Same for me. We had 2 breaks in band from March - September 2020 and end of September 2020 - June 2021. My daughter got a ukulele for her birthday in November and I got myself one too, for Christmas. That way we can play together.
Hi, just want to say I haven't changed my strings since I've got my ukukele three years ago. I didn't hear the sound getting worse, but mainly I was just too nervous to try and change the strings! Today, I watched your video, took heart (and the strings I got ages ago) and it worked really well! Thanks a lot... Well, in fact I actually watched quite a view different videos, but yours was the one I actually used. Great job!
This video is really helpful. I've already done it a few times, but I always forget how to do the knot (for the traditional tie bridge) 😀 so I'll come back here when I need to change my strings again 👍
Ah, thank you so much!! My uke has been broken for quite a while and I just got strings. I was totally nervous when I realized I didn't know how to change strings. I came across this video and I definitely don't regret it. Thank you so much!!
Thank you again Katie! I decided it was time to change the strings on my concert ukulele, and was guided through the entire process by watching this video. It is a traditional tie bridge and I finished so much faster for the instruction given here. Changed to a set of Aquila reds, and am very happy I did, but if not for you, I'd probably Still be trying to figure it out... LOL.
Thank you thank you thank you. I only have slotted bridges on my ukuleles, but my students have tied bridges so this was SO incredibly helpful for having to restring a uke in less than 10 minutes before class.
You're so sweet! I totally know what you mean! I have project pieces that I've been working on for guitar and ukulele to help maintain my skills, but I keep getting thrown off my routine ;). I hope you never stop playing.
I'm left handed as well and have started learning. I think you might as well learn the right handed way since you're starting fresh. There's a lot more resources available for right handed people. And to be honest you'll need to have good coordination for both hands to play
You can do it. It does take some practice, but most people feel the same way that you do. It's ok if it's not perfect the first, second, or even the 20th time. Just keep trying and it will get easier the more you do it.
I recently discovered I needed to do a string set change at 12:15 at night so the ukulele would be ready for "ukulele club" at my kid's school. I've changed many electric guitar and bass strings, even some acoustics, but never a tie bridge. I had it done by 1AM, but still needed break-in. My suggestion: use the existing strings as practice units for those portions you feel comfortable with, such as the tie portion. Trust me, you CAN do this. First, this video is good, so this is a fantastic start. Second, it's new to you so of course it will be a challenge, a challenge you can rise to overcome. Third, who cares how long it takes. If you want this to take 4 hours, then so be it. It's better to take your time and do the job right and to learn from it. Watch the video a few times, especially the parts that apply to your ukulele. I'm sure by now you've taken care of this and you're good to go.
It's actually how to -like- change strings in general. You can use these methods for changing strings on acoustic and classical guitar too. That's probably is the reason why this video is one of the best of changing strings videos.
Hi, Katie! I haven't yet had to change strings, thank goodness! But it has been a constant fear that I would break a string while playing and wouldn't know how to do it. This came at such a great time. I am bookmarking these! Mwah! 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💋 💋 💋
Thanks for much for the video. Just recently got myself a ukulele that is in need of re-stringing. It has a slotted bridge ... this video provided me all I need to know ! Thanks a million !
Thank you so much for this short but informative video! I have been playing steel string acoustic guitar since forever, so I am very familiar with solid headstocks. But the tie bar bridge was new for me. I tried to put my strings on two other times following two other videos, but they just popped out of the bridge before I got them up to pitch! Third time's a charm though. Your technique of looping the end under the main string, then under the loop you just made, made all the difference!
I'm building a concert ukulele from a traditional neck and a wooden jewelry box that I've had lying around for 20 years. Your video is very instructional to me...
Thanks for the video. At first I inserted the string twice through the tuning post to secure it according to other advice but quickly pulled it out because it was scraping off some of the string's outer coating. I then followed your method. I didn't cut my strings - other advice said to leave it which I agreed might be useful if a string breaks. I will keep it like that until the strings settle at least.
Immensely helpful and so much better than every other video or manual I watched/read. Was able to change the strings on my slotted bridge and my pin bridge ukes thanks to this video.
Thank you for all your videos. I find them all very helpful. I bought some carbon D'Addario strings for my tenor ukulele and needed this video for instructions on the Loop-De-Loo method. But when I was putting on the thinnest A string, the loop came undone and I had already trimmed the length from both the top and bottom since I thought I was finished. I put the string on again using the Loop-De-Loo method and when tuning, it untied again! So I improvised and tried a Loop-De-Loop-De-Loo method and that held. Just wanted you to know. Again, thank you for all your videos. I always look forward to new ones.
So glad that it helped, and thanks for sharing your experience. Yes, I have found that some strings are more slippery than others, so I'm happy you found something that worked for you :).
Thank you! This is super helpful. I watched two other videos on changing ukulele strings but yours was the only one that made the loopdiloop clear. Thanks again!
I'm new to the ukulele family. I've been fearing whenever I would need to change the strings. This tutorial was extremely helpful and I have more confidence that I can handle. I truly appreciate all the tutorials you make. Thank you,
I am so happy that this video made string changing less intimidating :). I can't express how grateful I am that you watch and that these videos are helping you. Thank you for your support. I really appreciate you :).
This was a great video especially since there aren't many other videos on changing the slotted bridges. You said to turn the tuning peg down and counterclockwise to tune up the new string. I did that and broke a new string when I cut the excess from the top. I was changing string 4 (G). I realized turning the peg down wasn't counterclockwise on that side of my uke. I've got it now! Thanks so much!!! I enjoy your channel! :)
"Be careful it might snap and hit you." Guitarists: first time? In all seriousness, thanks a lot for this, I snapped my strings real bad trying to shred on the uke.
Thank you so much! That was a very easy to follow guide which made the whole process a lot less scary. Now I've restrung my instrument it holds tune and sounds better than it has for ages! 😄👍
This was really helpful. As a beginner, I was nervous about changing strings and you demystified the process for me. I feel like I know my ukes better now.
Thanks for the great video which shows exactly what the title says: restring a ukulele. Two pluses: I enjoy your very pleasant voice and your skin health is beautiful.

Excellant video, Katie....You always put so much effort in your videos and I really appreciate your endeavors...... Showing 3 different types of stringing methods is great!....I have not seen anyone explain and show this better than you just did....Really, really good work!!!!.......Oh gosh, am I going to have to buy a Ukulele with the pins now (I don't have one of those)?...lol...you made my Thursday, Katie!...:)
girl, you look so strong - don't take me wrong! Im not saying you are big or fat or ugly, no, its the opposite, you are pretty - and so cool playing, handling this tiny instrument. Im trying one and when you said the ukulele will "eventually get in tune" helped me to have patience and , u know.. = ) had to sand the bridge piece and etc, but calm down, "it eventually will get in tune". Thanks, keep up the good work!
Nice video 😊 i was just checking to see if there was a good video on this subject that i can link people if they need some instuctions 😊 the only notes i have is 1. Clean your fretboard every time you change strings since it’s the best time to do so. 2. If your ukulele has a lose bridge keep track or take a picture off how it sit before you start since the intonation will be off if it falls off and you put it on the wrong way. 3. It is not allways nessesary to “baby” your instrument they are made to be used, sure take care off it but they are not made off glass. But still you you cover everything else and this will be the video i will send to people who needs some instuctions on changeing strings 😊 (Also great work, keep it up 😊)
thanks for addressing various types of bridges and headstocks. a couple of posts brought up issues i also have: 1) to use thicker strings for low-G or baritone, any strategies how to check the uke, like the grooves in the nut and especially the slotted style saddle, and what proper methods to modify those areas? 2) saving strings from an old set for backup or revisiting an alternate tuning -- i suppose once the ends are cut that's it. is this why some people play with uncut strings like long whiskers sticking out?
Great tutorial! I know I will be referring back to this one often, (or at least as often as I change strings). According to the information given here I am almost due for a string change on my concert uke, which I received in late April. I have played it every day since. I wish I had a tenor as well so I could keep one tuned with a low G string, but will have to wait to make that happen. Thanks again for all you do to instruct and inform us. Blessings.
I hope this helps. I know changing strings can be boring or cumbersome, but everyone breaks a string ever once in a while, so I thought I'd make a video. It makes me happy that you'll find it usytoday and for the days to come. Thanks for showing your support. It means a lot to me.
Thank you! I tried to cover as much information as I could without being overwhelming. This is actually the second time that I filmed this one, and I had to re-film it because the first one was 20 minutes long! I decided to make a voice over style tutorial, and it turned out WAY better :).
I'm new to ukulele but thanks to you and your videos I'm learning slowly but surely. Your words of inspiration have also helped me overcome a bleak period in my life. Can you post a video of that fabulous DIY neck stand? 👍🎶
Wow, I had no clue you could buy a nut lubricant! All my orchestra teachers in school (I played cello for nine years and developed horrible tendinitis so I can't play that instrument anymore) taught us to grab a pencil and run the tip up and down in the nut a few times. The graphite did a pretty good job!
Yes, I have that in a video. It's in my testing 5 hacks video that I made last year. It's a great way to quickly take care if the problem, and it's cheaper 😁😁😁.
Thanks for this video, the only one I've found with a through bridge and slotted headstock which my ukulele has. One question, can you keep and re-use the old strings? I am changing my strings as a sound experiment, if I prefer the old ones, can I put them back on? They are only a couple of months old. Thanks!

Yes, I have that in a video. It's in my testing 5 hacks video that I made last year. It's a great way to quickly take care if the problem, and it's cheaper 😁😁😁.
That was perfect! Thank you!
So happy that this helped you.

Thanks so much! Super easy tutorial to follow!
Thanks for this video, the only one I've found with a through bridge and slotted headstock which my ukulele has. One question, can you keep and re-use the old strings? I am changing my strings as a sound experiment, if I prefer the old ones, can I put them back on? They are only a couple of months old. Thanks!
Thanx, it was really helpful!!!
