    For anyone trying this on a tofu60 or any 60 mount board (which has two standoffs against the frame of the case) You can slide the springs on the cut out of your plate to get them fixed in place when mounting, the results on my tofu60 were mind blowing, I got rid of the case foam and added frog tape below the pcb, the sound profile and flex are on a whole new level, even the spacebar is deep and thocky now. To be fair I did switch to gateron black ink v2 at the same time.

    While everyone else is on the hunt for the latest and greatest keyboard. This man is out here evolving the Tofu over and over into the latest and greatest keyboard.
    I o-ring mounted my NK-65 based on his video a while back and it did not disappoint. But it didn't really stack up to a true bouncy gasket mount. Might pick up a Tofu to try this out cause it looks even bouncier than my Sangeo-60.

    • @user-kz9rz8ui1c
      @user-kz9rz8ui1c 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Instead of the tofu, you might want to look into a psd60 case. I believe it is extremely similar in terms of case design and build quality. It is quite a bit cheaper as well.

    I just made the Keybored mod on my Tofu65 and now I love typing on it. With the screws you can tune how much bounce you want. Just a note for those who want to do it with an acrylic case, you don't need the tape, it will be too tight for the pcb to move. The size recommended for the springs is a tad small but you can still put them on the standoffs (since there is a sratching sound I lube them with 105g0). Also I made a silicone dampener pad instead of putting foam. Thanks Keybored for this excellent mod!!

    • @Keybored

    Great job as always. My first board is tofu65 inspired by your original tofu mod video. I had thought about adding springs but didn't know how to secure the PCB. I even thought of possibly buying longer screws so the entire pcb can slide up and down along the screw,silicone coat the middle portion of the screw, lube over, but never got to buy the screws.
    Your lock-tite method is nice and less likely to damage the pcb. Will definitely give this a try.
    (My tofu65 is ink blue, midnight keycaps (similar to yours)from akko, I used selfcut poron foam at bottom and pe foam+poron foam between pcb and plate, switch is sunflower. As you can see everything...inspired buy your videos. Thank you!)

    This is why this was the first keyboard channel i subscribed to. You really are the most creative when it comes to modding keyboards in a feasible way. I was wondering though... when it springs back up, wont the pcb hit the heads of the screws? Would you want to add o rings to only the head side of the screws to avoid that and make it more isolated from both sides?

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for that! I appreciate it! I actually had a similar worry so I thought of putting a o ring or washer. But tried it out without and didn't have the recoil I initially thought! You can force it, but during normal operation, it's not as violent as it may seem :)

    • @muckeyn
      @muckeyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This happened on a board I tried this on (not a tofu) where the screws mount onto the plate. You can hear a slight banging on the spring back during faster typing from the plate hitting the screw head. Adding an o-ring between fixed this, although I had to use a longer screw to compensate for the o-ring and leave enough room for spring movement.

    I tried to do something similar with my tofu, but it was kinda in between this and an o ring mount. I basically layered a bunch of foam and then stacked a few big o rings (the ones meant for keycaps) on top of the foam and around the stand offs to create something akin to the a spring made of rubber. It actually works alright, but your method is way cleaner and more elegant, so I need to try it out

    So I ran into some issues while doing this mod. After a day, I noticed that my tofu65 was registering some phantom keypresses and the RGB was acting weird in some positions. I think the springs that I ended up getting were conducting electricity or something and causing issues? While I was troubleshooting the cause of the phantom keypresses and RGB issues, I tried pushing down on the plate with the springs mounted and VIA was registering some keypresses. After realizing that it could be the springs, I put some masking tape where the springs made contact with the PCB and the issues went away completely.

    What happens when u disassemble it after, will re-screwing cause the thread locker to be ruined or will it be as if it was part of the thread and last even after several disassembly?

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup threadlocker is a once used and reapply deal. But blue threadlocker is pretty easy to work with

  • @muckeyn
    @muckeyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ingenious! Don’t have a tofu but tried this on one of my aluminum keyboards. The bounce is interesting although the dampening effect seems subtle for a light typist like me. It seemed to take a bit off the low tone on my black inks. They sound poppier and the spacebar is less thocky/thunky which was nice but sometimes drowned out the sound of everything else. Will have to try this for a couple days and go back to see if my fingers feel a difference.

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      :) It's a fun mod and great thing is that it's reversible if you decide you want to try something else :)

    • @muckeyn
      @muckeyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Keybored been playing with it and dialed in the amount of springiness by tightening the screws. The sound can also vary pretty significantly depending on how you set it. I tried it without springs and the keyboard now felt a bit harsh (never did before). This is really versatile compared to the o-ring or gummy mods.
      I’d recommend other people to try it at different amounts of springiness to dial in the bounce/flex and sound before adding threadlocker.

    Why is it specifically mentioned that switch springs wont work for this project? I have the perfect lookin and feeling gold switch springs that i used in basically the same concept/design/mod for a split keyboard that i love having/using.

  • @RiversChungus
    @RiversChungus ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd love to see this on other prebuilts you've used tinkered around with, I have a Halo96, so much about it is exactly what I'd want, but if something like this could smooth the typing feel just a bit, it would be perfect. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like anybody has posted about this mod on anything else.

    I swear o remember someone doing this over a decade ago on the geekhack forums. O always thought someone would adapt ot to a tunable coilovers like certain car suspension. Take a few keys off and turn a dial to have a firmer or softer feel.
    You should have beem able to use some nylon nuts and an appropriate length screw to avoid the glue for this low budget approach.

  • @miladesn

    well this wont work for 60 since the side mounting points are stuck to the side walls, cant place springs on those. any ideas?

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true! I initially wanted to do this with the 60 but that's what I noticed so I decided to do it to the 65 instead. Only thing I could think of was to file the stand-off... but that would be so difficult also

    • @lordpegasus440
      @lordpegasus440 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can glue the Springs on the Center of standoffs, but that process is hard to reverse.

  • @ian1381
    @ian1381 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very innovative! I wonder If I can implement this on a Tofu60...

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically it would be the same concept. However, the issue with the TOFU60 is that the side stand-offs are not a cylinder, rather it's like built into the side of the case :(

  • @yuzhe7540
    @yuzhe7540 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Will the springs used have the same issues as stock switch springs where they ping a lot?

    • @muckeyn
      @muckeyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lube them 🙃. I suspect that the travel is so low and there’s enough weight on them that they aren’t bouncing around like in a switch.

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      nope! No ping from these at all!

    Incredible work as always. I'm wondering: what are the necessary conditions for this to be applicable to a given board?

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would just require it to be tray mount keyboard with cylindrical stand-offs!
