    A truly wonderful heartwarming story. It's the kind of thing I wanted to do. The kind of life I dreamed of ... Alas, I never made it till now. Kinda sorta!
    I have a little over 3 acres of timber in middle Tennessee. I'm going to use the trees to build a house, and turn the property into a garden/food forest.
    It might be slow going since I'm single and just turned 65.
    The raft down the Yukon part of the story pretty much pulled my trigger as well. I have been in Alaska twice before. the first time I was in logging camps, but I got hurt and had to return to the lower 48. The second time I spent a winter at my brother's place just outside of Homer. For those who have never been to Alaska I can only say ... A humbling Grandeur of indescribable beauty. And the vibe? The feeling ... Well, Words just can't touch it.

    You still have the small cabin too looks like. Pretty exciting venture you shared with us. Wanted to do this when I was younger, but none of the women I dated would have been happy in such a small cabin or want to help build it.

      No I don't have that cabin anymore. I built the big one in 2003, and my biggest and best one in 2009...I have a series where I am in the process right now of building one....its should show up right at the end of this video ( a link to the series )

    I have a very simple cabin in Northern ontario, i can agree with you totally.I made every thing with recycled left overs and my frame is pine logs even roof trust and the roof is clear polycarbin fibre so have 100 % day light. I m planning a 4 season log house with solar heated floor and living space in the loft. it will also be 100 % run on small solar system 200 watts and 2 batteries. I loved what i saw keep doing.

    Ya'll built that. That's incredible! I used to frame custom houses with my dad, but we had power tools, and nail guns, a yard crane and a fork lift! It's really cool to see someone do this the old fashioned way. Ply wooding the roof, was always my least favorite part.

    I've lived in Alaska for 10 years and my wife is born raised Alaskan and we both had never head of a log-raft. Heck my sister has been living in Fiarbanks for the last 3 years and she never head of them either. We are very intrigued.

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our friend Neil Eklund has been building log rafts for 40 + years on the yukon river. Its just what he loves to do. Back 100+ years ago there were log rafts on the river all the time during the gold rush. Even today in some of the villages you find parts of log rafts where someone floated something big downriver from the bridge. Neil only ran a log raft ONE year as a business for the tourists....all the rest of the times he's selling firewood, or taking dogs to the trapline or just plain rafting for the fun of it.

    • @27Zangle
      @27Zangle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That really is awesome. What I find funny is all the book in my collection about the Alaskan interior and gold rush never mentions or shows one log raft. I feel like these books are missing a really cool part of history and surely some books do mention log rafts, but none of mine.

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      most of the rafts back in the gold rush were built in the Yukon territory and floated up to Dawson city. There was definitely never a raft floated into Fairbanks because rafts only go down stream LOL. and fairbanks is way up the Tanana river. I saw the skeleton of a big old raft in Rampart. Someone probably bought a truck in FBX and took it to the bridge and then rafted it to Rampart. Its a super cool thing to do even if its just a small reft with a tent or two.....unforgetable experience.

      I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. One of the things I LOVE about youtube is its an outlet to share experiences with the world. All these early years in Alaska it was constantly on my mind how isolated from the world we were.....in regards to being able to share our lives with other people. Its like living in a vacuum. You would send family members pictures but you wished they could be there to be part of the adventure.......you tube has given me an outlet to share with people like I had always wished to be able to do. I'm stoked everyone has enjoyed this video.

    • @bobashmore6442
      @bobashmore6442 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first time I saw one of Brooke's videos, I seem to recall it was her answer to Dave Canterbury's 5x5 challenge (might have been called something else but that's what comes to mind), I commented on how young she looked in it and how amazed I was that someone so young, as well as so small, could do so well on that challenge. She replied saying pretty much the same thing you did, that she's older than I thought she was. Of course I would never ask a ladies age but I can say that from both of your responses I'd say I'm definitely off because I guessed her to be about 25. My wife is the same way, we're both into our fifth decade now (I will go no further or my wife would rightfully beat me senseless) but she is constantly guessed as being in her mid 30's, so I know how that goes. Wish I was still being guessed that young! Alas, no. Most folks guess me within about five years of my actual age. Fortunately not older though, at least not yet.

      Definitely enjoyed this video. I like watching craftsmen at work, especially when they clearly know what they're doing. The photos gave it the feel of an old time documentary and the music you chose was spot on for that as well.

      I always loved travel-logs. It was real fun narrating this vid...and here's a fun fact.....I played all the background music on acoustic Guitar in one long take to match what was going on in the video.

    That is really cool! Well done video. Hardly conventional log building, but easily constructed compared to saddled notched,norwegian corners or whatever! It looks good! like to see more! Can tell you know that you have construction experience, just by the terminology that you use. More please!

      Thanks Joel. Actually Ive been a builder most all my life. I built stuff as a kid, took building trades in high school, built 4 houses Brooke and I lived in and was concrete contractor for years.....I was pretty young in this video!

    Skinny squares shovel works great for peeling logs

    • @Bushradical

      Never tried a shovel...but I have my doubts how it would work on this cabin. The logs were super dry and they peeled hard.

      @@Bushradical is how we done 3 cabins one 60 by 80 but here in Alabama logs might peel differently
