    Great video. One minor edit--don't use anti-seize with NGK spark plugs. From the manufacturer:
    "NGK spark plugs feature what is known as trivalent plating. This silver- or chrome-colored finish on the threads is designed to provide corrosion resistance against moisture and chemicals. The coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs are installed at the factory dry, without the use of anti-seize. NGK tech support has received a number of tech calls from installers who have over-tightened spark plugs because of the use of anti-seize. Anti-seize compound can act as a lubricant altering torque values up to 20 percent, increasing the risk of spark plug thread breakage."

    Excellent tutorial, thank you!
    In Europe the service of the Tracer 900 is every 10k km (7,352 miles), the spark plugs have to be replaced after 15k miles, according to the user manual.

    Extremely helpful, thank you! There are a couple similar videos out there about this, but I definitely thought yours was the best.

    Thanks for posting this great video, helped me a lot today checking my plugs for the first time. One tip I can add that makes removal of the Ignition Coils easier is to gently pry the edge of the rubber cap up at one point with a small screw driver and spray some silicone lubricant in with an aerosol with a tube extension in the nozzle. Then gently rotate the Coil back and forth a few times and it will pop out more easily with some upward force. Replace the Coils with a thin coat of silicone grease on the sealing area.

    Hello Science Biker. I really appreciate your videos. I recently bought a 2016 fj09 and I've been having more issues than expected. Hopefully with the help of this video I will be able to ride it again soon. Thank you again!!!

    Thanks for the video! I am about to change mine and this video is already very useful. One piece of information that I found out while shopping for anti-seize, these NGK spark plugs already have a plating on them and anti-seize is not recommended! They specify that the plugs should be installed dry.

    doing this tomorrow. thanks for making the video, i was going to try to do it from the front by taking the rad off like i did on my r6, clearly wouldn't work on the fj.

    Good video as always. I'll most likely do my 4000 mile maintenance a little early, while it's still nice and cool in the garage.

    Great video! Great details! I just paid to have this done on my FJ. Maybe I'll tackle this on my own next time. The throttle body sync I'm a little apprehensive about doing.

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Don't sell yourself short on doing the TBS if you have the desire. If you can change the spark plugs, you should be able to do the TBS as well provided you have the necessary vacuum gauge tool.

    Very helpful. Would be even more helpful , when some scenes where brighter. But i guess it is extremly difficult to make a vidio under those conditions, I will put iridium spark's in cause i do not wont to do this work again. 😂

    Absolutely great - thanks very much for going to all this trouble to help others! If the gap had been too large, how would you have reduced it?

    • @sciencebiker9519
      @sciencebiker9519  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends why it was too large. If the plug was eroded from wear I would buy a new plug. If it was just set too large at the factory i would use the gapping tool to close the gap.

    Thanks for this video,
    Please, the spark plug socket is pretty standard or Yamaha special tool (thin) ? I have some problems to insert my standard socket on the spark plug.
    Thanks again.

      fabsalvideo A spark plug socket is a standard tool that any auto parts store will carry.

    Hey there, thanks for making this video. Do you need any special tools for this job? Also, about how long would it take for someone who's never done it? I am considering doing it to my fz this week

    • @sciencebiker9519
      @sciencebiker9519  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a complete novice, expect this job to take 3-4 hours. Tools you might want are spark plug socket, multiple lengths of extension, torque wrench, pliers, hex keys to remove fairing bolts, etc.

    For all the effort to get to the plugs you may as well just replace them for new ones 😳

    love the videos. im about to sell my old bike and am considering buying an FJ as my commuter. what do you think the longevity of these bikes might be? do you think they could get, say, 100k on the original powerplant?

    • @sciencebiker9519
      @sciencebiker9519  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What kind of bike are you selling? The short answer to your question is, yes, I expect that with regular maintenance and care an FJ-09 should easily go 100K miles, if not 200K.
      The longer answer is that I think that most modern Japanese bikes (with a few exceptions) should be able to run 100K or more without many issues as long as they are properly serviced at the recommended intervals. Here in the United States, motorcycles are often seen as toys rather than basic transportation so they are often neglected. Also many people buy bikes and then don't ride them very much for one reason or another. Personally I think the worst thing you could do to an FJ09 is not ride it. Because the US motorcycle market is saturated with "low mileage" bikes, it makes it seem like a bike with 70,000 miles is really high miles, which is not at all the case.
      If you bought an FJ09, expecting to put 100K on it as a daily commuter I think you'd be making a good decision. Yes, you will have to replace normal wear and tear items such as the battery, final drive chain/sprocket, and make sure to lube the chassis at the recommended intervals, but the motor shouldn't give you much for trouble. Motor-wise the only thing you should do is make sure the Cam Chain Tensioner recall has been performed. Beyond that you might want to consider a better seat and/or shock absorber depending on your preference and how long you spend on the bike at one time.
      If you're not mechanically inclined you can buy a YES warranty on the bike for about $375 for 5 years unlimited miles. If the dealer you buy the bike from won't sell you YES for pretty close to that price just call around to other dealers that will.

  • @ferrisnox

    If its an iridium plug, you won't need to gap or adjust it. It will stay at the current gap for way way longer (iridium is 6-8x harder than platinum and has a 700 degree higher melting point) . The benefit is you don't have to take your bike halfway apart, ie remove tank, airfilter, breather hoses just to get to the dang plugs. It seems like you fail to realize why laser iridium plugs are far superior. You won't have to do all this. You change them out at 40K miles and call it day.
