I’m a 67-year-old woman. This time last year I built a shed pretty much on my own because of what I learned from you. The only help I needed was to raise the walls and my grandkids wanted to help me with the simple projects. They were pretty proud of their grandma. It felt so rewarding to know I finished the shed, it’s still standing (LOL), has no leaks and it looks good. I’m already thinking about another structure to build. Your wife Brooke inspires me. You teach me. I thank both of you so much!
You go girl! I’m a beginner ish diy girl and at 56 I’m amazed at what I’ve accomplished! Now I want to build a cabin! Luv these videos and how exciting about your shed!! Great and inspiring!!

I just want you to know that videos by you. This one in particular. Convinced me to decide to build a cabin of my own very similar to this instead of an expensive foundation home. It made me realize more minimalist homes like this deserve a resurgence. Because, especially in remote areas. They are truly the best way to live. Sincerely, the now 24 year old, debt free, self sufficient man you helped create. Thank you.

@EarthSurferUSA My attitude is that you shouldn't confuse advancement with materialistic possession. And that if we deprogram the idea of a 5 bedroom 4 bathroom $900,000 dollar house being necessary to "advance" and begin to live modestly. We will shift our focus on the things that truly matter in this world. Whatever that may be in our own minds. Consumerism and being better than the person next to us has invaded the subconscious of a large portion of America as of late. Especially as technology advances. I think your misunderstanding of my point doesn't come from a position of misunderstanding itself. But possibly more from a confusion between the words "primative" and "minimalist" because my cabin is larger (35×30 with 9 foot ceilings and a loft and a 16×30 foot porch to be more precise. But I built it all on family land. I did it piecemeal, bit by bit, and I did it without taking out strenuous mortgages that will put me and my soon to be fiancé in debt for the next 30 years. I built bigger because we want children. I built with HVAC. Because I live in Texas and summers can be in excess of 100° for weeks on end. But my house is simple when compared to most homes. That doesn't make me a Neanderthal. It makes me and my wife to be people that understand that sometimes some cattle and a modest home with people that love you are more important than the price tag on the things around you. THAT is the direction my attitude is in.
@EarthSurferUSA I'd venture to ask, as someone who clicked on, and hopefully watched this video in its entirety. What is your view on it? Do you think simple homes advance us and let us focus on more important things. Or do you think modernity helps us stave off "primative" habits?
Its a lot of work, and double the cost for subflooring not to mention time, I'd tyvek or reflectix under the joists, (something breathable would be nice) and then just put in the insulation from the top if you even needed the extra R value.

Like any good maker, it all seems to just happen, but so much goes into it, the doing, filming, editing and I always come away feeling similar to reading a good book, entertained as well as educated and those are two of my favorite things. As a child I lived in some really bad houses. When I learned how to frame up a lumber, I was amazed at what I could do, and thought how some people don’t believe in their selves to even try. DIY channels helped, and so does y’all’s take and step by step, prepare and go for it. Inspiration to live the best life you can in the woods where nobody wants to put forth the effort. Get connected folks to life .
I love watching you build Dave. Learn a lot of techniques. At 61 years old I build my first 12 X 16 cabin in the woods. Love that space. You are so strong lifting those walls!!! What a great cabin you’ve built. ❤🎉
What an absolute therapy is this. Side effects of chemo are getting really heavy to take on to, but then it is videos as this which makes me be positive about future. Hard to believe something this simple can be this amazingly up-lifting. Thanks a lot for sharing this video with us.
Dave, what a great attitude and demeanor you have man. I don't normally watch 50-minute videos on off-grid cabin builds but I have to say your sense of being one with nature, your calmness, and your skill had me hooked. Good job!
Thank you My Friend… Memories of my Grandfather’s Place in… Shingleton, MI (Poplar Bluff Cabins) He taught My Dad & My Dad taught Me…. …doesn’t get any better than that… …and thank you for teaching Everyone 😊 “Thanks for the ride” 🙏🏻💟☮️
I don't know which is more impressive, that you built a cabin by yourself or that you didn't have a thousand sheets of paper with measurements and directions flying all over the place. You are an inspiration.

Dave - you have such a beautiful way of working. It comes so effortlessly to you! I envy that. Thanks for the inspirational video. Many tips and tricks learned here! 💛
Been collecting up materials and going to be starting my cabin this spring.. Thanks for the inspiration bush probably wouldn't have ever tried if I hadn't watched your videos.. excited to see your new cabin.. 👍
That cabin is beautiful enough to motivate anyone to build it. Probably a little bit pricier than your "cabin anyone can build", but definitely worth it.
Just wanted to let you know me, my three kids all 5 years of age and younger are watching this with breakfast this morning. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and providing good family entertainment that’s educational. My 5 year old son wants to build a cabin with me now.
It is so satisfying to watch. My grandfather and my father were both master carpenters. To this day, I still love the smell of lumber, and I can just imagine what this smells like. Just beautiful. ❤
Your timing is impeccable. I discovered you last year when I was home sick for a week. Well, nearly one year later, I'm out for another week and you build another cabin. Perfect. Thank you.
How nice! The algorithm thought to pop you up on my feed, Jan 2025.! He's everything the comments say, and I'm enjoying every minute of his unique work. From NZ.
Such a knowledgeable and talented guy! I stumbled on some of your building and couldn't pull away...it was therapeutic! I'm a older guy so some of it is beyond my ability, but could envision the whole process as you went along. I think you have a very important tool some of us may not have..."PATIENCE". It is a pleasurer to view your work, thanks for sharing...🙂
Dave, love your cabin builds especially your peaceful demeanor while doing so. I'm nearly 70 yo now and have built many structures in Colorado and New Mexico so I can relate to the pleasant atmosphere of building in the woods. Thanks for these builds of yours for my trip down memory lane. Keep up the fine work, sir, and say hi to Brooke for me.
Yeah I was just thinking about how I was at twenty years old, I was high energy just trying to fly through projects with an attitude. I'm 42 now and alot calmer so I have to laugh at how I used to operate
I'm 66 and am about to get my second hip replacement. When I get it done in February, I should be recovered by Spring, and it will be JUST in time for me to make one of these getaway cabins, on property we own, deep in the Maine woods. I will be a hero to my wife, and I will have Dave Whipple to thank. Thanks so much for all your videos, Dave. I know you don't put many out now, so I REALLY look forward to each one. THIS one was great, and was a true inspiration!! I'm about to watch it again!
My wife and I just finished watching you and Brooke on Alone for the first time. We were rooting for you the whole time. You guys did awesome! I love the cabins that you build. It's given me some ideas for the little cabin we hope to build some day. When the time is right. Thank you. 👍
I do so love watching your Cabin Build videos. You do such an amazing job building them. They're so homey and cozy. Who wouldn't want to stay in one.👍👍💖💗🎄🎄
I absolutely love your videos they're so relaxing to watch and you've got a voice that I could listen to all day long! Also very knowledgeable and he shows the easiest ways of building all the things he builds thank you Dave and keep them coming
I love how you put those cabin posts in, packing the dirt down around them. My dad taught me to do that, and it's really served me well. I've never seen anyone else do that. I've got posts in the ground that I put in that way 50 years ago, and they're still standing strong. Thanks for this video and best of luck to you.
Dave, You are blessed with so much talent and common sense! You and Brooke have been my inspiration in so many things I have started doing from the beginning of the first video of Girl in the woods then your channels! You both have kept my dream alive and turning it in to a reality, slowly for a old feisty 60 year old woman! LoL 😂 Thank you to you both for more things than you will ever know. I love you both as if I have known you for a lifetime.
What a masterpiece!!! Back when I was a kid, late 60s early 70s, my dad, brother in law and myself built a cabin in Central Utah at Panguitch Lake....everything you did reminded of those days, epic build....We didn't season the wood stove outside, lit that thing up right inside. It was awesome!!! Thanks for reminding me about that great time!! Enjoy your place! Jim
What a beautiful cabin in the woods. It always amazes me how you and Brooke are able to do so many skilled and labor intensive things, making it look easy.
I love these videos. I can't even hammer a nail straight but it's so relaxing. You and Brooke are 2 of my favorite TH-camrs!! Thanks so much for sharing this process, it never gets old
Thanks so much for detailing this entire process. Based on yours and Brooke's videos, I built a 8 x 6 shed with some of the techniques you both used...in the middle of DC...with a small Mazda 3 to transport all of the lumber. Your can-do attitudes are very inspiring so thank you both.
Love your videos!!! Been watching for a few years. Now I am watching from my own cabin i built last summer, with the jotul F602 hot in the corner!! Thanks for being such an inspiration!
You are such and inspiration. Three years ago I started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity building houses so that I could start to develop skills to do something like this build. Thank you for all you do and everyone out there should consider volunteering with a local Habitat. It has been the most rewarding thing I have done in my life. I do time lapse videos of our build days and now if I would only post them on my channel, maybe more folks will get an idea of what it entails and come join in on the fun. Cheers
Wasnt planning on watching the entire video but I was hooked! everything was done so well and it really kept me engadged the entire time. I was sitting in bed with my wife and remember laughing a few of the cracked jokes! Also idolizing the work being done by one individual. Great job!
These cabin building compilation videos with your insightful voice-over are always a pleasure to come back to on occasion. They're very soothing and calming to watch and listen to, especially for when I have downtime in this stressful period of my life from roughly the beginning of 2019 until now. While I personally would never attempt or do something of this nature let alone achieve something of this magnitude and great on my own, I still enjoy learning about and observing people's various lifestyles and what they value and cherish in life, and your authenticity and rustic living has rubbed off on me in a positive way; appreciating the simple things in life and finding worth and use out of seemingly worthless objects and abandoned items. Also, I can relate to your disdain and reluctance towards the procedure of insulation; I dislike doing stuff that is mundane and tedious in life that is similar to what insulation is like for people in the construction and craftsmanship industries.
I had a 911 moment in 2019. I put a cabin on my property in the country. I'm glad I did as friends and relatives needed a break from the city during the riots and the madness. Best guest house investment.
I love your little cabins !! I'm in Green Bay and it's amazing that people don't realize 4-5 hrs away is pure beautiful wilderness !!! Keep building brother 👍👍👍
Watching you build this cabin brought tears to my eyes, longing for a simpler life and missed opportunities from this old woman. It's beautiful to watch you build it with your knowledge and simple tools. What talent. Thank you. God bless you and your family.
I think the one thing that impressed me most about this video was that you could build this cabin all by yourself! Most videos show at least two people building a cabin and some people have only themselves to figure out how to do building a cabin alone. I am definitely gonna have to subscribe to your channel and go and view some of your other videos--what a joy to watch!
Can’t tell you how much I loved watching you do this. I used to help my dad with all our building projects and it brought back fond memories. Wish I could download all the information he has in his brain. I live in town now, much to my chagrin, but watching your videos and your wife’s, is the next best thing to being there. Thanks for making and sharing them. ❤️
You are so fortunate to have your skills, patience, and fortitude. I always wanted to build a cabin since I was about 10 yrs. old and tried to tie some branches together in the woods that weren't mine. I'm a 74 year old woman now so unless I win the lotto I don't think it's going to happen. It's fun to watch you guys but it's always more fun to watch a woman do it because she has a lot more challenges.
@@RVBadlands2015 I just assumed that she meant the physicality. Women are just not as strong. The mind may be very willing but the body perhaps not so much.
Dave,I've been here the whole time. I watched you build your whole cabin from start to finish. Their might be some people that are jealous because you build so many cabins in the woods but I say if you own alot of land go for it. Its your property ,do as you wish. I watched Brooke build her cabin and I love hers just as I'll love you cabin. A fire is nice on a cold snowy day. I watch your channel whenever your on and I watch Brookes channel also. Thank you for sharing this video. Love it. P.S. Don't forget ,get out and get happy.

Hey brother, I’ve been following you and your wife for a while and i am always blown away by you guys. This cabin looks beautiful. You should get the plans for the cabin made with a list of materials and gear links, i will buy it in an heartbeat. I would love to have a cabin like this bought on my property in Portugal and in England. Keep up the amazing work and God bless you and the family
You inspire a lot of people. I watch your videos all the time even though I have seen them. I like watching them. It takes me away in my mind to a place like what you have there. When I get well I am going to try to build a cabin like this one. Please don't ever stop building and teaching us.
Dave, this was such an entertaining and instructional video. I don’t really have a lot of construction knowledge and this helped me to understand why things are put together the way they are. What an amazing thing you’ve made. Thank you for posting this.
Dave, you continue to make the best cabin build videos! The commentary is excellent, little tricks on rafters and walls, and just top quality builds. Thanks!
Your skill set is incredible, it’s super relaxing watching you build these cabins, I love your channel, and hope you and the wife have an amazing Christmas!
Simply fantastic. Thank you for sharing your great work. Thank you for filming it so masterfully. Thank you for not filling your video with silly movie clips. Thank you for not repeating yourself. Thank you for not trying to be a standup comedian. Yes, You Tube gives so many pet peeves!
As a Michigan resident probably not too far from you, I can honestly say that you picked the perfect year to build this cabin. The late summer and fall weather up here has been outstanding for any outdoor project. Now you can dig that root crop garden and get your full UP on.
@@fidentia10 I'm not in real estate. The eastern UP is swampy and old glacial wash terrain while the western half is hilly and remote. Price of land goes down when you cross the Bridge. Draw a 40-mile circle around Munising and start there.
I love the videos you & Brooke put out! Very informative, but also showing you can create/produce projects in a way the rest of us could replicate if we so wished! What I love most is the beautiful scenery of woods & water! I may not get to watch them the very first day, especially in this busy holiday season, but watch them I do. DIY channels helped, and so does y’all’s take and step by step, prepare and go for it. Inspiration to live the best life you can in the woods where nobody wants to put forth the effort. Get connected folks to life .
thanks
What you really need to know, you learn by doing.

I love watching you build Dave. Learn a lot of techniques. At 61 years old I build my first 12 X 16 cabin in the woods. Love that space.
You are so strong lifting those walls!!! What a great cabin you’ve built. ❤🎉
Wow! That's inspiring Liz!
She likes the strong menzes. lol
What an absolute therapy is this. Side effects of chemo are getting really heavy to take on to, but then it is videos as this which makes me be positive about future. Hard to believe something this simple can be this amazingly up-lifting. Thanks a lot for sharing this video with us.
Saying a prayer that you're doing good & going strong!! God Bless!!
Dave, what a great attitude and demeanor you have man. I don't normally watch 50-minute videos on off-grid cabin builds but I have to say your sense of being one with nature, your calmness, and your skill had me hooked. Good job!
What Ricardo said!!!!!
I agree! ❤
Hi Ricardo, I agree, with you. Dave is calm and informative and he gets the job done. 1st Class.

Yes indeed 😅 I Watch the entire video because he shows everything and it’s awesome 👌🏽
Thank you My Friend…

I don't know which is more impressive, that you built a cabin by yourself or that you didn't have a thousand sheets of paper with measurements and directions flying all over the place. You are an inspiration.
It's not a house in really isn't difficult to build.
He's been doing it for 21 years.
It's all "muscle memory" now - lol.
That circular saw appeared in nature.. cool build though, the drop in floor is great
Well, pretty sure a cabin only needs a drawing or two, and he probably did that himself too.
@@haydencourtney7419 Circular saw,---built by man's nature. by our nature, we are smarter than Beavers. If we were as free as Beavers, we would have built a lot more by our nature. Man is part of nature too, or we would not be here.
This guy's a genius!! He makes me wanna be a better person!! He has a video n he talks about how we're meant to build our own things, my son n I have 3.2 acres in Tennessee n we can't wait to start our building journey! Thank you and don't stop the videos!😊
You’ve done an OUTSTANDING JOB, especially by yourself. I love what you’ve done and accomplished
We'll follow along
@Lillian Sawyer what does gseg mean? 🤔
"some cherry pie filling, who'se got it figured out now"? I love it! Awesome work man, keep it up!
That cabin is beautiful enough to motivate anyone to build it. Probably a little bit pricier than your "cabin anyone can build", but definitely worth it.
It is lovely
Just wanted to let you know me, my three kids all 5 years of age and younger are watching this with breakfast this morning. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and providing good family entertainment that’s educational. My 5 year old son wants to build a cabin with me now.
What a great way to spend a Sunday winter afternoon, watching you build a cabin !!!! Thanks Dave 👍
There are a lot of people building cabins but what makes your channel unique is that you and your wife build these houses alone or with each other.
Oh man I can't wait to sit down and watch this! It's been a tough week and Dave's adventures put me in a different place. Thanks Dave!
From NZ.
Dude! You're one hell of a carpenter/artist. America needs more real men like you. Thanks for making this video.
It’s absolutely relaxing to watch you and Brooke build off grid cabins. It makes me want to build one of my own.
Great job!
thanks
You're a heckuva contractor, and then you can also throw some comedy in there, you make us laugh and you're darn good at your work, that's a big plus
GREAT JOB, CAME OUT LOOKIN' REAL FINE, KEEP SAFE AMIGO...
Good luck to you on the hip replacement & God bless. Merry Christmas Jimmy.
I’m 52 and hoping to get my hip replacement next week so I can get back to my goats.
Dave is straight to the point ,easy to understand and explains his process using basic tools. really appreciate thank you!
My wife and I just finished watching you and Brooke on Alone for the first time. We were rooting for you the whole time. You guys did awesome!
I love the cabins that you build. It's given me some ideas for the little cabin we hope to build some day. When the time is right. Thank you. 👍
Thanks
Dave you are amazing. You make it look easy. Lots of hard work and the pay off is absolutely beautiful.
I really like watching people build things. It always amazes me to see how you do it all by yourself, especially those walls!
Never a dull moment in this hour long tube! Thank you for showing the whole process .
You bet!
Right on!
thanks for letting me spend the day with you. i love watching you all live. then you finish with a beautiful sun set. thank you .
This is by far my favorite build you’ve done to date! I just keep rewatching it!
Thanks
Dave builds these cabins with such perfection, watching these cabin builds are so relaxing .
Far from perfection..
Dave, I sure enjoy watching your videos! You make off the grid look inspiring and a much needed way of life! Thanks for posting!
A really nice video. No mugging for the camera. No silliness. Enjoyable and calming. You're a hard worker. Thanks for posting this.
LoL 😂
Thank you to you both for more things than you will ever know. I love you both as if I have known you for a lifetime.
Thanks Glenda
What a masterpiece!!! Back when I was a kid, late 60s early 70s, my dad, brother in law and myself built a cabin in Central Utah at Panguitch Lake....everything you did reminded of those days, epic build....We didn't season the wood stove outside, lit that thing up right inside. It was awesome!!! Thanks for reminding me about that great time!! Enjoy your place!
Jim
Thanks JIm
What a beautiful cabin in the woods. It always amazes me how you and Brooke are able to do so many skilled and labor intensive things, making it look easy.
As usual, as advertised, man I'd give anything to be able to breath again. You are engaged in doing what I used to do. Used being the operative word.
The quietness and the good music, probably the best video I've ever watched here in TH-cam
Cheers
My husband and I volunteered for a summer with habitat putting roofing on. I enjoyed it and learned a lot.
😂🎉🎉🎉😢
You’re so cool Dave! You make it look easy and you’re a gifted teacher. Thank you for the inspiration.
Missed ya!!! So happy to see ya'll again!!! Absolutely love the way you think ahead in your construction and your time saver steps.
And what challenges would that be.
@@RVBadlands2015 I just assumed that she meant the physicality. Women are just not as strong. The mind may be very willing but the body perhaps not so much.
Loved this entire video, it shows just how simply we can build a home for ourselves.
Love it. P.S. Don't forget ,get out and get happy.
thanks

Such a pleasure to watch your builds, you’re so talented. You take good care Dave, God bless you and Brooke in all of your adventures. You make this old lady very happy and at peace with every vid, love you guys!❤❤🙏🏼🙏🏼
You are a great and inspiring teacher, a true American man. Thanks so much. I was inspired to make my cabin.
Always the wood stove, love to see it ! :D
Dave, you've done a fantastic job on this cabin in the woods. It will give you many happy days with those you cherish. God bless.
You make building look so easy Dave!! I'd LOVE to build a small cabin on our North Carolina lot with you and Brooke!!!
I absolutely love this!! Such beautiful work and hard to believe our ancestors did this without all of the power tools we have today.
Thanks. And, get well
Dave, this was such an entertaining and instructional video. I don’t really have a lot of construction knowledge and this helped me to understand why things are put together the way they are. What an amazing thing you’ve made. Thank you for posting this.

If someone was wanting to look for some good land in the UP, where would you recommend?
@@fidentia10 I'm not in real estate. The eastern UP is swampy and old glacial wash terrain while the western half is hilly and remote. Price of land goes down when you cross the Bridge. Draw a 40-mile circle around Munising and start there.
I'm also from Michigan but I've never been up north, how is it up there?
@@devontesavage2738 Like stepping back in time, always has been. Only in the UP there seems to be more 5G than you might expect.
You two have inspired me to buy land and build a cabin too. I love what you do together. Thanks for the great and helpful videos Dave.
I love the videos you & Brooke put out! Very informative, but also showing you can create/produce projects in a way the rest of us could replicate if we so wished! Thank you both & stay safe & blessed!

Something we can't (easily) do here in the Netherlands (EU), but I've enjoyed this building process. It's inspiring. Thank you for your effort, not only building the cabin, but also making and uploading the video.
What can’t you do easily? Would this need a permit? Some areas of the U.S. and Canada don’t require permits, I know Alaska doesn’t.
I'm so glad that people aren’t allowed to just intrude, build shit in the woods and disturb nature in Europe.

Hell I have a 35 acre farm in Kentucky for less then a 3 bedroom apt would cost. I'm still 15 mins to anything important. People look at life wrong and think we all need to live on top of each other. Idk what I'd do if I had neighbors watching me piss off my back porch 😅
