There have been moments in my life in which I could not even listen to this song, it was too much for me. Heartbraking as always.
Carlos Mario del Río Chamorro 2 tru brother
I hope your scars have healed up, brother. All in a dose of time.
Regrettably, that is when I force myself to listen to it.
Above and below ... this is a ring that always makes me feel the other way
Still happens to me off and on
Still incredible after all these years. Greg is a genius for writing this song and Marcy took it to a whole new level. What a song!
1000%
hands down, best song by The Afghan Whigs.
Totally agree buddy
The fact that as good as this song is with Dulli on vocals, he was able to set his ego aside & recognize it would be even better with Mays on vocals makes the claim Dulli is a genius undeniable.
So so so so so so so special to have seen this. Front row baby.
Crying my eyes out.
I met Dulli once at an after-show party in Dublin during the late 90s. I drunkenly confessed how much this song meant to me when I was in my late teens. "I want that song played at my funeral" I enthusiastically proclaimed, before he nervously excused himself by saying he had to go to the bar....
I saw her come out on stage at a Whigs show in Columbus in 1994. She is absolutely spellbinding. This is a perfect song. From a perfect album. Congrats to Greg and crew for keeping this tradition alive.
sometimes a song just hits you. This one has since it came out in 1993 on Gentlemen. She is is a dream. Marcy we love you
The most underappreciated part of this video is the fact that Dulli's strap is a seat belt from a General Motors car.
I caught him at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit in 2011… I saw him in Chicago numerous times.
Anyone watching this... go online and buy the final album "Nature Film" from Marcy's band Scrawl. They put out a lot of fantastic stuff but that album is really the one to have. It's a must have in a "holy shit I slept on this?!?" way.
Glorious & fucking stunning. This shit puts modern music to shame. The Whigs always will be a level above .
Scrawl is so good as well
Still heartbreaking. Still relevant. Speaks with words we've all tried to express. Thanks again & again!
I love live music...The whigs never disappoint. Marcy is a sorceress on this live track.
Guys, Afghans and Greg changed my life forever:) whenever they play in London I am always there...
*Marcy sings once again with Mr. Dulli & the gents* . . . new song on album
HOW DO YOU BURN - The Afghan Whigs ( Domino and Jimmy ) Sept 2022
this always makes me cry
Even out of its shocking place in the album, a masterpiece of emotion. Thanks to all, especially MM.
Goosebumps every time
Couldn't agree more, been my favourite ever song since I first heard it in the early nineties. First time I've heard a live version and they don't disappoint.
ghostly606 I saw them do this in 98 on the 1965 tour. Marcy's version is full of hurt and remorse. The backup singer who did it in 98 sang it much more soulfully and seductively. Amazing how a singer's approach can change the meaning of the song! I see them next Thursday and hope they play it again :)
ghostly606 You should check out the live Reading festival version, heart wrenching. In a good way!...
nice! thanks
George Armour I was at the Reading Festival that year and that performance was easily the best performance of the weekend.
Freaking chills
aw ... i still cry everytime
i just break down every time i hear
Me too
Wow at 4minutes. She just crushed it.
Well... that was freaking epic.
"I'm scared," she says. "It's okay," he answers. So cute!
God DAMN. Take my soul. Flay it until it bleeds. And I'll beg for more.
She was there at the Vic Theater in Chicago on 4/12/18. It was magic. Let history be recorded, magic.
I believe you. Ladies n gentlemen... Ms. Marcy Mays.
yup...best song ever
She kills it
The greatest moment of one of the greatest days of music I've ever enjoyed. Going on 10 years later and I still can't believe my good fortune at having experienced this in person
a fantastic mix of sinister and pain served up like only the Whigs can. The grossest display of underrated that music has to offer, the Afghan Whigs not only titillate lyrically, but their melodies are astounding. I have to listen to most song twice just to filter the depth. shame on the music industry for not making this band a household name.
Damn boy, you write for a rock music magazine??
@@conjured_up_skeletons6178 A household name? haha
And then again with Ani Defanco with twilight singers... that was pure joy
The fact that they’re NOT a “household name” is likely the reason they’re still around almost 40 years later…and STILL killin it.
she and Greg changed my life. she is perfect
I have full body chills. God damn. Fuck. Every single time.
Great song all these years later.
he had her sing it because he couldn't. I love Greg. Her band Scrawl is great too.
Amazing..... best band ever
Still brilliant after all these years
All times favorite
Just as epic a performance as the '94 at Reading one. Lucky people who were there to see this mighty reunion!
marcy fucking nailing it.
Lyrics:
You hurt me baby
I flinch so when you do
Your kisses scourge me
Hyssop in your perfume
Oh, I do not fear you
And "slave" I only use
As a word to describe
The special way I feel for you
You look like me
And I look like no one else
We need no other
As long as we have ourselves
But I won't cry about it
Every time you get obsessed
Every time I came undressed
All ugly thoughts are gone
I'm sure we'll all be friends
I'll try to break your back
You'll try to make amends
Curse softly to me baby
And smother me in your love
Temptation comes not from hell but from above
And there's blood on my teeth
When I bite my tongue to speak
Zip me down, kiss me there
I can smile now
You won't find out ever
Hurt me baby
I flinch so when you do
Your kisses scourge me
Hyssop in your perfume
Oh I do not fear you
And "slave" I only use as a word to describe
The way I feel when I'm with you
If I have to lie about it every time I came undressed
I love this song since 2006 when I was a kid digging bands I found on internet. Greg and this girl have an unique voice style, look how their interaction is subtle and deep, they form a very cool couple. Never knew about how she looked untill this video, she's amazingly hot!
The Whigs's diamond in the rough. This song is definitely one of my top three favs from the AWs
I literally got goosebumps at 4:03
Absolutely killed it. Fantastic.
I have got chills..... wow
Brings me to tears everytime.
