      I doubt it. He doesn't need to. Check the course, it is tailor made for him this year. He just needs to ride tempo till Sormano then do that Pog move 2 km into it, slap a minute onto everyone atop and then cruise to the finish. And even if some unlikely hero somehow manages to keep up with him there is also that little bump at San Fermo where Pog can again crush them.
      Honestly, if Pog is in form, barring some freak stuff, I dont see how he could lose that.

  • @ogradar85
    @ogradar85 วันที่ผ่านมา +35

    Actually it wasn't a stupid tactic at all. Our team (Slovenia) did a mistake when they went all out after that Castrillo attack. They said this after the race. They burned 2 domestiques in 500m for no reason, but I think they were afraid the break would make too much of a gap. They couldn't rely on Tratnik to come out on top in that group.
    Pogi immediately saw the attacks coming in advance, so he got ahead of the other team's tactics. He had Tratnik ahead and Primož behind in the peloton waiting. When Tratnik did his part, Remco had only Wellens and Van Gils helping him, but both of them fell apart in that first climb. That was game over. Belgians were weak (they missed WVA badly), as were we (Slovenians), but now Pogi created a 2vs1 situation vs the Belgians (Roglič sitting in the back). After that it was all group 2 syndrome.

    • @alphaniner3770
      @alphaniner3770 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think you have a good point here. One thing that played a big role here I think is that for many 'domestiques' the season seemed to be already over - only few showed good form (Mollema, Tratnik). This made many teams rather nervous I guess. The absence of radio communication and country teams made this probably worse. Then we could see (also with the womens race) that it was in fact very difficult to drop the stronger riders. Pogacar dropped all his competitors with his surprise attack - otherwise I doubt he could easily drop Van der Poel, which he certainly wasn't planning to sprint against (just watch his pre race interview when this was asked).

  • @ArnyRimmer
    @ArnyRimmer วันที่ผ่านมา +10

    It was a crazy move from Pogačar. But it was probably the best he could do for a chance at the title. Because Sloveniens were weak, Roglič was unusable for the job of a domestic player, and opponents started to go away. No one in the peloton would be able to catch them, so Pogačar would have to control all the riders himself. And that is not possible. But since Tratnik was in front (which is a good tactic) it wasn't so bad to jump to the front. If the Tratnik be in the peloton, he would also drag his opponents, who would rest and then start anyway. This is how Pogačar avoided further brakes, forced the opponent to work much earlier than they thought, so they were tired in the end. Of course, with a stronger team, a different tactic would have been better for Tadej, but with what he had at his disposal, it was probably the best he could do in the end if he wanted to have any chance of fighting for the title. And that was greit for us, viewers to see a battle of favorites. Otherwise, the race would simply be won by some second-rate driver, whom the favorites would let pass.
    Pogačar was obviously also lucky with Sivakov. Evenepoel was clearly not in form and the absence of Van Aert also took its toll. If Belgium were stronger, it would be much more difficult for Pogačar. But Van der Poel surprised positively.
    In the end it was an amazing race, but as a fan of Pogačar I suffered a lot. That title was terribly important to Tadej. And unfortunately, the opponents relied a lot on that. And so they wouldn't have helped the Pogačars even once, even though that would definitively lose their chance for the title. But with the fact that Evenepoel and Van der Poel already have titles, they could be completely at ease and played the trick.

  • @graemehill
    @graemehill วันที่ผ่านมา +19

    Hot take: Sivakov did the right thing. He would have been dropped way earlier if Pogi didn't wait for him. The only reason he was there is because Pogi was letting him. If Sivakov didn't do a few small pulls then he would have just been dead weight. His only chance was to work with Pogi doing small pulls and hope for a miracle where his legs held on for a podium finish. Just riding Pogi's wheel is what everyone seems to think he should have done but that was not one of his options. Also France didn't really have anything else going on at that point this was their only chance. It's not like dropping back and helping Alaphilippe or something like that was an option.

    Chris, great commentary as usual.
    However, I disagree that Pavel shouldn't have worked. There's more on the line than just the win, and podium for France would have been great, especially given Alaphillipe crashed out. If the win is the only thing, then no, don't pull, but that's not the case as there is more to play for.
    Nobody is more aware of what Tadej's capable of than Pavel. He could have conceivably ridden himself onto a podium. Of course it didn't work that way, but I think he chose wisely. In fact I think Vine should have tried to hang too but he refused.

    • @mulinanr

    Hi Chris, why shouldn't Sivakov work with Pogacar? I mean the france favorite Julian Alaphilippe is crashed out, Chris laport is no where to see, the closest one is Romain Bardet, we all know if Sivakov work with Tadej, he will lose on the line to Tadej for sure, but at least he could get himself a chance on the podium imagine if he pull 20%, Tadej pull 80%, so i don't think that was a knucklehead move; then combining with the "UAE team love", i think it was an intelligent move, just personal reading, correct me if i'm wrong. After the climb, the Netherlands, Spain, and the U.S. each had two riders in the group, but everyone was looking to Remco first and Mathieu second, without even taking their turns at the front. I think Remco’s best move would have been to do one strong pull, like he did in the Olympics, and drop them off his wheel. Still, the wiser thing to do (and not only for the Belgians), would have been to keep kalm, stay organised, maybe let Pogacar gain some more time on the climbing sections, chip away at his lead everywhere else on the course, keep him under constant pressure, keep Evenepoel (and the rest) in the backseat as long as needed, and go all in towards the last round.
      Only Skujins and Healy did a real chasing effort after the Belgians were spent. Strong riders no doubt, but not exactly podium candidadets at the start. Still, they managed to get within almost half a minute of Pogacar at one point. This tells me a 4 man chase, including the likes of Evenepoel and Van der Poel, would have been able to bridge the gap. Especially since Pogacar really looked fatigued at one point in the last round with 15-20 km to go.
      I'm convinced the race could really have gone differently. But Pogacar is probably the wisest of them all and he knew, if not felt, that the most likely thing to happen after he went was indeed total chaos. And he had the legs to take advantage of that in the best way possible. 👏👏👏

      @VV_1989 but how? How could it gone differenlty? Pogacar would put 4 min on Belgium with Tratnik and then Sivakov. The reason Healey and Skunjs COULD be "there" within 1min was because BEL pulled and blew up.

    • @VV_1989
      @VV_1989 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@milhouse53 First of all, I'm definitely not buying the 4 min lead. But, like I said, think Healy and Skujins + Evenepoel and Van der Poel chasing in an organised manner, and I'm convinced they could have bridged that gap.

    • @milhouse53
      @milhouse53 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @VV_1989 i agree that they were disorganized because..well they are not one team. That's why Pogacar rode away from them because he only had one teammate left- Roglic, and Pogacar didn't even trust him.
      If Pogacar stayed he would be alone with 6 Belgians and handful of Dutch and Healey and Slunjs and O'Connor. Even if they cought the break say with 20km left and he attacked then he would 100% take Remco and Matthiew up with him then.
      So why didn't they chase him as a team for 100km? Because they are not a team and they all want the other guy to pull. That's the whole plan on Pogacar's part.
      How could Belgium play it better? Only by jumping on Pog not letting him ride away. BUT he is.not an idiot, he attacked on the steepest part so that those Belgian domestiques can't latch on and Remco is far in the bunch. But he wouldn't close it either. There was nothing they could do.
      They tried catching Pog after and failed. And if Remco didn't try when he did..we'll.ok.not 4.min but 2.30 would be there and then his team will still fall apart when he would ask them to close that!

    • @tommyrq180
      @tommyrq180 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Truly a HOF performance but even more so since they’ve done it at Worlds before. The Dutch women are now the Russians of team sports. Russians are renowned for not just failing to work as a team (see, for example, Nordic skiing), but actually sabotaging their team first even at the cost of letting another rival nation win. Internal jealousies and rivalries overshadow national pride with ZERO leadership intervention to enforce a team concept. It’s not just being a knucklehead, but being a selfish, jealous, incompetent knucklehead. All resulting in a BELGIAN winning… OUCH. 😓

    Everytime Chris shows a still shot at 69 km 61 km 59km 54 km Pog and Sivakov are 39 sec to 49 sec ahead. That is NOT a lot for a group of 8-10 strong riders behind. Why didn't they get organized? Because they had no legs. They were ALREADY all riding close to the "red". TADEJ simply rode at 40 sec ahead of them for 85km. There was no tactics- he just had better LEGS!

  • @SubtleEchoRose

    Was it a knucklehead move for Tadej to attack with 100km still to go in the UCI World Championships? Maybe, but if anyone can pull off a 'knucklehead' move like that, it's Tadej! He's the kind of rider who thrives on turning the unexpected into a winning strategy. And while nobody else dared, he went for it in classic Tadej fashion-bold, aggressive, and always entertaining.
    What’s next for him? The big question now is whether he can win all five Monuments. He’s already proven he can dominate races like Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. The challenge will be the cobbled classics like Paris-Roubaix, but if anyone can adapt and rise to the occasion, it's him. The guy's a legend in the making!
