I'm retired and and absolutely love to watch your videos! I always dreamed of building my own home with my husband but he was a very busy drug enforcement officer and never had spare time for anything but sleep and precious little of that. Also, his parents built their own home when he was in junior high school and that pretty much ruined any chance of him ever wanted to do that again! Ha! He never denied me anything (not that I ever wanted much) but he told me at the beginning of our 38 years together before the Lord took him home that I might as well accept that he wasn't building any more houses. His parents worked him hard! Your videos give me such enjoyment! So, please video more, if you can! I love it! Oh, and one little piece of advice. You and your pretty wife enjoy every single moment the Lord grants you together....... life goes by so quickly!

This is the face of somebody who is ready to get out of a tent. Hahahaha! The love and faith of people who THINK they have a good idea is maybe the best ever. This is wonderful!

A painter was taking a walk when a frog spoke to him and said, “If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess.”
He picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.
The frog spoke again and said, “If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I’ll become your girlfriend.”
The painter took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
The frog spoke again and said, “If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I’ll become your wife.”
The painter took the frog out of his pocket again, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog said, “What is the matter? I’m a beautiful princess. Why wont you kiss me?”
The painter took the frog out of his pocket and said, “Look, I’m a busy painter. I doent have time for a girlfriend or a wife, but a talking frog, now that, is cool.

I hope so. Homesteading really wasn't a thing back then like it is today. With "tiny homes" and off grid living" being so popular now.....Hopefully there will be lots of young people building cabins in the future.

    • @Longtrailside
      @Longtrailside 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Very true my friend. Back then it was looked down upon, now its the new rage, or in thing youngsters want to do. Same with the RV/Travel trailer life its exploded in the lat 10 to 15 years but the last 5 it's been intense. You can't find one decent now for a reasonable price, without taking out a loan or a mortgage on it.

That face isn’t the face of someone ready to get out of a tent it’s the face of true happiness living with your love and just enjoying life, she did care if you had to cuddle in the backseat of a truck to sleep she was and is still to this day happy. This is the same smile I have had since 17 until now at 30 with the same man i love and it didn’t matter if we were living with our daughter in a tiny bedroom while we built our home or in the home we built I was and am to this day happy to live with my best friend and my love just as Brooke is in that photo and still is today. ♥️♥️

A truly wonderful heartwarming story. It's the kind of thing I wanted to do. The kind of life I dreamed of ... Alas, I never made it till now. Kinda sorta!
I have a little over 3 acres of timber in middle Tennessee. I'm going to use the trees to build a house, and turn the property into a garden/food forest.
It might be slow going since I'm single and just turned 65.
The raft down the Yukon part of the story pretty much pulled my trigger as well. I have been in Alaska twice before. the first time I was in logging camps, but I got hurt and had to return to the lower 48. The second time I spent a winter at my brother's place just outside of Homer. For those who have never been to Alaska I can only say ... A humbling Grandeur of indescribable beauty. And the vibe? The feeling ... Well, Words just can't touch it.

We had two adults, a 17 year old boy and 8 year old girl living in a 10' x 12' shed with three cats and a doberman living both in and out. The boy and I built our homestead, getting it weathered in just before the snow came. All we have are still pictures from those days, but seeing your video inspired me to show the pictures and narrate like you did. Great video, thanks!

Sometimes all we have is pictures to use but it makes a nice documentary to use just pictures. Good luck!

When Brooke and I got married, we were care takers in a campground in Sitka, spent the winter in the Aleutian islands, bought an old house and wintered in the U.P. of Michigan, then built and lived in this little cabin, then the next. We spent a lot of time in bush Alaska, rafted down the yukon with Neil Eklund, ( 2000) worked at a remote wilderness resort.......a whole bunch of stuff they would never advise you to do in school. But having that backstory opened up all kinds of opportunities later. I feel like we walked right onto ALONE because of how we had spent our life and our backstory. When we did the national geographic series Yukon River Run...we weren't "cast" for it.... it was our home area, Neil and Lauro were our friends, and we actually had lived that life. The things in life that Brooke and I chose to do, opened the doors for us. Do what you love to do BB.

      Mr. Bad example,
I don't blame you. That is just South of me. We use to travel down just South of Murphysboro to Deer hunt, until they moved North 80 miles to us. Fell in love with that country, thought I was in another state. Couldn't believe the differences between East side and West side of Southern Illinois. But there wasn't any jobs down there in the 1970's. The coal mines were all shut down and economy collapsed .
But the deer taste a lot better up here living on corn and beans :-) ( East Central IL.) Just South of the flat land.

I've written on Brooke's channel videos, but this is my first on yours. I've been married for 30 years, and I know a bit about having a wife. Any lady willing and eager to get dirty, work hard for what she wants, and keep a smile while doing it is worth far more than her weight in gold. You and she are so blessed to have discovered you are compatible in doing what you love. That is so rare, my friend, that you better hang on with both hands and never let go! Your wife's videos are helping to keep me sane while I extricate myself from a city. I'll be needing to build a cabin myself soonish, hint, hint.

I grew up in a bus, and this reminds me a lot of that. Washing dishes into a 5 gallon bucket. Hauling water, heating it over propane or a Coleman stove, building out the cabinets etc. out of scrap wood.

What a great video Dave. Thanks for sharing you memories with us. You are fortunate to have met a woman who enjoyed that lifestyle. Maybe in one of your videos you could do a piece about how you build corners. It seems to me a good strong corner in a structure is important but I just can’t visualize it. Again, thanks for this great video.

Hey CJ. I may do a video series about how to build this style of cabin at some point. This is called by some a "Hudson Bay Cabin". to build a corner post you take a log about 16" across and cut it in half lengthwise. Then you cut each piece in half. Basically you wind up with four pieces of 1/4 log. The outside of the log goes to the outside of the cabin and the 90 sawn surfaces go to the inside.
