Fray is a master at communicating the essence of Bach. Simple yet magnificent, difficult yet simple. Clarity alongside every little contrapuntal nuance. One of my favourite pianists.

Fray has an insight into Bach and the incredible talent to translate those subtleties and strengths like no other Bach performer before.
His understanding of the dichotomy of Bach's remarkable & austere form & structure along with the crazy jubilation and human recklessness is so empathetically expressed.
    Thank you David!

"I don't think a greater genius has walked the earth. Of the 3 great composers Mozart tells us what it's like to be human, Beethoven tells us what it's like to be Beethoven and Bach tells us what it's like to be the *Universe."* - Douglas Adams

He played it so well, the Allemande and the Sarabande sounded like such sweet and tender prayers to God, why not? Bach had such flame of faith and Fray delivered that prayer to God through our hearts; right through it. Thank you so much

David Fray is the one person alive today that knows the most Bach in the entire planet. Astonishing how he understands the music at such a deep level and is able to get his insight through to the listener.

Absolutely the best interpreter of Bach’s ideas, romanticism and sensuality. Bach’s humanity has his representative!!. David Fray’s knowledge of musical history and his approach to sound will give the world magnificent interpretations for many years to come!!

Landowska once said that we should not be intimidated by Bach and that we should instead learn to embrace his humanity and his piety. I think Fray has succeeded in doing so and more.

I have never loved the piano more after hearing this beautiful pianoist. He plays it in a way that I have never heard before. It's indescribably superbly crafted, expressed with clarity and nuances I never knew the piano had. Thankyou Your gift is exquisite and I can't wait to buy your CD. Fascinating to watch too. 🤗

Beautiful! He's a classical pianist who comes after Gould, so he benefits from what Gould recorded and Gouldian wisdom. Fray pays tribute to Gould in this fresh youthful interpretation of well-known Bach works.

@@thelazyscholar2037 I understand want you are saying. Of course Gould is THE best pianist and the authority on Bach and no one can come close to the way he played Bach, it was phenomenal! But I am nicely surprised by Fray, I find he is very good and I enjoy listening to him also. Have a good day! :)

I sense that Gould must have had a strong influence on the exceptionally gifted David Fray. Where he significantly differs from Gould however is through the ravishing cantabile tone he so naturally produces.
One of the few contemporary young pianists who engages me from first note to last.

Bravo David Fray.

    Partita 2
    0:30 Sinfonia I
    5:48 Saraband IV
    10:05 Capriccio VI
Fray's commentary overlays the beginning of all three movements. For IV and VI the comments are restricted to the first section, which is then repeated (as the score demands). Fray also repeats the second section (as the score demands). The repeats are not ornamented (Nor are Argerich's; compare to Anderszewski's repeats in IV (TH-cam has Partita 2 for both).)

    • @johncerella2127
      @johncerella2127 7 ปีที่แล้ว

-- so perhaps the video editor felt nothing was lost by the overlays in IV and VI. Who was it (some harpsichordist) that quipped that you might as well hit the re-run button on your tape recorder if Bach's repeats are not varied!

As played in this video, this interpretation far far far superior to the one I heard last night at the Wiener Konzerthaus. If you see this comment, Mr. Fray, please play this piece more like this and less like last night (prestissssssssimo- where, continually accelerating, it sounded like you were going to sprout a rocket out of your rear end and blast through the ceiling)! However, the 6th partita was wonderfully played...and anything at slow tempo (including this piece) outstanding...

Surely! The Romantic period has not the monopoly of the expressiveness, but in the Baroque there was a completely different concept of what expressiveness is: here we doesn' t find the ardour of Bach, the baroque grandeur, or the intense spirituality, but only cold digital abilities.
    Expressiveness is another thing.
