    I was 8 in 1977. I can clearly remember seeing Star Wars (I still think of it as that, rather than "A New Hope". 😁) at the cinema. It completely blew my mind!
    That opening shot of the star destroyer...I'd never seen anything like that!!
    I still haven't.

    JJ basically remade a New Hope twice. Once as Star Trek 2009 and again as 2015 Force Awakens. He is a one trick pony.

    I love comparisons like this. I find that remakes/reboots are some of the best ways to learn about storytelling because the differences are so fine. You notice stuff you otherwise wouldn’t. Like there are great things about Psycho (1960) that even the biggest fans won’t appreciate until they see the remake of it.
    I love this channel. As a screenwriter it helps a lot to get insight as to what could’ve been and to be able to compare it to what we got.

      @@Bulletsandblockbusters I’n not really interested in that route. I want to be a director too, so I plan on making a short (like 5-7 mins) horror movie to show that I’m at least capable of the basics of directing. I think it’s much easier to stand out with that then trying to compete against thousands of screenplays. I think of how that Lights Out movie was made from a TH-cam short. Also that Smile movie from a few months ago was largely greenlit off of two quick horror shorts the director made. I’m 100% confident in the few screenplays and ideas I have, I just want to direct them too so I’m going the long way round.

    Great content! I preferred the original opening to The Force Awakens, where Luke Skywalker's lightsaber floats aimlessly through space while still in the clutches of his perfectly preserved severed hand. As it enters Jakku's atmosphere, it picks up speed, effectively transforming itself into a sort of makeshift anvil torpedo which lands on Rey's head with the force of a thousand moons, killing her instantly.

    Even though I agree that the prequels did overuse CGI a bit, they still have *ton* of practical effects that people tend to overlook. The practical effects in the PT are just a lot more subtle than in the OT or ST.

    • @Bulletsandblockbusters
      @Bulletsandblockbusters  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      100% I think they look better in phantom menace though because that one was shot on film while the two other ones were shot on early HD cameras, which makes a lot of the vfx look “faker”

      @PARR-E ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Bulletsandblockbusters Fair enough. Plus, while all of the prequels use tons of miniatures and other practical effects, TPM used the most real sets and practical explosions of the PT to my knowledge. Also, and I'm pretty sure TPM is the SW movie with the most puppets in it. We all know about Yoda being a puppet in the theatrical version, but a couple of the podracers were puppets and at least one of the Naboo sea creatures is a puppet.

    You know. I believe Force Awakens was just a soft reboot/loose remake of A New Hope. It did bare a couple of similarities. Rey living on the desert planet Jakku was written to mirror the beginnings of Anakin and Luke Skywalker's journeys as they both lived on the desert world Tattooine and that's where their adventures began.

    There was a review by DX which comes to mind, you can’t replicate the same scenes / plot with different characters cause the context will be different.
    It’s unfortunate how messy the sequels are as films. Most of the force awakens problems happen in the 3rd act, feeling very similar to ep4 but in doing so hampers it’s own story. Arguably once star killer fired the issues started to become more pronounced but yeah, really unfortunate. They cared more about being like the originals than doing something with their own story and it suffered for it.

    Ok, I need to correct you, because this has long since been debunked. The Prequels didn't overuse CGI. They used more practical effects than CGI.
    Just because blue screen and green screen was used does not equal CGI. The scenes where they used blue and green screen were imposed over miniatures.
    Even The Originals used a lot of blue screen.
    You can easily find all the photos and videos of practical effects used. One of the guys from Mythbusters worked on the miniatures. In behind the scenes commentary on Revenge of the Sith the person head of the miniatures who works on Star Wars since ep4 talks about how actually The Prequels used more miniatures than the Originals.

The characters were very interesting, their dynamics were on point, etc. Everything looked like a great setup for a very exciting and different trilogy. The whole thing with the Starkiller Base annoyed me quite a lot - “Do we really need another Death Star raid?” - but while the ships were attacking, another story was developing in parallel, that had a promise to be very good, and I forgave this unnecessary plot point. Neither did I know that this would be the least annoying and unnecessary plot point in this whole trilogy…

    I would’ve preferred it if The Force Awakens was a 100% remake of A New Hope like some commenters call the film as it would’ve done done properly everything that A New Hope does properly. This is as opposed to the film we got, which tries to emulate A New Hope with slight yet significant changes that are ultimately for the worse, like the convoluted writing of starting at Jakku yet immediately flying back to Jakku and Han Solo not mentoring Rey in the way that Obi-Wan did before dying.

    Actually, ep 7 works perfectly as a remake of all original trilogy. Think about it. The first half we have the search of a droid in the desert who carries valuable information, wich is basically the first act of a new hope. Then the second half starts with the heroes going to find help to a planet where a friend of han solo runs a businness, pretty much like the second act if empire strikes back in bespin. And it ends with someone being taken as well (rey instead of frozen han). Then of course, we have the final showdown in a giant planer killer superweapon, where a tiny group of heroes infiltrates to shut down the shield generator, while the heroe faces the dark warrior who messes with her feelings. That pretty much summarizes the final act of return of the jedi. Cause rey, just like luke, defeats the dark warrior, the superweapon is destroyed and the good guys win. Seriously, jj is a genius for doing all of this unporpuse xd. And i'm actually glad, cause he left the road clear for rian to make something entirely new, wich he did

    3. R2 and BB8 are on a mission on a sandy planet where their counterparts have no idea about their real motives. (Finn is basically C3PO of TFA.)

In fact this video could be used in lecture as a compare contrast of two films to not say I'm biased and think the original is better. No you stack both films against each other and show this is what The Force Awakens lacks while A New Hope has it in spades. Truth be told if the Force Awakens was handed in as a final assignment it would probably be a C, because it technically has everything that you need but lacks a ton of things whereas A New Hope would be an A because it has everything and more.

Soon after Finn gets BB-8 to lead him to Luke himself, they both go to his home on that Island, Luke doesn't want them in his space, soon after Luke eventually trains Finn the ways of the force and becomes The Last Jedi. With Rey gone, all Finn has left are Poe, Leia and Chewbacca and of course Luke's ghost after he dies. Soon into the Rise of Skywalker, Kylo Ren turns to the light side, him and Finn turn to fight Palpatine's clone. Palpatine kills them both, but the Jedi force ghost then come out, Anakin Skywalker's ghost then kills Palpatine.
    The end.

    What if - and hear me out here - Star Wars was always a bit shit and never made much sense? And I don't say that to be condescending - I found it genuinely liberating when I came to the realisation that "oh, even the original trilogy was pretty crap, storytelling-wise, and I should really stop expecting these movies to be good."

      I think the first two are solid, then Jedi feels a little less than before the prequels drive off a cliff. So ya, I hear you. I generally think it’s ridiculous considering we really only got two solid movies that have been holding up this IP ever since.

    Just getting more angry with each video about how disappointing and uncreative the sequels were. The prequels were awful, but I came to that conclusion on my own. I never knew how to think about the Sequels, except that I didn’t feel much connection to them.

    I agree Star Wars The Force Awakens was a cheap imitation of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and the political situation in the galaxy didn’t even make any sense. I’m writing a Star Wars story and it deals with the light side and the dark side. The Star Wars story that I’m writing about is influenced my own life including real life events and the movies and tv shows that I loved and watched when I was growing up and when I was an adult. When you’re telling a story you’re telling a story using the tools. You don’t use the tools to tell a story. George Lucas.

    It is, and not a very good one. Each scene they recreate is just a shallow reflection of what came in the original without bothering to earn the plot point or exposition. It makes no sense that the First Order would be able to build Starkiller Base in secret, it makes no sense for Rei to think Luke is just a myth, it makes no sense for Luke to just run away after one student turned evil (his reasoning in the Last Jedi doesn't count, that wasn't written yet). JJ is one of the worst directors working in hollywood today. He's not even interesting when he's bad like Zack Snyder is, he's just bland and shallow.

    Yes, yes it is. Give me the massively controversial but at least legitimately new & exciting Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi over this bland, reductive crap any day of the week. 🤷 At least TLJ made me actually feel something. J.J. is always at his absolute WORST when working with pre-existing IP ala Star Wars or Star Trek.
