  • Explorer & expedition yacht fans, I think that you are going to love this SuperYacht
If like me, you love the ruggedness of commercial ships, coupled with the chic of luxury yachts, then Enigma XK will undoubtedly resonate with your love of this genre of yacht.
This 234 foot, or 71.4-metre ocean-going explorer, was built in 1987 by Richards Shipbuilder.
She was originally commissioned as a Patrol vessel before being converted into a yacht by Atlantic Refit Centre In 2013. she now sails the seven seas as a luxury go-anywhere explorer yacht.

What a beautiful vessel. I worked in our Navy's ship yard as a shipwright, so yes, I have an appreciation for large vessels.

Beautiful rugged vessel! 19 crew, 12 guests? Who in the heck can afford to cruise on that yacht? Who has the money to operate and maintain that yacht, when you only can accommodate 12 guests? I would just wild ass guess, that this yacht needs to pull in at least $5M a year just to break even. The finances of the yachting world is a mystery to me. I do enjoy your videos! Keep them coming!

She is a beautiful ship !"
Well done in every way .
It was a smart ideal to take a old ship , and rebuild her . . She will last a much longer time , then the new one's will . Because of het history and because of the way she was rebuilt !!"

@@YachtBuoy It is sad to see it lieing idle. Not sure what is going on with it but I can only think the hard initial Covid lockdown in South Africa where even vessels especially of the leisure type were not allowed to leave or enter ports had a negative impact on the yacht. It was in Cape Town just before covid came. The mooring fees would have hit the owners as well

I took a look in Google Earth. Using the time slider, here are some interesting images:
      4/4/2015 - Ship docked here: -33.903739°, 18.422212°
11/7/2015 - Ship not in port.
      3/13/2016 - Ship docked here: -33.903739°, 18.422212°
10/3/2016 - Ship not in port.
      11/21/2016 - Ship docked here: -33.903450°, 18.423252°
1/6/2017 - Ship not in port. (January is summertime in the south.)
      2/8/2017 - Ship docked here: -33.904024°, 18.423883°
      4/12/2017 - Ship docked here: -33.903450°, 18.423252°
6/23/2017 - Ship not in port.
      7/6/2017 - Ship docked here: -33.904024°, 18.423883°
      9/20/2017 - Ship docked here: -33.903450°, 18.423252°
1/12/2018 - Ship not in port.
      2/19/2018 - Ship docked back here: -33.903450°, 18.423252°
3/17/2019 - Ship docked here: -33.903911°, 18.421921° (couple hundred feet away, same mooring basin.)
6/8/2019 - Ship not in port.
      3/27/2020 - Ship docked here: -33.901957°, 18.424593°
      6/18/2021 - Ship moved back to here: -33.903911°, 18.421921°
      8/29/2022 - Ship docked here: -33.902618°, 18.423785°
These are all within two adjacent mooring basins.
I clickety clicked back a couple more years and it appears that 2015 is when she appeared in Cape Town.
Google Earth does not image daily, but it looks like @henryvanveen5365 is right about covid. She did seem to come and go quite a bit until then. But if the rest of the vessel has been well maintained, a week in drydock will take care of the barnacles.
More interesting factoids. I looked at the refitter's website: www.atlanticrefitcenter.com/. Enigma XK is shown in drydock in the background image of their cover page. So they are obviously proud of their work on her.
And looking in Google Earth again, here she is in drydock on 4/14/2014: 46.156548°, -1.218188°
So it looks like she probably went from completion of sea trials to Cape Town as her first home port. Good ship for rough southern seas...

Look from outside -silhouette- is much more beautiful than that from contemporary luxury-yachts! Todays yachts seem to me more like „racing-houseboats“ than like true ships. But this one is looking like a real ship and „she“ looks fast, too.

As awesome as it seems, I'm thinking you'll need a chief engineer with several engineering departments reporting to them. You might need multiple electricians in that department, someone to work on tenders and toys, propulsion/power systems, all of the auxiliary equipment like refrigeration, galley equipment, plus marine electronics like radar, satcom, etc. People to feed those people, plus any stewards you'd want. Yeah that's a full complement and over half have technical skills that come at a much higher price than servers and housekeepers. I'll bet that's an expensive boat to operate!

When I was on the Hirta, we had a Chief, Second and Third (me) Engineer and a motorman and we weren't exactly overworked. I imagine this ship, even though she was of the previous generation of SFPA ships, the crewing would be at a similar level.

One of her sisters has been for sale recently, asking about €1m. Post decommissioning from Fisheries Scotland (they were never Navy…….) was used as a seismic survey vessel.
I actually really dislike the fit-out that was done on EnigmaXK. Sure, it’s set up for the charter market, but if you wanted to take her out for months on end this would drive me mad… the new owner really really wanted to save as much of her original lines (even while installing a commercial grade heli deck) and that knocked out a lot of potential.
Also, while I’m not a naval architect, I’m astounded that conversions of such great vessels always go for stock standard class rating, and don’t up class to PYC to allow more pax.
My dream conversion would be something more along the lines of CloudBreak. Even with the inherent volume limitation imposed by the below deck headroom, a new superstructure properly balanced could still pay tribute to her existing lines…

I worked on her up for sale sister, Vigilant, for a couple of years doing marine surveys. I must say that despite her age she always felt solid and dependable. Would have been nice to see her converted.
She has since been sold to ‘Captain Paul Watson’ of Sea Shepherd and renamed John Paul Dejoria…

Another beautiful, rugged boat/ship, but in my opinion the living quarters look a bit sterile and uninviting.

I believe John Wayne, the actor, converted a US WW2 era destroyer to a yacht...

Awsome, but I'd have to work for a decade just to fuel her up:)

I probably am showing my working class roots, but any guess how much this thing
cost? Tens of millions or hundreds of millions?

I would hazard a guess and say somewhere between $15 -20 million USD. Thanks for watching and for the question 🙌

I don't know if I 'd be wrong, but I would feel safer in this than in any plastic boat even if this one is slower and less luxurious

She actually has quite an impressive top speed for a full displacement steel hulled vessel.

Lol - I’m not sure. I hate the sound of my own voice but I love the sound of Sir Jony’s voice, so I will take that as a compliment lol
