with a hint of grief.

    • @stevenwoods8463
      @stevenwoods8463 7 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      2wingo It seemed to me that X-24 was imperfect and was easily distracted, such as the farmers arriving at the house. He was sent to extract Laura, but Charles's words caught his attention. Then the Munson son and mom attacked him, and then he was briefly infuriated by the wife's shotgun blast, and then stabbed Mr. Munson when he ran upstairs. It's like when he saw Logan, he almost saw him as the older weaker model and didn't even see him as a threat. And after Caliban blew up the truck and knocked Rice down, it looked like X-24 was walking over to see if he's alright and didn't even notice when Logan came up to attack him from the side.

    • @2nd3rd1st

      I remember after release barely any reviewer talked about her performance. But people have started to come around since then, maybe it took them repeated viewings to pick up on her nuances. I loved her immediately. For example her lying in the grass shackled when X-24 and Logan fight, screaming like a captured animal from fear/concern for Logan and rage. Seems like nothing but told me more about her than her smiling at the dinner table.

    • @Biomirth
      @Biomirth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I read somewhere that one of the things she loved most about the part was "getting to be a wild animal". You can tell she loved going all-out raging-bull in the film, which is so unusual for a child actor to get to do. They really capitalized on her strengths in directing it.

    • @2nd3rd1st
      @2nd3rd1st 7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Absolutely. But we don't know the full extent of her acting range yet. It's been rumored she could be in a solo X-23 movie, but I'm actually afraid that she could be one of those bad examples of young actors getting typecast after this or burned out from the early success/stress. Or she'll be simply dumped into kid roles in some pointless Hollywood B movies that don't get her any recognition.
      To be perfectly honest, somehow I hope this is her last time as the character, to give it more meaning. Finish school, learn a trade to have a fallback plan in case acting doesn't work out.

    • @rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168
      @rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be honest, I didn't really like that performance, but that could have been due to the writing for that character rather than the direction of the acting. But both aspects of her acting would have been fine if they didn't become a broken record over the running time.

    Logan summed up in one word: Pain. And I don't mean just physical pain, or pain in a bad way. I mean the subtle aches and pains of daily life that reminds us that we're alive, the dull throb of enduring self imposed loneliness. The sharp stinging pain of watching a loved one leave the nest and the pride you feel knowing they're going to do just fine without you, the slow grinding torment of feeling you've let down somebody you admire and look up to.
    I first saw Logan opening night in a theater near my work, and had to drive home for more than a half hour afterwards, and it was just brutal. It left me stunned and silent, and I could tell from the sniffles in the theater that I was not the only man crying when the credits rolled. This movie is a masterpiece, and it deserves at the very least nominations for best actor (Jackman), best supporting actor (Steward), best supporting actress (Keene) and best director. I wouldn't be surprised to see nominations for some of the technical awards either, the cinematography in this film is absolutely stunning (as shown by the fact it works so well in both color AND black & white)

      TheEman11910 well i do understand we are talking new mutants as a film and it is cable... But i more meant a new batch of mutants not the new mutants who i always consider as xforce. Nevermind that the characters in the new mutants which cable becomes leader of are nothing like the group of kids entering eden.
      That aside completely, i dont think its a given that cyclops is at the mansion, not if there is a schism. Spoiler alert, scott kills xavier in comics. I think having him publicly create/embellish stories is a perfect thing to drive him from the trusted circle of say wolvie, storm, beast and such. And it makes far too much sense for the eden nuggett to be real and he put coords in a story that could lead any future mutant to his side. Also its possible he didnt kill everyone at the mansion, just some, but obvious to all that logan is the one who can survive caring for xavier, and the schism could have been natural that way too. Either way was a feeling i had that scott would b in eden. Perfect way to segway to a completely new arch, lets not forget if he were behind it all, he would be old too, which is something we havnt seen before.
      Anything is possible at this point. Logan paved a way for trying different things.

If it is "alternative story", it just undermines the death of these characters and just takes away any emotion from it. Not every story has to end with beautiful happily ever after, that's not how real world works. This is end of these characters, you can't have an end in some alternative bullcrap.

      Exactly. Though I can respect other people's opinion that they enjoy it more as an "alternative story", I personaly can't. What's touching me the most is that in the future scene in Days of Future Past, we can see all the characters seem finally happy. Then, we jump like 10 or more years later, to see THIS. I don't even have to see how the other X-Men died. All the subtle informations are enough. And they're touching.

    • @soozidarling5629

      It's realistic in OUR universe yes, but I think of it as an alternative story/universe because a) Professor X (or Magneto) probably would have noticed the drop off of mutants and investigated sooner and b) Alternative timelines are established in-universe and c) this movie, while a masterpiece in hopelessness, doesn't match the rest of the universe (in my opinion).
      This isn't the true ending than any other "ending" to the story, as multiverse exists in X-Men and the greater Marvel universe.

      Writing could've been better. Caliban and Pierce got shafted by the script, and they were easily the two most interesting new characters. Pierce's role got replaced by Dr. Rice, and honestly Dr. Rice should've been written out of the script and his traits should've been given to Pierce (would've made him much more interesting), plus Pierce had a really lame death. It would've been way cooler if Pierce was a scientist that had been studying Wolverine for years, and created X-24 as a result of his research, knowing that nothing can kill Wolverine besides himself. I don't know where I would take Caliban, but before he was taken he was a fascinating character, and after he was taken he got thrown to the wayside, ultimately killing himself. Would've loved to see his dynamic with Logan, Xavier and X23, or maybe something else entirely. Didn't really like the kids at the end either, I feel like they could've been written out of the script as well.
      Ultimately the beginning of the film until they leave Las Vegas is exceptional, and after that, the rest of the film slowly started to go downhill. At least for me anyway.

    I'm going to be honest and admit to crying after watching Logan. As a 15 year old I've lived my entire life with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and after seeing this movie it finally set in that he would never play Wolverine again and seeing as the very first superhero movie I can remember was the first X-Men and Wolverine has been my favorite character ever since I wouldn't help but cry even if it's wierd or embarrassing watching Logan die was just too emotional for me.

Which is not to be callous or disregarding of the challenges they face, but most of them simply aren't believable. Maybe they have the latent talent, and maybe they grow up to be stellar actors, but very few people that age can act so convincingly. Kudos to her. Very convincing, very moving.

    I know the film claims he's more or less a mindless drone, but X-24 _does_ have one incredibly subtle "human" moment in the film, which is where he gets a kind of second wind against Logan after seeing the corpse of Zander Rice and roaring in what seems to be grief and anger. Coupled with Pierce urging X-24 to avenge Rice by killing Logan, there are some pretty clear implications that X-24 considered Rice his "father".
    I also noticed how just because X-24 got his brain blown out doesn't necessarily mean he's truly dead. Like Logan, his brain will heal...and I guess the big chunk of his skull missing would grow back in bone, giving him one pretty severe weak spot in an otherwise indestructible body.
    I dunno, make of that what you will.

      YayaFingerButters X-24 has a weaker healing factor because when he was rammed into the spikes his healing factor couldn't heal the wounds without the green serum so a major injury like this he probably won't be able to heal that so he is dead

    • @voxeil
      @voxeil 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      YayaFingerButters I believe he was shot with the adamantium bullet so he's definitely dead

    • @AfrO4E
      @AfrO4E 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think if the bullet goes cleanly through his skull then it would kill him, or at least it would seem like it since Wolverine seems to know that he would be able to kill himself with it and X-24's healing factor is some degree weaker than his healing factor in his prime. Wolverine's healing factor's strength has also varied greatly (I believed he completely healed from one drop of blood once), but in the x men movies I'd assume its at a point where there are very few realistic ways of killing him. I think its always been a thing that Wolverine's head/brain is his sort of weakness because he can be killed through decapitation (you'd obviously need a weapon made of adamantium to do that though). If the bullet destroyed parts of his brain, or almost completely destroyed his brain, I don't think it would heal, so he would die similar to any normal human being shot through the brain.

    • @YayaFeiLong
      @YayaFeiLong 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Right, the adamantium bullet would've killed Logan because his healing factor is failing. But X-24 is still in his prime, just like Logan was in _X-Men Origins._ If Logan could survive two or three adamantium bullets to the brain in that movie, X-24 can probably survive just one (granted with zero memories whatsoever).

    I'm so glad when I watched Logan, it was at home on my own. The movie stabbed me right in the childhood, but in a strangely satisfying way. This was many icons of mine, entire years of my life, amazing actors who inspired me, saying goodbye. And it wasn't happy. It was brutal, there was suffering, no one got what they wanted. But it was fitting, and artful. I remember laying my head on the desk at the credits and just mourning Logan.

    I have to say, All my life Wolverine was a big figure in my life, ever since I saw the first one in my early years and seeing some good movies and the fairly bad,
    But I do want to say I like all of them for different reasons, even origins.
    Watching this indestructible, unstoppable beastly man, kill Soldiers, Mutants, family and government was truly badass.
    Seeing him now as this grizzly, old dying man who is in his final days holding onto life waiting for his rightful death.
    Seeing this change made me feel upset and really bring the message that every hero dies,
    But a quote I really did pick up in another movie,
    You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain,
    And Logan literally saw the villain of himself kill his father figure and himself,
    I'm glad he held onto what was a little bit of happiness in a lifetime of pain to let it pay Of with his daughter,
    I will always see Wolverine aka Logan as my hero figure and know that he gave some of the best memories to ever give,

      The High Functioning Sociopath, You know, "Logan" seems absolutely unrealistic and quite easy on the viewer after you've seen such great movies as Belgian "Man Bites Dog" (1992) as just one example. If I liked "Logan" lesser then you it doesn't mean I have no sense of critical thinking. It just plain means I was not as impressed. Probably because I've seen a lot of much better and gripping movies in my lifetime. "Spider-Man 2" is no masterpiece either, but it's much fair and complex to what it does and it has a large amount of surprisingly uncomfortable scenes. Nothing was as uncomfortable or gripping in "Logan" for me.
