Thats the worry of using the microwave for anything, its super easy to burn chocolate or boil milk etc when using the microwave when its on for longer intervals (in fact I think he did make the butter boil over) pricking the egg yolk and using the microwave at 30 second intervals was probably the best way to go about that. Even when cooking store bought ready meals in the microwave or warming up tinned soup you're supposed to cover it to avoid splatter and take it out partway through to stir it. Theres actually a little ceramic pan/pot thing specifically made to cook eggs in the microwave, think its called stonewave or something like that?

I've actually had to do this! Just the before the pandemic I inherited a house that needed major renovations, the plan was to do that, move in and sell my old house. The clearance work on the house started mid-march 2020 but the lockdowns blew my plans (and finances) out of the water and had to sell the existing house to finance the works at the other - I went 9 months without a working kitchen, living on what was effectively a building site. It was pretty grim, getting up and walking down to where the kitchen would be and just heating up things in the microwave and slopping them on toast etc. My saviour was around 3 months in when I just got sick to death of it and bought an electric grill oven (Ninja) - suddenly I was able to actually cook meats and vegetables again!

Eggs can explode both when you're microwaving them, and after when you take them out. There's been a number of terrible accidents throughout the years regarding people microwaving eggs and getting severe burn wounds. So just something like "Please be careful when microwaving eggs - They can explode and cause injury if you're not careful!" would be very nice to see. Alright, cheers!

Guys, please please please remember that there is never a guarantee that an egg will NOT explode in a microwave, even if you de-shell it and prick the yolk. The exact mechanism isn't known, so we don't actually know why sometimes yolks explode and sometimes don't. Please be SUPER CAREFUL because you can get serious burns. It might not be worth it to insist on cooking eggs in a microwave if you have literally any other option.

    • @katyaallnutt693

    • @violetskies14

Jamie did cover them in cling film though so it should be OK even if it does explode. Most liquids *can* explode in the microwave, so it's best to be safe and keep them covered but if you do it should be OK.

Uh... Guys? There's several news articles about people messing up on poaching eggs in the microwave and suffering extended-hospital-stay, mutilated-face burns. Even if you pierce the yolk, it can explode. How to Cook That did one of her hack safety videos on it and exploded a few dozen eggs to demonstrate. Her cup of boiling water with pierced egg exploded after 55 seconds.
I cooked many a microwave egg in my uni days (and scraped most of them onto my plate from the microwave's innards) but I had also been raised by someone who passed on the 80s microwave safety lesson 'leave all microwaved foods in there for at least one minute after it beeps'. My little 700 W microwave-that-could managed eggs in about 45 seconds. About, because it was cheap and didn't have the safety feature of a digital display to tell me how long it had been in.
And there is no 'standard' microwave wattage. Most range from 600-1200W and heat more efficiently depending on how they're built. I can cook a microwave cake in my 900 W oven in the same time as my mom can in her 1200 W one, both using full power. Neither have a rotating glass tray. Both cook that cake recipe way more evenly than the 650 W rotating microwave I had between my uni microwave and my current one.
