I honestly didn't believe you would remember Archrebel after all this time! What has it been? 2 years? Thank you so much for taking it for a spin. Just one quick tip: make strategic use of power shots. They consume twice as much ammo but will mostly go through these critters' armor, as they grant a minimum damage equal to half the weapon's maximum damage. Again, thank you so much for playing it, and know that I'm the only person developing the game. :)
Splat is my dealer for finding me my next dopamine fix. Now I am buzzing, waiting to get off work and find this gem and get it on my gaming rig.
@@Hawkido Thank you! Please, don't rush through the tutorial, if you play it. Best of luck commander! o7
you do such good work, it cant be ignored!
@@ulfsire1845 My dude! Thanks for chimming in. Thanks for the high praise. The man that created 'Path of Achra' ladies and gents!
Love the graphics! Kinda reminds me of an old C64 game called Starquake! :)
They managed to have a really interesting colourful organic look, even though it was tile based.
Very cool!
HQ: We need your squad to go in and rescue some civilians from swarms of highly durable ravenous aliens.
Squad: Roger HQ, what is our loadout for this dangerous mission.
HQ: Pistols and 12 bullets each, move out.
😅 Mission failed successfully, sir!
Considering squadmates shooting skill they are of low value to the HQ, so there is no need to give them decent equipment and waste ammuniton on them 😀
The squad that is aiding Bravo was returning to HQ to resupply and was running low on ammo, so they only had their secondary weapons available when they got the distress call and moved in to help. This is the part of the mission's description SplatterCat skipped. :)
@@UlarisBadler yeah that's what the space government wants you to believe!
@@hic_tus Haha! Fair!
Wow, hearing someone mention Rebelstar and Laser Squad really caught me off guard..... instantly teleported me back to my youth.
Nice Rebelstar II avatar! :D
I was teleported back to the Ahoy video about XCom
I love how the South Park reference just went straight over his head lol- fun looking game!
I think that three-way fight at 18 minutes or so was a definite "everybody gangsta until the xenomorphs spit acid" moment. Basically zero seconds from fully-automatic-laser-death squad to screaming goo pile.
OMG this looks EXACTLY like REBELSTAR or LASERSQUAD on ZX from Julian Gollop, the father of Turn based tactics games... Wishlisting
Yap! Rebelstar is the main driving inspiration here. Thanks!
Was trying to remember what game it instantly brought to mind, think it was Rebelstar Raiders where you took over bases / spacecraft and there were droids along with some troops having heavy weapons and some with light sabres. Was a great game for the time.
I love following you for finding gems, but I gotta say, this was a blast to watch. Your wit, with your strategy really made the story better given it's stylistic constraints (which honestly are cool). Love your vids dude.
observation.
When you aim, it seams that you are aiming not at the creature, but at a specific point, and any shot that continue past the intended target can still hit the next one over.
So it might be good to aim a little to the side, if there is another enemy on that side. That way the two enemies together occupy greater area of the cone, increasing overall hit chance.
Exactly this! You will want to place the aim point in a place where the bullet's potential trajectories cover as many target end-points as possible. Well, spotted. o7
Correct and this is how the age old games worked too. It can make sense to aim at the centre of the farthest enemy if it's not too critical to hit the closest one and doing so would mean the closest enemy is likely hit.
Phoenix point strats
The UI on the right hand side is REALLY crisp. Nice, slow animations, very clean lines.
Thank you. A lot of work went into the UI to maintain a retro feel while staying functional. Thank you for noticing it! o7
Yes! It's been a pleasure to follow Archrebel's progress on Twitter for years, and this beautiful, fleshed-out tactics game is finally coming together! Can't wait for the full game.
Thank you, Arthur! o7
As Splat said, I really hope there is a way to move multiple units at once during travel mode cuz once you add extra guys, that looks really tedious. I'd almost rather have a "Set Formation" screen that pops up when a battle starts instead of moving each person individually during travel.
All that said, I really love the look and style of this game!
Thanks. You can, unfortunatelly SplatterCat didn't use it. In fact, there are some critical mechanics he missed, which is totally fine. The game has a learning curve:

o7
@@UlarisBadler He does that some times. Thanks for clearing it up!
didn't expect to see psycho sid vicious in a space game
Funny listening to Splatty narrating this adventure, he clearly was really into this! He does luv himself these gunz-games... The sound effects were very good in my opinion.
The sound effects play a huge part on the experience. I'm glad you noticed it. :)
Definitely Laser Squad, which was "prequel" to XCom.
Came here to read this! Such a great game..
Remember Rebelstar?!
@@nickbowers My friend, who had ZX Spectrum back then, also had rich library for it :) I remember it, although very vividly, becuse I was too young to understand english - but I think this was first true squad based game I´ve ever seen! :)
The look of this game reminds me of playing "Sun Tzu's Art of War" on a computer made in 1981 - which I know, because the internal clock of the computer kept resetting to Jan 1, 1981, every time you turned it on - I was playing with in high school, back in 1998->2000. I couldn't get very far in the game, because there was no in-game tutorial, the manual for the game was nowhere to be seen, & the game - which was on a 5-1/4" floppy disk - was in real-time with no ability to issue commands while the game is paused. There also wasn't any way of telling what the game is even supposed to be about. So, the learning curve was steep, to say the least.
But then, the original XCom's weren't much better. I remember playing the underwater one & not knowing how to even shoot the aliens. I even managed - somehow - to throw the weapon itself at the alien, which - as you might imagine - didn't do much damage at all.
Kind of being triggered right now, not gonna lie.
This looks amazing. I love that there’s kind of a revival of the Commodore 64 aesthetic. Altho this looks a little more DOSSY? Kinda 256-color, 320x240? Even tho it looks like more color and more pixels, not that it matters.
Thanks! There's no color palette limit, it is actually running at 32bit with a base resolution of 640x360. The game is heavily inspired in ZX-Spectrum's rebelstar looks but it doesn't stays confined within its limits. o7
@@UlarisBadler it’s gorgeous! I love the aesthetic so much
@@JesseDylanMusic Thanks! I hope you enjoy the demo as well.
The "new" x-coms are actually pretty great. Especially if you mod them with Long War and Long War of The Chosen, and all the cosmetic mods.
24:35 "I'm not trying to be a liquid right now."
Such a cool project, wonderful to see it finally reaches a bigger audience than our little gamedev circle 🙌
Thank you, Oz! For staying with and teaching me so much about the gamedev community, and for sharing your own experience. :)
Everything you said in the intro had me hooked! I Loved laser squad as a kid. I just wish this was a little more graphically modern. Xenonauts is retro but still looks good.
Archrebel puts Laser Squad on steroids. If you liked LS, this might be a game for you. Just keep in mind this is not the demo of the final version but just a playground for players to experience the mechanics. o7
I appreciate someone is reviewing these games. Great content.
This is exactly the sort of game I love... I definitely can't wait to try the demo!
Used to play Laser Squad (and Warlord 2) hot-seat at a friend with a PC and an Atari, fun times, big nostalgic vibes.
Reminds me of Laser Sqaud :)
Wow, this was well done. Can't wait for it to come out. It really has that clean retro look.
Thanks. I know the retro style is not for everyone; I'm glad you are on board with it.
I am no good at games like this, but if it ends up on a platform like Steam, I will certainly do what I can to support the developer.
Yes, the goal is having it on Steam. I think it's easier than it looks. Turn-based gives you all the time you need to make decisions. It's a matter of understanding the mechanics, and the more you play it the better you get at it.
@@UlarisBadler yeah, i do much better with turn based tactic games. my biggest problem is tunnel vision, and not being able to break out of it when something is not working. LOL :D
Nice to see Sid Vicious back on stage again... with his... 'er... pistol ;)
Been following this one on Twitter for a long, long time now and I'm so happy that there's a demo available! And even happier that you not only tried it out, but also really liked it :D Thanks for covering it on your channel!
Thank you for staying with me this long. Cheers!
Aww man. Wanted to watch this a bit longer. Looks fun and a call back to the early 90s.
I, myself, call it a love letter to the early tactics games. The demo is really long and I also think SplatterCat didn't want to spoil it that much. haha. :)
@@UlarisBadlergreat job! I will definitely check this out. I love the font used for the text!
Splatty, what kind of video will you do for your 1 millionth subscriber celebration? I think it would cool if you made another channel and you also reviewed TV shows or movies .
I've played a bit of XCOM, and then XCOM2 and Templar Battleforce. But open world? That's kinda interesting
It's not really open world, but will feature a kind of dynamic campaign with missions you will enroll that will follow a storyline with impactful choices. You will also get a maintenance phase where you put wounded to rest and recruit new units. o7
He's talking about the original xcom not the 2012 remake.
@@doltBmB Yeah I played that too
make sure to check out pioneer space simulation as well
This game looks SUPER fun. I was sad to run to Steam and see it without a current release date... I want it NOW :(
Wait, this is reincarnaction of Rebel Star from ZX Spectrum! Even names are correct.
You will have all names from all characters from the original Rebelstar in it. :)
Damn the music in this is insane
Thanks, man! o7
@@UlarisBadler You're quite welcome! Is the soundtrack available somewhere?
This is Rebelstar remake :)
Ngl, him missing boxes makes me fume 😂
Those supply boxes started a quest to haul them towards the enemy base, he wanted to divert to save the other squad first as his people were already encumbered, and he didn't want to be dragging them around while doing other things.
@@Hawkido This! :)
I really wish they'd make this demo publicly available, I'd love to test it.
"Rebelstar 2" today?
А чего, великолепная была игра для своего времени.
Really cool game. I like the graphics and the gameplay. The sounds are on top.
Thank you. A lot of work went into the sounds. o7
Omg they killed Kenny! YOU BASTARDS, 😂😂😂
Is fucking Laser Squad for commodore 64 :)
That was my first thought too. Still remember that tough mission with lots of vegetation. I think I never managed to beat it.
I would say Amiga's 16bit Laser Squad version is probably the closest one to Archrebel, even though it wouldn't be able to do a fraction of what Archrebel does. o7
ARCHREBEL... interesting! Demo it is!
Oh wow, this is nearly here now? I gotta get ready!
Checklist.
Spectrum 48k replica with rubber keys?
Dodgy cassette player for the tape-based game load?
Cheap desk, no chair, just sit on the bed?
Coca-Cola and crisps and no thoughts whatsoever about arteries or diabetes?
Many, many hours of free time after school, and no stress about work and responsibilities?
Then I can truly relive the joy of playing Rebelstar 2 back in 1988!
Looks really cool.
Right away I can say that the ability to move as group out of combat (assuming out of combat happens often enough) is needed.
You can move as a group, in an out of combat, I believe SplatterCat missed that. :)
this game rmeinds me of a 2d version of battle isle 4: incubation which you can get off GOG in the battle isles pack. Great game. Will get this day one release.
Welp I didn't know this existed and love everything I've seen so far, which means spending more money at some point. Thanks a lot Splat. You know, I have five kids and still haven't really forgiven you for that vampire survivor thing and it's associated clones
"Laser squad" was selling point for me. Pause at 43 seconds and went to find game. Nice review :D
Splat you have become my fave YT game channel over the last week. Almost every game you cover looks interesting and I wish I had time to play them all!
Laser Squad! thats going back 30 years :)
Reminds me of Wizard's Crown and Shard of Spring.
OMG it feels soo good to see the game review of a guy I am actively following on twitter! :D This game should be waaay more popular already!
Oh my god! That font gave me a visceral blast of nostalgia. I agree, very Commodore 64.
been following this game for a long time, dev is super cool
This game is OG X-Com. If you've never played the OG (EDIT: Sounds like you have), I recommend trying it with Open X-Com Extended and trying some of the incredible mods, like "The X-Com Files" which adds an absolutely incredible amount of content to the original game. You start two years early as an X-Files-like agency investigating strange happenings in the lead up to the invasion, and securing more funding and authority from the Council. You earn the right to be called X-Com then kick the crap out of the invaders... and so much more.
If this game blew your socks off you should absolutely try it's better looking daddy.
Poor Kenny. He always gets the short end of the stick LOL
excellent!
I played RebelStar on Amstrad long time ago... and it was a blast.
Single player didn't have much of a story but we played with friend versus each other many times.
I called one of my characters in Ultima Online "RebelStar" had such good memories of it. :)
Thanks for bringing this title to my attention, its looking great so far!
It's been three times as long since the first use of They Killed Kenny (1997, 27 years) as between that episode and Laser Squad (1988, 9 years), just to put things into perspective.
Hey. they even took trooper names from Rebelstar. Neat.
All unit names from the original Rebelstar will be featured in Archrebel. o7
YI-GI-GI-GI-GI-GI-GIIIIII with the chainsword
Oh god.. just hire an art team and put some effort in. You've done all this great work to make a game, yet it looks like a game made in 1985... pass!
comment for the comment god!
Poor Kenny 😢😢
One thing the original XCOM teaches you is that when it says 95% chance to hit, it means 70%, and when it says 80% it's like 30%, and when it's below that, it's 0%.
Haha! You will find it differently here; especially when you can aim in a way that if you miss you can hit other targets. o7
I really get nostalgic Amiga 500 feel of this. Did the game come in a golden box with the letters TSR on it ?
Your initial description gave me an heart-attack .... ❤
love this game aesthetic
Man, between this and Moonring we're eating really good off of these classic reimaginings.
Thank you! I know they are not for everyone, but I'm glad there's an audience for them. o7
engagement! get that $$$$
This game gives me warm memories. It needs more attention
So is this a rebelstar followup from the spectrum?
If I had the rights, I would call it Rebelstar 3. But yeah, it's heavily inspired in Rebelstar.
Greetings world
Looks like waiting for the fauna to fight it out with the enemy was the correct call. ~.^
Laser Squad? Thus I am summoned.
I love the starcraft type of music
Splattercat ❤
this is awesome
I appreciate it! Thanks, man!
thanks
They even used the same names as the Julian Gollop games (Kurt Levine etc.) Anyone remember Leader Kremin? Or those annoying little Zeeker robots?
All unit names from the original Rebelstar will be featured in Archrebel. o7
Man of Culture 90s XCom
The chainsword noise you made should be your vid intro dialogue
Honestly that first encounter looked so tedious it turned me off to this game.
Formation on traveling mode is a must i think, if the dev can make different classes for the soldiers that you can like level them up to that would be cool, also make a spaceship hub kind of thing to pick missions and do research with stuff you grab on missions i think it would complement the game well
When does this game come out? I really want to play it!
visually this looks 100% like mech engineer
Thank you splat! That went straight to the wishlist.
o7
Kenny ? too many South Park vibes.....
This looks super fun!
Looks cool but I boy oh boy do I dislike the AP system.
*DEVELOPER* please put walk cycle animations in the little dudes. It will add livelyness and some pleasantry to the game. That is all.
The required work and time to develop that wouldn't pay off. Especially when I'm doing all by myself, and I mean all.
@@UlarisBadler Ohhhkaaay.. :(
Hey Splat,
With your massive knowledge of games, do you know of Master Of Orion 2 spiritual successors? I can't find anything to scratch the itch but going back to the classic.
Stars in Shadow.
The fact you have to comment that a demo is free is sad
I misread your socks. I am disappointed.
Flora reminds me of the REAL X-COM bases.
Looks like rebelstar on zx spectrum
Unloading weapons and restacking mags would be a nice add to this.
I'm working on that feature as I type this. :)
that looks sick! good video
another damn cartoon board game....sheesh.
