My table was the closest one next to the stage. There was a dance floor. We danced to his music all night. You could reach out and touch him. He was very down to earth. During the break times, he and his band would go outside at the back of the place and have a cigarette. While dancing in front of him. he would look right at me, make eye contact with me and my girlfriend and smile. He truly enjoyed making people happy.
I think he got the best Stratocaster ever build..... That sound and twang. I'm a guitar collector, hobby luthier and guitarist, and I never heard a Stratocaster sooooo Stratocaster.

I heard this song in 1970 Sweden & learned for the first time in my 13 years about se&iness oozing from a song & singer’s voice. It still holds up afte 50 years. He was handsome, talented & utterly abandoned by the recording machine! Elvis stole the song for his shows but didn’t do it any justice whatsoever & couldn’t recreate the power & se&uality that drove Tony Joe White’s original recoding! RIP to a true musician. So many players like that who go unappreciated by general public. I've seen blues players in Chicago who have this incredibly nuanced playing. Tony is one of those. He was steeped in blues, RnB, RnR,,the whole deal. Wonderful performance by all in this clip

It is located near a very small town called Nicasio in the country side of Marin County, California. My table was so close, I was maybe 15 away from him. He sat on a stool and played his guitar. There was small dance floor right in front of him. During break times he and his band would just walk out the side door for a cigarette and a drink. He was a very down to earth guy.
I got to see him play in Nashville by the Titans football stadium along with Waylon, Travis Tritt and a few more it was great Tony Joe and a drummer that,s it he was great the best l will never forget it the others were great to but just a guitar and drums sounded like a full band r I p T J W the best.

Just happened on this, a great old song, of times that should be remembered. One error should be known though-it ain't "polk salad", but rather "poke salad". If the references are understood, the meaning is obvious. To begin, to call it 'polk salad', makes no sense at all. But-in the lyrics is the phrase, "carry it home in a tow sack." In the times referenced, and to this day actually, in many areas, a sack/bag, is often called ' a poke', i.e. 'just poke it in there. If there is any doubt to this-I am 73, and went out with my Granny to gather 'poke salad' more times than I can remember.
Don't know why, but it chaps my ass when they spell it 'polk'! I contend that it should be spelled they way it's pronounced in the South: 'POKE', named after the wild weed, ALSO pronounced 'poke' ( got some growing in my yard right now, matter a fact) I'm not quite from the South, but spent many years in extreme SW Missouri, about 3 rock throws from Arkansas, so I've heard & speak some of the lingo... also, the 'old-timers' call a sack, especially a burlap sack, a 'poke'... like the old saying, "Never buy a pig in a poke!"...
His guitar style is like no other. He's a guitar genius. He expresses his personality into his guitar in such a way you couldn't possibly duplicate what he's playing.
Polk Salad Annie got plenty of airplay on the radio back in the '60s, but I never actually tasted it until 2006. A girl I was seeing brought some back from Arkansas. Til then, I'd always thought Polk Salad was just a homespun myth. Tasted like spinach, only better.
Had the album[1969's Black and White] that this came out on for years but never realized what a great guitar player he was.He died at 75 years old in 2018 of a heart attack.He wrote this also.
This song makes it sound like it's cool to be poor. But really, growing up poor, with music like this playing on the radio, who needs a television anyway. If you have music in your home, in your heart and in your head, you ain't poor at all.

So many players like that who go unappreciated by general public. I've seen blues players in Chicago who have this incredibly nuanced playing. Tony is one of those. He was steeped in blues, RnB, RnR,,the whole deal. Wonderful performance by all in this clip

@@CORNPOP24 I did not know that he died also. I saw him live about 9 years ago. He played at a Bar and Grill called Nicasio. It is located near a very small town called Nicasio in the country side of Marin County, California. My table was so close, I was maybe 15 away from him. He sat on a stool and played his guitar. There was small dance floor right in front of him. During break times he and his band would just walk out the side door for a cigarette and a drink. He was a very down to earth guy.

I got to see him play in Nashville by the Titans football stadium along with Waylon, Travis Tritt and a few more it was great Tony Joe and a drummer that,s it he was great the best l will never forget it the others were great to but just a guitar and drums sounded like a full band r I p T J W the best.

This guy is the real deal. Of course we love Elvis, but I would rather listen to Tony on this song. Hell he wrote it, and can play the guitar as well. Big contribution to American music,

Just happened on this, a great old song, of times that should be remembered. One error should be known though-it ain't "polk salad", but rather "poke salad". If the references are understood, the meaning is obvious. To begin, to call it 'polk salad', makes no sense at all. But-in the lyrics is the phrase, "carry it home in a tow sack." In the times referenced, and to this day actually, in many areas, a sack/bag, is often called ' a poke', i.e. 'just poke it in there. If there is any doubt to this-I am 73, and went out with my Granny to gather 'poke salad' more times than I can remember.

Don't know why, but it chaps my ass when they spell it 'polk'! I contend that it should be spelled they way it's pronounced in the South:
'POKE', named after the wild weed, ALSO pronounced 'poke' ( got some growing in my yard right now, matter a fact) I'm not quite from the South, but spent many years in extreme SW Missouri, about 3 rock throws from Arkansas, so I've heard & speak some of the lingo... also, the 'old-timers' call a sack, especially a burlap sack, a 'poke'... like the old saying, "Never buy a pig in a poke!"...

Polk Salad Annie got plenty of airplay on the radio back in the '60s, but I never actually tasted it until 2006. A girl I was seeing brought some back from Arkansas. Til then, I'd always thought Polk Salad was just a homespun myth. Tasted like spinach, only better.

Had the album[1969's Black and White] that this came out on for years but never realized what a great guitar player he was.He died at 75 years old in 2018 of a heart attack.He wrote this also.

This song makes it sound like it's cool to be poor. But really, growing up poor, with music like this playing on the radio, who needs a television anyway. If you have music in your home, in your heart and in your head, you ain't poor at all.
Music back then I grew up with I was alone as a child and you definitely had to feel the music from sad songs to fast songs I danced to them songs because I could feel the music and the rhythm of the music you sang along with it if you could.
Tony Joe don't need no rhythm guitar player...he plays lead and rhythm at the same time...
