Half of the video gives me the feeling "man i got to play that" and the other half gives me the feeling of "not touching that with a 10 foot pole....."
put it on my wait and see or huge discount list.
Thats what I thought just hearing They Are Billions mentioned.. which is a neat idea to mix with Dungeon Keeper. But then I saw the slow monotonous gameplay and little control of your minions.
And that is why splat is a treasure we must protect
barge pole*
@@JohnyG29nope. 10 foot pole is an old school DND Basic reference.
Honestly I think the overwhelming darkness of the map is the biggest reason I've never even been slightly tempted by this game, which otherwise looks fairly up my alley.
Also what's with each rail shape being a separate piece? Just make it automatically line up when you lay a line with a draggable tool.
Spot on.
I am still perplexed on how they thought that was a good ideal. Saves money though, when half your game is a black screen
You may judge me for that, but I think the problem is that Splat by principle refuse to add any lighting. Already past the middle of the video and about to close it off, just because he still haven't placed a single light source. I don't eve know how much they would help, but you should at least try.
Ya, splat not adding lighting is annoying.. You can actually get a perk to make lighting free too, I think the idea is suppose to add another level of planning to the town.. Cause the lighting does take up space.
I will never tire of reading your game descriptions in the title: funny, unusual, but perfectly on point.
I can understand what type of game it is before the video even starts 😄
I wonder why it seems so impossible to produce a worthy successor to Dungeon Keeper... Dwarves of course make it 10% better but I agree with a lot of your points here, especially the darkness.
Have you not heard of "war for the Overworld"? It even has the DK narrator.
@@GeryonM I have over 100 hours in WFTO. Even beat the original DK in a modded campaign in Overworld. It also came out in 2015. That's 9 years ago and there hasn't been anything since. The follow-up they made is more like Theme Hospital / Startopia.
@@GeryonMthe pacing was all wrong.
@@l0rfthe Dungeons games are supposedly quite good
@@unnamedenemy9 I like the Dungeons games but they are more like parody titles, nowhere near the dark atmosphere of Dungeon Keeper and they do play a little differently as well, way more focus on Warcraft 3 like overworld fights.
Very intriguing, love the art style and love games with dwarves of course! The bugs seem like a real pain in the butt. Thanks for spotlight!
Splat, you can use the King's "shout" on the miners to speed up productivity.
The trick to being able to select walls for "Priority" mining, with the blue color, is you have to not have any units selected and you have to right-click the walls. If you have any units selected when you try, all you can do is create the regular priority (Yellow) mining.
I think I’ve seen you show this game for two or three years. It has come a long way and I like it.
I think this is the closest thing to a negative review I've seen you do. Good to see you don't always just say everything is great!
I enjoy the channel and think I got Jupiter Hell because of watching you play that on here
> "Singing mining songs..."
Diggy, Diggy Hole!
"gold, gold gold", or how about that timeless classic "gold, gold, gold, gold" ...
A Human, a Elf and a Dwarf walk into a mine...
Moradin's beard! Another Dwarf game? I wouldn't miss this one for all the rock and stone under the mountain!
> "Guys get better when they kill guys."
You heard'em, everyone get killin'!
I get a round, round, round, round... I get around!
This seems a bit like a sequel to an older game called "Dwarfs!?" where the goal was to mine as many goodies as fast as possible before your bumbling dwarves unleashed an eventual apocalypse upon your kingdom. (the miners never stopped their diggy diggy)
Is there a mod or something for this game that makes it not so bloody dark?
Lightposts exist, he just doesnt use any.
I've played the game a few times over the years, it does feel quite clunky with some things, but the aesthetic is simply perfect. Although there are lights to be built, the light radius of buildings must be increased for a better experience, I think. Also, the focus for mining is in the right click, unless it has changed.
Splatt drops video i get happy very simple process
To bloody Dark and if Splat says Wait, I wait! ;)
It has lighting options, he just didnt use any. Personally i felt it adds a extra level of difficulty, because the light takes up space, so city planning is important.
Thanks for showcasing. ^^
I was with this game since the beginning and I love it. I just love the whole dwarf genre in general but im a huge sucker for dwarf city builders and management games.
Well, can't really tell you what I thought of the video, since I couldn't see a damn thing, but thanks for the content.
So dark.
Lanterns... there are lanterns... Why? Just why :=|
A quick fix that I would do for the consumables is have each building have little runner units that will deliver consumables to the dwarfs. Turn off unit collision for them and that *should* solve the problem pretty quick not breaking the "immersion" of the game.
right click the tile to get the priority mining tag and the rally fields you can build will attract units automatically 9 at a time
talks about having to keep an eye on his engineer as it wanders off towards the vector of attack ...
I tried this game a while back and was pretty dissapointed, it was really laggy and made my cpu chug even without getting very far into the game, meanwhile the AI pathing and controls felt really awkward like an older RTS. Hope they fix things up.
Dwarvish Democracy!?...Now we just need a Dwarf version of Helldivers 2!
Seen dwarf an came running 🏃♂️
A fellow dwarven brother
All I saw was vaguely defined humanoids in the black void. Game's darkness is ridiculous.
Rock and STONE!
Rock and Stone!
The dark is too dark, r u sure there are dwarves there and not just health bars?
ThankYou SirSplatt
Funny that the engineers will be so distracted by productivity that they'll wander right into danger 😂
I played this on one of the really early betas and it was already great, also the dev truly appreciated and listened to criticism. Good to see its cone so far!
If they listen why is the game still so dark?
OR
The pathfinding issues still exist what more than two years in now?
Sorry but I don't think they listen that closely...
Listening doesn't mean "do everything anybody tells you to your game."
@@ianallen738 You're right it doesn't but when enough of your prospective customers are telling you something needs to change, it might just be a good idea. If you like profits, that is...
@@PastorwithoutaPulpitI think it was due to not being able to fix them (with number 2 problem)
I also think he didn't want it to be too light, so it's a gaming ethos for his game.
@@METALFREAK03 Sorry I was under the impression that most who make games make them to sell, not to uphold some artistic creative decision...
It seems to be so close to being JUST what I want. But just not so...
Also, how funny that I was just playing some Dwarfs in Total War Warhammer when I saw the notification for this video.
“I wish Dwarves would discard gold.” Do you even know Dwarves?
Speaking of Dwarven things, I picked up Bore Blasters last night and pretty much sacrificed my evening to it. Very satisfying game.
Where is my army of dwarves? In the tavern and drunk... Sounds right.
I wonder if the pathfinding thing also effects the orcs and the physical barriers of each unit better lends itself to a dwarven shield wall
Lordy, this is the WoW-est looking thing I've seen in a minute.
yeah, ill wishlist, but will wait til its been ironed out a bit before buying. got potential tho...
dwarves my beloved 🔥🔥
Splat, if u have no unit selected u can take the miner focus on a block by rightklicking it.
btw use the beserker upgrade for the king to get them without the berserk building, this unit is op
It sounds like a thematic good guy dungeon keeper
I wonder if you can make your own wall so you can basically make trap mazes to dwindle down any oncoming hordes
I hope the developers fix the lightin' an' pathfindin'. This game can be so good.
dang i love that ui
It is incredible thanmke
9:57 to prioritse blocks right click again on the blocks changes it from yellow to blue
If they gave us an option to have a low light vision I'd give this game a try
If you like Dwarfs so much you should listen to Wind Rose - Diggy Diggy Hole or basically everything they make as it's dwavish metal.
Splattercat my favorite series of yours is still Dying Light. The boxing one was cool too. Then the firewatch forest ranger one was ok. Just a random comment.
Am I weird that I LIKE how dark it is? I can see how it's annoying gameplay-wise, but it's great for the deep, deep underground cavern vibes.
Well, well, well, if it isn't SplatterCatGaming managing to mine out another gems-worth of feedback with his review! (Get it? Because we're talking about a dwarven mining game?)
In all seriousness though, SplatterCat has knocked it out of the park yet again with his thorough and insightful critique of "Beneath the Mountain." The developers would be wise to heed his words as valuable advice for refining and improving the overall experience.
His top priority suggestion? Do something about that atrocious pathfinding already! Having your dwarven units stumble around like they're three pints too deep into the ale is really disrupting the gameplay flow and combat effectiveness. Getting them some proper path navigation could go a long way in reducing all the excessive micromanagement currently required.
Oh, and while you're at it devs, be a pal and squash those annoying bugs, would you? Nobody likes a game that's more glitchy than a robotic bard's singing voice. Fixing the busted traps, UI crashes, and other technical mishaps is crucial for providing a smooth, stable experience where players aren't constantly worrying about game-breaking issues.
SplatterCat also had some quality-of-life suggestions that just make sense, like adding a rally flag for those consumable buildings and revamping that consumables menu to be more intuitive. UI improvements like those could streamline things quite nicely.
But perhaps most importantly, you really need to let there be light! Or color at least. SplatterCat makes an excellent point about how the drab visuals could use a splash of vibrant, dwarven bling. Imagine the walls glistening with veins of gold and glittering gemstones that miners slowly uncover as they delve deeper. Those brilliant pops of color amidst the stone could add a striking sparkle to the overall aesthetic!
So listen up, devs! By digging into SplatterCat's constructive critique, you could elevate "Beneath the Mountain" into the exceptional dwarven strategy jewel its impressive foundation deserves. His meticulous feedback is an invaluable tunneling map to reaching those polished depths of greatness.
Always sad when a game hits 1.0 and my biggest thought looking at it is "this needs more dev time". Also after the continuous feedback from the community that the game is too dark they've stuck hard to the darkness. Needs to be fixed.
Tunnel Scouts Rule!
I would totes play this if it wasnt so dark such a shame
Keep an eye on your engineers is true IRL too
the gameplay graphics give me major Dungeon Keeper vibes.
Looks uncooked... leaving this thing in the oven until a lot more is fixed. Way to many finished and polished games in this genre to accept this imho.
Soooo sounds like its ready for early access
Ha, looks like Dwarf spin on Dungeon Keeper
To play this or just replay dungeon keeper?
About the Gold trope for fun : since Dwarves are practical or pragmatic, I feel they should care little for Gold, which is not the most useful ore or material. It is rather soft and heavy, so good for decorating a home, but that is about it. Of course, you could argue it is just used as a currency like Humans did or do, but I don't feel like fantasy Dwarves would care much about currency when it comes to practical survival and building for their community. Just saying for fun.
So...Drums in the Deep?
Singing Dwarven mining songs...
My Mind...
"Hi ho, Hi ho, Its off to work we go..." lol
i love miners
right click a block to make the symbol blue to prioritize it
Pardon me, Mr. Cat. As I know how much you love playing anything Dakka & anything Orkish in Warhammer 40k, I thought you - & any other Dakka-enthusiasts - would like to know: As of March 8th, 2024, the Nintendo Switch now has the game "Dakka Squadron: Flyboyz Edition" which is a 3rd-person flying shooter that involves a great deal of customizable Ork aircraft. I thought you might want to take a look at it. Don't know if you'd be able to capture any gameplay or if you'd just provide your thoughts on the game without that, but I thought you might enjoy the game regardless.
For Khaz-Modan!
The bad pathing forces you to be a commander tho lol, without proper command any army is only so good.
I am still playing they are billions, any chance this is going to end up on xbox?
I'd like to know this too.
Wish you’d stream on TH-cam as well, you can do both simultaneously without violated TOS now in case you weren’t aware
He's said in the past he likes to keep them separate because he's more family friendly on youtube
@@jameswachter5295 ah, fair enough, still would love to see the vods somewhere tho
Dwarven games are having a hard time. They are either super buggy or missing features or they get abandoned.
Not sure which has worse lighting: this or Aliens Requiem. Either way, im a visual creature, so neither is for me.
Dwarves are popular right now, huh?
ROCK AND STONE
tldr for BTM is they're doing a few rounds on bug fix patches for the immediate issues before taking a creative break from BTM after working on it solo the past few years.
They plan to return to BTM with future content and feature updates which I hope they do as I'm in the same boat Splatty, having followed the test builds for a long time and really wanting it to succeed. I like the game but it has issues that make it not reccomendable for it's price.
Skips to game play *
“As the first batch of disgusting greenskins…”
Who is this joker that thinks the bat cave is not that much of a problem!
🖤
Unplayable until they fix unit pathing. Which seems extremely unlikely since it's been an issue for a very long time.
hope to find out why the reviews are so mixed
... now i know ....
i don't have this game yet because of the pathfinding....
They could have an ammo runner dwarf unit. Dude with a huge armored pack or crate he hauls behind him with resupply of consumables.
me like dwarf.
rock and stone
Bugs?! **Democratic seething**
This needs more time in the oven. Pathfinding issues in a RTS is a killer, characters running on the spot and it's just too dark. The goblin wizards throw off way more light than anything the dwarves do.
This is supposed to be the release version?
I can see the dungeon keeper comparison, similar concepts. But yeah way too dark. And hey it wouldn't be an RTS without workers wandering into the enemy.
you found too many good games, I must stop watching your videos 🤣, unless I want more games on my library 😍
It would be very un dwarfish to discard gold.
Too bad they didn't improve those issues before release. Dwarves not being able to see underground, pathing, and better unit selection were all main issues since it first showed up. Just like I learned my lesson with Kickstarter; I've learned my lesson investing in games that are not fully released. No more buying early access for me.
Day 4 of asking. Saleblazers next please? 😅😢😂❤
this game is made by a single person. issues would make sense. theres only so much a "one-man shop" can do
game is nice, played it a little, but the pathfinding/unit movement/units blocking themselves/ units sliding is just too much for me to enjoy it fully so I stopped playing hoping it will be fixed at some point.
Splat is covering so many 'mixed' reviews game these days.....
It's unfortch about the bugs but I love watching experienced people play this game. I'm down for another long stream if Splatt can stomach it!
Really cool concept but the game just looks way too under-cooked at the moment.
I thought this got cancelled years ago
I remember two or was it more years ago when you first covered this one. I to wanted to love it but it's just far to dark and then the pathfinding issues became apparent. Other issues like minimal control of units in that there's no way to set boundaries for the different types of units and now find out that some buildings have no ability to set way points. Then we get into the bugs and crashing issues, so yah a pass from me still. Let's hope they listen, although I doubt it because we've been saying the same thing for years at this point especially about just how dang dark this game is...
Thanks Splat...
DK is unique, because of the mix of design and production quality. The gameplay is often secondary and mediocre, but it immediately feels great and ambient.
The sound design is key here, but the concept of artstyle too (despite 30 yo 3d looks like trash). There is nothing like a good sound design in games, that is nearly timeless and connects with our minds and memories.
