    Great specialised fabrication/welding technique; my welding is no where near that standard. Great job Alan.
    The only points I think may help newer welders, is to use thermal indicating crayons for achieved temperature, "Tempilstik/s" is the most well known make. For a cheap, and very effective/professional heat retaining medium, then Vermiculite is easily obtainable (Fireplace/Flue retailers, and garden/plant suppliers) and cheap. Get a old style galvanised dustbin with lid to keep it in.
    Ambient temperature issues: if your ambient/work shop is less than 25° C ( 77°F), then preheat, heat hold, and post heat/cooling rate will be critical. Create a hot box/semi enclosed envelope to work in, the Vermiculite can be used as a kitty litter base, and filled/stuffed inside the voids etc to retain/spread heat.
    The Vermiculite comes in different chip sizes, 8 mm to 16 mm is most popular/available, and for this type of work is satisfactory, I prefer smaller size, gardening supplies have this, but cheaper wholesale.
    Looking forward to more motor vehicle excellence.

    "Gloven" that is some funny shit, I now hang out for these episodes even more than the MCM ones (still love them to- but really enjoy the hands on technical side of TSF) bought a cheap BA Turbo sedan which we are in the process of freshining up for some fun and runs on our local Springmount Dragstrip in FNQ, the offer of some sweet trailriding is always open if you ever come up this way, Cheers Linc

    Hey Al, I used to weld cast Cat manifolds for crack repair etc. in the late 90's. A suggestion for you to try, we used cast iron stick electrodes on the tig, but cracked all the flux off first. The rods didn't have the other crap steel in the centers and tigged pretty cleanly. You're spot on with the preheat and slow cool down. Love your work, love the show!

      The 300L6's from the late 80's are nearly bulletproof and some cam work and a turbo and you can have quite the beast. Came in van's and trucks. But to have a Barra would be glorious, far more exotic than any 2J or RB over here

    preheat to 500-1400f, weld-cooler the better, peen the hell outa it(needle scaler) , post-weld heat dropping slowly over an hour is usually good for a small part as this. The straw color of the waste-gate flange would indicate 450-700~F.. btw 309L is for steel to stainless specifically.

    • @ionstorm66
      @ionstorm66 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      316l filler will weld about anything ferrous though. 309 has a bit more chromium, which helps you not cook all of it out of the weld area, but the molybdenum in the 316l makes it weld like butter.

    • @alanbutler2579
      @alanbutler2579 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Buddy of mine needed a transmission for a Subaru Forester XT he had, manual 5 speed, he dug up a whole Forester X (Non turbo) for $100, was a piece of shit like the wagon you got but it got him what he needed.

    Lol . Yes sir I'm a welder many many years on the job . Retired . Yes you can weld cast . A couple of tips . If you purge the manifold by blanking off the inside of the manifold except for inlet hole for inert gas and a tiny outlet hole to allow no oxygen to contaminate the weld from behind. Constant heat is the key . Use of a chrome moly SS tig wire such as a 309mo will help the weld strength of dissimilarity metals to bind . Cool down after welding must be as slow as you can make it . Heat the whole finished welded job then drop it into a drum full of builders lime so it covers all the job . Lime will hold the heat for around 15 hrs . Also keep any moisture from entering the steel . Love your work .

You being a experienced guy with knowledge could share things you know. And it's pleasing to the eyes seeing make those welds man! Dosent have to be baked or heated that long, as long as you have a good thermometer to tell the heat you just have to make sure it's uniform. I've done a fair amount of old cast repair and as long as you heat uniformly you won't have an issue. Tip though for cracks in cast iron, drill the end of the cracks so it stops the break in the metal. If you don't it will just crack again in a few heat cycles.

      They can take up a lot of room that can be used for other tools that you use more frequently. We had one in school for welding cast, but it was only used for small parts which didn't come through very often. Doing it with a torch isn't "ideal" but it is certainly doable if you've had some practice and have the ability to stay focused on that single job for the required amount of time.

    • @arekingi
      @arekingi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah for sure that can be handy for pre-heating and slowing down cooling but ideally you wanna use a torch DURING the actual welding process anyways. I guess you could also say they perhaps don't need to pre-heat stuff nearly often enough to warrant getting one?

    Of course people say you can't weld cast. They are unknowingly broadcasting that they don't know what they are talking about. It requires a bit more technique and knowledge than your average "home mechanic" has. Guarantee those that are saying you can't are dudes that welded cast using a 110v mig welder from harbor freight then complain about the crap result.

      Don't get me wrong, Harbor Freight welders have come up in quality and features. Not to mention you can do a lot with lesser machines.
      Just thought that I would say they are showing their inexperience in the form of hubris. Perfect example of "arm chair quarterbacking"

      It's everywhere. Almost every hobby I have, there are snake oil salesmen, band wagoners and the perpetually stupid.
      Car culture "That engine won't fit" or "This brand/make is better for XXXX Reason"
      Audiophile "These $50 per foot cables sound better than those $0.50 per foot cables"
      Wood working "Japanese saws are better at everything when compared to European saws"
      Computers "Mac/PC are %100 the best computer for everything"
