Hi JR. I think a couple of months ago when you first brought this Focus to the channel and talked about transmission failure, i posted a message about TCM failure in this units. I'm telling you this because i work in a transmission repair workshop here in Spain and in our experience with this DPS6, you don't actually need to replace the TCM....you could even crack it open and fix it first, to prove it is the actual issue (it won't last that much, but it's a good test) ... eventually it will fail again, and you might end up changing it. As a matter of fact, even while I'm writing this, you must be editing the video where you are changing it 😂. But for what it worth, i share my experience with you nad the others. First of all, clutch installation was all good. You did it just perfect. Don't worry.
Second, changing actuator motors was the right move to discard some actuator failure. Last, TCM can be fixed, it's pretty hard to crack it open nicely, but once you do it, failure is in connection between internal spades and main board. They aren't welded, they are just a couple of spades that connect by pressure and eventually loose that pressure and fail. If you resolder every actuator connection in your main board it will 99% fix the problem. There are many YT videos about it. I Hope you could give it a try, it will make nice content to this Focus. Nice videos like always, keep it safe!

You did this for clicks and btw, I am not criticizing you broadly for your decision because even though you are doing this for clicks, you are shining a light on how even large car companies like Ford overreach and release a 'cheap' trans for 'marketing' benefit, purporting it to be something it isn't. You work on cars, I design them and have worked for FordMotorCo in their engineering department. A last note, you likely know nothing about. There are no secrets in design and engineering. Engineers who create cars know where the skeletons are buried. Development i.e. design validation testing doesn't lie. They know if they fail and when including destruction testing. They are given an assignment by their management aka a cost target and a time line. They know this trans is a POS and many outsiders including those in the comments who have worked on many of these, know as well.

To be honest, the auto manufacturers brought this on themselves, they won’t pay out a proper amount of money for labor on warranty jobs. Techs get tired of getting ripped off and leave to go work at an independent shop leaving only technicians that aren’t good enough to work at an independent shop or techs that have been at the same dealership for 20 or 30 years that don’t give a shit anymore

Not sure about your area but none of the Ford stores in my area (all 7) pay their techs for warranty diag time. Which is why my in-warranty Mustang sits for 2-3 months at the dealer waiting on warranty work (without a loaner) while my sister in law's out of warranty exploder is in and out same day for most jobs.

@@v745ti I just had my car into a dealer 3 days ago, hoping for a diagnosis of a bad TCM, which is under warranty still, and not the clutch, which isn't under warranty anymore. I paid about $200 for a diagnosis labor fee to be told it was a bad clutch and will be $4,200 to repair. If it was a warrantied repair that needed to be done, they said the $200 diagnosis fee would have been waived. I am not getting it taken care of right away because I found that ridiculous, but now after watching this video and realizing there is a chance they just flat out lied to my face, I am more pissed off than I was 3 days ago. 😡

Just a heads up: if you would be replacing the TCM search for the revisions 105 or 106. Those typically have all the issues sorted out. Revisions 100-104 will eventually go bad. The revision number is the last three digits of the part number.

Will be worth pulling the TCM then and inspecting the PCB on a bench under and magnifier. I do a lot of electronic restoration work for Saabs, and the biggest thing is cracked solder joints from many heat cycles. Particularly in the area of the large MOSFETS which drive things. Get a Flux-Pen and some nice Rosin Solder and just reflow anything that looks bad. Typically the solder joint will look a dull grey rather than shiny silver, you should see tiny grey circular lines in the solder joint indicating a crack.

I diagnosed it a bad catalytic converter, fixed it, and everything was good. Point is, there are some really bad techs and some really shady dealers.

I spent most of my life in the automotive repair business and I think you are really good at diagnosing and repairing all makes and models. I would NOT respond to the critics of your work. I got lucky on my 2012 Focus Titanium. My TCM failed and left me on a highway on-ramp for half an hour. Luckily a few months before that ford had sent me a letter saying they will replace the TCM for free. Ford told me the TCM is highly back ordered but luckily my neighborhood stealership had 2 on the shelf. After I got it back I put it into sport mode and drove it like a rental car. Since then I have had no issues. Also you can fill the trans from the vent port on the top you just need a long funnel.

Love the fact that you have called out not only Ford but the dealer also. I wonder what they would've done if they did replace the the clutch assembly as you did and still had the TCM problem. How many customers have they ripped off along the way too. It's typical really. I'd be interested to know if the dealership (or should that be Stealership) reaches out to you to fix this. Like they should have the first time around. As a foot note they should also pay you for the clutch you put in.

You would be better off buying a Dorman reman TCM. There is 2 circuit boards in the TCM that are connected to each other with pins. The pins are not soldered on the factory TCM. The pins are a failure point. Dorman solders them. Also, they are very difficult to open. There is a large capacitor that is glued to both halves of the case on the inside.

I watched all the episodes of the Focus trans and was curious about the tcm. I found a 2 year old vid by another youtuber. At that time there were 44,000 tcms on back order and he went to a junk yard and paid $40 for one. Since they fail so often he was taking a chance but with $40. He then had to go to a dealer and get a reprogram for $125 that was his exp and it worked. So junkyard and reprogram. If I had the extra bucks and gas in the street I'd get a generac for the power outages. Big deal here in the Northeast with the wind snow and ice. Watchjr is always the first vid of the morning. I had a similar problem with my Honda CRV. The SRS module failed so I took it to the dealership after having it initially diagnosed by a local garage. The dealership told me they would have to do another test even though I presented them with the original Bosch test data with the error codes. They then kept the car for nearly a week, failed to call me when they had finished and when I turned back up had the cheek charge me €150 for the identical report. Then they told me they couldn’t repair the module as Honda had stopped making them.
After much hunting around I found a local auto electrician who obtained a used module and then programmed it to the car; the car need a vehicle test and with warning lights on the dash it would have failed. I then sent the original module to a company who reset it for less than €100.
Some basic research told me that Honda stopped making the part some years ago. Dealerships that I contacted here and France and the U.K. told me they had given up on these modules and were refusing to touch this problem.
My 2008 CRV has just 145000 miles on the clock. It’s serviced twice a year as it’s diesel and drives wonderfully. I love the car and it’s a great workhorse.
It’s all about gouging money. I was going to purchase a new CRV but they are now made in China. I bought something else instead.

I’ve got to admit that I watched this video series because I have a 2013 Focus (trouble free at the moment) that my son drives. The clutch replacement video was good, and I don’t see anything to fault you on with the actual installation. The only issue I’d have is blindly accepting the diagnosis by the dealership as being accurate. Even the swapping of the actuators was done as a last resort, after the clutch was replaced and failed to resolve the issue. Never trust the dealership, good diagnosticians are few and far between. I do hope that the dealership ends up doing the right thing here and I’ll be looking forward to hearing the outcome.

My guess is that they will say it’s the clutch assembly so they can replace that too (since most ppl don’t have the ability or knowledge to do it theirselves) and when they get in there and realize it’s not the clutch (knowingly or unknowingly) they can have the TCM replaced and get paid for that as well. Basically where it takes all of the responsibility for a misdiagnosis off the tech/dealer. If the clutch is bad, the customer pays for it, if the TCM is bad, either the customer would never know or they could double dip, and still get paid for both without coming out of pocket.
