Bud Wilkinson who coached OU to 3 NC played QB for Minnesota (1934-1936) and won 3 NC in a row this has to be a record.

Yep and Minnesota fired the great Bernie Beirman and didn't even bother to give Bud Wilkinson an interview according to long time Twin Cities sports writer Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Tribune

I watched this game on TV. Switzer had his team join in with the applause to salute the Minnesota effort.

Amazing that losing Aikman a future #1 NFL pick and Hall of Famer would actually make OU a better team

Holtz had the perfect game plan for this game. Keep it close to the vest, play field position, keep it close, and try to get a couple big plays at the end. It darn near worked!

Aikman switched to UCLA the following year and once Holtz was gone Minnesota had nail bitter in Norman the following year 63-0

Troy Aikman running the Wishbone/Triple-Option is Classic!

It was ridiculous. Aikman was likely the highest recruited qb that year but what's the use of having the greatest throwing qb on a wishbone team. Switzer was thinking of turning his offense into a pro style I formation but nixed that idea. Same as having a wishbone qb on a pro style offense. Makes no sense. He only lasted a few more games and wishbone exstrodenaire Jamael Holloway came in and led the Sooners to a National Championship.

I don’t know if TBS broadcast the game but I know they produced it. It was also available to commercial TV stations in the teams markets. I know this because we didn’t have cable in 1985 but this game aired on KIMT out of Mason City IA which was our CBS station for our TV market

It really was remarkable how Holtz took over literally the worst D1 football following the 83 trainwreck of a season. And to have a chance against this juggernaut? It should be pointed out this was the Gophers 3rd game of the year while this was the Sooners first. That's a big deal which probably aided Mn in terms of keeping it close.

In addition the week before Minnesota played a 1-AA team from Montana that ran the Wishbone. Although not at the speed Oklahoma ran the offense Minnesota had already spent a week preparing for the bone and would have another week of practice against it.

It also wouldn’t surprise me if Holtz used starting QB Ricky Foggie on the scout team so the defense could get a good look at a D-1A option QB.(Minesota ran an option offense under Holtz)

Having Aikman run the option would be like telling Nolan Ryan to throw the knuckleball..
What a waste of talent. Jerome Brown unknowingly made Aikmans career a couple weeks later...

We saw in the 1984 Kansas game that Aikman wasn't wishbone material.
