- This episode we are looking in to what this convertible style fuel tank is containing, and checking out the state of the fuelpump assembly.

Great job cleaning up the bike. I cleaned out the tank on my 1995 r 1100gs by shaking a pint of BBs mixed with water to loosen any rust flakes and then filled the tank with vinegar for a week. netrualized with baking soda and water after. Two known weak points on this bike are the left side cam chain tensioner and the wiring on the hall effect sensor.If you keep the bike ,you will want to replace both of those parts.
Thanks man! I found a kit with acid cleaner and a liner fluid, that I will run through it to. I suddenly had a minor leak in the bottom of the tank. So that should take care of that issue aswell!
When do these weak points reveal itself? I'm selling the bike when I'm done, but I don't want to sell a bike that breaks down either! I appreciate the tips!
@@pristineprojects4881 The left cam chain tensioner is an easy fix and the part is about $80us. It can stick at any time and cause traumatic engine failure that is why BMW upgraded the part. The hall effect sensor is more difficult to replace ,when it goes out the bike just stops running until the part is replaced. I was able to do both repairs by watching repair videos on TH-cam. Loved it! Just a tip on YT videos, and film in general: Show, don't talk. When you put some sand and water in the tank to clean it? Everybody knows what/why you are doing it. No need to pause and explain. (Unless you want to introduce a debate and give reasons for your choices) 99% of the people who click on your vid, know what/why you are doing it. 1% are clueless 12 year old kids.

Great work. I just replaced the fuel pump, filter and pipes on mine as it stood for a long time. Also just over 90 000km and it still runs like new
Thanks man! Staying ahead of maintenance is so underrated. Just being able to drive and not worry is great! I finally got to drive mine for the first time a few weeks ago. And i were really surprised over how easy they are to handle. With new tires and all, there wasn't many signs of old age while riding it! 😁 with the cold weather coming in, I realized how high value heated grips really have aswell😅

@@TiensvanZyl Thanks, and good luck to you aswell! What kind of yacht are you working on? Money is definatly needed to do any work on boats, want to install some bow lights in mine. Then i checked the price on stainless steal ones😅
I used to use concrete mixer for cleaning fuel tank, add some citric acid to water/sand mix and start rolling. Rust off and clean all metal parts. This method works best on metal tanks.
Like one of those Big rotating buckets? Just strapped it on and let it rotate?

Nice video! I have a R1150GS 2000 mod. on which I want to make some repairs this winter. I didn't think about cleaning the tank But after watching your video, I thing I have to take a look what's inside my tank. Nice idea to 3D print å lock for the fuel pump/filter assembly. I would like to use that method. Where did you get the file for the print? Greetings Thomas.
Thanks! My tank had been sitting open in the middle of the forrest, thats why it was so bad! Just made the file my self. Easy enough to draw out. I could send it to you if i can gind it again!
@@pristineprojects4881 Thank you for your answer! My bike is in quite good condition.I´ll check the tank anyway but probably I will not get the problems you had. Did you find the bike in the Norwegian forests? Youst wonder because og your reaction when you emptied he tank ;)
@@twarnemu kind of, Swedish forrest tho :p it was stolen (and found by the police) in previous owners care, and they hade broken up the tank lid. And after that it had been sitting outside of his house, wich were in the middle of a forrest, without any covers. So then the fuel tank filled up with water and here we are 😅

Actualy im facing with similar problem with my tank. I can only predict that the way how you work with the rust is not the right way. Instead of sand please use small nails. Never put the water to tank- if you did that you shall mix the rest of the water with high aclohol mixture just to vapor all water. Once the tank had a rust inside most probably you will have the rust again very soon. Maybe im wrong but originaly BMW tank was coated with come copper inside. At the end you shall use some paint. There is some type of paint on the market which you shall use.
You are correct! In my next video im doing the tank again, acid cleaning it to remove rust, and coating it again! 😊

Sorry for my late response, i cant seem to find it anywere. But if you get me the measurements, then I draw a new one. I just need outer diameter, and stud to stud length across.
