Sooo Sad today...David Sanborn passed away. I have special feelings about the loss of one of American Music's most influential and iconic Saxophonists. I was lucky to be in the vicinity. I know that. Blessed to be there...but what he gave me was an even greater blessing. His words were, "I'm never going to tell you what to play! Bring YOU to the party! Show me what you got! I'll let you know if you get too far off base!" I was blown away..."You mean I can play whatever I want??! What??!/ It was unheard of in the circles I had been in. In the circles I had been in control was everything. In this new atmosphere with David, Creativity and invention was everything and it clicked for me why Marcus Miller is so free and creative. He was used to atmospheres like this one and with Miles Davis where you don't just play the song by rote...you don't play the same solo night after night...you are expected to expound, expand and invent new atmospheres and landscapes. Take the music somewhere! Gasp! and slowly I began to understand and step into my newfound freedom. I worked desperately to rise to the occasion and I continue to march along the path. God blessed me with 7 years (wait...addendum: I started in July 2014 and did his last gig February of 2024. That means 10 years! Sigh...:0(......) of playing with such a great musician as David Sanborn. There were other guys before and after me...Richard Patterson had the longest tenure. Much respect to him. He's a badd man, a great player and was there forever. The fact that I got a little bit of time is a blessing I will never gloat about or take for granted. Sad day indeed,,,,I am trying to get a letter to Larry Graham who is probably my first and biggest influence. We lose our heroes and they need to know how important they are. David Sanborn, you changed the trajectory of my bassplaying and my career. How can I ever thank you. My time with you was a gift from you and God. Sincerely, André
I often play this video because it motivates me! That thump from the bass is the best I've ever heard. This evening, I learned of Sanborn's passing on Fox News. I let out an audible, 'Noooo'. Naturally, I returned to this video. I was glad to see such a fine tribute from Andre.
I can't get over this news... Andre, I commented on this video, and you invited my girlfriend and I backstage at Ronnie Scott's to meet David that night. Thank you so much. David will be missed by us all.

Oh My God!! What did I just listen to? That was bass magic. I'm a huge David Sanborn fan, but that bass made me forget he was there. What incredible sound, timing, tone, and magic. I'm in awe. That was like liquid gold.
I don't believe in $3,500 basses. Never have. Never will. Some of the funkiest basses i own cost less than $500. And I broke my tradition and bought a $3500 F Bass and hated it. Bought a $2500 Zon and hated it. Bought a $1500 Fender and hated it. Bought a $250 Fernandes and the thing kills! Is such a funky, snappy, attacky, fat sound... So now I'm back to my motto. Cost don't mean a thing. I'm entitled to my opinions for decisions I make in my life.
Andre, I'm so glad you are out there showing people they can sound amazing even on a tight budget I was having a serious dilema between buying a MIM Fender or a Sire V7, and seeing you play was the final push that made me chose Sire. I've been playing the Sire for months now and I am yet to regret my decison. It's such a beautiful instrument especially for it's price tag, maybe too good. I'm expecting a spike in it's price once Sire starts getting serious demands for the model, even now as we speak they are having problems keeling up with the constant demand, glad I got mine on time LOL. I've also been going throught the comment and have concluded that besides being an amazing musician you are also a fine gent who goes out of his way to encourage fellow musicians and for that I really feel obligated to express my outmost respect.

This version is excellent!! I’ve heard Marcus Miller’s a thousand ways and it’s always good!! This is just as fantastic. Making it his own!! This is top notch!! I think Marcus would like this too!👍❤️
Thank you man! Nice of you to say. I been practicing and pushing hard the last two years. How bout you! There's only way to become what we dream of .. .TIME PUT IN!! Go hard!!
Saw you perform with Sanborn a few years ago. One thing about Sanborn....he always makes sure the bass player can SHRED! I love this version of Run for Cover. Thanks for posting it. I found it during a TH-cam rabbit hole session digging up Sanborn cuts.
Thank you. I can honestly say, Sanborn unleashes his band and requires that you dig way deep and play your best! I am so very blessed to have spent time around and learned so much from him. He single handedly opened my creative rivers...100%. He never puts up a roadblock or a restraint. He's like "Get em man!! Go for it!!" Lucky me!!
I remember about 4-5 years ago, a year after I started bass, I heard this tune, and it was the first time I'd ever heard a slap line that was more than just octaves, and the technical proficiency blew my mind. I just remembered the song all this time later, and I learned it just now. Absolutely my favorite slap line to play of all time. Love it!
Jpkrao technically that's what it is. But unless you wanna spend a couple g's on Marcus fender, this Sire (designed by Marcus Miller *duh*) gets u close as hell to that tone for 500! You should check out the clips of Marcus, himself, playing one. You wouldn't know the difference
Lol! Goes to show, no matter who or what, somebody will always fault with you...one guy said the whole thing sucked because i played a wrong note on the vsmp. out....another got mad and said I was tryimg to be Marcus...im just a guy doing a gig and when told "take a E Funk bass solo", i do things i learned from Louis Johnsin & Larry Graham...ive been playing this wsy for 30 years.. that dont matter...im not supposed to slap the bass...??? Lol!!
everything about this is sooo awesome; the band interplay, etc. but the bassplayer is f@@king awesome. bomb-ass tone, feel, super in-the-pocket, and showing how great the Sire basses are. And he gets my vote for best "bass face" ever :) I think the bass laid down afterwards and had a smoke 😏
I got to say, Neil Jason and Marcus both were on Hideaway. I liked them both at the time. Jason had played with The Crusaders on scratch and I had been missing Marcus, Jaco was still doing his thing. In 1980 something Straight to the Heart came out and yes I was digging on Marcus making David play. When I first heard Run For Cover, and it was live, I just had to see what Marcus was doing. It sounded like two bass lines running together, I was floored. Andre I got to say, I really like what you did with the piece and you are playing one of Marcus' basses too......SWEET!!!!! and funky!!!!!
Andre, my wife and 12 year old son met you back stage after the show Friday in Madison. You rocked it man! Loved your solo. Your skills untied my shoe laces. Loved the show. Wish it never ended.
I do remember meeting you, but forgive me...Please tell me your names again. I apologize...It all happens very quickly and if I don't write names down or get a business card, it escapes me although I remember faces very well. Thanks so much for the kind words. Hope to see you again!! Sincerely...
@@andreberry5618 You are great bro, I think GOD zapped you. Your notation and technique gives a feeling, more than just a sound. Thank you for sharing your work. Hunting down your content and sharing
Man...I got about $15 grand tied up in boutique custom basses that I have purchased over the years. If I had known that much groove and tone was possible for less than $500, I would have saved the other $14.5 gs and invested it in low-risk stocks and bonds! (shakin' head)👑🎸🎵
On the 20th time of watching still sounding fresh TOP top TOP top class again I defiantly want one of those sire basses the same as yours is what I'm going to order.Live long and prosper my friend..................................
Andre Berry lays down some serious grooves! We saw David Sanborn perform in Toronto this past October. It was a seriously good show from one of the masters on the sax.
Sou aficionado do Dave Koz ,mas é otimo escutar, aprender e curtir estes icones do jazz.Sou baterista e percussionista amador e agora aprendendo sax. Meu mundo é Musica !!! Musica Cura !!!
What a talented group of people! Well, I ordered the bass immediately after watching this video. ..20 times, lol Thanks for reminding me is actually cooler to put your own spin on things. Well done young man!
Loving the 'stank' bass face. Great stuff Andre. I also love what appears to be you absolute JOY in music. And, I'm checking out some Fried Funk.... which is tasting great; well seasoned and prepared. Hahaha. Thanks for inspiring.
This is the first time I have had the pleasure of seeing you play Mr. Andre Berry and all I can say is WOW, truly amazing. I just got my old Peavey out of the closet where it has sat for 20+ years, to ever become 1/10th as good as this video man, I need to start over from the beginning. Thanks for the pleasure of seeing this amazing video sir.
lol! thank you, but, oh, I miss alright!! but the whole key as told to me by Marcus Miller, is, how quickly you recover and adjust! How quickly you disguise your missteps! :0)
@Andre Berry I know this is a year later, but I just came across this video today. I played this tune several times both in local shows and for my college fusion band, and I have always felt like many bassists slap perfectly without missing a beat, and that is the art of slap. Obviously, the point is to miss as little as possible, but it is so reassuring for me to know that no one is perfect. The fact that I occasionally miss a beat in slap songs like this has long been a mental block for me and has made me feel like a lesser bassist, but to hear that big time pros like you and Marcus miss occasionally as well makes me feel so much better. You just gained a new fan, thank you for your humility and for passing on such wise advice.
@@basscipe5988 no he didn't and I do know him personally. We just had fun slapping and communicating, and talking about our influences, Larry Graham, Jaco and I always cite my main influence, Louis Johnson, who George says I do a pretty good imitation of. You do know I am almost the same age as Marcus..well.. I'm 58.. Marcus is 59. I studied Larry Graham. I know almost his whole disogrsphy. At one time I bound 7 albums together and would pick 2 or 3 a day to play along with and I did this for the 1st 10 years of my playing... So I know where my roots are. If they happen to overlap Marcus? It is what it is...
So I have this playing in the background while I'm rewiring my basement studio, more listening than looking at the monitor, thinking Marcus playing and his bass sound incredible. Halfway thru, I notice that Marcus is wearing a different hat. Then i'm like what?? THAT AIN'T MARCUS! AND THAT AIN"T A FENDER!! OMG. Andre and Sire yall are both beasts!!! More confirmation that Sire basses are the truth!!! Excellent job!! Blown away!!!
That inexpensive Sire bass sounds fantastic. I am only just become aware of Sire and their relation with Marcus Miller. Looks like I may have to pick one up asap.
I'm starting playing bass thanks to this video. I know I wont sound as good as Andre, or play as well as he does, but hopefully gain someday the same confidence and attitude that he shows on this video. Masterpiece.
Thanks for the kind words...but...You never know where your journey will take you! If you don't mind...the main thing I would share with you is this: Never compare yourself to anybody else.. there's always somebody that's up & somebody that's down. Just get deep into your instrument, keep your head down and do the things you enjoy to the best of your ability. after that...let the chips fall as they may. Some people are gonna dig you, some people are gonna give you a thumbs down...no matter how proficient you are...so enjoy yourself and the journey every note of the way!
I'm trying to articulate how much I appreciate doing the song the way it recorded and implementing your own thing into it. Love it. The Sire is a wicked sounding bass. Your application brought out it true tone which leads me to the one thing that made me hold off on getting one. Did you notice the "E"& "B" string seemed to lose clarity during the hammer part of the solo? Almost deadened to a degree? Aside from that, great sound. Anyway I subscribed gonna listen to some more AB!!! 100!!!
Thanks Capt. but you know what man...I will say I have worked for every inch of the playing I am blessed with. Brother, I have practiced and studied relentlessly for decades and still practice minimum 4-5 hours daily. So it's a gift, but a gift I have sacrificed so much to earn... I say this to say, if we want it and are willing to work harder than anybody else ever has.. you can achieve a lot. God willing...
Andre Berry I heard that! I'm a jazz musician myself. My Dad was a jazz musician and he taught me and my siblings. Some would say that I inherited it..but I still practice like everyday and sometimes hate what I sound like. Lol So I agree with you, hard work brings results.. Tho you make it seem effortless
Andre Berry you are my favorite and my personal opinion is that you are the greatest of all time !!! You killed Marcus Miller on that cruise ship wow !!! I bet he won’t battle you ever again in life. You took his head off !!!
The Sire tone is amazing! +Andre Berry Keep doing what you're doing bro.It ain't easy to shrug off a deal-gone-bad situation but keep your head high, something greater will come along. Groove.
The bass player is fantastic! I loved the Elenor Rigby quote at the beginning. This man is telling stories with his bass! Unique and unusual in a world of clones.
Andre Berry....the next Marcus Miller. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE the quality and sound of a Sire bass! It will blow you away!! YOU ARE COOOOLLDDD my dude...sheesh
Thanks Phil, but you know what? I don't put myself in a league with those guys and it doesn't bother me at all not to be. Thank you for the kind words though! Play with attitude and blinders on and keep your head down and keep practicing. Don't stop to look around. Stay the course! Take care!
I'll give it to you, but remember, those three are Masters and Professors. The rest is up to the player's abilities. Personally, of those three I rather hear Stanley Clark for his humble beginnings with the likes of Chick Corea, Airto, Al DiMeola, Jean Luc Ponty, did I forget one??
Oh I was looking for this video that someone else uploaded, it's nice that you've uploaded it yourself , VERY VERY nice cover and awesome sound from that Sire , I'm planning on ordering one rightaway!!
+Andre Berry i ordered the exact same bass even the color lol i cant wait to put my hands on it especially that is my first bass im just starting to play.... it sounds really good...

Holy shit that sound on the Sire bass
that bass is 400 dolars btw. Marcus miller signature. She speakers for herself. Best decision I made. EVER. That bass rocks.
Hell yes, I got mine for 444 and it's better than any Fender I've ever laid my hands on
Baran Zadeoğlu. 'She Speakers?'
He changed originals electronics and pick up with aguilar sistem...very professional upgrade
Fabricio is full of shit and has no idea what he's talking about. Andre replied a year ago and said that the Sire v7 was all stock.
Man I can not watch this video enough!!! You definitely one of my favorite bass players Man!!!!! keep doing your thing Aundre!

Thanks man. What kind of Peavey? I used to have a Cirrus Bass I loved. Wish I had never sold it! Ah well, we all make mistakes!!
+Andre Berry I have a Peavey Foundation. Was bought for me by my pop back in the 80's. Just the wood tone, no paint, no clear coat.
Keep it forever!
Wow, that bassist is like a drum machine lol.. never missing a count. Amazing!
lol! thank you, but, oh, I miss alright!! but the whole key as told to me by Marcus Miller, is, how quickly you recover and adjust! How quickly you disguise your missteps! :0)
That’s the difference between an amateur and a professional, how fast you correct mistakes!
@@andreberry5618 Did Marcus Miller ever tell you to develop your own style and sound??

Thank you for the advise! It is very inspirational and motivating. I think i will frame it and put it up on my wall, no joking! Thank you again!
You're welcome Mr. Romero! I hope it helps!
I saw you perform with Mr. Sanborn last October at Royce Hall (UCLA). I thoroughly enjoyed the show!
I remember that one. Very cool! Thanks for listening!
My pleasure
I'm trying to articulate how much I appreciate doing the song the way it recorded and implementing your own thing into it. Love it. The Sire is a wicked sounding bass. Your application brought out it true tone which leads me to the one thing that made me hold off on getting one. Did you notice the "E"& "B" string seemed to lose clarity during the hammer part of the solo? Almost deadened to a degree? Aside from that, great sound. Anyway I subscribed gonna listen to some more AB!!! 100!!!

Man, Sanborn is even feeling this bass man really bad. Whoever you are...you have an unshakable gift. So jealous...
