Singapore to acquire eight more F-35B fighter jets, growing fleet to 12

  • Singapore will acquire eight more F-35B fighter jets, four years after acquiring the first four. The defence ministry said it's the variant most suitable to the needs of the Air Force. With these F-35Bs, Singapore joins an exclusive club of 17 others, who also have these jets and are privy to their technology. The F-35B only needs a short distance to take off and can land vertically without the need for a runway. It also packs plenty of firepower -- 6,800kg worth of missiles and bombs. It can travel as far as 830km when loaded to the brim, and twice that distance without the weapons.

When an nation's airforce buys into the F-35 program, they no longer fight alone. Each F-35 can feed off of a global network of its comrades, even those flying on the other side of the world. Each additional F-35 in the air, no matter the nation flying it, augments the sensor capabilities of the other, creating a land/sea/air/orbital battle space map where no enemy can hide. It allows allies to fight together even if they aren't directly involved in the conflict. It's an entirely new concept of warfighting, and Singapore should be applauded for making the investment to join the JSF program.

Singapore joined the XF35 JSF(Joint Strike Fighter) Program on it's inception years ago, which also includes NATO member Turkey. However as a junior partner, the country's flag was absent from the experimental testing aircrafts. Due to it's stealth capabilities, the F35 can be used as a strike partner to the F15 (which is an ammunition laden flying truck). The F35 can creep nearer to the enemy line, pinpoint a target, and leave the F15 to fire the missiles. Both have BVR (Beyond Visible Range) capabilities, hence each can see what the other sees. Turkey, however, was not offered the F35 due to political reasons, rather than the excuse that the Turks have bought the Russian S300 air defense system.

Hilarious to see trolls here saying Singapore should have bought sukhoi planes from Russia when Russia right now cannot even make their own low tech drones due to sanctions preventing them from buying any computer chips and their domestic manufacturing capacity is completely unable to provide for their own military let alone provide after sale support if Singapore buys from them. Also, US military R&D spending outstrips Russia's by dozens of times in every single category making Russia lag behind by decades or entire generations for each prototype. If you buy from Russia instead of America, even if Russian planes are cheaper for now it means America is going to be upset and less likely to share tech from their many other areas and that would be a huge downside for Singapore. Guys please use some brain before you suggest buying from Russia. It is almost like some of you don't even know the basics of geopolitics and defense industry.
