I built a Jeep with a sbc in it with a big camshaft, so it would not produce good vacuum at idle. I am also handicapped, so I do all my gas and brake with my hand so I needed good power brakes. I tapped into the brake booster and ran a hose to a vacuum gauge inside the Jeep. This is when I was going down a hill, I knew exactly how much vacuum I had in the brakes, so I knew I could stop good or not stop If I was getting ready to go down hill. This is all off-road stuff btw when I go to go down hill, I look at that gauge. If it had low vacuum, I burp the throttle a couple of times and then I'd have over 20, so then I had great stopping power
I bought a zj cheep with a cracked charcoal canister Once every few weeks youd go to take off usually in front of a dump truck and it would fall on its face no power (not stall) but no power for 2-3 secondd that seemed like forever then bam would take off and run great. The evap system would open up to clean can and cause big vacuum leak then valve would close took me a while to figure that one i bypassed it. But its good for keepin you ac from going to defrost when you punch the throttle
Recently purchased a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 automatic riddled with issues that showed up after 3 months of driving it. Everything seems to be factory 250,000 plus miles I would like to see you work more on some zj's haha
I like to put the smaller round ball like vacuum thingy in the older cherokees it fits better and works good for me. I put it under the hood usually, I have it on the firewall in one of our Cherokees kinda by where the charcoal canister would be.
I put a winch bumper on my jeep and pulled that canister out of the bumper then the next day realized it would only blow out of the defrost, all I did was cap it off and now it blows to whatever I set it to
Can you go over adjusting castor for a lifted weekend warrior; seen that their is a conversion for diff cover degree angle to actual castor. Mine is 6,1/4 inch lift and want the best handling without vibrations. Bought a degree finder that's magnetic. Will do cut and turn if absolutely necessary
At 15:25 is that lifter noise I was told it’s normal on some Xjs im looking to buy one that makes that same noise , what’s the fix it could be a video. I suppose a new set of lifters
Dex what’s your thoughts on running Rotella engine oil in a jeep maybe you could even do a video on what’s the best oil for a jeep or does it even matter what’s your thoughts
Does the PCM gotta be program in order to have cruise control on the Xjs? I stalled cruise control in my XJ using junk yard part but haven't had any luck 🤦♂️sucks!
This must be why my cruise wont work right. Comes on and engages but it will hold mph, then climb a little, hold, fall back down and back and forth. Also crank sensor is bad but your water trick has been getting me around for a couple weeks.
Hey so I have a 2001 xj replaced a cracked 0331 head to a new 0331 head, ran for about 8 months and still starts if you give it gas but now dies and won't hold idle, replaced all sensors checked and cleaned grounds, replaced computer, checked and replaced coil pack and injectors and spark plugs, has vacuum..what else can cause a bad rough idle in a 2001 xj *the idle jumps from 0rpm to 600rpm then shuts off if not giving it gas* - my 1998 is running strong atm though lol😅
Hey long time viewer and you have helped me before my 1991 xj had chargeing problem so i wired in a voltage regulator (you havnt made video on this yet) charges great 14.2 volts all the time but the pcm is sad that i divorced it from the charging system its called its lawyer and decided it owns the check engine and will display it in anger that its not need anymore is there a way to make the check engine light go away threw a riesistor or diode or something to make it believe its still working the alternator
Dicks, when you're gonna do the best valve cover gasket serious?I've been struggling with this kind of a little bit living about cover. But it seems like the silicone valve cover gas gets would be better
I'm going to try this again. When will you do a valve cover gasket series on which valve cover gasket is better? I have been struggling with an aluminum valve covered and it leaks off of the back. Only with a silicone valve cover gasket be better. For a later model cover
Ok so check this out. My ac controls will work fine until I go up a hill and give it throttle. Now I understand what is happening but once I come to a lower idle it should return. ( I'm guessing my reservoir has a leak) But it doesn't. I have to cut the jeep off and cut it back on and then it will work. What the heck is that?? A electric solenoid I'm not aware of?
Everytime dex uploads it gets a like before I even watch 😂
Every time!!!
My wife is on point 😆
The bottle is a resiveore
Yep! me too❤
Very useful video for those that don’t understand the system on the xjs. I know a lot of people that complain about the hvac.
I’ve never understood the vacuum system. This video has made things start clicking in my brain! Great channel dude
Great video and basic description of the vacuum system.
Glad it was helpful!
Another excellent video! I have learned a lot from Dex in just a few months. I've owned cherokees for 24 years
Great to hear!
This video really just helped my situation with my 95 ZJ
Keep the good videos coming! Thank you
Now I know why the windshield wipers would slow down on my mom's 1950 Ford school bus camper & my 1966 Ford Bronco when we went up a hill! ❤❤❤
I knew but I didn’t know if that makes sense 😂. Keep em comin professor Dex
21.46 😂🤣😂. Keep it your secret 🤣🤣
Dude, absolute gold 😂😂 Carolina Boys are going to learn something new 🫸 🫳 🫸 🫳
Dude you just fixed my problem!!!!!! That explains why my ac only work on defrost thank you 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I have the same issue wat did u do to urs to work
just relocated my vacuum ball to a safer location. thanks dex!
I just got an XJ project. Funny this pops up un my feed.
My T4R has vacuum assist for power steering.
I'd call that switch RACE MODE 😂

... Put a vacuum pump on it or go hydra boost 💀
Well that explains why my manual cruise control never worked on my xj
Vacuum is typically measured in inches of mercury, the abbreviation is inHg. An absolute vacuum is 29.92 inHg.
Such a solid explanation!
It's a vacuum reservoir in case of engine dying you'll still have assistance for the brake booster
Here becuase I saw you in a WAEMID IV Video.
A good teacher. Thanks.
Hey I need that cruise control to put on my wrangler
Big love from edgemere Maryland Baltimore county
I bought a zj cheep with a cracked charcoal canister

Great info Dex! Thanks! What about installing a separate vacuum pump for the brake booster?
i swear i took that “canister” off my old 98 xj and my cruise control still worked.

Great video. I will replace the vacuum box on this 88 renix, why not
I learned something! Thanks
Glad to hear it!
I put a winch bumper on my jeep and pulled that canister out of the bumper then the next day realized it would only blow out of the defrost, all I did was cap it off and now it blows to whatever I set it to

Now I'm thinking about adding one of those reservoirs to my buggy for a little braking insurance...
Never had an issue removing mine, just slowed it down, never stuck on defrost. I just blocked line.
At 15:25 is that lifter noise I was told it’s normal on some Xjs im looking to buy one that makes that same noise , what’s the fix it
could be a video. I suppose a new set of lifters
Is that fan mounted to the hood a pusher or puller? I noticed the hood doesn't have vents cut into it.
Its called a vacuum reservoir
Always wondered what that thing did.
Can you do this on a 4.7 wj? My ac used to work but like you said it would go to defrost when pulling hills but now it’s stays on defrost.
I don’t think it needs programmed. Change the clock spring?
use that switch when racing up the hills and you won't have to mash the gas just hold on
This must be why my cruise wont work right. Comes on and engages but it will hold mph, then climb a little, hold, fall back down and back and forth. Also crank sensor is bad but your water trick has been getting me around for a couple weeks.

also have a 1999 grand cherokee need drivers door panel electric windows i call it charcole gray or dark gray
I don’t remember what i did with the canister on my 97 xj. It might have stayed or gone the way of all the earth and just got tied together.
Where is the best place to relocate it
Can you do one on door locks 1998
there is a company on ebay that has them in aluminum they work great i have several
what did the large vacuum canister in your right hand come from would like to have a couple of them
Maybe like 96 and older XJs
you know whats even weirder is they ditched the vacuum pod in the early tj years the hvac is all lever based
Both of my 02 TJs have the vacuum pod under the battery tray like the zjs
@@drewnorthway2522 97 to 01 tjs only use vacuum for the brake booster

It's a battery for negative energy.
Hey dex have an issue I’m stumped on was hoping there was a way to shoot an email with it may even make a great video
So now you kind of teased us about a winch bumper install. So where the video for that? Do you buy or build your own?
I built that one when I was 16 years old!!
@dexjs you seem to have more skill when you were 16 than most of the so called fabricators today making big money.
Did anybody else twitch like a crackhead when he swatted that mosquito 🦟😂.
By any chance you have a hvac box laying around my ex wife busted mine 92
The one in the video lol
@dexjs how much for it?
Hi Do you interested in adding some LED upgrade or a switch panel to your truck? We hope to do some sponsorship with you!
XJ legend 👍🏻🇦🇺✌️. Info .
The negative side of the gauge reads in inches of mercury (inHg), not PSI. Imperial measurements are ridiculous like that
🤘
How do I get rid of the Death Wobble?
Lol, new front end components
While installing a winch bumper I found mine in pieces. Ended up just capping the line.
Oh ok 🤯
Do you sell parts
👍
