The most practical essential list I have seen. The notebook priceless. I have hundreds of loose papers in my purse, bags or cases where I jot down chords for songs. Why have I never thought of this!!’ 😊
What’s inside my ukulele gig bag are: 1. Capo 2. Extra strings 3. Battery for my uke 4. Line-in cord 5. Strap is already attached to my uke. 6. Tuner ❤️
Here’s a few things that I like to keep handy that weren’t on your list: -StewMac touch up sticks & fret end file -egg shakers & kazoos -D’Addario lemon oil -cork guitar neck wrest …and I’ve been meaning to pick up a string winder too… The neck rest is really good for cleaning and changing strings. The fret end file is made specifically for fret sprout, and won’t damage your ukulele if you use it as directed in their video. The touch up sticks are amazing for buffing out any scratches or file marks. I have a Martin T1-K as my go to, the soft case it comes with is nice, I keep a Boveda moisture corrector inside where the ukulele goes, and all my accessories fit in the front pocket except for the head rest. Your advice about finger nail clippers is much appreciated, I have a designated pair for my ukulele accessories. I prefer the D’Addario ukulele sound hole tuner to a clip on, it doesn’t fall off. But I do have both. I also prefer the much smaller D’Addario capo, I think the larger Kyser capo gets in the way for some chords. The felt ukulele picks from Martin are real nice too, until they go through the washing machine, but I haven’t found a felt pick that doesn’t get trashed in the washing machine! Thank you for all the great videos! You are very much appreciated!
Loved the video! I have a lot of these things in my bag too! I also think it is important to mention a ukulele humidifier, especially if you live in dry climates. It helps keep your uke stay at the perfect humidity so your uke doesn’t get any cracks in the wood or something like that. Longevity is important!
Que alegría encontrar alguien como tu!!! He visto millones de tutoriales de ukelele y sin duda eres la mejor enseñando. Eres increible!!! Si vivieras en España daría todo porque fueras mi profe y la de mi hija. Enhorabuena! !!
Nail clippers are an excellent choice, don't forget that they can be used to cut strings to length as well as trimming nails. Thank you for the fun videos!
The book stand is cool. I bought a metallic stand with a stubby leg. Small nickel sized magnets are perfect for holding the music in place. Music stand was available at the guitar center for $25. Love your videos Ms B. You're beautiful as always!
Just got a clip on tuner. Huge difference in ease over my phone app. Don't have all the accessories but the nail clippers are top of list. Helpful, thanks.
I used sand paper for my nails. 3 different grit from not so hard grit to softest grit. But I cut it to small pieces for easier handling. I used it every time I wanted to play. Great list of accessories. You even give a few tips on every items. I love it.💖💖💖
I use sand paper because the edge of of my nails will be so soft and smooth to the touch and great for the string. And of course I loved it. I used almost everything on the list.🙂🙂🙂
I play guitar , mandolin , Ukulele , and harmonica . Wen I go out I will carry a bag with several pockets to keep things organized . in it I will normally have 2 tuners , extra strings for all my instruments . a small instrument stand , nail clippers ,guitar picks ,music notebook and song book ,harmonica holder reading glasses ( yes I am getting old LOL ) 3 capos I will sometimes use 2 capos at once on the guitar , a cleaning cloth , and camera with small stand ,cord charts for each instruments, extra battery's for all instruments and tuners ,and string winder .
Though I'm a recent beginner, I do have most of your list already: Snark Extra string set Combo winder/cutter (D'addario) Travel stand Capo Microfiber cloth Picks (leather & felt) Chord chart I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Congrats on being a new mommy! Mahalo!
journal: checked; picks: checked; tuner: checked; capo: checked; scrunchie? hehe! I also carry (loose)note cards and pens! (I have a book stand exactly like that - which I love!)
That's such a smart video idea! It's really great to see what you find essential. I only play at home so I don't need a kit but this was still helpful!
Which brand of ukulele do you recommend for a brand new ukulele player? I just started playing with a borrowed Ukulele recently and my momma loves how happy it makes me so she is actually going to buy me a brand new Uke of my own and I start my Uke lessons next week! I love your videos and how very helpful and resourceful you are so I thought you might be able to give me an idea of which brands to try and which ones might not be worth the money. Any advice you can give me would be very appreciated. Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Oh, book stand! I don’t have but ohhhh I wish I had it all the time!! To hold the song you’re playing, because I’m always have to lift it or bend over to find where I am!
Layan ! I have students who struggle with this too. Use the soft part of your index finger and go SLOW. Yes, a pick would help, but you should still practice this with your hand :)
Hello Ms.B!! Great video! We need everything you have listed here! Where can I find the table top book stand? I have been looking for one like this. Love your 'tips' videos almost as much as your tutorials. I made the flower lei's and gave them to my young patrons on the first day of class and then on the last day I had made the ukulele stand (out of cardboard) and gave it away in a drawing. I tried to share it on you instagram but I don't think I was successful at it. I might try again so you can see what you have inspired me to make. Thank you for everything! Have a good one! :-)
Cindy Hughes ah!! What’s your Instagram username? I’ll add you so I can see this! Do you have Daiso stores near you? I bought the book stand at the Daiso (these are the Japanese dollar stores). I bought some for my students as well and they LOVED them b
Bernadette Teaches Music we have Family Dollar or Dollar General around here, I’ll shop around. My instagram is ceeleehugs I just tried to post it again. It’s been a long time since I’ve used Instagram.
I hope you find one in your dollar store. Mine cost $5 because it is made of bamboo, but it was worth it. If you can't find one, consider this one I found on Amazon amzn.to/2NvUUtg
Very good, Bernadette...the only other thing that I would add to your list is a string winder with a string clipper attached......This can save you some time and also avoid some fatigue in your hand.....:)
Thank you for this video, Bernadette! It was very helpful. I am trying to add ukulele items to my Christmas list for this year, and this is just what I needed!😁👍🏼 So glad I found your TH-cam channel😘
38K subscribers? I bet 37.9 K are in love with you... ;) Very interesting video, as always! My clip-on tuner's gotta be my #1 accessory. Most of the other items will be useful to me if I play more outside of home, which I want to do. So I'm gonna use this tutorial to build my "to go kit". Thanks!
I always carry coloured dot stickers! I'm left handed and whenever people want to have a try of my ukulele they get so confused because it's all backwards for them, so the stickers really help them rather than me 😂😂
Hey Gabriel! Thank you so much :) Oh, you're right! I was waiting until that ukulele was back in stock (it had sold out). I'll edit that video today and it will be the next one I release. You're awesome for reminding me ❤️❤️❤️
Ms. B. sorry dont mean to rush you. I'm just excited about it, I've been looking to buy a Uke and was waiting for the right one. This might be it.... a black uke would be rad!
Aww you’re so nice :) if anything, this made me excited to edit the video and publish it a little faster. Knowing someone is looking forward to the video is much more rewarding, you know?
Great video :) i like these kind of "around the Ukulele" videos :) For me the most important thing to carry around is my phone. I use it quite often to make a sound record of for example a strumming pattern that i have to remember. and of course i use it to look up chords i dont know whenever i need them.
Bernadette Teaches Music Oh wow! Oh my gosh that’s awesome!! Vivo en Hollywood muy cercas del Hollywood Bowl and sometimes they have Orchestras and a verity of music playing in the summer there and so it inspired me to want to learn to play an instrument. And I found this fabulous teacher in TH-cam and thanks to her awesomeness I’m pretty sure soon I’m ganna be playing at the Hollywood bowl giving you a shout out!!!! Besitos 😚 and can’t wait for ur next video 😉
Nice surprise, glad to see that the bag is coming in useful. I shall have to do a similar video about what l carry to gigs. Do you realise that it is nearly a year since you encouraged me to start a TH-cam channel and l think that l am up to 27 videos and 33 subscribers from countries as far apart as the U.S.A., Japan, Canada, India, Pakistan Serbia, U.K and some other weird and wonderful places. My daughter has just bought a 54 inch smart T.V. and all my two year grandson wants to watch is me on my ukulele. Phoebe is continually going on gigs with me and is learning how to communicate with the audience. Not easy for a 7 year old. We recently played for her class at school. Her end of year report was fantastic. It even mention me and our gig. Probably the best comment that l've ever had on a school report - pity that my parents are no longer about to see it. Regards to Jose, KitKat and Arigato. Ken XXX
Hey Ken! ❤ Thank you so much for sending that bag to me! I would love to see a list of the essentials you bring along with you gig! Ken, I am so proud of you for taking Phoebe with you on your gigs! That's how I started everything with Nanoha. Please continue making videos and posting them. Your kiddies really love them :)
Bernadette Teaches Music . Your wish is my command. I've made the wished for video and it is now on my TH-cam channel. Hope you like it. I would never, however, sing that silly little song at the beginning of the video to you. You would certainly get the full original version. Love to you and yours. Ken XXX
I just carry my nail clippers :D I think I'll get the book stand next. I'm tired of finding ways to prop up my phone for recording. I enjoyed watching this video :)
I see 😊,hehehe... I recorded that one back in May 2015 :) Thank you Ms B. That’s the first song I learned to play & sing with a guitar way back in 2000, I was 15 at that time:) 🎙🎶🎸 Peace&love
I'm slowly building my ukulele accessories. I currently have spare strings and picks in my bag. I also have a big A4 sized ring binder folder that mostly stays at home, but has any printouts or handouts in. I have a couple of smaller notebooks on the way, as well as a snark tuner and a strap.
Bernadette Teaches Music This one: www.amazon.com/Music-Adjustable-Leather-Electric-Acoustic/dp/B07258MDTT/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1531038242&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=p%26p+guitar+strap&dpPl=1&dpID=51YhxWWrSaL&ref=plSrch
I have a question in general: I've been playing the ukulele since roughly two months and I learned to use my thumb as my first finger somehow. Which means I put my thumb on e.g. the second fret when playing the a minor chord. Should I change the way I do it or is this okay? Just want to know
Josi Rostin yes. You should change that. My students have done that and it makes me cringe when I see how their wrist is bending. It’s a habit... and like any habit, it’s created by repetition and repetition is what it will take to undo it.
Is ukulele stand safe? i want buy it, i dont like that my uke always in bag, but i have big cat))) is it safe and stable in stand? thank you for your videos, i'm begginer and they reaky helpful for me!
Сергей Беляев it depends on how hyper your cat is! And where you put the stand. My cats have definitely tipped over my ukulele on this stand. It has only happened once or twice, but I cringe at the thought of it. Now I put the stand on my table. The cats don’t go on the table 😊
Bernadette Teaches Music no way!!! I teach in Loveland! Small world. If you ever visit, I run a weekly uke group in Boulder that has some of the NICEST people. You'd LOVE IT. (And they would love you!) Also, yes, and Colorado has it all. I am in love with this beautiful state.
I get this question about twice a week! ❤❤❤ Here's the resource I give everyone who asks and no one complains afterwards ukuguides.com/maintenance/how-to-fix-ukulele-string-buzzing/

whats a combo winder/cutter? Thks!
journal: checked; picks: checked; tuner: checked; capo: checked; scrunchie? hehe! I also carry (loose)note cards and pens! (I have a book stand exactly like that - which I love!)
Daniel Santos no scrunchie, Daniel!?! 😂
Where did you get your book stand?
OMG loving the makeup ❤️
_marnie baker_ 😘😘😘 thank you!!!
I also have a nail file in my gig bag!! So useful plus I always know I have one! I also have extra strings because you never know what can happen
Prisca Hebert yes!! And strings can be unpredictable!! Everything could be fine one second and then POP! GONE!!!
That's such a smart video idea! It's really great to see what you find essential. I only play at home so I don't need a kit but this was still helpful!
Ah, you need to start playing with people! It'll make you A LOT better A LOT faster!!!
Bernadette Teaches Music I would! But there's nobody I could play with!
look at what I found... facebook.com/groups/1620295824862088/
The Bondi stand is cool! I didnt expect the nail clippers though 😁 cute checklist
😘😘😘aww, thank you!!!!
Come out with ukulele calendar...make it classy...except for August ...make that one hot
blind09 😂😂😂
I’d buy Dat!
Great idea on the nail clippers and book stand! What type of ukulele strings do you carry? How do you know when to use a capo?
I carry Aquila super nylgut strings :)
There are some songs that are much easier to play with a capo. Hotel california and riptide to name a few :)
I use a book stand to play. It's really very useful!
Agreed! There's no going back now ❤❤❤ love my book stand
Which brand of ukulele do you recommend for a brand new ukulele player? I have all of these items!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Nice video again!!👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
WINNING!!!!!!
Oh, book stand! I don’t have but ohhhh I wish I had it all the time!! To hold the song you’re playing, because I’m always have to lift it or bend over to find where I am!
This is very useful Mrs. B. 😀I just got a ukulele and this is a great video to demonstrate things I will need.
Thank you, Alondra! ❤❤
Glad you liked this. Hope it helps :)
I find it really hard to Stum upwards so if I buy a ukulele pic would that help??
Layan ! I have students who struggle with this too. Use the soft part of your index finger and go SLOW.
Yes, a pick would help, but you should still practice this with your hand :)
Nice strap! 😉 Looks good on you! 😊 Glad you're enjoying it.
Not essential, but handy to have is a string winder.☮❤🐾🎸🎵
That strap is my absolute favorite!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Bernadette Teaches Music this is a nice one!
Very good, Bernadette...the only other thing that I would add to your list is a string winder with a string clipper attached......This can save you some time and also avoid some fatigue in your hand.....:)
ahh! I've never used a string winder... I should get one 😊😊
Thank you, this is very helpful. Can the ukulele stand be used as a music/journal stand? I appreciate you, Bernadette!
Totally getting a vintage leather ukulele strap off Etsy (love them)!
Do you have a finger shaker in your ukulele bag

Do we need the capotraste on ukelele?? What is use for
What is your opinion on music stand? Right now I’m using a book stand but notice a lot of people carry the 3-legged music stand
My ukulele doesn't have the buttons for a strap but I have seen the ones that have a hook to attach to the ukulele. Are those safe to use?
I just bought a uke leash for mine. It hasn't arrived yet, but the video on the site is what sold me!
Thank you for this video, Bernadette! It was very helpful. I am trying to add ukulele items to my Christmas list for this year, and this is just what I needed!😁👍🏼 So glad I found your TH-cam channel😘

This will be helpful when I get ukulele question do have and play a guitar because I think I've seen one in the background
Glad you like it :)
I don't play guitar... I just have one that a friend gave to me ❤❤
A book stand is genius!! Why didn’t I think about that?! :)
😉 I use it so so much!
I always carry coloured dot stickers! I'm left handed and whenever people want to have a try of my ukulele they get so confused because it's all backwards for them, so the stickers really help them rather than me 😂😂

Bernadette Teaches Music I got the idea from you 😅 Btw, I hear Japan isn't doing so good weather-wise, I hope you're okay! 😰
Thumbs up!!! Very useful vid. Where is that black uke unboxing vid???

I see 😊,hehehe... I recorded that one back in May 2015 :) Thank you Ms B. That’s the first song I learned to play & sing with a guitar way back in 2000, I was 15 at that time:) 🎙🎶🎸 Peace&love
I'm slowly building my ukulele accessories. I currently have spare strings and picks in my bag. I also have a big A4 sized ring binder folder that mostly stays at home, but has any printouts or handouts in.
I have a couple of smaller notebooks on the way, as well as a snark tuner and a strap.
Ohhh! Which strap did you buy? 😃😃😃

What was the phone tuner you said you have ?
Hi Arianna! I use PanoTuner ❤️❤️
Thank you !!!! I have been looking for a good one
Arianna C hope you like it! It’s super simple, but I like it :)
whats a Capo for?
Helps raise the sound of the strings. A capo changes the key and it can make certain songs easier to play or it can make them easier to sing!
So true for the notebook ;)
you are the queen of ukulele notebooks 👑
Thank you!
❤️❤️❤️thank you too :)
What is a capo?
How to use the capotastre
I love my hark!

Bernadette Teaches Music thank you so much!
He love something new ^_^ thx for answer, table is a good idea! my cat don't go on the table too:)
Algo me dice que tu hablas español! 😊😅♥️🇵🇦

Thank you so much!!! ❤❤
Great info! Thanks!
If you sing, could you do a video on how to play the Ukulele low enough so you can hear your voice when you sing because it's a big problem for me
Would you send me a video on instagram so that I can hear what you sound like? This way I can make a better tutorial ❤❤
