As a 50+ Vet rider, I find riding a 450 to be easier for me and safer. I've ridden a 250f and currently own a GasGas450. As an older rider that still wants to clear jumps but who doesn't quite have the corner speed I used to, the 450 is easier to ride. I can cruise through the corner and with a blip of the throttle, still clear most jumps on the track. I have enough experience to know that I can't just hammer the throttle whenever I want and get away with it. I need to be smooth and precise and have good throttle control on the 450.

Same. I just got a '21 Crf450 after not riding for 12 years and I had so many people trying to convince me to go 250/350. So glad i went with my gut feeling. Bike is amazing and super easy to ride. People who say 450s are overpowered either don't have the maturity/experience to control them or just flat out have neve ridden one.

@@Mountain_Yeti A lot of the current top 450 pro riders literally detune their bike because its too much for them. You can watch a lot of interviews of professional riders all saying that a 450 is too much power. It's not about maturity or experience. They are just too much power for what they used for. The only time you really need a 450 is for dunes and open desert riding in some cases.

One of the biggest elements here is where do you ride? Where are you getting to know your bike? Are you taking the time to learn to manage the power where you have space for mistakes and learning or are you trying to acclimate to the bike on a track? i went from an xr 200 to an 03 crf450. Absolutely loved the 450. However, i wasn't trying to learn on a track, had trails behind my house that required throttle control and were tight enough mistakes weren't made at speed, or exiting a corner for a jump.
My brother had a yfz 450 quad, and tried my crf 450 on a micro jump we had, gave it throttle like it was his quad with no torque, and of course crashed. He rode trail bikes before quads, so its not like he was unfamiliar with bikes, he just was not prepared for the torque and power of the 450.
And i never raced. i wasn't trying to compete against anyone when i was on the track, just out having a good time, so its probably worth noting that as well.

Great advice for most people and all beginners. But, if you have grown up riding 250 2t (the 250 4t just doesn’t feel like enough, IF your near 200 or more pounds, IF you don’t exclusively ride the track (Desert, wide open, or climbing hills). I am sure there are other reasons as well. At some point the big manuf will finally all go to 350, which is probably a good compromise.

People take way to much pride in their level of riding skill but in their own heads they k own the fight or flight feeling as well as that smooth comfort of knowing their bike so well that they can pay attention to the motions instead of worry about their actions. I'm 47 and ride predominantly moto. I have less than 5 hours on the 450 and with stock suspension I am already WAY more comfortable than I ever was on my custom 350. It is just SO easy to be smooth and precise. I demolished my right wrist in the past which required 2 surgeries. With limited mobility I find it difficult to turn the throttle all the way to 100% (which was often required of the 350). I have definitely had to perfect the technique of constantly re-gripping and staying fully relaxed in the hands while riding. I love that with the 450 I can just roll it on and the power is there.
At first I was so scared so I rode with the black coupler and had the constant thought "holy crap I'm riding a 450". Once I realized the bike isn't the insane beast it's hyped to be, I went to the green coupler and mentally relaxed. I should add I have tried a lot of other people's 450's and never liked the feel as compared to my KX, but those WERE other people's bikes.
I should also add that I love the longer maintenance intervals since I normally keep my bikes 3-4 years.

450's have their place, you can run them lower in the revs to track better in the rough, reduced rebuild intervals vs 250 due to less RPM/Load. Great in the woods you don't need to shift as much and also awesome in deep sand which was very important at my last Enduro. Can get you out of trouble but can also get you into trouble if your not careful.

Old vet rider here, 57 years old, former local pro, I ride a YZ250 2 stroke since that’s what I rode when I raced. But rode a buddies 4 stroke yz450f a few weeks ago and liked the smooth power (a lot of it) but I tried to lug it also and it just pulled rather than get crazy. After a few laps I turned the same lap times as my 250 and wasn’t pushing hard since I was my buddies bike plus not set up for me. When I raced way back in the day the comment about starts was an issue, since our local races often ran 250/open pro together, and the 500 2strokes always were hard to beat on a fast start straight so ya had your work cut out for you and starting was a disadvantage.

I whole heartedly agree....but also own a 450 and a 250 two stroke. I started riding mx at 16 on a 250 two stroke so I never started properly. I have owned 250fs and they are much more nimble but I really didn't like how I had to rev them out. Smiles per miles 250 2t all day. Ease of riding. 450. But honestly if I was buying a new bike today a 350 would be the way to go.

Here's my problem with this video.
You guys that post these anti-450 videos NEVER mention COST OF MX RACING. Yes, you mention cost of the bike being more, but in all reality spending a little more up front on a 450 saves you a TON in the long haul. A 450 has exponentially more longevity than a 250. The 450 can perform the same tasks as the 250 while being under much less stress and load obviously.
Is it a beginner bike? No. BUT if you're on a BUDGET, a 450 is the CHEAPEST way to race motocross today. Air filters and oil changes and they last a LONG time.

It’s funny you mention this. My first bike was a 2T 1991 KX250 - wayyyyyy too much bike for me. It was undersprung, had terrible brakes, and way too abrupt of power. I sold it and bought a KTM 300 XCW. Even though the KTM makes more power, how it delivers the power, and how you can tune the power to be as smooth as glass is what is most important.
A 450 is a horrible bike not because of the amount of power - but because the power delivery is abrupt; small mistakes amplify into huge problems that a need rider doesn’t know how to deal with.

  • @Juicy5435

People just gotta remember it’s not the bike that controls the throttle, it’s the rider that controls the throttle. There’s a lot of dumb riders out there that don’t appreciate the power a 450 can put out and it scares the hell out of them. Gotta appreciate the power before even getting on that bike, even for a 250. A lot of people thought I was dumb going to a 450 since my last owned bike was a 65. I’m in love with my 450 and have no regrets. I’m also young at 22. I’ve always been a natural at riding no matter what it is, I’ve had friends and family’s with bikes from 150s to 300 2 strokes and been around bikes alot of my life. Didn’t take long for me to get use to the power a 450 puts out. Just gotta be in the right mind to own one. A lot more people get more scared than others and causes them to get sloppy and flustered. I’ve torn my rotator cuff on my 450 crashing due to a poorly built track with a really bad kicker on the jump with really loose dirt on the landing, but didn’t let that stop me or scare me from riding that bike. The whole time I was out of commission the only thing that was on my mind is I wanna get back on that bike again. A 450 is a really fun bike if you can get past the fear and just commit to riding that power house, appreciate the power. The only thing I can say is if you’ve never rode a bike in your life then yes a 450 is probably not for you but it can really go both ways. If you know someone who has a 450, ask them to try it out to see if it fits your needs before buying one for yourself if you’ve never rode a bike in your life. You either got the balls or you don’t that’s all it really comes down to. I never rode a 450 in my life before buying one. The first time I rode it, I was instantly in love with it.

That being said my YZ450FX was a beast of a machine for desert racing, particularly if the course was rather tight or technical, I find that my KTM 300XC is a better bike in general for trail riding and desert racing at my level as it has tons of power if I want it but usually is a bit easier to hold onto once I get tired - the 450 was scary.
