Any car will pass 200k inspection if you take care of it and on a Sunday, every Sunday, do all the things it tells you to do in the owners manual. Keep an eye on tires before every journey, change fluids regularly, re apply wax coating every 6 months and have the car underbody sprayed and sealed against corrosion every 12 months etc etc.... Most things in this world last a very long time if you take care of them. If you just jump in your car every day without any more thought then turning the key, then your car won't last 5 years without running into some kind of trouble. As a prime example, theres an old man round the corner from me with a mint condition, totally stock turn-key MK1 Ford Escort he's had since new. Looks as good as it did the day it rolled out the factory. No over revving the engine, no burnouts, no handbrake turns... Just his transport from A to B. Every weekend you'll find the guy washing it and waxing it. Its only because we younger folk have got used to living in a one-use disposable society that shit don't last. Sure, we blame the manufacturers, but the real reason? We just don't take care of our shit no more.

Consider that most mechanics or shops aren't as economical as the "econoboxes" developed by car manufactures. Consider that cars come with expenses such as government mandated auto insurances(could use that money for maintenance), taxes, registration, inspections, and other miscellaneous expenses. A car is an expenditure even with proper care.

Duude It's my car! I have same accord, same color, same trim, same engine, only differences it's pre-facelift and sedan. It's my first and only car I paid 2000 euros and now have it for more than 2 years, it has 250 thousand kilometres and I love every bit of it , I even got it wheels and coils and I took it for a trackday at local full blown pro racetrack I took it to car meets and night cruises, I drive it everyday and often kick the vtec in the sunset in the windy roads, I can't even think about something so crude as you say throw it out get another car, and since you were wondering, yes vtec does kick in in reverse, I have tested that one already

oh yeah i totally agree. just wanted to make sure people could get an idea of how much theyre talking. the average person couldnt keep this car on the road. a good wrench would be able to though easy as he said for another 100,000 miles. i didnt even think it was in that bad of condition. obviously needed work, little TLC and you would have a sweet car on your hands.
In the UK these cars are mostly scrap can be had all day for less than $500 the newer models sell for less than $1500 some as low as $500 so there is no incentive to fix these cars
@@thatguyoverthere531 I would disagree completely. Fully restoring something includes tons of aesthetic stuff that is not required; paint, body work, interior etc. As the car stood it wouldn't have needed, for example, a new steering rack, even if it was indeed on it's way out.

I've got 275,000 miles on my '96 jeep Cherokee xj, it runs fine, only issues have been a starter, and a fuel pump. I don't think I've ever driven a car with less than 200,000 miles on it.
I Am lol I like that. But no lie man these civics are something else, they actually look really good now and make good horsepower considering the weight. It can easily pull on most everyday cars to an extent and can even hang with some of the bigger dogs. It eats cooper S's all day tough lol
This reminds me of my '91 Civic I had, with after 235K miles, and with a broken drivetrain, it was best to walk away from it. I had the car for 21 years, and while the auto trans shifted fine, and the engine didn't burn oil, there were a cumulative amount of other issues that made it financially unfeasible to sink money into the car: The shock absorbers/Macperhson struts were factory originals, the streering was getting loose, radiator needed replacement, it was overdue for a engine tuneup, the brakes were probably in need of replacement parts, the bodywork was banged up in spots . . . and the electricals can become suspect when a vehicle gets that old. While some out there feels that 235K is not much for mileage, take into consideration much of those miles were CITY driving . . . with loads of stop-and-go . . . that really puts a lot of wear on a vehicle . . . as opposed to the steady running of a vehicle on the highways. Facing the reality that the car was near its last legs, I planned for a worse-case scenario for the car, as I carried the vehicle owner's certificate and blank bill-of-sale papers with me on a 1K roadtrip; where the drivetrain broke upon reaching my destination . . . where the car was still driveable, but acceleration was slow due to power to a single drivewheel. The Honda dealership's service department asked if I wanted the repair done, I said, "Nah!" And asked if there was a mechanic that's be interested in the vehicle. A young guy working as a mechanic was interested, I signed-over the vehicle to him, where I walked to a nearby car rental place and rented a Chevy Impala for the rest of my trip. It was a treat to drive a car with the kind of horses it had! Awaiting at home was my secondary vehicle, a Toyota pickup truck, which is now my sole vehicle transportation. A year later I visited the Honda dealership to see what the fate of that '91 Civic was. The mechanic was no longer around, but others knew of the vehicle, where they said that guy sunk thousands of dollars in parts, alone, to get it up to proper, and safe, running order again. So, if I had kept the car and had efforts made to fully put it back into good repair, when factoring in the cost of labor, I could have run up a $10K repair tab on a vehicle I paid $16K for in 1991.
I dont understand the logic of repairing vs buying a new one. If it costs 10k for parts and labour to give another life to an old car it would still be cheaper than 20-30k for a base model of a new car. I guess the other solution is that that 10k would be better spent on a used car no more than 3 to 5 years old with relatively low miles

There were also electrical shorts that created malfunctions with the electrical charging system, the display of the instrumentation, and even getting the vehicle started on hot days. Driving a high-mileage/kilometers vehicle that has reliability issues hanging over it, with the emotional anxiety of wondering what will fail next that could leave me stranded; and the frequent expense of keeping the vehicle running, those were motivating factors why I chose to give up the vehicle. Of course, having a low-mileage/kilometers second vehicle at the ready helped considerably with that decision.

I got 140mph out of one of these 7 years ago as a young female driver lol problem was one day over taking someone lost traction and went into a tree at 80mph thank god these cars are built strong, i managed to walk away without serious injury so i love this car
I had a couple of these. Absolutely brilliant cars. Great to drive, dirt cheap, nippy for an old 2l. What's not to love? I don't think mine ever broke down barring a slave cylinder for the power steering after hooning it around for about a year.
I had a 1995 Honda Accord with 350,000 miles and ran great and looked new. I sold it for $3000 and bought a new 2003 Honda Accord and it lasted to 480,000 miles until it was rear ended in an accident. I miss them. They are greatly built cars.
I take it that this bloke isn't a mot tester then, as during inspection you wouldn't get a bar in and check for play in the bushes. It's only a visual inspection. Yes you may put a bar under the wheel and put pressure on the ball joints to check for play but not the bushes. And the tyre is 100% not a failure. The tyre has to be worn 75% the way across the tyre to be a failure. And what the fuck is he taking about the handbrake not working because of the calipers. How does he know that? It could be cables stretched, inner shoes worn, or just purely need adjusting.

What makes me laugh is here in the U.S. many states have annual inspections but in ultra-liberal California you can have a car literally held together with duct tape and rust and it's drive-able because we have no inspection. Just a bi-annual emissions test which isn't a issue if you know the right people...
rompn4x here in Australia most of our states have annual roadworthy inspections too but luckily for me in my state (Western Australia) we don’t have any inspections at all, and I hope we never get them they’re nothing but a time and money wasting inconvenience

Fun fact, you can build a 1960s car to "mint" mechanical condition for virtually nothing compared to a modern car. They only become expensive if you want to use the fancy aftermarket parts. OEM style replacements are extremely cheap because the parts are incredibly simple by todays standards.

A short story about my dad's accord. Same model , except it isn't a liftback, and has a 1.8l engine. Same mileage. Had a broken gearbox, which got replaced (3 times) Cylinder head was reconditioned once, Some suspension parts were changed on the front passenger side. The wheels are 17' that compensate the ride a bit, but the suspension is pretty good now, after the fix Rear doors don't open from the outside It is a dark blue color, and the clear coat is peeling away on the roof and hood... But it isn't rotting, as we live in a hot country. Also, it has an LPG conversion, because it drinks fuel like a seasoned irishman
I'm gonna say the answer, before watching, is yes. Considering my Integra passed inspection last year at 220,000 miles, albeit it required a tie rod and it was noted that the axles are gonna go bad soon. I'm still using those axles at the time of writing this comment though. Treat it well and it'll last a very, very long time. After watching, the video serves as a great source of info. You get a good idea of what to look out for with old used cars.
Bolverk-GTM mechanics will always say what they can to get you to spend money having things fixed and changed. Nowadays before I get ANYTHING done to my car whatsoever I’ll check it personally if possible and do my research first so I know I’m not being ripped off.
Overall, pretty impressive just wear/ tear things as it's a old car. Hondas are probably the most reliable cars on the planet as they are made very well

Nope, it's in horrible condition compared to all the Hondas in my family. Just sold my old 02 Civic to my cousin and bout the new hatch. 234,000 miles and runs and sounds great and the interior is in great condition.
Are you thick? Look at what is wrong. New sills. Fitting new sills. New brake lines. Fitting. New X. Fitting X. New Y. Etc., and so it goes on, £10,000 sounds almost low to put it into mint condition. From what they said, £1k sounds about right for an MOT.
My 280k mile Honda Accord CE7 euro model passed an inspection and the emissions were perfect :) It doesnt even lose oil except through the valve cover seal :D
€350 - brakes €200-250 - suspension The rust is a problem with these Accords, I'd rather go for a Prelude 4 or 5 - same platform, same costs, less practical but the bodywork is immortal.
couple hundred quid if you did it yourself. there is an oil sump leak and a steering column leak, those two alone would cost a couple hundred each from a garage like this depending on how bad maybe even more. then you have the brakes, which would be a couple hundred alone. suspension and bearings would be a few more hundred and the hole in the drivers side another couple hundred. you're probably looking at spending £2000 at least with a garage like this to get this car up to standard but i wouldnt bother because with all these problems i'd say this honda has been ragged hard at some point in its life. you can find nice well looked after hondas with between 100-200k miles with none of these problems.
If the car is well taken care of then it should no problem. My 08 Impala just passed inspection in June with 205,000 miles on it. Just had to go home and fix my license plate light and that was it. Take care of your vehicle and she'll last you.
@@JanZamani 2003 honda accord v6 6-speed manual. 279,000 now. The original starter just went out last week, 279k and 16.4 years old. I had it rebuilt. I wait for the maintenance minder to tell me when to change the oil, that's between 6,000 and 7,500 miles. I always use Pennzoil platinum synthetic and a cheap Fram filter. I replace the filter ever time I change the oil. It still has the original fuel pump and clutch. I replace the engine last year at about 273,000 because I ruined it not because it went bad. I over revved it on accident, I went to shift into 5th at red line and I went into 3rd on accident. It still ran for another 50,000 miles but it slowly lost power to the point to where it was a hassle to drive. I did take the old motor apart to see if my oil change schedule was good enough and it was. There was nearly no build up anywhere, it was clean inside. Anything specific you wanna know, ask away.

In the US, registering cars depends on the state. That is why each state has a different license plate. Whether on not you need an inspection and when depends on the state. Some states have a serious inspection every year or two or when the car is sold to someone else. Other states have less serious inspections every once in a while. But there are plenty of states where the car can go hundreds of thousands of miles without needing any type of government inspection for either safety or emissions. You can drive the car until it completely turns to rust.

He's wrong about that tyre. Only the central 3/4 of the tread has to be 1.6mm or above in tread depth, the edges could be as bald as Harry Hill and still pass an MoT. As long as the cords aren't showing that is.
I got almost 300.000 miles on my double turbo Volvo. It goes trough inspections w/o any problems and drives well. Nothing has been changed expect for normal wear parts like brake pads and some joints that had became loose over high use.
I had to scrap my 99 plate Accord 3 years ago due to a rotten front drivers side sub frame because of the air conditioning overflow leaking on it through its life. Mine also drank litres of oil only when the V-TEC kicked in but other than that I loved this little car incredibly.

My Old 1991 Honda Accord was a wannabe racecar by the time I sold it a few years ago. I had literally rebuilt it from the ground up. Full exhaust, intake, 100% new suspension with Poly bushings and Coilovers that were fully adjustable. Wheels, extra wide tires and wheels the works. I LOVED that car. Passed all inspections (as I did my mods legally and correctly) It was an absolute blast to drive. But I did AC delete and needed something more family oriented and sold it.........soooo sad Bought a Brand New Honda Fit. Love it as it's a solid good cheap car with AC but damn.... I miss my old Project.
my 1999 chevy van with 234,000 miles on it passed just fine and my 2004 buick park ave with 200,000 miles passed and it still runs strong with its 3.8L v6 and pulls off 30mpg high way.

I now own an Accord, 1.8 vtec. It has 390.000km (242.844 miles) and is in perfect shape. It is possible, but offcourse it all falls or stands with proper maintenance. I allso own a hatchback. This car used to be owned by a Honda mechanic who's taken care of his beloved car., and it really shows.
I own a Bugeye Ford Scorpio 290000miles on the clock. Still runs. Original engine and body has not rotten. Electrics go haywire from time to time but usually a bad wire or moisture in the fusebox.
I'm now realising how chill America is about this. My brother brought his 85 c10 to be inspected last week and all they did was check the lights. And he had a drill bit stuck up the pcv valve to bypass it. I'm glad they didn't do emissions.
I think technically it'd be an advisory but given how badly worn it is it shouldn't be used. (tester may be able to fail it for wear/damage to the shoulder/sidewall at least). If the car still has the condition that caused the wear then it'd be down to metal in under 50 miles.
Yes, of course it can, so long as it's been properly maintained. By which I mean "pay attention to the basics", rather than pampering it like a fancy poodle. My dad's did with no trouble at all, and he bought it secondhand for a pittance at about 160,000, and just kept up the regular oil changes, didn't absolutely rag it all the time, gave it an occasional sponge wash, etc. Then sold it for more than he originally paid.
If your Accord can't pass inspection at 200,000 miles, then you've done something wrong as a car owner.

oh yeah i totally agree. just wanted to make sure people could get an idea of how much theyre talking. the average person couldnt keep this car on the road. a good wrench would be able to though easy as he said for another 100,000 miles. i didnt even think it was in that bad of condition. obviously needed work, little TLC and you would have a sweet car on your hands.
In the UK these cars are mostly scrap can be had all day for less than $500 the newer models sell for less than $1500 some as low as $500 so there is no incentive to fix these cars

Typically to have a car restored you are making it road legal. It's just the way fitting new parts works.
@@thatguyoverthere531 I would disagree completely. Fully restoring something includes tons of aesthetic stuff that is not required; paint, body work, interior etc. As the car stood it wouldn't have needed, for example, a new steering rack, even if it was indeed on it's way out.

I've got 275,000 miles on my '96 jeep Cherokee xj, it runs fine, only issues have been a starter, and a fuel pump. I don't think I've ever driven a car with less than 200,000 miles on it.

This reminds me of my '91 Civic I had, with after 235K miles, and with a broken drivetrain, it was best to walk away from it.
I had the car for 21 years, and while the auto trans shifted fine, and the engine didn't burn oil, there were a cumulative amount of other issues that made it financially unfeasible to sink money into the car: The shock absorbers/Macperhson struts were factory originals, the streering was getting loose, radiator needed replacement, it was overdue for a engine tuneup, the brakes were probably in need of replacement parts, the bodywork was banged up in spots . . . and the electricals can become suspect when a vehicle gets that old.
While some out there feels that 235K is not much for mileage, take into consideration much of those miles were CITY driving . . . with loads of stop-and-go . . . that really puts a lot of wear on a vehicle . . . as opposed to the steady running of a vehicle on the highways.
Facing the reality that the car was near its last legs, I planned for a worse-case scenario for the car, as I carried the vehicle owner's certificate and blank bill-of-sale papers with me on a 1K roadtrip; where the drivetrain broke upon reaching my destination . . . where the car was still driveable, but acceleration was slow due to power to a single drivewheel.
The Honda dealership's service department asked if I wanted the repair done, I said, "Nah!" And asked if there was a mechanic that's be interested in the vehicle. A young guy working as a mechanic was interested, I signed-over the vehicle to him, where I walked to a nearby car rental place and rented a Chevy Impala for the rest of my trip. It was a treat to drive a car with the kind of horses it had!
Awaiting at home was my secondary vehicle, a Toyota pickup truck, which is now my sole vehicle transportation.
A year later I visited the Honda dealership to see what the fate of that '91 Civic was. The mechanic was no longer around, but others knew of the vehicle, where they said that guy sunk thousands of dollars in parts, alone, to get it up to proper, and safe, running order again. So, if I had kept the car and had efforts made to fully put it back into good repair, when factoring in the cost of labor, I could have run up a $10K repair tab on a vehicle I paid $16K for in 1991.
I dont understand the logic of repairing vs buying a new one. If it costs 10k for parts and labour to give another life to an old car it would still be cheaper than 20-30k for a base model of a new car. I guess the other solution is that that 10k would be better spent on a used car no more than 3 to 5 years old with relatively low miles

What I found out about my abandoned vehicle with the new owner, and this was from second-hand sources, was that the automatic transmission was on the verge of breakage and needed replacement. A broken transmission can leave a motorist stranded. The engine's valve-train was worn out; a failed valve-train could have left the motorist stranded. There were also electrical shorts that created malfunctions with the electrical charging system, the display of the instrumentation, and even getting the vehicle started on hot days. Again, such malfunctions could leave the motorist stranded.
Driving a high-mileage/kilometers vehicle that has reliability issues hanging over it, with the emotional anxiety of wondering what will fail next that could leave me stranded; and the frequent expense of keeping the vehicle running, those were motivating factors why I chose to give up the vehicle.
Of course, having a low-mileage/kilometers second vehicle at the ready helped considerably with that decision.

I had a 1995 Honda Accord with 350,000 miles and ran great and looked new. I sold it for $3000 and bought a new 2003 Honda Accord and it lasted to 480,000 miles until it was rear ended in an accident. I miss them. They are greatly built cars.
I take it that this bloke isn't a mot tester then, as during inspection you wouldn't get a bar in and check for play in the bushes. It's only a visual inspection. Yes you may put a bar under the wheel and put pressure on the ball joints to check for play but not the bushes. And the tyre is 100% not a failure. The tyre has to be worn 75% the way across the tyre to be a failure. And what the fuck is he taking about the handbrake not working because of the calipers. How does he know that? It could be cables stretched, inner shoes worn, or just purely need adjusting.

What makes me laugh is here in the U.S. many states have annual inspections but in ultra-liberal California you can have a car literally held together with duct tape and rust and it's drive-able because we have no inspection. Just a bi-annual emissions test which isn't a issue if you know the right people...

Fun fact, you can build a 1960s car to "mint" mechanical condition for virtually nothing compared to a modern car. They only become expensive if you want to use the fancy aftermarket parts. OEM style replacements are extremely cheap because the parts are incredibly simple by todays standards.

I once passed the "Hauptuntersuchung" (basically MOT in Germany) with broken a** indicators which wouldnt even work most of the time at all.
I'm gonna say the answer, before watching, is yes. Considering my Integra passed inspection last year at 220,000 miles, albeit it required a tie rod and it was noted that the axles are gonna go bad soon. I'm still using those axles at the time of writing this comment though. Treat it well and it'll last a very, very long time. After watching, the video serves as a great source of info. You get a good idea of what to look out for with old used cars.
Bolverk-GTM mechanics will always say what they can to get you to spend money having things fixed and changed.

The front end of that Accord looks almost exactly like the front end of my 2000 Acura TL. The headlights and grille are exactly alike.

couple hundred quid if you did it yourself. there is an oil sump leak and a steering column leak, those two alone would cost a couple hundred each from a garage like this depending on how bad maybe even more. then you have the brakes, which would be a couple hundred alone. suspension and bearings would be a few more hundred and the hole in the drivers side another couple hundred. you're probably looking at spending £2000 at least with a garage like this to get this car up to standard but i wouldnt bother because with all these problems i'd say this honda has been ragged hard at some point in its life. you can find nice well looked after hondas with between 100-200k miles with none of these problems.

If the car is well taken care of then it should no problem. My 08 Impala just passed inspection in June with 205,000 miles on it. Just had to go home and fix my license plate light and that was it. Take care of your vehicle and she'll last you.

@@JanZamani 2003 honda accord v6 6-speed manual. 279,000 now. The original starter just went out last week, 279k and 16.4 years old. I had it rebuilt. I wait for the maintenance minder to tell me when to change the oil, that's between 6,000 and 7,500 miles. I always use Pennzoil platinum synthetic and a cheap Fram filter. I replace the filter ever time I change the oil. It still has the original fuel pump and clutch. I replace the engine last year at about 273,000 because I ruined it not because it went bad. I over revved it on accident, I went to shift into 5th at red line and I went into 3rd on accident. It still ran for another 50,000 miles but it slowly lost power to the point to where it was a hassle to drive. I did take the old motor apart to see if my oil change schedule was good enough and it was. There was nearly no build up anywhere, it was clean inside. Anything specific you wanna know, ask away.

In the US, registering cars depends on the state. That is why each state has a different license plate. Whether on not you need an inspection and when depends on the state. Some states have a serious inspection every year or two or when the car is sold to someone else. Other states have less serious inspections every once in a while. But there are plenty of states where the car can go hundreds of thousands of miles without needing any type of government inspection for either safety or emissions. You can drive the car until it completely turns to rust.

He's wrong about that tyre. Only the central 3/4 of the tread has to be 1.6mm or above in tread depth, the edges could be as bald as Harry Hill and still pass an MoT. As long as the cords aren't showing that is.

I got almost 300.000 miles on my double turbo Volvo. It goes trough inspections w/o any problems and drives well. Nothing has been changed expect for normal wear parts like brake pads and some joints that had became loose over high use.
I had to scrap my 99 plate Accord 3 years ago due to a rotten front drivers side sub frame because of the air conditioning overflow leaking on it through its life. Mine also drank litres of oil only when the V-TEC kicked in but other than that I loved this little car incredibly.

My Old 1991 Honda Accord was a wannabe racecar by the time I sold it a few years ago.
I had literally rebuilt it from the ground up. Full exhaust, intake, 100% new suspension with Poly bushings and Coilovers that were fully adjustable. Wheels, extra wide tires and wheels the works. I LOVED that car.
Passed all inspections (as I did my mods legally and correctly)
It was an absolute blast to drive. But I did AC delete and needed something more family oriented and sold it.........soooo sad
Bought a Brand New Honda Fit. Love it as it's a solid good cheap car with AC but damn.... I miss my old Project.

I now own an Accord, 1.8 vtec. It has 390.000km (242.844 miles) and is in perfect shape. It is possible, but offcourse it all falls or stands with proper maintenance. I allso own a hatchback. This car used to be owned by a Honda mechanic who's taken care of his beloved car., and it really shows.
And Alonso's Honda won't finish a damn race !

I own a Bugeye Ford Scorpio 290000miles on the clock. Still runs. Original engine and body has not rotten. Electrics go haywire from time to time but usually a bad wire or moisture in the fusebox.
I'm now realising how chill America is about this. My brother brought his 85 c10 to be inspected last week and all they did was check the lights. And he had a drill bit stuck up the pcv valve to bypass it. I'm glad they didn't do emissions.
Why does Europe get the nicer looking Accord? The US Accord of the same generation doesn't look as nice.

I think technically it'd be an advisory but given how badly worn it is it shouldn't be used. (tester may be able to fail it for wear/damage to the shoulder/sidewall at least). If the car still has the condition that caused the wear then it'd be down to metal in under 50 miles.
Yes, of course it can, so long as it's been properly maintained. By which I mean "pay attention to the basics", rather than pampering it like a fancy poodle. My dad's did with no trouble at all, and he bought it secondhand for a pittance at about 160,000, and just kept up the regular oil changes, didn't absolutely rag it all the time, gave it an occasional sponge wash, etc. Then sold it for more than he originally paid.
My 350k 7th gen just passed a couple months ago. Still runs like a champ.
