DPS6 Clutch Actuator Motor Replacement 2012-2018 Ford Focus & Fiesta With DPS6

  • In this video I go over the procedure for replacing a clutch actuator motor on a Ford DPS6 transmission. The information shared in this video can also be used for Ford Fiestas that are equipped with the DPS6 transmission as well, (process for getting to the actuators on the Fiesta varies from the Focus and is not gone over in this video.).
The DPS6 transmission is equipped with two clutch actuator motors, A & B. Clutch actuator motor A can be found on top of the transmission just to the left of the battery box and rearward of the air inlet tube going to the throttle body. Clutch actuator motor B can be found just underneath the transmission rearward of the radiator. Once the splash shield is removed the actuator is easily located.
Note: Please verify torque specifications in your repair manual. Also, if you are working on a Ford Fiesta the procedure, as far as getting to the actuator motor, varies a bit from the Focus. Also, the model year range that this information is applicable to for the Fiesta may be slightly different from the Focus. Verify information is applicable to your vehicle by doing your own research.
Warning: Vehicle should be off and in park with the parking brake applied before beginning repair to prevent vehicle rolling forward or backwards. If clutch actuator motor B is to be replaced then the vehicle will need to be lifted. Please refer to your owners manual and repair manual for information on how to do this properly and safely. Instructions on how to properly lift and support your vehicle not shared in this video.
Here is a link to the play list for the 2012-2018 Ford Focus 2.0L equipped with DPS6 transmission:

So, I've already had these things replace, and a new clutch pack installed at the beginning of this year. Because it was making a grinding sound. Like it wasn't fully engaging the clutch. Just had it back in the shop to replace one of the axles. Seems to be making this noise again after the axle was installed. Is it the actuator that makes the noise if your familiar with this, or is it not fully engaging the clutch and the grinding noise is more of a serious problem?

Logically IF the clutch is bad then a motor replacement probably will be of little help if any at all. The best thing you can do is get a second opinion from another outfit. Actuators don't actually store data. So no on the reprogramming. "Usually" no special procedure is needed after replacement. But, depending on individual circumstances a TCM adaptive learn may be needed.

I have a 2018 Focus 140,000 miles a few months ago I got in it on morning and it wouldn't go in reverse it also needed a battery replaced the battery drove to my mechanic he put it on the computer and threw a code for clutch B stuck replaced the actuator had the code wiped out all was fine. I do Door Dash delivery I was omw to deliver some food and noticed it was shifting hard into one gear and I didnt seem to have 1st gear but after I got above 40 everything was fine. I made my delivery got in the car and it wouldn't start. I shifter it down to neutral and back to park and it started the check engine light came I went straight to Auto zone they check the code and it was clutch A stuck engaged. I got the clutch A actuator my son replaced this morning the check engine light was still I drove it to O'Reilly's to get them to wipe it out and it was still not right while we were standing there the car was off the code was wiped out and the car was making a clicking noise it finally stopped it seems to be a little better but to me its still shifting a little rough

It's possible that the clutch actuators, clutch forks, aren't moving freely. Maybe a good idea to have a tech look at it again.

My son was the one that replaced the actuator he noticed it had been welded he figures it's a rebuild which I got from ford I know the first I replaced a few months ago was almost $300 and this one was $149. I know they come down in price but didnt expect it to be that low I watched another video and the guy was moving the clutch forks and spraying them with WD40 . I drove a short distance to get the code wiped and had a warning come on that the transmission was hot and to turn off the car for 5 min after that it was fine except it still shifts hard

I'm not referring to the actuator motors but the actuators. Your problem may be inside the bell housing.

You can make the actuator tool, out of the old actuator

I’m sure you can. But, the tool is super cheap now. I just bought one on Amazon. I think it was less than $20. I didn’t buy one for years cause they used to run over $80.

Great video brother, I have an issue with my 2012 ford focus SE. I got a P0705 code I assume is the Neutral Safety Switch next to the Actuator A but my back up lights work and I cannot start my car in anything except Park and Neutral which is correct. I assume the sensor is bad and sending a bad signal to the TCM. I recently had the TCM replaced with the new software due to the shifting issue but did not fix the problem. Can I change out the switch in park or does it matter and do I need a gasket to replace. Any help would be a tremendous help. Thank you for posting your videos they are very helpful keep up the good work.

Never heard of a P0705 setting in a 2012 focus with a dps6. You sure that's your code?

I rolled motors A and B and sprayed brake cleaner inside and a little wd40 cycled the forks in and out with the torx and cleared the code. It's now shifting great no issues.

Does the car need to be throwing a code for these to be bad? I have a 2012 focus titanium with 4/12 build date. Shuddering @ takeoff and during hard acceleration, and slipping during shift. I'm trying to go down every avenue before I have it replaced.

TCM is warranty for 10 years 100mile . Ford told me clutch is 7 years 100k. My friends shudder in first like it's slipping. I will help my friend change these. See what happens. Car has 12k miles. 2014 model.

Nah, I've had issues like that with no codes. Tried Cleaning via Actuator Ports, even drilled my own cleaning ports, but it was too late, forks failed and had to drop the transmission to take off the folks and replace them because they eventually failed.
