    For the record, tomatos will continue to ripen around other tomatos due gases they naturally give off as they age, but containing them in a sealed container will cause rot. Potatos, on the other hand, need to be away from light or they will turn green and try to re-grow, which results in them converting their stored starch into growing bits (roots and stems), with said bits being toxic.

    • @jameshill2450
      @jameshill2450 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So if your potatoes start to grow stuff (and you cut that stuff off) they'll be less starchy?

    • @HansLemurson
      @HansLemurson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jameshill2450 When they start growing shoots, they start to lose starch and become more mushy and shrivelled and start producing more defensive poisons. Since starch is the entire point of potatoes, that's why we try to keep them in the dark!

    everyone's trying to make Dwarf Fortress more accessible the wong way. It's not about making mechanics simpler. It's about making the time go faster and UI be less obnoxious.

    • @warrenjehosephat231
      @warrenjehosephat231 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      UI is the big one. Not sure on time going faster, unless you just mean having like more game speeds. Honestly a lot of games having months being turned into seasons, or even a day or two being a season, kind of annoy me.
      But the absence of Z levels in this game absolutely floors me. I don't need like a hundred of them or however many are in DF, but I'd like the ability to build a two story building if I like?

    • @firebornliger

      Yeah. It isn't that DF has super complex mechanics, its that they're generally obfuscated by bad UI.

    Digging out a tunnel would generally leave you with a higher volume of matter than the volume of the tunnel you cleared out. Higher volume because it's likely going to end up less densely packed then wherever you dug it out from. Having to deal with this dynamic is something mining has to deal with. Setting up a system to have to extract the matter from your tunneling and find someplace to put it (perhaps for even further processing) could make for any interesting gameplay mechanic in any game about tunneling, mining and dwarves.

    Been playing this a bunch recently (kickstarter supporter). Splat might be on an earlier alpha as I noticed a few differences (new update this week)? Anyway game is super fun, though once you've built everything its hard to want to keep going. I never noticed fire being an issue in my game. I also wouldn't stockpile all of the rock outside, you are in a mine, mason workshop will get to it eventually. This wastes so much time hauling. Additionally toss a door on your earlier bedroom and you'll get a big "Enclosed bedroom" bonus to happiness. Finally I found the game super satisfying to achieve brewing beer. Anyway there is a few bugs. Looking forward to how the game progresses.

    My dream game is dwarf fortress made into a graphical game, not just a tile replacer, but i just don't see it ever happening. There is a ton of graphical "dwarf fortress" like games and they aren't terrible but just severely lack the depth and detail that makes dwarf fortress absolutely amazing but then i rarely play dwarf fortress due to the just not wanting to deal with it's interface and graphical issues plus the complexity of it. I haven't played it in years so i'd probably have a lot to re-learn. If it could some how be made with graphics and a good interface it would be so much easier to jump in and deal with the complex stuff but oh wells. I just wish that modern companies would try a hand at making a ridiculously complex game with tons of mechanics but in a graphical interface one day. No company seems ot have the balls to do it but if they did they could be like the next Minecraft in my opinion. It doesn't necessarily need to be super hard like dwarf fortress either, just have a crap ton of randomness and complexity that makes each playthrough insanely different. The stories i have had from playing dwarf fortress is unlike any other game I've played, the Drama and craziness that happens is insane and it's all completely random which is crazy, it's not scripted. The problem with modern games that use procedural content and it fails in my opinion is due to lack of complexity in the game, procedural generation needs complexity to make it fun, otherwise you mind as well just hand make everything for a better experience in less complex games.

    One feature Rimworld (and every other colony game I've seen) is lacking and that I feel would put this on the map is multiple vertical levels. Since the game is about dwarves, it would be cool if you could actually "dig too deep and too greedily". Have the option to dig down which opens up a new level of resources, but might also include tunnels, underground rivers and creatures (natural and/or eldritch) that consider dwarves to be exceptionally tasty.

I disagreed with you on a few points here for the first time in...all of your videos! :) It seemed like your review at the end really zoomed in on how derivative of Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress this is. This looked like a good clone of Dwarf Fortress pre-Z axis but with Rimworld graphics and interface (the pinched walls and limbless sprites also made popular in Prison Architect). But that's about as far as the comparisons to Rimworld need to go. This would make a great entry level game for people that have rejected DF for the graphics and I'm glad someone made a bridging game like this. Kudos to the dev for making a product of love.

Light makes it less likely for insects to spawn in that area and cold temperatures decrease the chances further. Of course you want your pawns to be warm, but you might be able to manipulate the temperature in areas your pawns aren't often. Also, you can dig a small room in a mountain somewhere far away from your base and try to make a "Sweet spot" for insects. When an infestation event happens there's an increased likelihood for them to spawn there instead (even though you might consider this to be a bit exploity).

      Feel the same way. Theres ssoooooo many colony/civilization building games. Even before rumored there were a TON. Rimworld just made even more developers jump on the genre. This game looks really good..but what would make me stick with this and not something else like Rimworld, or Gnomoria which I have played for a while.

    It looked like the building menu had an option to select the material and type for what you were building some of the furniture out of. When you built the cauldron it had 'Metal' as the material and 'Any' as the type. I'm pretty sure you can build furniture out of specific types of stone or wood to fit your desired aesthetic. I don't know if it changes the graphic, but you could always find out.

    by now this kind of game is just one of many. seen like 4-5 games like this already, some pretty "polished". its time they bring in smth new, smth fresh.
    for example:
    - would love to see some 3d version of this. the "planning rooms/ mining commands etc" would still stay in this top down bird fiew, but the rest would be first person style and 3d. aka you can walk around in the rooms you build and fight/ craft / collect yourself. im thinking of smth as in "genesis alpha one" (another game which does this very well but with a spaceship).
    - some dungeons that can spawn which you can explore
    - some enemy nest that settle somewhere that grow and become more dangerous if you dont destroy it
    - some trap/tech/ tower defence elements to defend strategically.
    - more layers so you can actually dig pretty deep down and get new materials for better equip, but also stronger enemies
    - some weather conditions like storms and floods you have to plan for (rooms that dont flood here and there for dwarves to run to when a flood fills the whole mountain), some tech skilltree taht allows you to build pumps to get the water out again), etc.
    just some new, more complex stuff and things to do / think about while planning your rooms and progress etc.

    So if I was going to summarize your closing thoughts: This is missing many of the features that already exist in good games, and has no unique qualities that let it stand out on its own.
    Maybe it's just not in there yet, or maybe it just isn't going to have anything to make it stand out.

      Nah DF was more fun when it was 2D. You dig "down" by going south. Classic DF had you reach preeeetty interesting stuff this way. Seasonal cave river floods that you depended on for farming an awesome mechanic.

    • @ben5056
      @ben5056 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@isitanos that sounds cool if a bit confusing. You can still create farms by flooding. My main point regardless of how it’s implemented, was that a dwarf that doesn’t dig down ain’t a dwarf :)

      That was all down to Splatty not knowing that a "granary" contains grain and seeds. He acknowledges this himself. So, no bug there. But I agree that tool tips would make things easier to grasp quicker.
