    UAE brought a team of heavy hitters to the race and wore everyone down, there were only some limited breakaway attempts before Pogi lit it up. And then when he did Wellens and Del Toro still have enough energy to defend and disrupt any chase for a long time after that. When TP said he would attack on Monte Ste Marie everyone thought it was a joke as the revised course put the big climb too far away from the finish. Joke's on us, it seems.

    That course is much harder than they make it look. I rode the Strade Bianche Granfondo a few years ago and it was brutal. There are open flat sections where if a gap opens on the gravel, you're not chasing back unless you have a motor like Ganna. Plus the climbs are super punchy and that final climb into Piazza del Campo is a wall.

    I watched everything unfolding as you did Chris. I had the same "WTF is Quinn doing" and every other comment you made. I applaud the efforts of the 2-3 finishers as they were only held back by their DS's, when the move was made , and a crash due to Simmons inattentiveness on the climb didn't help Skujins. Although, watching him and Maxim, it was apparent who was the strongest on the day outside of Tadej. Exciting race? depends on your interpretation. I am glad the announcers were able to keep the dialog rolling to make it interesting. They only mentioned shortly after he went up the road that he hasn't always had success in these types of attacks, leading the watching public to stay glued to the tele. In the end everything finished as it should (IMO)

  • @epincion

    His dominant win is largely due to the fact the top tier of pro cyclists avoid racing each other in the early season races. His real competitors Vingegaard, Roglic, Remco, and MVDP (in a one day classic type race) were not competing and even an excellent rider like Kuss or Pidcock is in reality second tier.
    In my opinion Tadej was determined to lay down a marker of his total dominance in form just like Jonas did in O Gran Camino.
    In a recent interview UAE rider J Almeida let the cat out the bag by saying that the prime aim of Pogacar this year is to beat Jonas and VLB and win the TDF - he desires revenge for his loss in the last two years. It also helps that this year’s TDF has gravel sections which suits Tadej. However one worry for him has to be that while he was grandstanding with this 80km solo and finishing minutes ahead none of his UAE teammates could keep up. He cannot do 80km solos day after day in the TDF f

    • @luiscolon921
      @luiscolon921 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not only can he not do 80 k solos back to back he won’t be able to pull one off in the TDF. An attempt would be a death wish to the rest of his TDF. His top competition won’t be a Tom Pidcock.

      Was a mistake, nothing more. His attack was rather pointless if it wasn't part of a team tactic to get other teams to work. Certainly didn't play out well though and he just worked himself over for pretty much nothing. Then again, Trek did get a podium, so maybe not for nothing.

    What's nice in Strade bianche is that iit's for climbers that eat dust like Bardet, Formolo, and Pogacar, or for cobblestone riders that can climb, like Cancellara, Van Aert, Benoot, Van der Poel etc. The climbers seem to have taken the lead, but the fifth place of Mohoric and the tenth spot of Laporte were really impressive. Mohoric had almost parked his bike on the penultimate climb, yet still managed to the climbers, who must have been spent. Similarly, Skuijns is probably not as good a climber as Van Gils, but seemed to have had more stamina.
    Other than that it was rather boring to watch. Pogacar is too good.

    I'm old enough to remember when an epic solo ride to victory was inspiring. I spoke with someone who did so in the 80's, and his story is pretty cool. Tadej pulling a Landis just seems absurd. Guy comes out of the gate on his first race of the year and tears the peloton to shreds. That's cray cray.

      @mrm95 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      He has been the best rider in the world for multiple years now. Has won the TdF twice and 5 Monuments at the age of 25. Him soloing against lacklustre competition (even Pidcock has hardly proven to be able to beat him regularly) is not comparable to Landis at all. Winning a race he has won before without MvdP, WVA, in form Alaphilippe or even Mads Pedersen is hardly an incredible feat for him even if he attacked from 81 km out. He attacked way out in Lombardia previously as well and did the same on a rainy mountain day in the TdF in the year of his second win too.

    • @matttilley8620

      @@mrm95 You make it seem like he was racing against amateurs. You go on and pretend that there's nothing suspect about that ride. It's fun to pretend.

    • @triing210
      @triing210 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand the feeling of it being suspect. But there's a couple factors. First, Pidcock said that the group didnt really organize a chase. Tadej is a better time trialist than any of the other competitors today, so when there wasn't an organized response, he's going to stay away.
      Second, his team was drilling it to set up the move, stringing out the field and making organizing strong domestiques to chase that much more difficult.
      Maybe I'm naive and he's doped to the gills. But I hope that he's clean, and that this win came down to preparation, race dynamics, tactics, and his being a generational talent who executed the plan to perfection. @@matttilley8620
