Great jazz version with overtones of funk, with blues in the guitar solo. I had to replay Abraham Laboriel spanking his bass several times. For a big guy he can really high step over those cables on the floor, and in rhythm. these guys have been around the block a few times and it shows. Tight band!
Yeah reading the comments. So of course Jacos version is iconic and grooves like nothing else. The tune is in good hands here. Abe is such a great player and he adds his own thing. Still spicy but maybe not as greasy. That's ok tho. I hear guys trying to cop Jacos arrangement and it's like more wood shed please. More playing with great drummers. All these guys are world class. They're monsters and they were having fun. The guitarist to his credit played the melody so that we never forgot which tune it was. So much to learn from and enjoy here!
i dont see the fuss y'all are making about this rendition. So what if Jaco played it a certain way?, thats his style not Abraham Laboriel. As far as i am concerned they came together and put their own style to the song instead of being like the rest of players who tried to copy Jacos style.
AWESOME! Wish the piano would have left more room in the arrangement, especially for the guitarist when he was trying to comp. Damn pianos always take up too much space.
***** uuhhhh.... well especially when the piano plays full chords and doesn't stop playing ever throughout the song. He should have backed up and let the guitarist take over on some parts. Guitar and piano work well, but I feel like he was trying to show off a little too much.
He is wonderful but he paid no respect to Jaco’s right hand sensitivities in this song. Alas that’s his prerogative but it did rob the song of it’s original dynamicism.
My only point of criticism would be that the bass isn't very pronounced, which in my opinion brings down the energy of the song. That organ solo though...
Bass is subdued due to the small size of the room. This could have been "corrected" by EQ but doing so would have had (in my view at least) a negative impact on the intimacy of the rendition. The resulting tonal balance is unusual but I found it exquisite once used to it.
These guys are jammin'. Great players listening to each other, playing well, and with great dynamics. In one take! Can learn a lot listening to groups like this jamming in this context.
