    Have owned these for 1,5 years now. Love them! Bought them originially for the flat frequency response for live/studio mixing. Only downside is they're relatively heavy (if that bothers you), and the flat "honest" frequency response means that music that's mixed too bright is gonna sound too bright and rip your head off.

    My workaround for the 840 stock pads was to get a pair of 940 pads - Same dimensions, much nicer material (velour-ish), and MUCH more comfortable.

  • @angooos

    I've had these for over six years and they sound great. Very flat sound response, good detail, and nice tight bass. The only cons I've encountered is the bonded leather on the top of the headset has started to peel and the plastic rotating connection on the right side broke about five years. It was an easy fix with some epoxy so no biggie. Considering I've used them regularly for six years, I'm beyond pleased with their overall quality.

    Would it be possible for you to review the 440's I've been looking for closed and neutral sound, without breaking the bank. Canadian pricing is 250 on these, would like to know if the 440's are similar sounding with worse build, which would be ok for home use for me.

    I just picked up a pair of these and the slider adjustment is pretty horrible on my unit. Every time I put them down or move them they retract, and both sides don't even have the same tension. Are my expectations too high for a $100 headphone, or should I look into getting a replacement?

    Dear Zeus. Given that I own a pair of Shure 840's, would you recommend investing in a pair of Fostex trp50's (its mods incuded) and an amp to drive these for music listening and gaming? I have these 840's for more than a year and my general feeling about the sound is that it is just good. Not exquisit, nog emerging, but definitely not bad, just good. Therefore I'm looking into something else and your enthusiasm for the Fostex trp50 is no hidden fact so I was curious about your thoughts wether the Fostex will make a big of a difference or wether I should aim for open cans like the HD600 (or the massdrop anniversary set to keep the pricerange more compatible). Thanks in advance. I hope you see this :)

  • @ald7248
    @ald7248 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    A problem with these headphones that I don't think Zeos picked up on - the stock pads are very shallow. This will become an issue if you have largish ears because the outer edges of your ears will become very sore within 30-90 minutes. The good news is that this can be fixed by cutting off about 8-10 inches of a guitar cable and rolling it up under the inside edge of each pad to give your ears a bit more clearance.

  • @Nick-s-f
    @Nick-s-f 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Zeos, did you try the 1540 pads on the srh840?
    I find the HM5 Hybrids to be functional, but for music enjoyment they make the highs unpleasant and you also lose some bass. It was bad enough that I went back to the stock pads.
    Then I tried 1540 pads (I have a set I use for my MK3), they are the ones to use for the 840. They keep the highs and bass exactly where they are with the stock pads -> perfect.

    I've owned the 840's, dt 880, Grado 325, sony monitors ( cant remember the model number but they were expensive), and the hd650. I kept the hd650, it's my prefered sound. However, the 840 were amazing for they money and were able to give the pricier ones a run for their money. I could easily live with the shures. Phenomenal cans! Well done shure!

    @CT37BN 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Z if you want to get replacement pads that are mid-way the OEM and HM5, I highly recommend the Auray *genuine sheep skin ear pads ( there are 2 kinds - first for MDR7506 and others of it's kind - the other for M50/m50x and it's kind like those 840's ). Only comes in leather and velour - no hybrid but they are tops!
    Those 840 look really good - metal571 highly recommends a couple of other Shure headphones. My only question is about the headband, because they look like M50x hard as in nearly no cushion, as in like a brick sitting on top of your head uncomfortable., are they?
    New Fostex TR80 close back ( 80&250 ohms ) are the same price and they come with stock thick/thin ear pads plus straight/coiled cable.

    I'm so glad someone is reviewing these. I went with the 840 as my first real headphone other than the m50x. looks like I made the right choice. I got mine used for 120 and have had them for 6 months. I abuse them regularly throw.. toss them in backseat of car' put them under a heavy pile of clothes in a travel bag and nothing has broken.
    I've been looking to buy an open set of cans with more clarity and neutral sound sig, perhaps a tad more punchiness with the bass but I do not want to sacrifice vocals (female) for that . any recommendations Z?

      Dt 770 80 ohms is better. But an endgame headphone are the dt990s 250 ohm after burn in.

    5 Years later I bought these headphones XD. I agree with the sound quality review 100%. I bought them to A/B with DT 770's and there is literally no comparison. They even make my monitors (Focal Alpha 60's with Sonarworks) sound harsh. BUT the headband is brutally uncomfortable. "Theres actually padding in here", sure, but on the 1" that it contacts your head. I've never worn headphones this uncomfortable. I'm planning to cut it off and put on the DT 880 foam instead. Also the ear cups get hot cause they're pleather, so get the upgraded ear cups. Great review, as always I love what you have to say. Thanks.

    Hi, I'm kinda reading mixed reviews on srh440, what's your take on them?

      I take they are in my shopping cart. I may just grab them soon.

    i just ordeded the SRH940. They really sound neutral since they are monitoring headphones too. But for my taste the bass lacks a little bit. Obviously the m50s are bass heavy. Since i mostly hear electronic music nowdays i prefer a little bit more bass. The SRH940 sounds emtionless. I might try them again out against the AKG k-712 pro to see which one has the bigger soundstage. In terms of comfort they are a lot more comfortable than the m50s but the headband sits pretty forward on my head. Which is kinda weird to wear
    Question: Do the SRH1540 have more bass? What exactly do you prefer on thze srh840 above the 1540?

    Unfortunately these headphones have a design flaw around the plastic hinge. Mine broke after about 4 years.

    Hi z, I do lots of video like animated, product videos for online marketing, live events & also mix BG tracks for my videos on daily basis and I listen 3 to 4 hours music everyday while working on visuals and watch movies & play games over weekends, which one of these would be the idol choice "Koss 4sPro - Ath Msr7 - Shure 840? Or any other better option for headphones under 200$ thank you.

    sorry to disturb again, Z, but
    are these good earpads for the T50RPs?
    Last time, you told me to use the Velour 1840s.
    But the T50RPs are in a need of bass. The velours seem to intensify the treble instead.

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the 1540 pads are still the best pads.

    • @amaulana090

      What if I mod the 840s with a thick, wooly sock to cover the pleather?
      Like velour, but with the same sound isolation.
      Like alcantara...

    Would these be a good travel headphone due to the closed back nature ? Are they an exciting headphone ? Thanks 😊

    • @NightmareFactory830
      @NightmareFactory830 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they'd be a good travel set. However they are a bit fragile. Exciting? Ehh depends on what you want. These are flat sounding and detailed, and you'll hear music like how it was mixed and mastered. But exciting is usually big bass with highs, In which you'll like the 770 pros better

    Hi Z! Let me start by saying I really enjoy your reviews! they are full of emotions which sound honest and reassuring the sense that they are, although subjective, not bias and 'paid for'. Great job! I just started searching for a good headphone for overall use around or under $250 for a start and instantly went on with your reviews hoping I would end up with a concrete answer/result. Unfortunately I did not. I have heard in one of your reviews that you have a list of headphones somewhere out there but havent found it. Therefore I thought I would just put the question straight to you in a comment of a headphone that may be an option. I listen to electronic and acoustic music alike. Nils Frahm (pianist with electronic samples), I also listen to violin solos, as well as underground berlin techno and funky jazz (Marcus Miller) so openness/clarity and bass is equally important. Also I would like to have a headphone I could use if on the go sometimes (rarely for traveling) so isolation would sometimes come in handy. Could you please recommend your best option knowing the above? (was thinking based on your reviews shure840, brainwavs hm9, philips x2 or shp9500 modded, audiotechnika etc.. but I am open to anything you recommend)
    THANK YOU!

    (I need some decent sub £100 closed headphones for listening to music for extended periods of time (at work))

    So compared to the classic Sony MDR-7506, is it basically a detail improvement, but basically the same "breed" of can?

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matthew Quinn Yeah I would say that. The Sony;s definitely concentrate on bass more.

    I really want the most detailed music-listening experience for around 150 bucks. I also play games, but I am definitely not looking for a gaming headset. From your opinion of the M50x's, I don't think I'll go with those. I have steered away from the 598's simply because of the lack of bass, but you might know something that I don't. Do you know a better alternative?

    • @ZReviews

      +scott1010 The new Fostex Mk3's that I release next will do ya. But you need a lot of amplification to run them.

    My big worry with the SRH840 is the loose wires that come down from the headband to the cups, otherwise, I want these.
