Agree. Timelessness is the mark of classic music. No junk, no tricks, no machines, no autotune, nothing but pure talent and I could not leave this post without mention of major sex appeal that transcends time.
Polk salad Annie was the only song i had heard until about 3 years ago. I've been listening to him a lot since then. Great job on all your songs. R I p.
Of all his wonderful songs, this is my favorite cause it makes me laugh during this tough time, in my life, and across our nation. 🙂 Thankyou Tony !!! RIP TJW
Always loved this guys swamp-funk style. His songwriting is so involving..the lyrics draw you in and his delivery is so cool. Great guitarist to maintain a simple trio yet sound as full as it needs to be. I get off on it :)
Love you so much. Miss you, l u kind, sweet man. I think the Lord needed you. You are by far the sweetest man I've ever known. When I sing "summertime" I always think of you asking me to "come on up, Nita, and sing. " you and your family are wonderful people.
Tony Joe's son said his daddy never sought fame. He just wanted to be Tony Joe White from Goodwill, Louisiana. He definitely had the talent and those that followed him loved him. He just kept playing his "swamp" music as he called it. He left this world with hundreds of unrecorded songs.
Wow i love youtube i have been discovering new musicians and i found this guy man is he great he could play that guitar sing and entertaian it sad to only get exposed to music from what they allow on mainstream dont get me wrong there good too but when i discoverd youtube it opend a wide door to music too hear a great musician like this gentlemen.Thank you youtube please dont restricted so much that we cant journy threw your services. Thank you...Roland from NM usa
He was a wonderful voice to listen to, love the swamp guitar and blow. He chose not to be over famous because he didn't like big concerts and stadiums, he liked to keep it small and personal. Look through the videos, wherever you see him playing it's always to a downhome crowd. I think playing with Tina Turner's Foreign Affair tour, doing Steamy Windows etc was the biggest. Sadly missed.
TJW was a true blue swamp-boogie Hoodooman. He used music to summon all sorts of creatures that live in the far back reaches of the shadow and the soul.
Awesome I've never heard it once Pedro but I am rocking in the Free World where an awesome song you people out in Winnipeg Rock God bless Jamie US Air Force awesome awesome awesome awesome awesome love it Yahoo
i cant get enough of this super sexy, talented class act!!!!! i must see this video at least once a day,,,,sometimes more....he is/was amazing. when i found out he wrote rainy night in georgia,,,i fell off my chair,,,kinda
I love the guitar work, I can't for the life of me figure out how he gets so much sound and funk out of one guitar. Oh, the bass and drum are also awesome. Tony is just kind of laughing about the weirdness of people in the song. What a trip! Does anyone know if he's tuned to some DADGAD or drop D or where there's a tutorial on how to Play this?
The song is in the key of F sharp. He is using conventional tuning. He uses his thumb to play the root note, and to play the two-note thing in the bass (from the open low E to the F sharp.) His highly controlled strumming accounts for the percussive tightness of his playing. Also, at the end of each verse, he goes from the flat six chord (D major) to the five chord (C sharp, with a flat seven) with the open high E string acting as the augmented ninth. Also, the four chord (B, with a flat seven) uses the open B string. The classic sound of the Fender guitar, the open strings, and the strumming technique are the prime ingredients here. I am not sure how far along you are in your guitar playing, but an important thing to remember is how much of this type of rhythm playing involves judicious "dampening" of the strings, and the alternation between that dampening and actual fretting.
Honestly? WE used to do it on 'E,' and I do think that Tony Joe was listening to "Miss You" (the disco POS the Stones did after r Woodpecker joined) 'E' to 'A' to 'B', and the "and I couldn't help but say" is in 'C.' As I said, that way the way we did it. Tony Joe could play a simple 'E' chord, and it's be different every time. God bless that boy, just shows we got >MUCH< better musicians down South
I will NEVER understand why this genius of guitarist, singer and songwriter was not a MONSTER star during his time with us....

Very good comment
He's what John Fogerty and CCR were trying to be. Trying too hard, in retrospect. TJW's understated smoothness sounds like the real deal.
