2020: the year I start thinking about using the E chord 😂(maybe) 😁
RICKY! I am LOVING your videos :)
Can't wait to hang out with you 🤗🤗
With ring finger pad, semi bar 4th fret.
I feel the exact same about the b and bb chords haha!
There's a barred E chord which you might find easier. Use your first finger to barre all the strings at the 4th fret, and then use your pinky to play the highest string at the 7th fret (which is easily found because it has an identifying dot on the fret board).
@@mandolinic this is how i do it too :))
I love how she always says “look up” and I actually look up like she’s my teacher right in front of me and then I’m like oh wait I’m watching a TH-cam video
I know.. right! 🧡🧡
Me too! ...and then, I laugh at myself😂...how crazy
Yeah me too
I said the same thing it's so cool right? Ahaha

Magic, thank you! My arthritic fingers are a real nuisance, but I'm persevering. I'm only 80 years old! :-))
Wishing you luckk!
@@ananyapamde4514 Thank you!!
Rick. Thank you, you are now my inspiration. I'm 74 this week. [Does it get an easier?]
@@BirdWhisperer46 Practise, practise, is the only way, and if like me you can't stretch to some chords don't worry, there are hundreds of songs with the easy chords. Good luck! :-))
@@rickwilmot9127 My uke is out of the case when I sit at my desk, till end of day. I practice with it many times thru the day, but, I am so new that even picking it up counts as "practice". Where do you start? Strumming, picking, chords?
The very first time I ever strummed a D chord it changed my life. I loved how sweet and inviting it sounded, it felt like it was giving me a sonic hug. I love all 20 of these chords. Thanks for empowering so many people with music!
Hey! You guys taught me twist and shout!
I love how to tell us to look up. It’s really helpful.
‘Look up’ makes me laugh every time! Great instruction as always. I’ve been playing uke for 2.5 years and avoided Bb with all my might lol. I finally conquered it out of necessity but it took hours of practice to do so.
Marion Tor hi Marion! I am so glad you have conquered Bb chord!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I also chuckled at you liking the “look up” 😆
"Look up" *thank you*
🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️ thank you too
i rly didnt look lmao
Haha yes!!
The fact that you told me to look up exactly when I would look down baffles me 😭😂

I like how she knows when I'm looking down then goes "look up" it happended multiple times and also you give me the best vibes. I would like you to be my teacher rather then someone else who makes ukulele tutorials on youtube
I got my ukulele two days ago, and have learned almost all of the cords in this video from watching. Thank you so much.
Oh wow you are fast that is really good!
16 years old, just got back from a camping trip where I
learned that 5 people in my friend group know or are learning ukulele so I was inspired 😅
I just started playing Uke at Christmas when I bought it. I am 58 years old, it's hard on my hands but I love it and love your videos. Love the "look up" also :)
I swapped to ukulele after a skateboarding injury limited my motion a lot and I almost quit because even after a few years it still feels like a lot of strain. Seeing the struggle you go through makes me realize maybe its not as much of a limit as ive been thinking. It helped me heal this far maybe its time to push it i can get all these chords if i push through the pain and maybe ill gain some movementback. Keep up the positivity
"Look up" is soooo helpful!
I get caught up trying to figure things out on my own & its really nice to be reminded that there's a teacher in front of you!
Your teaching skills are amazing. I really do feel involved even through a video. When you said "look up" I was like 😳
the way she says look up is so helpful and it feels like I'm not watching her through a screen. Something about her makes me feel so comfortable the ways she waits it so weird but cool at the same time, Thank youu
Got my ukulele yesterday. You've already helped me so much!! Thank you!😘 I LOVE how you say "look up". Had me giggling because it was like you could see me, and I did, indeed, look up. Lol
lmao i got my ukulele 2 days ago
This is one of the most useful videos ever! I just came home from a jam with a bunch of guitarists, and I wish I had done this lesson first. Year 2 for me, it's about time to memorize these.
I love how she teaches and encourages her viewers at hard chords
You are the most incredible teacher I've found online. your style is so immersive,I'm sure you really can see me hardcore concentrating when you say 'look up' because I'm clearly sitting across from you on the couch 😂😂
…Thanks Bernadette ! my friend just brought me a ukelele by surprise…your teaching manner is perfect for me…
I learned 4 chords yesterday. Here to learn more today. Day 2.
How it going now?
Heyyy...your videos be awesome...I got my ukulele 7 days ago and I got your videos on TH-cam on that very day and I'm thankful to God for that .. I'm following you since that day...and i ve learnt a lot..kudossss❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for this video, Bernadette. I am retiring at the end of January (14 working days left!) and my goals are to improve my beginner uke skills by playing for 30 - 40 minutes every day, learn Spanish, studying 45 - 60 minutes each day, and walk for 1 hour each day. My retirement resolutions!!! God bless! - Dave
congratulations!
Bernadette, you are so much fun and encouraging! Very authentic person.!
When you do a chord with open strings, you can think of the nut as your index barring a "virtual fret" before the nut. You can move these patterns up the fretboard as long as you bare the strings with the index (like you're moving the nut higher on the fretboard, which is exactly what you do when using a capo by the way, you keep a shape but you get a different chord). Look at Am and Bm or C7 and D7 for instance. They are basically the exact same shapes. It's like you moved the nut to the 2nd fret (because the B is 2 semi-tones higher than the A, same thing with D versus C). Nice lesson, I'll focus on these chords for a start. Thank you.
Your first video was a great pace for beginners. It was inspiring to be able to play a few chords that related to a song. This one has way too many chords crammed into one video, and not enough time in between, so there's too much stopping and starting required.
That said, I will be back for more! Thanks Bernadette.
The Way She Says "Look Up" While im Practicing the Chord For myself makes me think this Video already planned what im Doing (It helps Me Look to the Tutorial and I LOVE it)
I really needed to do this and practice these cords. This will be a post I visit frequently. ❤❤❤
Hi Ms. B and thank you for the lesson. This will keep me and my dog, Mollie, busy. When I start playing, Mollie comes into the room then promptly goes to sleep. I think she likes the sound of the ukulele.
badmonks that is so adorable!!! My female kitty does this too!! I think she likes when I play because it means I’m home with her ❤️❤️❤️
My rabbits like it too.
I actually agree with the way YOU started out. I feel I need to build confidence, and that will make it easier for me to move up later. To build confidence, I decided to stick to 4-6 chords, do them really really well - try diff ways to play them, strumming etc - learn several songs, perform them for friends in casual gatherings... and I am SURE naturally I will move on at a certain point.
I love the way you say "OK look up" gets my attention straight away. My kids and I are learning Ukelele. This is such a great resource. Thank you 😁👍from the Shepherds 🇬🇧
Because I've been playing casually for so long, I've luckily learned all of these chords!
I'm really trying to get more serious with ukulele. I want to be a better player than I am. I feel that making sure I go over basics is a good foundation, since I never really learned properly previously.
Thank you teacher for sharing us your so nice uku playing were now starting to practice and you are our teacher . God bless
I just want to let you know that you are a passionate teacher. Thank youu po. Love from Philippines. ♥️
i want you to know that youre the best guitar/uke teavher ive ever seen and im not just saying that ive tried so many people and nobody clicked until right now
Thanks!
Cool video 👍🏻 What I like best, is that you tell us different ways of how to get Cs, Ds etc. That’s very helpful. Might use one or the other instead of the regular way. 🙏🏻
Hi Nelly! 🤗🤗 I am glad you liked that :)
I try to make something for everyone.
Just got a ukulele three days ago and feel like I've already learned so much thanks to your videos!! :) I love when you say "look up" and remind to breathe, and when you share little tips and remind about best practices. You're a really great and fun teacher! Thanks so much!! I'm studying to be a children's librarian and hope to be able to play an instrument for storytimes.
You are awesome!! My first Ukulele song was from your channel. And I am so glad that you are just not a musician but A teacher too. I love the way you teach. 🧡🧡
I live in Malaysia. Happy to learn from you. Fm is a challenge for me. I can play guitar, but now I have a weak left shoulder, so ukulele is best. I started playing from a very young age.
I've been given a Tenor Ukulele for my 70th birthday and I am finding your 30 day Ukulele Challenge really useful and informative ( and Fun!). One of the things I really like are the flashcard cutouts that you have included just after the video 7 page. Do you have cutouts for the 20 most used chords that I can also turn into flashcards?
You’re a pro at teaching, you have lady fingers so easier to emulate, thanks
I'm watching this without my ukulele and STILL look up when you say that hahaha! I really like your teaching style and the fact you left in your little mistakes... You're right, it's not easy! Also we both have similar favourite chords! Fm is SO beautiful! I love all the 7ths... C7, G7, D7, Dm7, E7, A7 (especially those two together)B7... They are all so pretty sounding!
Omg! I can finally do E and Bb! Life is Bliss with a teacher like this! Thank you Queen B! Enjoy Namm. Say hi to Terry next week!
Yay yay yay!!! It's time for you to learn some new songs, then! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@BernadetteTeachesMusic yes I agree how about doing a few tutorials which feature chords like Bb Eb E Gm etc... here's a perfect oldie but Goodie. Ebony and Ivory in the key of F. There's 3 of the chords you featured in this song. Eb Bb and Gm plus a few more like D Am G C F etc etc. I'm learning it for a gig on January 28 help!
You are a great teacher. Thanks!
Thank you so much, Alexander ❤️
Wow THANK-YOU this makes it all so much easier, and I will be watching this one over and over again to make it sink in, Cheers Teach I have missed you over the last few months and this video has brought me back to life in Ukulele land.
Marion Voorendt Marion!!! Thank you so much 😊 I’m glad this video was helpful. And thank you for being here. 2019 was a tough one for me, but I’m renewed and back 💪🏼
Hey everyone.
I put a capo on the 5th feet of my guitar so four strings are G C E A.
Now I mix tradition guitar shapes with uke chords... C chord uke/C shape guitar.
AMAZING SOUNDS.
This is so helpful! Thank you for making this video!
Thank you for this. This is a great resource. I’m going thru these every morning
I was practicing the chords from your 1st 30 days challenge this week. And this video is a super good timing. I love your chords' sheet with where to put the fingers!!Thank you so much!!💞
Hi! 🤗🤗🤗 I am glad you liked this video (and that the timing was perfect). Sweet comments like this are so encouraging to me :)
Thank you Bernadette! I started learning ukulele 3 days after you introduced the 30-day challenge in 2018. You've been instrumental in my learning as a beginner. I'd love to see more videos on slightly challenging, unusual sounding, or interesting chords to play. I'm a fan of improvising and jamming, so the more chords I learn the better I can get at coming up with my own chord progressions.
Hey Candice! Thank you so much for the video idea. I'd love to make a video about fun and interesting chords!!! I'll start putting a list together :) Thank you so much for choosing me to be your teacher and for being my student ❤️❤️❤️
Well I was Looking on how to learn how to Play ukulele and I saw your video How easy to teach, I will fallow all your videos Thank you for taking time to teach us :-)
I watched this without my uke in my hands (because my girlfriend is asleep) just to see if there were some vital chords I was missing. (Glad to say I know all these, I've been playing for a while, but I DID pick up some helpful tips regardless) and hearing the intermittent "Look up" when I was already looking up sounded like a funny vocal tic, almost like a hiccup, but it's such a comforting sound. Makes me feel like I'm in good hands every time she says it.
Thanks for enlightening us ,with your cord expressions! You are my favorite uke teacher on U tube !
I'm only a basically a child but I really wanted to learn this instrument and this help A LOT thank you so much!
me: about to leave when i get to hard note
her: don’t leave me just because this is a tricky one
me: gets confused and scared and slowly stops
Haha 🤣
Thank for you this, and everything
B hurts enough practice will get my fingers toughened up though
5months later it doesn’t hurt any more!
This was a very good lesson. I am able to do most of the cords with no problem. You are really helping me a lot....! Thanks Bernadette....!
Wow, Albert! That's awesome ❤️❤️❤️
I am proud of you
Hi Bernadette. I enjoy all your videos! Thank you for making it easier for us beginners/intermediate students, your pace is perfect.
I have noticed lately your videos are a bit more hollow or echoey sounding. The big chair helps some but more fabric someplace to absorb some of that echo might help. A bit like what they do in restaurants to help with crowd noise. I hope you take this as positive constructive help. In no way do I mean to insult or be disrespectful. Thanks again for all your help.
Cheers!
Jess
This really improved my ukulele skills😊😊
THANKSSS all those “1 year progress” around TH-cam had really put me down, I was so happy to hear what had to say in the end. You’re amazing by the way 👏🏻
I'm on week 2! Good to know that I'm able to keep up. I've played bass guitar for over 20 years so I have a headstart. thanks for the content!
Great tutorial for a begginer like me..
Thanks for sharing...
Thank you so much for those videos! I bought my ukulele yesterday and today I’m practicing it with your awesome videos! :D
Yaaaaay!!!! Welcome to the ukulele community!! ❤️❤️❤️
U r doin an amazing job for all ukelele learners❤️ God bless🤗
Ok. So I've owned my uke for 3 years. Tuned it a few times. Heard playing uke was easier if you played guitar before but I've been afraid to try to learn new fingerings for chords. Bit played thru this with all 20 chords, night one. NOW, I get it. Barred chords pretty easy when you've played guitar - even if I wasn't good at barred chords. Now, to get calluses back? Thanks. Will print out the chords and out them everywhere so k can start going to the free group at the library I now live near. 😁 The library group sent me the link to this vid btw. Happy!
I started learning from your channel. You teach basics the best and know exactly how to teach beginners like me. It has been more than a week now and I can actually read chords now and can play several full songs thanks to your teaching. I always follow your don't look and try to sing while strumming. Also always do stretching and proper posture. It helps a lot since I have this problem with my left shoulder. It helps stop bad habits while praying the uke. I'm really thankful for your teachings especially these times. Helps me take out my mind from sad things. I will continue to learn more each day as I go through all of your videos. God bless.
Bernadette, I love this video! Thank you for it! I love Gm!!! I think Massachusetts by The Bee Gees starts with is chord! I am a huge fan of them!
Aww 🥰 thank you so much, Belle!
Good pointers. I got my first ukalele today!! Yes. I'm 45 and wanted to try playing my very first instrument.
"Those are a pretty amount of chords to get get you started" And here I am thinking I will be fine with 4 first chords I learned in my first-month :D (C,Am, F, G is the progression I stuck with for a few weeks) I will be printing the rest to memorise them. Surprisingly E was pretty easy for me( i read the comments before trying and was scared already :D ). I can deal with distance and skipping a fret, what I am struggling with is a grip like G, or G7 where fingers are close and I can not maintain the shape of ( C ) finger grip and constant push down a sting bellow :(
Also I have never did anything with music in my life but is so rewarding to be able to make a sound and actually notice, when something is off of when you produce a music our of a few chords
Thank you! I have a tiny ukulele and really big hands, your alternate ways to play chords was very useful. Thank you!
You rock!!!!! Thank you so much for your help!!!! I just came across your Channel and i love it! THANK you for the help ❤🤙😊🤙😄🤙😄🤙😄❤❤❤❤
Possible video series: "Playing in the key of XYZ"
From basic to advanced, cover the I,IV and V chords (e.g. C,F,G), then the minor chords in the key (Dm,Em,Am). Depending on how long/thorough you want to make the video, you can add the vii diminished (Bdim) chord, some seven chords (C7,G7), alternate chord shapes.
If you like the format you can do all twelve keys, or you can stop when the keys get too obscure for your audience. Would serve as nice general lessons for a certain level of student, but also a great reference for people trying to learn a favorite song in a weird key, e.g.
I would watch you what ever you teach...🤩
Thank you! Still having trouble with Barred chords but getting there. Tonight my fingers were sore but in a good way. Thank you!
Thanks! Nice little lesson for newby ukulele players like me..., was tickled to see you playing an Enya ukulele.., I bought a solid wood mahogany Enya that will be delivered on Thursday!
For some reason, I really enjoyed the many "look up!"'s! Felt more like a class instead of a video that I was following along to!
Hi I'm getting my first ukulele tomorrow. I'm really excited but I'm nervous that I'll be bad at playing it but I wanted to try it out. Some videos I've watched are so confusing! But I like how you explained the chords and the shape that your hand needs to be in. I think it will help:)
Very helpful miss.thank you so much😊😊😁
I am just 11 years old. I want to learn how to play ukulele this is only my 2nd day of learning so as you can probably guess, I am terrible at all of these cords. But I will learn. I just need practice.
Great, patient and encouraging video 👍
The most attractive music teacher on u tube im a very new beginner i like your style of teaching and subscribed to your channel hope you can teach me how to play i have a concert ukulele and im ready to learn.
This is soo easy to follow!! It’s really helpful that you said “look up” like I’m there cause I actually looked up and followed through!! Lol
Thank you so much ,you teach so easly
Thank you for being so encouraging! 🙏
Definitely the best ukulele tutorial I've watched! I've learned a lot from this one video. Thanks!
Please help me with the B minor cord. I'm always having trouble with the bottom string!
Aahhhhh the e chord. I dodged it for so long until I realized that I had to learn it. It’s been six months and I don’t regret it. 😁❤️❤️
Heyab Shishay Yaaaaay!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Glad you learned it now!!!!
Thanks millions. Great job.
I'm buying my first ever ukulele (a kala ka-s) next week after almost a year of wanting one, and I'm so impatient that I took a piece of cardboard, tied 4 pieces of string on it and drew lines across, so I could practice the chords and not just watch other people play songs XD hopefully when It'll arrive I'll be able to learn hoe to play it more easily!
This is really helpful thanks AngelFace!
Thanks for this amazing video.
This is an awesome video to get the basic chords to play a lot of songs! I’ve been sticking with about 12 out of your 20 but now I’m going to push myself to learn the rest... and like the others, the darn E chord is a Nasty one! Again, thanks for the awesome videos! Without your help I couldn’t sell any ukes in the music store I work in!😎
Nice, practising this every day now. BTW, The Beatles song is not titled She was just seventeen, but "I saw her standing there". Keep on doing those amazing tutorials, great for us, the beginners, thanks.
Thank you this actually helped a lot
This is my second day playing ukelele, very helpful for a 13yrs old me. Thank you!❤️
I’ve been watching your theory and guitar workshops. I like to play E as 4447.
So are such an amazing teacher
