    In Australia one way to easily differentiate goaltending and interference is to call them offensive interference and defensive interference. Everyone understands the violating side and thus the following penalties. Great video. Keep up.

    Are you able to make a video explaining what a carry is and when the ball is considered at rest? The FIBA rulebook has very minimal explanation as to when the ball has come to rest & also has no explanation to what a carry is. Thanks!

    Very well explained i just find out about this rule, but i feel like it should change, I agree with most interference like "tip out" from under the basket from defensive team, that's definitely a violation, but in all other cases if the defense is able to block i feel like they should let it be a legal block.

      @@-Saitama Players are evolving and becoming better on both ends of the court. The NBA focuses their rules to benefit offense more which is way we see a larger output in scoring. Since that is the favoured side of the ball, there will be more recruitment of strong offensive players to the NBA and less of a scouting/recruiting focus of defensive players. Which may make it look like defense is getting worse. I believe that is the reason but I could be wrong.

    Hey Ref, if you're reading this. Let's assume a 3 point shot is made and someone below the rim jumps high enough to grab the ball from defensive end and ultimately prevent a field goal. Would that be considered goaltending or is it legit block/steal?
    Sorry I'm a casual basketball player trying to understand the official rules. Pardon my english and terminology.

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Vivek! No worries! So if the ball is above the rim and on it’s downward flight (which is what it sounds like from your example) then yes! It is goaltending!
      In order for it to be a block/steal, you have to block it on its upward flight (when the ball is still moving up in the shot) for it to be legal :)

    When is a ball above the rim? When the entire ball is below the rim, when the midline of the ball is below the rim, or when the entire ball is above the rim?
    Thank you

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Above the rim: The bottom portion of the ball is above the level of the rim
      Below the rim: Top portion of the ball is below the level of the rim
      Those are the areas we look for violations

    Is there a difference between Fiba and Nba rules regarding goaltending/interference? I saw that during the Olympics in Tokyo, Draymond Green did something that wouldn’t be allowed in the Nba but was allowed using the Fiba rules, could you explain it briefly if you know to what I am referring?

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the ability to hit or grab the ball off the ring. In FIBA, as soon as the ball contacts the ring, players can knock it off or grab it. You cannot do it in NBA/WNBA/NCAA

    Hello, so during yesterday's panathinaikos vs maccabi game 3 of the euroleague playoffs, there was a goaltend called on panathinaikos with 15 seconds left. The referees went to the monitor and after review, changed the call. However instead of panathinaikos having the ball out of bounds they deemed a jump ball. Maccabi had 3.8 seconds when the goaltend was called. They got the tip but for some reason they got the whole 15 seconds. Can you explain the rules?
    Thanks,

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question, I would need video, maybe you can provide it? I will try looking for it this week but here is my thought on why that might have occurred.
      Team control of the ball ends on the shot, due to reversing the call, no one had team control on the called violation, which would be the reason to go to a jumpball. I think they are trying not to put the offense at a disadvantage from an incorrect call, which resulted in a change to the shot clock, which should be 14 if it is a front court throw-in.
      By rule, from the scenario you gave me, they are correct on going to a jump ball but incorrect in reseting the shot clock. It should be Maccabi Throw-In with 3.8 seconds on the shot clock.

      @@refereeuniversity they said that the ball hit the rim but it was way after the wrong goaltending call. If the contact with the rim counts after the whistle why doesn't the offensive player who last touched and sent the ball out of bounds count as possession for the defense? I'll send you a link right away

      @@refereeuniversity and there are some more interesting calls that I'm absolutely sure you'd like to see. If you want I'll send you some more because there are about 4 extremely controversial decisions in less than 90 seconds

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stavrosbeats2013 The rules could be clearer in this instance in process (they cannot cover every scenario) but I believe that was the right process. I say that because if they never called the goaltending, the ball would have hit rim, causing a shot clock reset. That is where official judgement and application of different rules would come into play. If I did not call the goaltend, ball hits rim after shot but no one has possession. So jumpball occurs and shot clock reset to 14 in the front court if offensive team wins the jump ball. If after the incorrect goaltend call, the ball does not hit rim with no clear team control, it would be a jumpball and the shot clock would stay. The reason this interpretation is correct, is because if they called an incorrect goaltend and the ball went in after, then the basket would count and defensive team would have the ball after an IRS on the goaltend

    so it's illegal if slapping out the ball bouncing on the rim in NBA but legal in FIBA?

  • @datguygabe

    A relevant video from yesterdays playoff Game SunsVClippers Game 2 WCF final seconds an inbound pass is caught in mid air above the rim and then dunked like an alley oop. Logically, not literal rules, if the player is standing 2 inches on the otherside of the line then It is goaltending because the ball is considered active in the field of play. rules do change logic doesnt.. If the ball is dead and the possession inside field of play activates it, shouldn't by rule it be an active ball as player touches the inbound? A dead ball, no matter how pretty the dunk is, should either be dead in play or active on touch - its in conceivable how a 'dead' ball doesn't activate in the field of play, yet it can produce 2 points? Hope these questions make sense and you are able to reference the replay of the WCF game.

    • @refereeuniversity
      @refereeuniversity  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a great scenario! Since by FIBA rules you cannot score on an inbound pass(17.3.1), no one can have goaltending due to no shot taking place. You can have interference though!

    • @refereeuniversity

      Hey Pepper, Thanks for the feedback. Here are a couple reasons why:
      1) The video is to illustrate the action that the rule is written about.The footage does not matter what league it is from, it is the action that matters to provide a visual.
      2) The videos I attain and compile in each video are not easily accessible. A lot of searching and watching full videos to try and attain a clear clip is not easy. As you can see, some scenarios do not have video due to rarity or accessibility.
      3) NBA videos tend to be clear and have multiple camera angles making it great quality to have in the video to see it clearly.
      4) Different leagues tend to have overlapping rules which can allow for individuals to use some of the explanations here for their leagues.
      I take pride in my videos and the tend to take awhile to be released due to the exhaustive effort required to find clips and edit them. Most videos have anywhere to 10-20 different videos spliced in. There is no site with readily accessible clips and it would deteriorate content if I only grabbed from FIBA videos due to rarity of actions occurring, video quality and angles may not be covered and less visual content.
