Jose Figueroa if the car is not getting over halfway on the gauge. Or if your car doesn’t have a garage he may have to drive it to get it up to temp. I have a 2011 328i AWD and having issues with coolant temp/overheating. The water pump does not kick on, and it overheats. If I reset the water pump by pulling the fuse and plugging it back it works fine for a while, but it again stops working after a 100 miles or so. Any idea what it could be? Do I need to replace the pump and thermostat?
What are the reasons that make the water pump in the car 6 cylinder 530 BMW model 2006 does not stop working even when the car is turned off, it works on a clock
How long does this job take approximately. The pump on my BMW 2008 335XI is not pumping and the fan is on full as soon as I start the car..Thanks and great video....
Thanks for the fast reply. Does my scenario listed above sound like the pump. I tried the bleed test and no pumping. My expansion tank was empty so I thought that was the problem, but even after filling it I have the same problems as listed above...Also when this started I have cold air blowing out of my heater as well.... Thanks....
Is there anyway of knowing if it's already been replaced by a past owner? Do the replacement oem pumps have something on them to differentiate them from the failing ones?
BrotherRobb You can look at the date code on the water pump after removal, If it was the original pump the BMW logo would be on the pump, A lot of people and shops use pierburg pumps and some shops get them from the BMW dealer, You can also use Carfax and other services to find the maintenance history.
It seems to me that this water pump is more prone to failure. Why is it half plastic? I think on 328i RWD it is all aluminum. Not sure if the one on 328i RWD breaks as often as the one on 335i?
Hey I watched your video but my car’s fan goes crazy loud as soon as I turn on my car, my coolant is leaking from the top. The car won’t reach normal temp. When I turn it off and back on for about 20 mins, it drives and then the speed drops and it stops. Any idea if it’s the thermostat or the water pump ? Thanks
Btw, I have no engine light on, and this started happening after the dealer did the warranty for my airbag and the other stuffs. My car just reached 100K
Just picked up an 08 335i and service records show pump was replaced 12,000 miles ago. Took it to the dealer for some recall work and they recommended a new pump. I can see that is it slowly dripping coolant. My question is it possible that it could just be a loose or worn hose that is connected to the water pump itself that is causing the leak? Does anyone know where the weep hole is located on the pump itself so I can see if it is in fact leaking from the pump? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
I can’t tell if my water pump is going bad. I just replaced my alternator and my battery died and you know how it goes with bmws once one thing breaks more start breaking. My car isn’t over heating but, pushing it slightly Brings oil temps to 255ish. I tried bleeding/ testing my pump and it doesn’t seem to squirt water or make noise as it did before.
Are bad water pumps only on 335 and 535 or they go bad on 328i as well (year 2008). I read somewhere that mostly they go bad on 335 and 535 because of some plastic parts.
I am having difficulty securing the coolant pump electrical connector back in place. It slides back off and no matter how hard I push it in doesn’t reach a locking “click”. The tab is not broken and the connector looks in good shape. Does anyone have any tricks?
I’m getting a p0117 and 118 which is engine temp sensor. I’ve replaced the upper engine temp sensor so I’m assuming the temp sensor in the thermostat or the thermostat itself must be bad. Your thoughts please.
Crazy thing, I replaced the thermostat and it still didn’t work. I rechecked the engine temperature sensor with a multimeter and realized it wasn’t working. So, I put the old one back on and it worked perfectly. By the way, you forgot to mention how much swearing and cursing it takes to get the top bolt back in.😊

Hey Brian Thanks for the reply. I can get it on the thermostat but when i try to get the tstat in place the elbow is tight to the exhaust charge pipe where the fmic connects to. Hope it makes sense to you
Hi. My car overheats, I think the thermostat is not working. The car still can be driven. Not loss of power, which mean the water pump is still working. Right?
idesigner The only way to tell the water pump is working is to hook up a scan tool to it and pull codes. And if there is a code for there’s most like a problem with the system either blown fuse or pump is not working. Also you could turn the pump on and off with the scan tool to check operation. It is very common for the thermostat to stick and it could be the whole problem
I have a 2008 BMW 328i at 115,000 miles. Started overheating. I have a BMW scan tool that says my thermostat is stuck, maybe open or close. Would I need to replace the water pump since I'm switching the thermostat? Thinking maybe the water pump might go bad in a few thousand miles. Any feedback is appreciated
Culajay2010 my opinion would be yes. Would be a hug piece of mind to change them both. I work on my own 335i all the time and I wouldn’t steer you wrong.
93_basemap I did the water pump test, where I turn the fan on and press the gas pedal for 15 seconds with only the power on. The water pump worked fine.
I have the same symptoms as well with mine. I think the water pump can be intermittently failing. I also think that most BMW thermostats are designed to fail in the open position, and the engine will run cold instead of hot.
Hi there! I would like to ask you - do anyone has an idea how to change water pump on car with electronic power steering? The electromotor on steering did not provide space to remove the pump. There is no easy acces.. Do I have to remove all electronic power steering out of the car?
@Val Bigfish after all - my mechanic had to done it. Steering rack had to be removed as you mentioned. When you have EPS, water pump replacement is definitely not DIY job.
I just took my car to the dealer to check why my oil level sensor was showing inactive and they told me there is no communication between the water pump and the oil level sensor< I still don't understand how the hell the water pump is linked to the oil level sensor! my car doesn't overheat and the water pump is working fine question should I need to change it and spend the 1000 dls on the parts plus my labor to change? Will be this be a sign that sooner is going to fail? Thanks for the feedback
Changed it once on mine with just jack stands.... was a nightmare and quite early in my learning phase... took me a while day to do that shit. Just yesterday i had to do the alternator... another stupidly overcomplicated nightmare.

Great video, I wondered if there was a way to do this without taking the whole damn front apart
How long did this job take you start to finish? I've also heard that it's more difficult on a MT car.
Josef Morken if I remember right 3.50 hours.
about 4hours if the clips of the coolant hoses wont come off easily.
just ordered the parts wish me luck boys. will check back in a week or so
I do wish you would luck That everything goes smooth. Thank you for watching!
@@HowtoAutomotive no prob have your video in my playlist for when it arrives wed, also doing this on jackstands its going to be a fight, will check back.
How did it go?
@@shonevans2830 went great thanks to how to automotive. Been running great since I swapped out my WP and Therm
@@startingtech3900 I'm having a nasty coolant leak, not sure if its a torn hose or the actual pump(im banking on the latter) :/. If so ill have to give this a try, and will need all the luck I can get!
What do you mean by rotating the bolt 90°?
Respect my pimpin let means to turn the bolt an additional 90°.
Did you know water pump codes rather pending or current, actually causes power reduction 😮 ?
Excellent vidéo. Thx a lot.
Thank you for watching!
Hey Brian Thanks for the reply. I can get it on the thermostat but when i try to get the tstat in place the elbow is tight to the exhaust charge pipe where the fmic connects to. Hope it makes sense to you
Kevin Kealoha is the new part exactly the same as the old one? It should go right back on if it's the same. Double check your rounding out the hoses.
Terry Slay so if my thermostat was stuck open or close, my car wouldn't be overheating is what your saying?
@@Culajay2010 if one of the two are failing I'd definitely recommend replacing both.
excellent video
Thank you!
Do you know if 2008 535i procedure is pretty much the same?
Patrick N. Yes it’s the same. May even have a little bit more room.
little less room in the 325i then? lol think i may be doing this job this weekend..
Hi I'm having a hard time connecting the small hose connector to the thermostat need help
Kevin Kealoha if it's one of the ones with the quick connect you need to lubricate the seal.
I just took my car to the dealer to check why my oil level sensor was showing inactive and they told me there is no communication between the water pump and the oil level sensor< I still don't understand how the hell the water pump is linked to the oil level sensor! my car doesn't overheat and the water pump is working fine
question should I need to change it and spend the 1000 dls on the parts plus my labor to change? Will be this be a sign that sooner is going to fail? Thanks for the feedback
Yup that's what happens before the water pump fails. Mine showed the "oil level inactive" error in the iDrive and the next day my water pump failed.
Changed it once on mine with just jack stands.... was a nightmare and quite early in my learning phase... took me a while day to do that shit. Just yesterday i had to do the alternator... another stupidly overcomplicated nightmare.
Anybody that's watching this or you have an xi model they always tell you got to lift the motor you can get in there with a quarter inch Drive wobbly socket 6-point instead of a Torx socket you can use a 10 mm but 3/8 fits tighter there's always a way around these stupid bolts on these BMWs also works when you're dealing with the upper housing coolant leak
Very good details 👍🏻
Very informative video!
Thank you.
