‘Look up’ makes me laugh every time! Great instruction as always. I’ve been playing uke for 2.5 years and avoided Bb with all my might lol. I finally conquered it out of necessity but it took hours of practice to do so.

I swapped to ukulele after a skateboarding injury limited my motion a lot and I almost quit because even after a few years it still feels like a lot of strain. Seeing the struggle you go through makes me realize maybe its not as much of a limit as ive been thinking. It helped me heal this far maybe its time to push it i can get all these chords if i push through the pain and maybe ill gain some movementback. Keep up the positivity

the way she says look up is so helpful and it feels like I'm not watching her through a screen. Something about her makes me feel so comfortable the ways she waits it so weird but cool at the same time, Thank youu

This is one of the most useful videos ever! I just came home from a jam with a bunch of guitarists, and I wish I had done this lesson first. Year 2 for me, it's about time to memorize these.

My retirement resolutions!!! God bless! - Dave
When you do a chord with open strings, you can think of the nut as your index barring a "virtual fret" before the nut. You can move these patterns up the fretboard as long as you bare the strings with the index (like you're moving the nut higher on the fretboard, which is exactly what you do when using a capo by the way, you keep a shape but you get a different chord). Look at Am and Bm or C7 and D7 for instance. They are basically the exact same shapes. It's like you moved the nut to the 2nd fret (because the B is 2 semi-tones higher than the A, same thing with D versus C). Nice lesson, I'll focus on these chords for a start. Thank you.
Got my ukulele yesterday. You've already helped me so much!! Thank you!😘 I LOVE how you say "look up". Had me giggling because it was like you could see me, and I did, indeed, look up. Lol
Because I've been playing casually for so long, I've luckily learned all of these chords! I'm really trying to get more serious with ukulele. I want to be a better player than I am. I feel that making sure I go over basics is a good foundation, since I never really learned properly previously.
The Way She Says "Look Up" While im Practicing the Chord For myself makes me think this Video already planned what im Doing (It helps Me Look to the Tutorial and I LOVE it)
Hi Ms. B and thank you for the lesson. This will keep me and my dog, Mollie, busy. When I start playing, Mollie comes into the room then promptly goes to sleep. I think she likes the sound of the ukulele.
I actually agree with the way YOU started out. I feel I need to build confidence, and that will make it easier for me to move up later. To build confidence, I decided to stick to 4-6 chords, do them really really well - try diff ways to play them, strumming etc - learn several songs, perform them for friends in casual gatherings... and I am SURE naturally I will move on at a certain point.
Just got a ukulele three days ago and feel like I've already learned so much thanks to your videos!! :) I love when you say "look up" and remind to breathe, and when you share little tips and remind about best practices. I started learning from your channel. You teach basics the best and know exactly how to teach beginners like me. It has been more than a week now and I can actually read chords now and can play several full songs thanks to your teaching. I always follow your don't look and try to sing while strumming. Also always do stretching and proper posture. It helps a lot since I have this problem with my left shoulder. It helps stop bad habits while praying the uke. You are awesome!! My first Ukulele song was from your channel. And I am so glad that you are just not a musician but A teacher too. I love the way you teach. 🧡🧡
Thank you Bernadette! I started learning ukulele 3 days after you introduced the 30-day challenge in 2018. You've been instrumental in my learning as a beginner. I'd love to see more videos on slightly challenging, unusual sounding, or interesting chords to play. I'm a fan of improvising and jamming, so the more chords I learn the better I can get at coming up with my own chord progressions.
Hey Candice! Thank you so much for the video idea. I'd love to make a video about fun and interesting chords!!! I'll start putting a list together :) Thank you so much for choosing me to be your teacher and for being my student ❤️❤️❤️
I've been given a Tenor Ukulele for my 70th birthday and I am finding your 30 day Ukulele Challenge really useful and informative ( and Fun!). One of the things I really like are the flashcard cutouts that you have included just after the video 7 page. Do you have cutouts for the 20 most used chords that I can also turn into flashcards?
I'm watching this without my ukulele and STILL look up when you say that hahaha! I really like your teaching style and the fact you left in your little mistakes... You're right, it's not easy! Also we both have similar favourite chords! Fm is SO beautiful! I love all the 7ths... C7, G7, D7, Dm7, E7, A7 (especially those two together)B7... They are all so pretty sounding!
THANKSSS all those “1 year progress” around TH-cam had really put me down, I was so happy to hear what had to say in the end. You’re amazing by the way 👏🏻
"Those are a pretty amount of chords to get get you started" And here I am thinking I will be fine with 4 first chords I learned in my first-month :D (C,Am, F, G is the progression I stuck with for a few weeks) I will be printing the rest to memorise them. Surprisingly E was pretty easy for me( i read the comments before trying and was scared already :D ). I can deal with distance and skipping a fret, what I am struggling with is a grip like G, or G7 where fingers are close and I can not maintain the shape of ( C ) finger grip and constant push down a sting bellow :( Also I have never did anything with music in my life but is so rewarding to be able to make a sound and actually notice, when something is off of when you produce a music our of a few chords
Well I was Looking on how to learn how to Play ukulele and I saw your video How easy to teach, I will fallow all your videos Thank you for taking time to teach us :-)
Possible video series: "Playing in the key of XYZ" From basic to advanced, cover the I,IV and V chords (e.g. C,F,G), then the minor chords in the key (Dm,Em,Am). Depending on how long/thorough you want to make the video, you can add the vii diminished (Bdim) chord, some seven chords (C7,G7), alternate chord shapes. If you like the format you can do all twelve keys, or you can stop when the keys get too obscure for your audience. Would serve as nice general lessons for a certain level of student, but also a great reference for people trying to learn a favorite song in a weird key, e.g.
I'm buying my first ever ukulele (a kala ka-s) next week after almost a year of wanting one, and I'm so impatient that I took a piece of cardboard, tied 4 pieces of string on it and drew lines across, so I could practice the chords and not just watch other people play songs XD hopefully when It'll arrive I'll be able to learn hoe to play it more easily!
Thank you this is a very useful video. Couple of months and I'll have been playing for a year and know how to play most of these chords, however struggle a little transitioning between some of them slowly getting better with repetition. any advice with transitions would be welcome. Been practising daily since I started with only three days off over Christmas. FYI I play D7 using the same fingers as D but using my little finger on the third fret which makes it way easier. E is a tough one to hold and does cause some pain in the old arm. Learning to strum the Johnny Cash strum opened up my strumming hand to so many different ways to strum, I would recommend beginners to try and learn that.
Hi! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. Question: can you give me examples of chords you struggle transitioning with? If I know these chord switches, I can make a video about this 🤗🤗
@@BernadetteTeachesMusic Thanks for your reply. Going to have a little practice and make two lists, one for chords I can easily transition to and then a list with the remaining chords that give me a little trouble. I'll be back.
@@BernadetteTeachesMusic After much testing E Aghhh, Em (can play this after a C when played with my ring finger but playing after G or D etc transition is very slow), and Bm (Might just about have this one figured out whilst trying to work out which chords I have trouble with lol)
This is an awesome video to get the basic chords to play a lot of songs! I’ve been sticking with about 12 out of your 20 but now I’m going to push myself to learn the rest... and like the others, the darn E chord is a Nasty one! Again, thanks for the awesome videos! Without your help I couldn’t sell any ukes in the music store I work in!😎
I've been playing uke since December, and honestly i play for hours a day, I didn't know people really struggled with E or barre chords until reading the comments on this, I'm a bit surprised
2:50 I wasn’t looking at her at the time and when she said look up it scared me... Then I went to try to play the note bc I’m impatient she said look up again and I was creeped out 😆
Becky H. Hi Becky!! Yes, I think that’s the song I used to help us face our fear of E!! Thank you so much for letting me know that was the video that helped you!
Ok. So I've owned my uke for 3 years. Tuned it a few times. Heard playing uke was easier if you played guitar before but I've been afraid to try to learn new fingerings for chords. Bit played thru this with all 20 chords, night one. NOW, I get it. Barred chords pretty easy when you've played guitar - even if I wasn't good at barred chords. Now, to get calluses back? Thanks. Will print out the chords and out them everywhere so k can start going to the free group at the library I now live near. 😁 The library group sent me the link to this vid btw. Happy!
Hi Bernadette. I enjoy all your videos! Thank you for making it easier for us beginners/intermediate students, your pace is perfect. I have noticed lately your videos are a bit more hollow or echoey sounding. The big chair helps some but more fabric someplace to absorb some of that echo might help. A bit like what they do in restaurants to help with crowd noise. I hope you take this as positive constructive help. In no way do I mean to insult or be disrespectful. Thanks again for all your help. Cheers! Jess

Well I was Looking on how to learn how to Play ukulele and I saw your video How easy to teach, I will fallow all your videos Thank you for taking time to teach us :-)
For some reason, I really enjoyed the many "look up!"'s! Felt more like a class instead of a video that I was following along to!
This was a very good lesson. I am able to do most of the cords with no problem. You are really helping me a lot....! Thanks Bernadette....!
Wow, Albert! That's awesome ❤️❤️❤️
I am proud of you
Possible video series: "Playing in the key of XYZ"
From basic to advanced, cover the I,IV and V chords (e.g.
Thank you so much for those videos! I bought my ukulele yesterday and today I’m practicing it with your awesome videos! :D
Yaaaaay!!!! Welcome to the ukulele community!! ❤️❤️❤️
This really improved my ukulele skills😊😊
Aahhhhh the e chord. I dodged it for so long until I realized that I had to learn it. It’s been six months and I don’t regret it. 😁❤️❤️
Heyab Shishay Yaaaaay!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Glad you learned it now!!!!
Thank you for this. This is a great resource. I’m going thru these every morning
Good pointers. I got my first ukalele today!! Yes. I'm 45 and wanted to try playing my very first instrument.
Great tutorial for a begginer like me..
Thanks for sharing...
I learned 4 chords yesterday. Here to learn more today. Day 2.
How it going now?
Thank you! Still having trouble with Barred chords but getting there. Tonight my fingers were sore but in a good way. Thank you!
This is my second day playing ukelele, very helpful for a 13yrs old me. Thank you!❤️
I'm buying my first ever ukulele (a kala ka-s) next week after almost a year of wanting one, and I'm so impatient that I took a piece of cardboard, tied 4 pieces of string on it and drew lines across, so I could practice the chords and not just watch other people play songs XD hopefully when It'll arrive I'll be able to learn hoe to play it more easily!
I'm on week 2! Good to know that I'm able to keep up. I've played bass guitar for over 20 years so I have a headstart. thanks for the content!
This is so helpful! Thank you for making this video!
Thanks for enlightening us ,with your cord expressions! You are my favorite uke teacher on U tube !
Thank you! I have a tiny ukulele and really big hands, your alternate ways to play chords was very useful. Thank you!
I would watch you what ever you teach...🤩
2:50 I wasn’t looking at her at the time and when she said look up it scared me... Then I went to try to play the note bc I’m impatient she said look up again and I was creeped out 😆
This is soo easy to follow!! It’s really helpful that you said “look up” like I’m there cause I actually looked up and followed through!! Lol
I have been told not to use my thumb, but for some of these chords it helps out a lot if you’re fast enough with it
I loved this video! Every time she said "look up" it was like she knew I was watching my hands lol.
Excellent video! It's because of you that I can play an E chord. I think it was when you taught Someone Like You by Adelle. Thanks!
Becky H.
Happy!
I love the way she teaches thank you this was like HELLA HELPFUL ❤️
Bernadette, I love this video! Thank you for it! I love Gm!!! I think Massachusetts by The Bee Gees starts with is chord! I am a huge fan of them!
Aww 🥰 thank you so much, Belle!
Thank you so much for making this video😃 I just got my ukulele for christmas and this will help out so much.
Oh, that's a wonderful Christmas present. Who gave it to you? 🤗🤗
Bernadette Teaches Music my parents gave me it to me and I love it so much.
MikPink11 aww!! What a great gift!!!
I’ve been watching your theory and guitar workshops. I like to play E as 4447.
Definitely the best ukulele tutorial I've watched! I've learned a lot from this one video. Thanks!
Thank you this actually helped a lot
Thanks millions. Great job.
Cheers!
Jess
God Bless you women, I’m so excited to play the ukulele now ❤️❤️❤️
Hi I'm getting my first ukulele tomorrow. I'm really excited but I'm nervous that I'll be bad at playing it but I wanted to try it out. Some videos I've watched are so confusing! But I like how you explained the chords and the shape that your hand needs to be in. I think it will help:)
I love to hear you saying Ready go. You are so qute
Thank you so much ,you teach so easly
Ok! Ok! I am getting the message loud and clear!!! Learn Bar Chords! 😁. I actually was able to get more than one string to ring on ALL of them... None of them sounded good yet... But 🤷. Progress! Thank you as always for great tools 😊
