This was the last SMU television appearance until 1989(of course remembering they had no football in 1987 and 1988) The reason for this is before SMU got the death penalty they were gives severe sanctions in 1985. For 1985 SMU was given a bowl ban(only punishment that year due to sanctions being handed down in August). For 1986 the penalties were a bowl ban, No live TV and NO scholarships(when 30 was the limit). For 1987(before the death penalty) they were gong to be allowed 15 scholarships instead of the 30 allowed. So even without the death penalty SMU was going to be at a significant disadvantage as the had a reduction of 45 scholarships plus the bowl ban and one year of no live TV. And FWIW the NCAA only gave SMU the death penalty for 1987. For 1988 they were going to be limited to seven games(none at home) no TV and 15 scholarships after having none in 1987. Due to pretty much having no roster SMU on their own cancelled the 1988 season.

Ran 4.23 & 4.24 back to back 40s for pro scouts. He also won the Missouri HS state championships in the 100, 200 and 400.

When your quarterback gets over 130 yards rushing, yeah, you're gonna win.

Remember OU ran the wishbone offense back then and it wasn’t unusual for the Quarterback to have over 100 yards rushing based on how the other team played defense

@@paulsonj72 Wishbone QB's usually didn't get 130 yards though - but you make a great point (that WISHBONE QB's were basically "running backs who took the snap").
The read-triple-option scheme arguably PREFERS that the QB get the most yards, so he doesn't have to risk handing the ball off or especially pitching the ball - which is risky.

      @@paulsonj72 Excellent.
And who, like Jamelle, was hopefully very very good at handling the ball and making option decisions. Jamelle was better than backup Eric Mitchell was at that, for one thing.

@@Bigfishfun333 you are right about Jamelle Holieway handling the ball 🏈 so well… Oklahoma did not fumble the ball much with Holieway at QB like they did in the 70s and early 80s

I thought it was unfair that the NCAA gave SMU the death penalty which is really what it was, it just about killed the SMU Mustangs football program and that was way too much because many others schools did the same thing and just got a hand slap.

SMU got what they deserved as the death penalty violations came AFTER they were already on probation (and the death penalty case was the third time in six years they were sanctioned) They knew if they committed violations that there was a good chance they would get the death penalty but they went ahead and did it anyway

Was it Bill Clements former Govenor of Texas who was central in this scandal?
